Reds fire Dusty Baker

Dusty Baker had one year left on his two-year contract, but the Reds have apparently seen enough. The team fired Baker a mere three days after their loss to the Pirates in the wild-card playoff. Baker took the team to the playoffs in three of the last four years, but was unable to move them beyond the first round. Baker's old-school style occasionally resulted in some questionable decisions, but did he deserve to get the boot?

Is the Reds' future bright?

The Cincinnati Reds finished off the regular season with a five-game losing streak, a tailspin that ended with their loss to the Pirates in the NL wild-card game. It's not all bad for the Reds -- Joey Votto and Shin-Soo Choo both had excellent years, and new addition Billy Hamilton wowed fans and catchers alike with 13 steals in as many games. Still, it's beginning to seem like time is running out for the Reds' current core, although manager Dusty Baker will have at least one more year to try for a World Series win.

Pirates & Reds -- who goes farther?

Forget about their first winning record in 20 years; that is so a couple of weeks ago. On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates clinched a playoff berth, meaning they'll get at least one taste of postseason action for the first time since 1992. The Cincinnati Reds didn't have to wait as long -- or at all, really, as they'll be playing extra baseball for the second straight year. How far will these NL Central teams go?

Billy Hamilton steals four bases

Billy Hamilton is the kind of player who seems destined to set records -- he's the fastest player baseball has seen in a long time and has great intelligence on the basepaths. On Wednesday night, Hamilton became the first player to steal four bases in his first major league start, nabbing two of them on pitchouts. Hamilton has only nine plate appearances this season, but his time as a pinch runner has allowed him to steal nine bases already, undoubtedly making Reds fans eager to see what he can do in the postseason.
