Alabama Crimson Tide
Tobacco Road or Iron Bowl?

Alabama's championship makes it three in a row for the state. But is Alabama's football better than North Carolina's basketball, including 11 titles between Duke, North Carolina and NC State?
What is college football's all-time flagship program?
Alabama's second national championship in the past three seasons makes it the program of the moment, and there is plenty of history beyond that in Tuscaloosa. But is Alabama the all-time No. 1? Is Alabama the best in all the land?

After all the talk of a split championship, Alabama was close to unanimous in earning the BCS championship and the top spot in the AP poll with a 21-0 win against LSU.
Great defense or awful offense?

The Tide became the first team to pitch a title shutout, and nearly kept LSU from even crossing midfield. All credit to the defense?
An Alabama defense for the ages?

Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick (No. 21) may be biased, but he felt that the first defense to lead the nation in four key stats since 1986 earned a place as the best of all time.
Does national trump conference?

Alabama is the first national champion that didn't win its conference in more than 70 years. Then again, neither did Duke in men's basketball last season.
A championship game to forget?

If you root for Alabama, love defense or can't get enough field goal attempts, Monday night was for you. What about everyone else?
Were these teams destined to play?

BCS officials are considering revisions to the system, including a plus-one model that would have pitted No. 1 LSU against No. 4 Stanford and No. 2 Alabama against No. 3 Oklahoma State.
Can Alabama make it three out of four?

Whether or not Trent Richardson returns (unlikely), Alabama will have plenty of talent on hand. But are the Tide the early, early favorites for next fall?
Have you picked a side?

It's an all-SEC affair in SEC territory tonight, but has everyone in SN picked a side?

Vote: Can LSU lose and still win?
The LSU-Alabama game promises to be one heck of a barn-burner on Guy Fawkes Day (that's Nov. 5, for all you youngins and non-comic book fans), but controversy has erupted on "First Take" (as it often does) regarding the spread. Although LSU is ranked No. 1 in the country (a ranking SportsNation agrees with), Alabama is favored by five-and-a-half points -- and it's been moving in the Tide's direction. Is LSU being given nearly enough credit?
More: Aside from questions of lines and spreads, which team will win?
- "Not a Bama or LSU fan, but I think it's a no brainer. Bama wins by two touchdowns. The game will be competitive but the outcome will never be in question." -- SN commenter invited112
- "I'm not understanding why people are already giving this to Alabama. After playing each team, I remain more impressed by LSU." -- SN commenter bjfly17
- "Bama wins this one close. Last time Saban had a year to stew over a loss he demolished the other team. I should know it was my team he demolished." -- SN commenter grndmstrGATOR
Have defense, will travel. That seems to be the philosophy for LSU this season, and it has taken the Tigers all the way to the top of the AP poll. Saturday's win at West Virginia marked LSU's third big win away from home, joining a list that includes a neutral-site win against Oregon and a road win at Mississippi State. But are the Tigers the best team now and for the long run? Rank 'Em: Is LSU your No. 1 team?
- "Not surprised that LSU jumped OU. I am surprised that Alabama didn't pass them both. Thought they looked best against a highly ranked opponent. LSU should have killed WV, but they didn't." -- SN commenter Calfirebird1960
- "Can somebody please explain who gave Boise State a vote for the top ranked? They have not beaten anybody good. Schools like LSU and Alabama are much better than UGA is. Them two schools would put a hurting on BSU." -- SN commenter Papabear201174
LSU vs. Oklahoma

Oklahoma beat Missouri a week after a big win at Florida State, but it still dropped to second in the AP poll, losing 25 first-place votes.
LSU vs. Boise State

Boise State received one first-place vote in this week's AP poll and has scored at least 35 points in all three wins so far this season.
LSU vs. Alabama

We don't need to make this one a hypothetical, since the Tigers and Tide will meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 5. Will home field rule?
LSU vs. the field

Only four teams received first-place votes in the AP poll, but what about the other undefeated top-10 teams? Could Oklahoma State's potent offense best LSU's defense?

Mel, what do you think of LaMichael James' NFL draft prospects if he were to decide to leave early this year? Is he a first-round talent in this year's draft? And If he were to come back to Oregon, what does he need to work on to improve his position?
Mel Kiper
He's a third-year sophomore. Second highest rated running back that is draft eligible behind Ingram. Great quickness and power for his size. His main thing right now is staying healthy so he can prove his durability. He has to show he can be more than a situational performer at the next level. He only has eight receptions this year out of the backfield, so that is something to watch. At the pro level he will need to be more of a factor in the passing game. He will also need to factor into the return game which he hasn't done in college. But he is a big-time talent. Full transcript

I saw that Auburn almost overtook Oregon in the BCS. Do you see them taking the Number 1 position back?
Brad Edwards
No, I don't. This was a result of TCU's big win jumping them over Oregon in several computers, thus causing the Ducks to weaken in the computer element. Oregon has a much stronger schedule than TCU the rest of the way and should regain that ground in the computers. The only way Oregon falls from No. 1 in the BCS is if it loses a lot of its first-place votes in the polls. Full transcript

Yes. I think this will be a real gut check for Alabama. The Tide isn't going to win the national championship. They're playing a team with a lot of emotion after the death of Nick Bell. Full transcript

The Gamecocks travel to Gainesville this weekend to try and win their first SEC East title. How do you like their chances after the beat down from Arkansas last weekend?
Beano Cook
Number one, that game meant nothing. I agree that South Carolina should have played a little better. I am rooting for South Carolina and Steve Spurrier, but I think Florida will win. It would be ironic if Florida and Auburn met for the SEC title! Full transcript

Utah seems to be coming in under the radar.. do you give them any chance this weekend? Do they hop Boise with a W?
Pat Forde
Jake: I give Utah a chance, playing at home. But I haven't seen any weaknesses yet in TCU. Frogs have handled all comers with ease. I believe TCU will win -- but if Utah does win I still question whether it would be enough to jump Boise. I don't know. Not a computer expert. Full transcript

What do you expect in the matchup between Patrick Peterson and Julio Jones? If my memory serves, Julio didn't have any catches on Peterson last year. Will scouts be watching this one closely?
Mel Kiper
It was a different mindset of Alabama last year. They were a brutally tough defense to move the ball on. They didn't have to score a lot of points. Their defense last year was talent laden, with some studs who are playing in the NFL right now. Last year, they didn't give up over 24 points in any game last year. They held 10 opponents to 15 points or less last year. They've held six opponents this year to 13 points or less. Nick Saban is a defensive guru. He's probably one of the best defensive strategists at any level. He's tried to reload that defensive side. They have to attack a little more. Jones is coming off that career game. Peterson is a shut down corner as well as a great return man. Alabama will attack a lot more, because their defense isn't what it was from a personnel standpoint. Full transcript

Pat, love the column and your chats...People keep looking at the South Carolina-Florida clash on Nov 13 in the Swamp as the decider. My question to you is, doesn't Arkansas look like Carolina's worst nightmare right now with the way the Gamecocks have defended the pass lately?
Pat Forde
Dave: Thank you. By my read of the situation, South Carolina can lose to Arkansas and still control its own destiny. At 4-3, if the Gamecocks beat Florida they win the East. Full transcript

Do you see Robert Griffin III having a big day passing like Taylor Martinez did against the OSU secondary?
Big 12 blogger David Ubben
I do, but Oklahoma State's going to put big points up, too. I didn't really get why everyone thought K-State and Oklahoma State were going to play a high-scoring game. I think I picked it like 34-17 OSU. This week could get out of hand, though. Make sure that scoreboard has room for triple digits. Full transcript

The toughest job in sports today? Well, Lee Westwood probably makes the short list as the man inheriting golf's No. 1 ranking from Tiger Woods, but we lean toward the task of ESPN.com SEC blogger Chris Low, charged with making sense of SEC Power Rankings.
Perhaps all you really need to know about the SEC is the guy whose team sits atop the standings had his holder deliver a no-look bounce pass (even if that part was unintentional) to his kicker on a fake field goal in the closing minutes of a road game at Florida. But if Alabama, coming off Saturday's loss at South Carolina, ran the table and found itself battling an unbeaten Boise State for a spot opposite Ohio State, Oregon or some other team in the national title game, which resume would you side with?
- "I am amazed when I look at these schedules for teams like Ohio State, Oregon , Bosie State, TCU etc. They are the weakest schedules I have ever seen. Many of these teams have only played one ranked team so far this season (compare this to Alabama who has played four ranked teams and has at least two more ranked teams to play.) The SEC knocks one another off week after week and these other so called top teams play cream puff schedules and cry they don't get any respect. Hell even the unranked SEC teams aren't so bad and can come out and beat ranked teams on any given weekend." -- kbrown2225
- "The season is over for the SEC. It really doesn't matter who wins what now. Alabama had 1 bad game in 2 years... They will not have another this season and that means no SEC team in the BCS title game." -- lynx1208
- "I'll take a 1 loss SEC team over any other undefeated team from another conference. Any of those teams that are in the top 5 right now, would have 1 or 2 losses at the end of the year playing in the SEC." -- Dirty-Diaper
