Vince Young
The Eagles' dream season took another hard left turn into the realm of dystopian night terrors Thursday, as they were embarrassed by the Seahawks in a 31-14 laugher. Philadelphia is 4-8 and at the very bottom of the NFC East, which has led some to believe that Andy Reid's job is in jeopardy. Reid's lengthy tenure with the Eagles has seen a lot of regular-season success contrasted with an equal amount of playoff failure, so will this disaster of a season claim him as a casualty?
- "Why are most writers giving Reid a "past performance success" pass? Players are in a "what have you done for me lately" status.....why not Reid? " -- SN commenter CuelessJoe
- "I have been one, of a very few, die hard iggles fans who has supported Reid, but enough is enough! Like Shanahan in Denver, Gruden in Tampa, Landry in Dallas and Fisher in Tennessee; eventually you lose the locker room and the players simply don't respond to you. " -- SN commenter txtchlax8
Who's to blame?

Andy Reid may take a lot of the heat, but the Eagles as a whole have drastically underperformed this season.
Vick the answer?

Michael Vick wasn't able to continue his 2010 success before his injury this season, leaving Vince Young to attempt to pick up the pieces.
What are the best touchdown plays ever in college football from each yard marker? Our analysts have come up with the most amazing scores from 1 yard to 99 yards, but we're giving you the chance to vote on two of the most controversial selections. From 8 yards out, do you favor Montana-to-Haines in the 1979 Cotton Bowl, or Vince Young's winning scramble in the 2006 BCS title game? From 64 yards out, was Kordell Stewart's 1994 Hail Mary to beat Michigan better than O.J. Simpson's Game of the Century run?
Montana or Young?

Montana's pass capped a big comeback, but Young's run was almost cinematic in its dramatic appropriateness.
Stewart or Simpson?

Stewart beat Michigan in the Big House in devastating fashion, while Simpson's run showcased his future as a star back in the NFL.

It's not exactly an apology, but Vince Young said Monday that he knows he could have handled his frustration with Jeff Fisher better during Sunday's loss against the Redskins. It might be more interesting to hear ideas on how he could have handled it worse. Regardless, we won't be hearing much at all from Young now that he has been placed on season-ending injured reserve. While the Titans figure out how they are going to win games with a third-string Rusty Smith, we'll leave you to debate Young's future and how much he still has to offer.
- "He's been very immature in the way he's handled criticism and adversity. If he truly wished to be a "great QB" as he says ... he MUST learn to ignore all the criticism and learn from the mistakes ... grow from the adversity. All that talent ... and that potential ... being thwarted by his inability to drown out the "noise" and stay focused." -- texas386
- "Unless you follow the Titans and watch every game he plays, you don't see his talent level. He mentally cannot handle his position and his T-Rex arm motions make his 0-10 yard passes very inaccurate. He's got above average arm strength and a pretty good deep ball, but he coughs up the ball and cannot emotionally handle this game. Look at how VY has behaved and compare it to how McNabb handled his benching for Grossman. You can look at VYs stats and look at his W/L record, but that doesn't speak to his contribution to the team." -- AndrewD3000
3. Is Vince Young the right choice at quarterback?
What's up with Vince Young? Every time it seems like he's solidified his hold on the Titans' starting QB job, something happens to undermine confidence in him. Rumors of missed meetings and workouts have dogged Young this week, leading some to believe that Kerry Collins may be a better choice for the Titans at this juncture. He's injured right now, but when he's healthy, should Collins start at QB?
- "If VY is the starter and he was healthy enough to be the No. 2 QB last Sunday, then he was healthy enough to start. Someone is sending VY a message here: lets call it like it was." -- SN commenter 81WASIV
- Rank 'Em: How should the 2006 NFL draft have gone?
Will the New Orleans Saints ever wish they could vacate their 2006 first-round pick?
Giving back the Heisman Trophy he won by dominating college football for USC in the fall of 2005 almost assuredly wounded Reggie Bush's pride, but the leg injury he sustained in a Week 2 win against the 49ers is of slightly greater concern when it comes to his immediate future. Bush has a Super Bowl ring with the Saints and has produced highlights, but as recently as last week, only 20 percent of SportsNation considered him an NFL star.
Of course, take away the ring, and you could say the same of Jay Cutler and Vince Young, two other big names from the 2006 draft (or Matt Leinart, minus the highlights part). With Cutler off to a quick start for the Bears, is he the best bet of the hyped quartet to thrive?
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
What's the most important think you took from the big Bears win?
ESPN Chicago's Jeff Dickerson
That Martz can win games for this team. And Cutler played his best game ever...in my opinion. Full transcript
- Vote: Should Roger Goodell suspend Vince Young?
- Rank 'Em: Is Vince Young one of the NFL's best quarterbacks?
USC is looking at a lean few seasons, at the very least, as a result of Reggie Bush's time with the Trojans. Vince Young is worried about Roger Goodell handing him a suspension after the Titans quarterback was involved in an altercation in a strip club. And Matt Leinart is trying to fend off Derek Anderson for snaps in Arizona.
You want to try and convince us the 2006 Rose Bowl wasn't cursed?
What some called the greatest game ever played still looks like the high point in the careers of three of its biggest stars. Young made a Pro Bowl and played well last season, but this latest incident doesn't help his cause. Bush has a Super Bowl ring and his share of highlights, but he hasn't exactly been Barry Sanders. And Leinart has fewer than half as many career touchdown passes as J.P. Losman.
So while we await Goodell's reaction to Young's incident, what does the future hold for him?
William (Kenner)
Pat, I attended the recent Saints minicamp. I asked one of the Saints coaches (who I won't name), what will happen if Pierre Thomas continues to hold out. He said, certainly we want him back and believe he'll back. But either way, a healthy Bush is going to be the featured back and earn every cent of that $8 million. He also added that they felt Bush improved dramatically last season running the football. Your thoughts on Bush getting 15 carries a game? Could this be why they are playing hardball with Thomas?
NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas
I thought Reggie looked faster than ever at minicamp. Someone close to him told me he's healthier than ever. Sounds like a formula for a big year, but I think Saints will be careful not to overuse him. If Pierre doesn't come back, they'll add another RB to the mix. Full transcript

It seems like just last week we talked about Vince Young as a franchise quarterback. It also seems like just the other day that Young led Texas on a last-minute drive to beat Matt Leinart and USC in the Rose Bowl. But Sunday's comeback top even his Pasadena heroics?
All Young did against the Cardinals was lead the Titans 99 yards in the closing minutes and cap things off with a game-winning touchdown pass to Kenny Britt as time expired.
Back in January of 2006, 57 percent of voters thought the Longhorns were done against the Trojans when they trailed 38-26 with just over six minutes to play. By the time Young was done that night, 57 percent also expected at least multiple Pro Bowl appearances out of his NFL career. But dating back to his first run as a starter in Tennessee, SportsNation has been slow to put Young in the company of NFL greatness -- or even goodness.
Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson stuck up for Young before Sunday's game, although even he might have been surprised by Young's prolific passing day against the Cardinals.
Mike (Boca Raton)
Does it make you chuckle that people are jumping on the Vince Young bandwagon just because they won a few games?
Matt Williamson
No -- I feel like it is deserved ... to a degree. He has played VERY well. Played within himself. Has been much more accurate with the football than I ever thought was in him. Still incredibly dangerous with his feet and it makes playing man coverage against Tenn very tough to pull off. But-they are keeping it all very simple for him and this O will always be limited with him behind center. For example -- and this is a bad example since it worked out for Tennessee -- but on MNF, VY had to a lead a long drive to score late in the game. They got it done on runs from VY and Chris Johnson, but counting on the running game for big plays is hit or miss. Full transcript

Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams cost himself a cool $250,000 by giving the Bills the literal finger a few weeks ago (Bill Cowher was more suavely figurative in doing it when the Bills inquired about his availability). But Adams may have saved himself millions in future signing-bonus money for Sam Bradford by forcing Jeff Fisher to play Vince Young. All of a sudden, the Titans have their quarterback of the future and a playoff run in the present.
Young is now 4-0 as a starter for the Titans and looked downright Texas-like against the Texans, throwing a touchdown, running for 73 yards and successfully handing the ball to Chris Johnson. But how convinced are you that a guy who seemed on the verge of bust status is really the quarterback to lead the Titans into the future?
Travis (Nashville, TN)
With the recent improvement of Vince Young and only one year left on Kerry Collins' contract, how serious do you think the Titans will be at looking at QB's in the 2010 draft?
Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders
Honestly, that depends a lot on how Vince Young plays over the next few weeks. After the trouble he has had, it's hard to see them passing up someone like Sam Bradford if he's there when they are drafting. But Young is played very well so far -- 25 percent better than an average QB, according to Football Outsider's advanced DVOA metric -- and if he keeps playing this well, it makes sense for the Titans to draft a QB in the third or fourth round as a backup and let Young try to take the reigns again. - Flashback: Relive an epic SN chat the day after Young's Rose Bowl win.
There was a time when SportsNation thought pretty highly of Vince Young in an NFL uniform. No, really, it's true, even if we've blacked it out in some kind of collective "Flash Forward" event. On the eve of the 2007 season, more than 36,000 voters ranked Young No. 12 among starting quarterbacks, ahead of Jay Cutler and Eli Manning. Two seasons later, voters ranked Young behind the likes of Jason Campbell and Byron Leftwich among quarterbacks drafted in the first round during the last decade. Amy Winehouse keeps better company than that.
Young's situation has grown so bad that it was left to Titans owner Bud Adams to reportedly pull an Al Davis (minus the leisure suit, we assume) and tell coach Jeff Fisher to play the quarterback ahead of Kerry Collins when the winless team plays the Jaguars. And according to a report in The Tennessean, that's what will happen.
AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky was already dealing with VY drama two weeks ago.
Benjamin (Goodlettsville)
Are the Titans not playing Vince Young more because they are afraid his trade value will go down if he plays? I know they want to go with the player that gives them the best chance to win, but how can the Titans say that Vince is the franchise QB when they don't even think he can give them a chance to win a game?
Paul Kuharsky
Nonsensical. They aren't playing him because they are worried about his trade value, which is zero? He's due $4.75 million after the season and has a $14 million cap number next year. They won't pay those, and no one is trading for them.
Vince Young (Nashville)
Did you forget I have no Cap Number? Also you didnt put any of the blame on Kerry why do i get all the blame when we failed but none of the credit when we win!
Paul Kuharsky
Right now you're getting none of the credit for the losing, aren't you enjoying that? Short memory. When you won, you got lauded so much you won offensive rookie of the year!
Vince Young (Nashville)
I have won alot of games for the Titans is there ever a nice comment you can say about me?
Paul Kuharsky
When I get around to ancient history rather than current events, I will let you know. Full Oct. 15 transcript.
