SportsNation Blog ArchivesSN Blog Archives Shaquille O'Neal

SportsNation simply likes Shaquille O'Neal. Forget the rap albums, the horrible movies, the declining skills and the trading in of superstar sidekicks the way some people trade in movies with Netflix. Forget that he's been front and center in our consciousness long past the usual sell-by date for popularity. We just like him.

The day after Shaq become the fifth player in NBA history to score 28,000 career points, check out how his approval rating compares to some of the game's biggest stars.

But unlike another aging peer with longstanding popularity, Brett Favre, Shaq doesn't appear to be helping his legacy much at this point. He's only the third center to score 28,000 points, but is he one of the best centers of all time?

Rank 'Em: Is Shaquille O'Neal one of your top five centers of all time?

Josh (Cleveland)

J.A. - on a personal level, if you were (God forbid) a Cavs fan, where would you stand on the potential trading of Z? On the one hand, the man has redefined "loyal" (we can only hope LBJ is 1/10 as loyal as Z). On the other hand, doesn't Ferry owe it to the fans to do whatever is necessary to improve the Cavs' chances of winning it all? Even if it means trading a close friend and the most loyal athlete Cleveland will probably ever know?

J.A. Adande
J.A. Adande

More than Bernie Kosar? I'm not a Cleveland guy, so I'm not sure how they'd rank. I'm guessing Kosar. But if you could get Jamison, I'd do it. Shaq has been playing pretty well lately, so I don't think you need Z as the insurance as much anymore. And if you're a long-suffering Cleveland fan, I'm guessing you would trade your own mother if it could get you a championship Full transcript

i know how [Kansas center Cole Aldrich] is falling on draft boards because he isn't getting as many touches, but he is like a more athletic version of Brook Lopez. Come draft night do GMs really take unproven "projects" over a defensive big man who knows how to really play? Aldrich goes #3-5 or I quit even watching nba basketball--its nonsense..

Chad Ford
Chad Ford

I don't know if he's falling, he's stayed pretty steady at No. 7 all year. However, more and more GMs are questioning the "size matters over everything else" mantra that has plagued the league the last 15 years thanks to Hakeem, Ewing, Robinson, Shaq and Yao. More and more teams are going small, playing up tempo and looking for mobile big guys who can get up and down the floor. So players like Aldrich aren't quite as valuable as they used to be. That said, I'd be shocked if he wasn't a Top 10 pick. Full transcript

Shaquille O'Neal thinks LeBron James could be a good player-coach in the NBA right now. We're fairly confident Joakim Noah disagrees. As for Mike Brown, Cleveland's currently employed coach-coach? Our guess is he agrees with James on this -- whatever James believes.

"This is just an opportunity for Shaq to put the spotlight back on him, make him seem unselfish, and hype up his team. Means nothing." -- SN commenter edwin.geinger

Yeah, we don't really have a good comeback for that. The truth hurts. But (there's always a but) since Shaq threw it out there, we at least find ourselves wondering if any player could successfully handle a double role. It wasn't all that long ago, sort of, that Bill Russell led the Celtics to a championship as a player-coach. And SportsNation has already made it clear they think NBA coaches matter less than in any other major sport. So could it happen?

23lebronjames

Maybe the cavs should fire mike brown and hire lebron as player coach. Don't get me wrong I am a huge cavs fan. Its just a thought since all of clevelands championships with the exception of the browns have had a player-coach for the indians in both world series championship years with lou boudreau and tris speaker.

I guess LeBron can keep the basketball IQ. Kobe will keep his rings. lol

LeBron James visits the Knicks Friday night in a game that is perhaps not as important as people who spend too much time in close proximity to the I-95 corridor think it is. Madison Square Garden has some solid history, sure, but as a majority of SportsNation would attest, we're not talking about the Coliseum in Rome (more like Kennedy Arena in Rome, N.Y.).

Nevertheless, with the Cavaliers off to a 3-3 start and looking like a team little better than the versions that came up short in recent seasons, a visit to the Big Apple will rev up the engines of speculation when it comes to LeBron's future plans. NBA.com blogger Sam Smith made a bold prediction this week, suggesting LeBron will end up playing alongside Kobe Bryant with the Lakers. To which we say, it's about time Phil Jackson gets some talent to work with. But could the game's two biggest stars really coexist?

Paul (NYC)

LeBron is not an aging vet signing a 1 yr deal, meaning 2011, 2012, 2013, etc. are just as important as 2010. Therefore we should be talking about not just teams' 2010 rosters/cap space, but also 2011, as well as the power structures (gm/coach) and financial stability of potential franchises LeBron may actually be interested in.

Chad Ford
Chad Ford

Yup. And that's why I believe the Cavs misplayed their hand. They have been consumed with winning short term instead of putting in place a young core that can keep the Cavs in the Eastern Conference Finals for the next decade. I'm still not convinced that LeBron will bolt. But if he does, that will be the reason. Great players want to play with other great players. That's why the Dream Team has been so appealing to veterans. If LeBron can find a great situation (a big if) I think he bolts. At a cursory glance, the Clippers might be the best long term fit ... can you imagine LeBron with Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Blake Griffin and Chris Kaman? Full transcript

We're going to go out on a limb here and say that Shaquille O'Neal has mastered the art of being a celebrity.

Oh, sure, there are people out there more famous than he is. We'd venture to say that he's not even the most famous basketball player out there. He is, however, seemingly unencumbered by the weights of fame that routinely drag other athletes and celebrities down.

Shaq goes through life like a kind of wandering troubadour, concerned only with being interesting. If he's in Washington, he'll show up at the White House as a kind of social experiment. If he's in a car, he'll put on some kind of wig. He'll challenge David Beckham more than once. If you're part of the Twitter-verse, Shaq will hang out with you.

Even Shaq's ex-teammates like him (with a few possible exceptions). Steve Nash recently told the AP that Shaq will be a great fit in Cleveland. Meanwhile, Shaq is a bit busy fake-choking a gigantic man in spandex. Which is really no surprise.

bcohn17

I guess if you can't make a hook shot anymore, might as well try to infiltrate the White House...

Steve Nash probably thinks Shaq is a good fit anywhere just as long it's not next to him in PHX! Good Luck LBJ!

Matter of fact .. with Shaq's power .. Shaq will be able to CLEAR .. the lane out better then any active Center in the NBA right now .. IF .. Lebron wants to drive to the lane more

Kissing What are your thoughts on public displays of affection?
Kate Hudson and Alex Rodriguez went public with their romance this weekend. And there are all those happy couples and proposals in the stands.

Penn State Does being rated the nation's No. 1 party school help or hurt recruiting?
Penn State is at the top of the list this year. Who doesn't want to have fun at college? What's this talk of going to class and practice, anyway?

Michael Vick If you went to jail for two years would your job welcome you back?
Roger Goodell is giving Michael Vick a chance, if any team will sign him. Would the bosses where you work be as accommodating?

Lance Armstrong Is trash talking among athletes good or bad for sports?
Alberto Contador has nothing nice to say about Lance Armstrong. Good thing they'll be racing on different teams next year in the Tour de France.

"SportsNation" TV plans to use every pitcher on the staff today, including All-Star hosts Michelle Beadle and Colin Cowherd.

Share your pitches, swing at the knuckleball ideas, vote on the biggest stories of the day and chat during the show on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. ET.

Brock Lesnar

With the proper training, could Shaq beat Brock Lesnar?
We're not asking whether Shaq would survive 30 seconds, like 26 percent of you said you could do yesterday. Could the big guy actually beat the UFC champ?

President Obama

What do you think about the broadcast of President Obama's first pitch?
It didn't make the pitch look any faster or higher off the ground, but the odd angle did cause some watching the All-Star Game to cry conspiracy.

Nate Robinson

Would you play in Greece if you could make twice as much money?
Knicks guard Nate Robinson reportedly has a two-year offer from Olympiakos, the team that lured Josh Childress to Athens.

SportsNation

Does seeing your team's players having fun with rivals bother you?
Fans demonstrate daily how much they hate rival teams and fans. And then come the All-Star games, during which the guys are buddy-buddy.

Matt Cassel

Is Randy Moss responsible for Matt Cassel's success?
The Chiefs are going to pay their new quarterback more than $60 million over six years, expecting him to be more than a one-season wonder.

Tim Wakefield

And our final question …
An 11-3 record wasn't enough to get the 42-year-old knuckleballer into the game, even though his first All-Star appearance might also be his last. Should he have gotten a chance?

In the immediate aftermath of the team's most recent championship, SportsNation was split as to whether or not the Lakers were favorites to repeat. But when the Cavaliers made their big move, literally, by adding Shaquille O'Neal to the mix, popular support swung in favor of LeBron James' team.

So what impact does Ron Artest have on things? Well, voters still think Artest would fit better alongside LeBron and Shaq, but it's no longer a contest for the top spot.

By a better than 2-to-1 margin, it's the Lakers for two.

And Artest's combustible past aside, voters not only think Dennis Rodman was more of a handful for Phil Jackson; they think a current member of the Lakers is more of a chore.

bos411

Great job hedo you went from playing for an elite team in the east to nearly playing for an up & coming portland squad to playing for a lottery team? The raptors will flirt with .500 at best and hedo can watch the playoffs from his cosmopolitan house enjoying the extra $$$ he has accepted for losing!

-- bos411
blackmatt86

well i think the hedo deal was worth it for toranto yeah they have no shot at winning the whole thing but they are trying to put fans in the seats making the playoffs do that and hedo proved he is a playoff performer against the CAVS but when it comes down to it great pick up by the raptors

Just hours after the celebrated arrival of Shaquille O'Neal to Cleveland (where the big man proclaimed he'd "win a ring for the King"), Ron Artest one-upped the Big Aristotle and announced he would be signing a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

If his word is golden, it means that Artest and Kobe Bryant will be amicably (we think) sharing the same court. What does this mean to SportsNation? Well, before today, you had LeShaq and the Cleveland Cavaliers as your favorite to win the 2010 NBA finals. But perhaps things have changed? Cast your vote below.
