NHL Opening Night Arrives

October 1, 2009

The NHL regular season kicks off tonight, but we have to wait until Jan. 21 to get our first showdown between Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin (in either a brilliant marketing stroke that will build anticipation to untold levels or the worst bit of scheduling this side of the Emmys). By a 71-29 percent margin, SportsNation feels the league would be better served by Ovechkin evening the championship score than by Crosby winning his second title. Regardless, the individual duel will rage on.

SportsNation blogger NYandMU likes Ovechkin and the Capitals to win the Eastern Conference, but the highest individual honors go to someone else entirely.

The Penguins are gonna run the East for a long long time considering the best two players in the world (Crosby and Malkin) are 22 and 23 respectively. Not to mention Staal is the youngest at 21. In the four/five years they have been in the league they have won 2 Prince of Whales trophies, 2 Hart Trophies (even though Malkin has been nominated the last three years but somehow loses to Ovechkin), a Conn Smythe, Rookie of the year X2, X2 Art Ross trophies, and a little thing called the Stanley Cup.

SportsNation Guide: NHL Preview

September 22, 2009

Believe it or not, the start of the NHL regular season is just about a week away. No, seriously, we're not kidding. We know the leaves haven't turned and summer doesn't actually end until today, but what the heck, it's been, what, at least three or four weeks since the Penguins won the Stanley Cup, right?

Then again, maybe that short offseason helps keep the NHL fresh in SportsNation's mind. A year ago, voters correctly predicted the Red Wings to win the Western Conference and made the Penguins their second choice, behind the Red Wings, to win it all.

Blackhawks star Patrick Kane and ESPN.com writer Scott Burnside stopped by chat Monday to help SportsNation get its ice legs before jetting off to Europe (Burnside to Stockholm for the Red Wings and Blues and Kane to Helsinki for the Blackhawks and Panthers).

Jason (Ellicott City, MD)

You are only rated an 86 in NHL. What is up with that?

Patrick Kane
c

I think an 86 is pretty good to be honest with you. I think the highest are Crosby and 94 and Ovechkin at 92. I thought I'd be better than Teows, but I am still on the cover. I got him by that. Full transcript

AJ (Champaign, Ill.)

How do the Blackhawks avoid a lull in their performance after they return from Finland?

Scott Burnside
c

AJ; Good question. The European experiment has been decidedly mixed in terms of how it affects teams. All four coaches who went last year got fired although the Pens did end up winning a Cup. I think the 'Hawks' youth and the nice steady hand of head coach Joel Quenneville will keep them from going off the rails when they get back from Finland. Full transcript

The start of school doesn't mean the collapse of fun, regardless of the high jinks posted by Yohnkers. Football fans are trickling back into the profiles, and people are sharing pictures of their summer games and vacations.

Earlier this week, Tony Kornheiser joked on "PTI" that Sidney Crosby ought to pull up to Alex Ovechkin's house and honk away until his rival came out to admire the Stanley Cup. The only problem is Ovechkin could now answer the door with his arms full of Hart Trophies.

A week after the Penguins stunned the Red Wings in Detroit, NHL luminaries gathered in Las Vegas (Las Vegas?) to hand out the season's other hardware. Winners included Columbus goalie Steve Mason as top rookie, Boston's Zdeno Chara as biggest human on skates (and best defenseman) and fellow Beantown resident Tim Thomas as top goalie.

They also included Ovechkin, who became the first player since Dominik Hasek more than a decade ago to win the Hart Trophy in back-to-back years as the league's MVP. And in SportsNation's eyes, winning the top individual honor twice by the age of 23 is more impressive than captaining the Stanley Cup champions at 21.

Malkin is the best player in the game today when you take everything into consideration (Crosby 2nd, Ovechkin 3rd). Ovechkin is the best offensive player in the NHL and I love how he hits and plays physical, but he can't play a stitch of defense. Crosby is a great player and can play all around, but his defense is just solid at best and his finishing skills need work. Malkin needs work on his finishing as well, but is ahead of Sid in that regard and he has really stepped up his defensive efforts over the past 2 years - especially the past 4 months.

If it were an award for point scoring- there wouldn't be voting. If it were an award for not turning it over- there wouldn't be voting. If it were an award for shooting percentage, shots taken, or assists- there wouldn't be voting. It is a SUBJECTIVE award based on perceived value to a players own team. In theory, a player could win the award without scoring a single goal- so don't throw individual stats out to compare.

The BEST part is Hossa leaving the Pens for Detroit to have a better chance of winning the CUP, not to mention the 70 mil he left on the table.

It's been 25 years since a team that lost in the Finals the year before managed to win the Stanley Cup the next year. That makes it even more impressive that some of you predicted the Penguins would win -- in seven games.

Before the final series began, we asked you who you thought would lift Lord Stanley's Cup. 4everDetroit thought we'd all be wearing ice skates before the Penguins would defeat the Red Wings at home. But some of you brilliantly foresaw a Game 7 victory: sirdidymus01, Chucksracing, Fred Rice, Hcokeydude, John-Flores, Beldar1718, Bqthaman, Sportsperson107, fastwillie1212, Lone_wolf2006, Garwin7, Dragonswizdom, Aries.1994 and Perdegro.

See their original picks on the CommunityEds blog, where we, ahem, picked the Pens in seven, too.

Hmmm. Maybe if Marian Hossa had asked all of us ...

After two weeks of hockey in the Stanley Cup finals, we're right back where we started (not counting two weeks of playoff-beard growth). Before Game 1 in Detroit, 53 percent of SportsNation favored the Red Wings to win. Hours before Game 7 gets going at Joe Louis Arena, 51 percent of voters still expect the Red Wings to hoist the Cup.

No wonder Gary Bettman didn't seem bothered that his league kept scheduling its marquee games opposite the NBA Finals. But if there is a difference between then and now, it's the number of eyeballs that will be watching when the puck drops tonight.

And in this case, SportsNation is clearly not voting with its heart.

MAF through history is the last goalie I would want in net for the final game of anything. He cost canadian jrs titles especially a costly one against the USA. He doesn't seem to bring his best stuff in these type of games. I could be wrong for tomorrow night, but I just don't see him. He's young and will have a lot on his mind, but if the wings get to him early, he will be rattled and might allow some bad goals.

Even with the first two games this year the difference was Ozzie. He made the saves that MAF didn't. The pens forced the turnovers, got the SOG, and played their style. I think tonight if MAF can step up and make the saves the Pens stand a good chance of winning.

Tuesday was a busy night. You had the Magic and the Lakers in the NBA Finals and the Penguins and Red Wings dueling for the Cup. There was MLB action like the Red Sox and Yankees and Mets and Phillies. And Spencer Michels was talking green energy grid on Jim Lehrer. There's only so much one DVR can hold.

So if you happened to miss SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays, we're there for you.

The best saves of the night in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals might have gone to Rob Scuderi, a veteran defenseman whose one goal in 23 playoff games this season actually puts him ahead of his career scoring pace (three goals in 300 regular-season games). But despite coming to the aid of his goalie with three stops in the final 30 seconds of the Penguins' 2-1 win, Long Island's own will yield the battle of the crease back to goalies Marc-Andre Fleury and Chris Osgood in Game 7.

A slim majority of voters think the Penguins will win on the road in Game 7 (although if you take votes from Pennsylvania and Michigan out of the equation, it's a 50-50 split). But do the Wings have the edge in net?

GoWings2008

Ozzie kept the score the way it was with some great saves. He is on his game right now ... wish everyone else was too last night. I think the Wings played a really good game last night. The Pens played really tough defense and rolled with the punches really well. Home ice really has been the difference for them.

PGHCap1116

I think MAF has played very well at home. Stoning Cleary last night on the breakaway was awesome. He plays rock solid when he HAS to, but has been iffy when the game isn't on the line. I'm optimistic about Friday night because it's all on the line, but a little worried because the Joe has been his Kryptonite (3, 3, and 5 goals in 3 games).

Last month we asked you which sport produced the best Game 7s. Most of SportsNation said the NBA, except for (interestingly enough) Pennsylvania and Michigan, which said they would take a Game 7 hockey match over basketball any day. Well Pennsylvania and Michigan -- wish granted! After a thrilling do-or-die Game 6 in Pittsburgh, the Penguins have kept this series alive and forced a Game 7 back in Detroit.

Now, if you can contain yourself from so much excitement in one blog post, hockey fans, we'd love to know which team you think will raise Lord Stanley's Cup this Friday.

If anyone in Pittsbugh woke up to the sounds of Sonny and Cher on the radio, be afraid. Be very afraid. Just as Bill Murray's character in "Groundhog Day" is a Pittsburgh weatherman, fans in the Steel City should have their own uneasy familiarity with the scenario for Game 6 against the Red Wings tonight. One year ago, with a chance to send the series back to Detroit for a seventh game, the Penguins fell behind early and watched the Red Wings skate with the Cup. Will this year be a repeat?

WingsOverAvs

I like it to end tonight. I think that game 5 will just be too much mentally for a younger, more immature Pens team. And Dats made an immediate impact in his return. Hard to pick against the Wings.

It is that time of year. It is time for a statement game. It is time for us to show them who should be winning the Stanley Cup. I get told left and right that we are toast. That we can't win the series. I disagree. The Redwings put up their best performance on Saturday, not because they were any better than usual, but because we handed the game to them. You will not get that again.
