Tim Tebow may be gone, but that doesn't mean the Jets' quarterback situation is settled. General manager John Idzik said that there's going to be an open competition for the QB spot, including everyone from struggling incumbent Mark Sanchez to backup Matt Simms. Whether the quarterback who starts the season will be the same person who finishes it is another question, but the Jets are keeping what options they have open on all fronts.

The Jets have a pretty good problem -- they have four quarterbacks in camp who have all started in the NFL. Or at least it'd be a good problem without all the question marks: Mark Sanchez's confidence, Tim Tebow's arm, David Garrard's health and Greg McElroy's inexperience. It'll be interesting to see which direction the Jets go in this season -- if, in fact, they decide to go in a single direction at all.

Rex Ryan is making headlines even when he's on vacation. A photo taken of Ryan apparently revealed a tattoo on his shoulder of a woman (possibly his wife) wearing a Mark Sanchez jersey while Tebowing. We are not making any of this up.

At what point do we begin to describe the Jets' season as a farce? Was it when they signed Tim Tebow? Was it after Darrelle Revis was injured? What about when Mark Sanchez fumbled after running into his own teammate? If it wasn't beforehand, it definitely is now: New York is planning on parting ways with both Sanchez and Tim Tebow this offseason. The normally-stoic Tebow has been visibly irritated by his lack of playing time, while Sanchez has looked like he wants to be anywhere but playing football. One possible way forward for the Jets in the offseason: Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

Sanchez's future?

Trading Sanchez might be more difficult than it looks -- his contract is relatively expensive and his performance hasn't made teams confident.

Tebow's treatment?

Tim Tebow likely thought he would have a chance to compete for the starting job, but even with Mark Sanchez struggling, he can't get on the field for more than a few plays per game.

Tebow still has a winning record as a starting quarterback, which could lead to a return to Florida, or a second chance elsewhere in the NFL.

The Jets' playoff hopes were put to bed in Monday night's 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans. The game was a microcosm of the Jets' disaster of a season -- Mark Sanchez throwing interceptions, Tim Tebow coming in anytime Sanchez developed even the slightest rhythm, fumbles, missed plays and just a general lack of anything resembling good football. In a way, this might work out well for New York going into next season -- it has two games to determine what it wants to do with its quarterback situation -- and, no doubt, its coaching situation as well.

Jets' quarterbacks?

The Jets have been a defensive-minded team these past few years, but that hasn't helped them in this year's complete offensive collapse.

Monday night's announcers pointed out that the Jets substituted for Mark Sanchez the moment he started to play well, leading to the thought that they might be misusing him.

At this point, the Jets have nothing to lose, and if they were ever serious about giving Tim Tebow a chance to start, now would be the time to show it.

Greg McElroy may have won against the Cardinals last week, but Rex Ryan is sticking with Mark Sanchez for this week's matchup against the Jaguars. In the long term, this might be a better decision than we're giving it credit for -- winning games at this point might actually be a bit counterproductive for the 5-7 Jets, and it might be time to look forward to next season -- but it's still something of a strange one given Sanchez's benching last week. Given the available options at quarterback, which one would give the Jets the best chance to come away with a win in Jacksonville?

Start Sanchez?

Sanchez has the best draft pedigree out of all three quarterbacks, and he's owed the most money, but his performance this year has been less-than-exemplary.

Start McElroy?

McElroy only got a brief chance to play last week with Sanchez imploding and Tim Tebow injured, but he did manage to avoid mistakes and lead the Jets to their only score of the day.

Start Tebow?

Tebow's health is a big question mark going into this game, but were he healthy, he'd offer a much different look at the quarterback position than either Sanchez or McElroy.

The Mark Sanchez/Tim Tebow debate has consumed the back pages of New York tabloids for most of the season, but might they have been focusing on the wrong backup quarterback? Greg McElroy didn't exactly turn into Joe Namath upon replacing Mark Sanchez in the Jets' matchup against the Cardinals, but he did lead the Jets to their first and only score and the win without throwing an interception. Tebow could do nothing but watch from the sideline, out with an injury on the one day when he might have taken over for good in New York. Is McElroy the answer at quarterback for the Jets?

QB controversy?

McElroy's biggest contribution to the Jets' win may have been simply not turning the ball over -- a problem that has plagued Mark Sanchez.

On Tuesday, ESPN's "First Take" debated whether Rex Ryan's refusal to bench QB Mark Sanchez is costing the coach his job. The Jets are 3-6 and rapidly falling out of the playoff picture, and Sanchez hasn't helped much, completing only 52 percent of his passes. ESPN's Skip Bayless thinks Ryan's stubborn pride is costing him his job; Bayless (as usual) is all about giving Tim Tebow a shot. ESPN's Eric Mangini doesn't blame Ryan for his choice because Mangini doesn't think Tebow is a legitimate alternative to Sanchez as a starting quarterback. Meanwhile, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith thinks Sanchez's lack of development is on the coaching staff and may be more indicative of Ryan's ineffectiveness than simply his decision to keep Sanchez in the starting spot.

Rex Ryan says that he's sticking with Mark Sanchez despite the quarterback's poor performance as of late. Should he switch things up a bit?

On Monday, "First Take" debated the Jets' suddenly precarious quarterback situation. Mark Sanchez has completed less than half of his passes on the season, culminating in a disastrous performance in a 34-0 loss to the 49ers on Sunday. Some fans think it's time to make a change at quarterback. Eric Mangini thinks Tebow could help the Jets in a lesser role, but they have issues far beyond who's at QB. Stephen A. Smith doesn't totally blame Sanchez for the Jets' offensive performance, while Skip Bayless is chomping at the bit to see Tebow start. What's your take?
