Jane McManus (2:06 PM)
Hey everyone! Just sat down and ready to go.
The Duke (The Dirty Jersey)
What are the chances of LT getting the starting job?
Jane McManus (2:09 PM)
I think he has a chance. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has said he will play during the preseason, and LaDanian has looked good in the OTAs. Part of the reason he is here is because of a willingness to accept a backup role behind Shonn Greene, but I think he can perform his way into a larger role.
WestcoastJetsfan (Los angeles)
How has McKnight been doing as of lately? Is he at least keeping his cookies down?
Jane McManus (2:12 PM)
He has definitely improved his conditioning. Jayden also asked if he can fill in for Leon Washington, and I think there's still a tremendous amount of ground to be made up before that happens. McKnight has a good season to develop before the Jets need him to be a more pivotal player. He needs to prove his willingness to put in the work.
Louie Eggs (brooklyn)
Whats the timetable for Sanchez being 100%?
Jane McManus (2:13 PM)
Well, Mr. Eggs, Sanchez today said his knee felt better than it did all last year, and if there was a game tomorrow he'd be ready to play. He said there were times last season where he was aware of the leg, but that now he feels better than ever. Today, like Tuesday, he participated in full team drills.
big dom (brooklyn)
how is the revis situation gonna play out?
Jane McManus (2:17 PM)
That's an excellent question. Revis will be in later today to talk about the situation, and we'll have a better idea after that. But then it becomes the Mangold situation and the Harris situation and the Ferguson situation. I think I'd ask why the Jets are letting this happen to their core guys in a win now year and with all these journeymen on the roster for a year. There is a time to conserve money, but who do you lose? And if the Jets need to sell PSLs, this might not the be the best time for a bunch of contract holdouts. Look at what happened to Jay Feely over what? 300K?
I'm a Jets fan so I'm pessimistic by nature. Is it me or are the Jets in a little bit of trouble next year. They have to sign the core four, Braylon, Cro, Ellis and Holmes. We can't sign them all. Do you see Braylon coming back and the Jets letting Ellis and Holmes go along with Cro? If Wilson has a good year does he move to the #2 CB. Do we draft a WR and DE next year?
Jane McManus (2:20 PM)
I see your anxiety, and as you can see from what I said about the core four I think there are very real concerns coming up with the contract situations on the table. That said, the Jets can't worry about who they will try to keep next year. There is a full season to be played, players who will prove themselves. Some of these decisions might be self-evident by the time the CBA expires next year. Then there could be a possible lockout, and a new CBA to negotiate under.Baby steps.
Hi Jane, anything new on Adalius Thomas join gang green?
Jane McManus (2:22 PM)
Rich Cimini wrote a little about this, saying that the possibility of Thomas coming had lessened somewhat in recent weeks. In July, the Jets will have more flexibility with who they bring along but Thomas doesn't fill the same kind of need someone like backup QB Mark Brunell would.
Mike (Yonkers, NY)
Stupid question/comment...why do I feel like Ainge will be a star in the NFL? Not with the Jets of course...
Jane McManus (2:24 PM)
That is sweet. Ainge seems like a very nice young man but I would be surprised if he makes the 53-man roster this season.
How has the WR corps looked thus far? And are Sanchez and Holmes beginning to get on the same page when it comes to timing, route running, etc?
Jane McManus (2:26 PM)
You know who looks good? Jerricho Cotchery. He has been shagging passes all over the field during the OTA. That said, Rex Ryan said Edwards had impressed him during the voluntary portion of the season. Holmes is strong as well. With those three guys sharp, Brad Smith and David Clowney and the other aspiring receivers better work hard and learn special teams.
IRA (Staten Island)
Jane, Great story about Kevin and God Bless him. So are you convined now that O'connell will probably beat out Ainge?
Jane McManus (2:28 PM)
Hey Ira! Welcome!Yes I am convinced. He has moved up in the rotation and I'm predicting it'll be Sanchez and O'Connell on the roster this season, with Clemens and Ainge cut.O'Connell threw some very tight spirals today, which raises the question, why did New England cut him?
Lol wow way to dodge those questions...They can't worry about who they are going to keep next year? Are you serious? Mr. T's cap management is what has been getting him so much praise and you say the Jets can't look ahead in to their future roster? Make a prediction or give some insight jeez..Don't just take lay up questions about Sanchez's knee and the Revis contract.
Jane McManus (2:34 PM)
Let's take the running backs as an example. Two years ago I would have said you have to make Leon Washington happy, and keep Thomas Jones. Clearly, a lot happened last season that rearranged all the thinking on that. I think you can look at the WR corps in the same way right now. If Braylon Edwards continues to drop balls and Cotchery plays lights out and then Holmes gets hurt, that answer a lot of questions. The Jets can't sign all of them, but I can't predict injuries and performance and jump to next season.
Vinny Gorgeous (Otisville NY)
Is Taylor really excited to be a Jet or is this just a paycheck for him? Whats the consensus around around camp regarding this upcoming seasons production?
Jane McManus (2:36 PM)
That's a good question. I don't think he's gotten a Jets tattoo a la LaDanian Tomlinson. What you can say about Taylor is that he is here now during the voluntary portion of the season. I don't believe he is moving his family up from Miami.
Sally Bugs (Bronx NY)
Are the Jets "suits" concerned about not selling all the PSL's and is it going to be a problem for the fans regarding blackouts, contracts?
Jane McManus (2:40 PM)
I think it will be an issue. I believe Woody Johnson has come out and said there won't be NY blackouts because of PSLs, but 10,000 PSL seats are still available as of last count. That's more than the Giants, and the Jets didn't put PSLs on most upper bowl seats. The contract situation, with a few potential holdouts, is a bit of a distraction. I wonder if it deters a few fence-sitters from buying season tickets.
Mikey Scars (Brooklyn NY)
How committed is the team to its long-term winning? It seems to be a win it all this year type of mentality and we'll worry about the future in the future.
Jane McManus (2:43 PM)
Another good question. I think Woody Johnson wants to reinvent this franchise as a winning team. He has done a lot to upgrade the facilities and get notable players like LaDanian Tomlinson and Brett Favre. I agree that with the short-term contracts, there are questions about how long the current lineup can win, but each offseason has been a bit of whirlwind and Tannenbaum and Johnson seem committed to putting together competitive teams.
Jeff (NY, NY)
I don't think that the PSL is the only issue with ticket sales. Look at the price of the tickets, as well. Who wants to pay $5000 to buy $200 tickets in the end zone, which are really $250 when you factor in the pre-season. Plus, what happens if there is a lock out?
Jane McManus (2:44 PM)
slight conspiracy theory here, but i feel its safe to assume that the jets let Feeley go because they desperately wanted JT. i though the Taylor signing was a good one, but i have a hard time envisioning a scenario where polk doesnt cost us a couple of tight games this year. Just hope those games arent in January....
Jane McManus (2:47 PM)
That's true, but the Jets would have inked Feely if he'd agreed to $300K less. That deal was out there. Today, Folk made 7 of 7 FG attempts, some over 50 yards in length. But overall, he's been spotty. The kicker may not be a very well-respected position, but it is directly responsible for putting points on the board.
Nicky Scarfo (Philly)
Besides Revis' contract are the Jets going to renegotiate any other contracts?
Jane McManus (2:50 PM)
The Jets will move on to Nick Mangold and David Harris, and D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Mangold said he thinks it's 50-50 whether or not he shows up to the mandatory minicamp on Monday.
JayJay the Jet (Brooklyn)
I've read the 2nd highest paid corner gets paid $10 million a year, i assume this is going to be a major sticking point in the revis negotiations. Anyway the Jets pay the outrageous sum of 16 million because the raiders were dumb enough to or do they force Revis to accpet 12-14 million?
Jane McManus (2:52 PM)
Darrelle Revis wants to be the highest paid corner. If they pay him $1 more than the Raiders paid theirs, that's enough. True that there is a gap between the 1st and 2nd, and I imagine if things get farther along the Jets and Revis' agents will talk about where in that gap he'd be willing to fall.
Cousin Sal (Brooklyn NY)
Whats the team's feeling with being on Hard Knocks?
Jane McManus (2:56 PM)
I think the franchise is pretty excited about it as a whole. A few players are worrying that it will bring out the worst in the showboats, but overall it could do a lot to bring a wider audience to the Jets.
Jane McManus (2:57 PM)
Thanks everyone. Still have a lot to write off of today's OTA!
