Chat with Adam Rubin
Welcome to ESPNNewYork.com! On Tuesday, New York Mets writer Adam Rubin will stop by to take your baseball questions.
Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
Send your questions now and join Rubin Tuesday at noon ET!
Adam Rubin (11:51 AM)
Thanks for joining me. I'll start a few minutes early, since there are plenty of questions already submitted ...
Greg (New York)
I'm sure Omar has no intentions of trading Mejia, Davis or Niese to get starting pitching help. Is Fernando Martinez an attractive prospect right now? And is Wilmer Flores untouchable at this point as well?
Adam Rubin (11:53 AM)
Fernando Martinez, as you may have noticed, hit a walk-off grand slam last night for Buffalo. But his injury history will diminish his value. Fernando has averaged only 78 games a season in four full years as a professional because of assorted injuries. And he already missed significant time this season because of a left hamstring strain. ... Wilmer Flores is the biggest prospect in the minors at this point. I don't think you can ever say never on trading him, but I don't foresee it happening for a rental player.
Hello Adam, does the Mets recent success almost make life more difficult for the front office? On one hand, success would usually equate to fan interest and ticket sales, on the other hand, if the Mets stay in the race with the current roster and eventually fade out of the race, the fanbase may be enraged by not acquiring the right pieces for a playoff push. Adam, wouldn't a deal for a starter address two areas? I would assume a starter allows Takahashi to return to the bullpen. How do you feel about that as well as how long do you think Dickey will be a success? And of course Adam, when the heck is Bobby Parnell coming up? Thanks Adam.
Adam Rubin (11:56 AM)
Lot to digest there ...Certainly, the Mets haven't made many notable midseason trades. Francoeur-for-Church wasn't exactly riveting. And it's way back in 2007 now that they got Luis Castillo from the Twins for two prospects: Drew Butera and Dustin Martin.I suppose the perception would be that the Mets are asleep at the wheel if they don't address the rotation by the trading deadline. However, I spoke to a Mets official yesterday who made two points:1. Omar does not want to unload the farm system, especially after witnessing how the fan base has responded to the call-ups of young players.2. If Dickey keeps this up, is an outside pitcher really worth it, considering the cost. Of course, by July 31, we'll have a much better sense of whether Dickey can persist at this level.John Maine's return could strengthen the bullpen assuming that prompts Takahashi to return to relief.
Jerry (Sesame Street)
Who would be a better SNL host: David Wright or Cookie Monster?
Adam Rubin (11:57 AM)
Probably Cookie Monster. David, as he would probably admit, is a little bland. Them again, Derek Jeter is as PC as they come. And he was OK, no?
Any update on Havens and Captain Kirk's injuries in Binghamton?
Adam Rubin (11:58 AM)
Reese Havens has an oblique injury at Double-A. He's officially day-to-day, but you would have to think it would be wise to keep him out longer since he dealt with that issue during spring training, too.Kirk Nieuwenhuis apparently had the shoulder in a sling Sunday, after making a great diving catch the day before. No word on the severity yet, though.
Do you think Pagan is going to get alot of time in Right field when Beltran comes back when he isn't giving Calos a breather in center?
Adam Rubin (12:01 PM)
Early on, I expect Jerry Manuel will ease Beltran into the lineup, buying time for a real decision to be made. Certainly, if Beltran is playing two-thirds of the time early on, and Pagan and Francoeur play two-third as well, that works for the short term.If Beltran's mobility is reduced, Jerry has floated the idea of right field, but I doubt that would come to fruition because I doubt Beltran would buy into that. And after January's fiasco with surgery permission, I doubt the Mets pick another fight.Francoeur's hot stretch notwithstanding, you have to believe his playing time will be reduced by Beltran's eventual return, with Pagan seeing action in RF.
Sagar (Ocean, NJ)
If a starter were to go down, who would be the first to be called up? Gee, Misch?
Adam Rubin (12:01 PM)
I suppose Misch. But if it were anything very severe, you would imagine that would force the Mets into the trade market.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Which New York Mets Players Past Or Present who's Fathers Played for the New York Mets?
Adam Rubin (12:03 PM)
Ike Davis and the now-departed Gary Matthews Jr., who should officially be released today, as far as current players. Going back, off the top of my head, Todd Hundley.
Bill (Boston, MA)
Adam, with reports that Maine was topping at 87-88 on Sunday, why would the Mets be rushing to bring him back? Didn't Jerry just say he wants to see him at 91-92 before he's activated? I mean, Maine at 87-88 is exactly the guy they DL'ed with, lets be honest, no discernable injury...just a matter of being fed up with him. So whats changed?
Adam Rubin (12:04 PM)
I don't think the Mets are rushing Maine back. He didn't even originally want to land on the DL. He'll start Friday for Buffalo. Jerry said a week ago that he'd like to see Maine get three rehab starts. That'll be the second one. Maine said he hopes/believes it'll be the last. While Jerry said he'd like to see Maine hitting 91, 92 mph, I'm not sure that's ever going to happen regularly again.
Adam, is St. Lucie playing without a pitching coach? How can you explain the uniformly awful performance thus far by that staff...which happens to include several of the Mets' best pitching prospects?
Adam Rubin (12:05 PM)
Phil Regan, the former Orioles manager, is the pitching coach there. And I think you'll find that there's a big difference between having success in the South Atlantic League and the Florida State League.
regarding your comments on FMart, does he still project as a possible starter in the OF next yr?
Adam Rubin (12:06 PM)
Beltran is still under contract for 2011. And Fernando is still only 21. So even if it's 2012, I'm not writing it off.
Chris (cortland NY)
with the way beltran is slowly building up in extended spring training games 3 to 5 inning in cf in 4 or 5 days, could we see his minor league rehab assignment start by next weekend?
Adam Rubin (12:07 PM)
I addressed that here:http://proxy.espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/4794/in-depth-rotation-hockey-and-beltranI don't see the Mets rushing him into minor league rehab games, which would start a 20-day clock for his return. I think he'll play at least a few nine-inning intrasquad games first.
Ron Davis (Rockaway NJ)
What minor leaguers would the Mets be willing to trade in the right circumstances for a big pitcher. what is the going rate for some of the better starters avail.
Adam Rubin (12:08 PM)
What does Mike Hessman and Val Pascucci land you?
Since May 1, Thole is hitting .349/.426/.602, with 16 extra-base hits, 10 walks and 11 strikeouts. Does the organization believe he will be the 2011 and beyond starting Major league Catcher?
Adam Rubin (12:09 PM)
Talking to scouts, I think most have forecast Josh as either a major league platoon player or backup, not as a full-time No. 1. It would at least make sense to offer Rod Barajas arbitration after the year. That way, you may get draft pick compensation. And it wouldn't be a bad thing if he returned for 2011.
What is Niese's ceiling? #3 starter?
Adam Rubin (12:10 PM)
That's probably fair.
I read the Mariners are wanting Niese in a potential Cliff Lee deal, would the Mets have the prospects to get him without dealing Niese?
Adam Rubin (12:10 PM)
Sagar (Ocean, NJ)
Hey Adam, I was wondering if there were any discussions in the front office to bring up a reliever and demote jennry mejia so that he can develop. Mejia has pitched well, but it would probably be best for him to develop into a starter. I hear Bobby Parnell is doing decently in AAA. Is there any chance that happens?
Adam Rubin (12:12 PM)
I've given up on the Mejia-to-the-minors-to-start dialogue. I guess they don't intend to do it. A couple of weeks ago, Dan Warthen said the Triple-A staff recommended Bobby Parnell or Manny Acosta as the next relief call-up. But then you check Bobby's lines and you don't see great results sometimes. Anyway, if Maine is back soon, the Mets should be trimming the pitching staff by one, not adding to it.
Sanpete (Bayside, NY)
Adam, Great job, per usual. Really seems you have hit your stride with Met coverage at ESPN NY... gives you the daily outlet. Isn't a pursuit of Oswalt the no brainer for this team? he is signed for an extended period, and basically fits nicely in with Santana's competitive window. To have those three guys at the top this year and the next would make for a very competitive team, given Reyes and Wright coming into prime years... Is it just money with him, and if so... well that just stinks.
Adam Rubin (12:13 PM)
I just don't see the Mets adding the payroll and parting with the prospects. And I had a Houston person tell me a few weeks ago no way. Things always change, but I'm skeptical.
Out of the pitchers on the "market" (Millwood, Lee, Oswalt, Westbrook, Guthrie) who do you think the Mets have the best chance of acquiring?
Adam Rubin (12:14 PM)
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported the Indians may not even trade Westbrook, but I have to believe if the Mets ultimately did acquire a pitcher, it would be more along those lines than a blockbuster deal. At least Omar and Mark Shapiro are really close, so there's a chance there.
Will we have to wait until June 2011 for the Mets to outright release Oliver Perez?
Adam Rubin (12:15 PM)
Well, at that point, he'll only be owed about $6 million, so it's possible.
Did Fernando Nieve's arm fall off yet?
Adam Rubin (12:15 PM)
He should have plenty of time to recover now that Jerry doesn't trust him as much and is on the Elmer Dessens bandwagon.
Dave (Toms River, NJ)
Right now if you had to sign either Ryan Howard or Ike Davis for a five year deal who would you pickup and why?
Adam Rubin (12:16 PM)
Ryan Howard. And I like Ike.
adam, perhaps i'm just ignorant but i didnt think the M's gave up a niese or davis type prospect when they traded him to the phils. why would they expect a better player when the recieving team will have less starts out of lee?
Adam Rubin (12:18 PM)
They can get two first-round picks just for offering him arbitration after the year. And while the consensus was they didn't give to Philadelphia what Philadelphia gave up to Toronto for Roy Halladay, they gave up prospects.I just looked how Aumont was doing and it looks like he's struggling, though:http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=P&sid=milb
Chris (cortland NY)
would you say best case for beltran coming back is right after all star break?
Adam Rubin (12:19 PM)
Hard to speculate, but the All-Star Game is four weeks from today. Coming back right after that seems like a fair assumption. I guess it would be personally notable for Beltran to return during the June 28-30 series against the Marlins in San Juan, but right now that just feels too soon.
Mr. Rubin - With respect to the Manager's job security, it seems as though if the Mets' starters pitch well, no one talks about Manuel's job. If, on the other hand, they pitch poorly and the Mets lose, we again question the job security. That would seem to speak more to the GM than the Manager. Agree?
Adam Rubin (12:20 PM)
I agree that teams on hot streaks don't have their manager's job security questioned.I think, either way, the construction of the team is the GM's responsibility and Jerry is pretty much along for the ride.
Are Davis and Niese untouchable in possible deals? Is anyone?
Adam Rubin (12:21 PM)
I don't see any way the Mets trade either. As I've mentioned, a Mets person I was speaking with yesterday was glowing about how fans have responded to the young players and that's translated into a significant boost in ticket sales -- as if that were a revelation, by the way.
Do you think Tatis will go soon? The guy makes me sick.
Adam Rubin (12:24 PM)
Not sure what other righty bat for the bench is poised to displace him. When Luis Castillo returns from the DL, Tejada goes down. There will have to be one other decision when Beltran returns. At that point, I suppose Tatis could be vulnerable, but you would presume Jesus Feliciano returns to the minors at that point instead. There are so many variables, such as injuries, to consider.
How happy are you to never have to answer another question about GMJ and The Cat??
Adam Rubin (12:25 PM)
They were both tremendously pleasant people to deal with.
Sagar (Ocean, NJ)
Hey Adam, anyway tatis gets replaced with hessman? Hessman is hurt right now, but he leads his league in homers and RBIs and is still right around .290. Tatis is a good versatile bench player, but Hessman can play third and first as well and would be an offensive boost for the bench.
Adam Rubin (12:25 PM)
Just learned for my minor league report that I'll be posting on the blog tomorrow that Hessman will be out for a month, likely.
Dave (Hillsdale, NJ)
Adam, don't the Mets have to keep getting Carter at bats while he's hot? I dont know why Jerry insists on giving tatis spot starts...
Adam Rubin (12:26 PM)
It's three straight righties in the Cleveland series, so Carter starts all three. Then there's still the DH in the Yankees series. The only time Jerry chose Tatis over Carter was Saturday against the left-handed Matusz. And starting Tatis allowed Wright to DH and get a rest, of sorts, I supppose.
Anthony De Rosa (Hoboken, NJ)
Are the Mets better off holding on to their prospects or making a run for it this year and offering up Niese and others for Lee?
Adam Rubin (12:27 PM)
I'm in the holding onto prospects camp and actually for building something the right way.
Any truth to the Mets interest in Y. Maya? Is he any good?
Adam Rubin (12:28 PM)
The number of questions about this guy relative to the importance of him to the Mets is astounding, to be honest. He was working out at the Mets complex in the Dominican Republic, at least earlier this year. So the organization should have a very comprehensive scouting report to assess him.
Roger (Albany, NY)
Seems like Chris Carter is more effective playing a full game (he's enjoying DH) but not as much as a pinch hitter. Is his defense bad enough to keep him from spot starting to give OF or 1B a day off?
Adam Rubin (12:29 PM)
Yes. ... And because he's a lefty hitter like Ike, it doesn't make a ton of sense at first base particularly.
Also, why is Raul Valdes, a 30 year old guy, carrying the Hannah Montana backpack? What about Jenrry Mejia?
Adam Rubin (12:30 PM)
Reliever with the least service time. Valdes was called up in-season. Mejia has been there the whole year. I honestly hadn't check recently, but I thought it was a rotation, though, with those two and first-year second-string bullpen catcher Rafael Arroyo.
I am a little concerned with the lack of consistency throughout the lineup. Wright, Bay, Frenchy, Davis all appear to be streaky hitters. Do you see the Mets making a play for a more consistent offensive threat or do they believe that Beltran will fill that void
Adam Rubin (12:31 PM)
I can't see any scenario where the Mets trade for a starting position player. It's got to be pitching -- maybe more so an eighth-inning-type arm than a starting pitcher.
Fanfave (NY, NY)
At what point is Jerry/Omar officially off the hot seat this season?
Adam Rubin (12:32 PM)
Here's a prediction: Jerry will be back next season in the dugout. Omar is under contract for two more years, too. I still wouldn't rule out Omar at some point becoming more of a senior adviser and John Ricco as the GM. That was in the works good or bad for a while.
Alex (Mobile, AL)
Do the mets make the playoffs without an addition before the deadline? And if they add a pitcher like Millwood or Westbrook, does this do much to increase their chance of playoffs?
Adam Rubin (12:33 PM)
Unless the rest of the National League is just going to stay as a pack for the rest of the season, when push comes to shove, I'm still skeptical the Mets will actually be in the postseason, no matter what.
chris (State College, PA)
do think the mets will hold out on trade talks until the starters market is decided/maine shows what he can do, or do you think there going to try to make an early splash?
Adam Rubin (12:33 PM)
Definitely closer to the deadline. Definitely gives them a better read on Maine, as well as on Dickey.
Don't you think it's possible the Mets could get Oswalt for not a HUGE package? I mean, if they could get him for Meija and then a couple B level prospects, don't you have to do it? His contract is peanuts compared to what Lee will demand this offseason. And Oswalt is arguably better...
Adam Rubin (12:34 PM)
I don't think the Astros will be asking peanuts for Roy Oswalt. Just a hunch.
Also, I'm going to the game tonight in Cleveland. Any score prediction?
Adam Rubin (12:34 PM)
It looks like Masterson has found his groove. 3-2 Indians.
Adam Rubin (12:35 PM)
Just messing with people, by the way. Mets will, of course, win.
Adam Rubin (12:36 PM)
