Chris Sheridan (11:59 AM)
Good afternoon from New York, where I am anxious to hear what chatters in Cleveland and Miami have to say. But remember, this is a family chat room. So keep things PG-rated at worst.
Big Al (Charlotte)
Do you see the Knicks making a desperate trade/offer or holding off and waiting for next year?
Chris Sheridan (12:01 PM)
Best thing they can do is keep as much cap flexibility as possible for summer of '11. Going to be another long, long season at MSG.
Why don't I buy the hype that Miami is a contender right now? No matter how good they are 3 stars still need a bench and role players to make it deep in the playoffs. Who is playing center for this team? Who is shooting threes?
Chris Sheridan (12:02 PM)
Do not be delusional. That is going to be a powerhouse. Mike Miller is the shooter. Joel Anthony is the center for now. Jamaal Magloire can probably be coaxed back as the enforcer.
How high are the chances that a marquee free-agent (Brad Miller, Jordan Farmar, Richard Jefferson, Udonis Haslem) signs with Miami for 1 year/vet minimum and then gets a bigger contract in 2011 ?
Chris Sheridan (12:04 PM)
Highly unlikely. Player needs to be with team for three years to have Bird rights, which would allow Heat to re-sign them above the salary cap.And before anyone asks, NO, I do not foresee Shaq returning to Miami. That ship has sailed.
Frank (Coram, NY)
Hi Chris! Being a Knick fan I am disappointed with James' choice. But being a person I am more upset by the callous handling of the hour show by him. Do you think he should of called the other teams before the show? (especially Cleveland)
Chris Sheridan (12:06 PM)
I think he should have spoken from the heart to the people of Ohio. As I tweeted last night, it will be interesting to see what happens to LeBron's Q rating in the weeks/months/years ahead. Anybody in Cleveland know if the 6-story billboard is down yet? Sam Amico of Pro Basketball News said fans were throwing rocks at it last night.
Chris what do you think about the David Lee trade? I like they got a young talented player in return and can keep the cap space for trades and next year.
Chris Sheridan (12:09 PM)
Horrible trade. If they had to do it all over again, I'd imagine Knicks would have locked up Lee at that same number - 6 yrs, $80 million - and rebuilt from there. Over/under on Knicks victories is 29.
Jacob T (IN)
Good morning Chris. Are the Bulls done for this offseason? Any possibilty at re-signing Brad Miller and bringing in JJ Redick? Is Shaq a possibility?
Chris Sheridan (12:10 PM)
J.J. might be the most desireable free agent left out there, but Magic can match any offer he gets -- and Otis Smith says that's what Orlando will do. I'll believe it when I see it, but Otis kept his word a year ago when he said similar things about matching M.Gortat.
Chris what were some of the reasons that made you believe until the end, that Lebron would pick N.Y. over any of the other teams in this race?
Chris Sheridan (12:13 PM)
Believed they had the best cast of complementary players to surround him with. Know he loves NY. watched him flirt w/NY for 2 years. Didn't think he'd want to be Robin to Wade's batman. Believed he would want to beat the best to be considered the best.
I think the Knicks should make a run at Iguodala, if they can get him w/o taking on Brand's contract too. Would make a nice young core with Galinari, Amare, and Randolph? What would it take to get him?
Chris Sheridan (12:15 PM)
Knicks have almost nothing left to trade. gave so many assets away in the Jared Jeffries salary dump: Jordan Hill, a 2012 1st round pick, the right to swap picks in '11. They are doomed.
Do you think my Lakers are fearing the Heat?
Chris Sheridan (12:17 PM)
Hell no. They are relishing the opportunity to play the Heat. And as I opined in the free agency Daily Dime last night, Miami can't match their size, Kobe can shut down Wade and Artest can get into Bron's head more than that video of the burning Cavs jersey did last night on The Decision special.
Chris, why is Miami trading for Bosh, as supposed to just signing him? Whats in it for them?
Chris Sheridan (12:19 PM)
If sign-and-trade does happen with Bosh, it'll be to get Toronto a $16.5 million trade exception. Or, they can get a guy like Haslem and have the difference in salaries be the size of their trade exception.
Chris Sheridan (12:20 PM)
And trade exceptions are particularly valuable because you can acquire players without sending back matching salaries. That is why Sam Presti dealt Rashard Lewis to Orlando for a 2nd-round pick. He then used that trade exception to facillitate further building of his sleeping giant.
What's your take on the balance of power being shifted to the EAST? And if thats the case what playoff seed do you see the Thunder being next year?
Chris Sheridan (12:23 PM)
Don't believe that is the case. I think the attention will be focused on Miami, but still lots of strong teams in West. Re Thunder, I have them as No. 2 in West behind Lakers, just ahead of Rockets.
Chris in your opinion is this d wades team or lebron james and if its wades team is lebron now the robbin to wades batman?
Chris Sheridan (12:25 PM)
The Heat are Wade's team. He has 7 years of built-up loyalty from those fans, plus a championship ring.
Dan (Williston, VT)
LeBron's decision to play in Miami and form (potentially) the greatest "Big 3" ever is ultimately good for the NBA. Agree or disagree?
Chris Sheridan (12:27 PM)
Very good question, and I am on the fence on that one. Going to shift a lot of attention away from good teams such as Boston, Orlando, OKC. There might only be three Must-See games next season: first Miami at Cleveland game, and both Lakers- Heat games.
Why are you so slow Chris, surely being on here for a little while you can go a little quicker with the Q&A
Chris Sheridan (12:29 PM)
Because my computer has taking such a pounding in recent weeks, it is acting up similarly to how Cavs fans must be feeling. Screen is actually drooping. Have to prop it up with a coffee cup.
Chris Sheridan (12:30 PM)
By the way, I have butchered whatever coffee record Joey Chestnut may have held.
David (Los angeles)
The way this offseason has come about...Do you think the Lakers are still the favorites to win the championship again? Are we 3-Peating Yes or No?
Chris Sheridan (12:30 PM)
Do you think Fisher will be back with the Lakers? Also, I have heard LA may look to trade Odom, also one commentator mentioned yesterday they may be interested in trying to get Hedo Turkoglo?? Any basis whatsoever to any of that???
Chris Sheridan (12:32 PM)
I think Fish will be back as long as Lakers do not ask him to take a pay cut. He and Blake will be a timeshare. As for Odom-Turkoglu, I think the Lakers would at least consider that. Not so sure about Raptors. They are trying to mend fences with Hedo. Need to see first if they can get Haslem in S
Can we consider players like Varnado or Pittman as possible starters for the Heat at center or do you think that at the starting spot we will see Joel Anthony?
Chris Sheridan (12:33 PM)
I think they have to keep Anthony. They like him, he blocks shots, and the rooks would get manhandled.
Answer!! Why do you think the Knicks are going to be so bad?
Chris Sheridan (12:38 PM)
Because they gutted their team to go after LeBron and came away empty. Stoudemire will produce the same numbers Lee did (if he stays healthy), Turiaf isn't very good, Randolph plays same position as Amare, Gallo will not get the open looks he would have if LBJ came.
Do you think LeBron grossly underestimated the hit his image and brand would take by making this move? I haven't seen a writer or a fan outside Miami that hasn't completely turned on him.
Chris Sheridan (12:39 PM)
I agree with what Mark Cuban said, and I'll leave it at that.
PLEASE ANSWER!!!! What exactly is a traded player exception?
Chris Sheridan (12:42 PM)
Is is akin to a phantom player/cap slot. Usually in NBA trades, salaries have to match. But a team with a trade exception can acquire a player into that exception without sending equal money back. If Toronto gets a $16.5 trade exception, they could (in theory) acquire a $16.5 million player in exchange for a second-round pick.
Chris, your thoughts about Cleveland fan/Dan Gilbert making an immediate 180 about face in regards to how they felt about LeBron? Would ANYBODY want to work for an organization that treats a star that gave 7 AMAZING years like that??
Chris Sheridan (12:44 PM)
I enjoyed Dan's rants last night. I always enjoy owners who rant (see Mark Cuban, 2006 Finals). Makes my job more enjoyable, because it is more fun to write about ranting owners than placid owners.
Kobe suffered a PR nightmare that doesn't even come close to Lebron's and yet no one seems to remember it. The fact of the matter is that Lebron's decision will be remembered for how successful it is, not for his TV special.
Chris Sheridan (12:45 PM)
We shall see about that.
Chris, where do you think Richard Jefferson will end up. I still personally think hes a good player just had a rough year for San Antonio with there system.
Chris Sheridan (12:48 PM)
I do not believe he would have opted out of his deal if he did not have a wink-wink subsequent deal in place with the Spurs. If he leaves and is forced to sign for MLE or lower, he'll blow Bonzi Wells out of the water for worst contract decision ever (by a player).
Nicholas (Dominican Republic)
Who plays pg in this starting 5?. . . . .Wade Lebron Bosh Miller Joel anthony
Chris Sheridan (12:49 PM)
They really don't need one, but they still have Chalmers. Did Michael Jordan ever have a HOF point guard alongside him? Did Kobe?
Worse team next year; Toronto or Cleveland?
Chris Sheridan (12:49 PM)
Alan (New York)
I'm very disappointed that the Knicks parted ways with David Lee. I know some thought his gaudy numbers were flawed, but he worked hard, seemed intelligent and really wanted to be a Knick. Did the Knicks get good value in the sign and trade?
Chris Sheridan (12:52 PM)
As i said earlier, Knicks got fleeced. and you are correct: David never wanted to leave, and gave his all every game for five years. He was a keeper, but he also was a victim of circumstances. Still, he has 80 million reasons to put NY in his rear-view mirror.
Chris,I work in downtown Cleveland. The Giant LeBron Poster is still up........ Would you prefer I light it on fire, or continue throwing rocks at it?
Chris Sheridan (12:55 PM)
I would prefer neither. But I think Cleveland fans should should have a rip-it-to-pieces party sponsored by Dan Gilbert.
This is an unprecedented power move of 3 guys in their prime sacrificing for the big picture of championship glory. You think we will ever see something like this again?
Chris Sheridan (12:56 PM)
No. This was a one-time event.
Everything about LeBron since the Celtics series has just seemed....wrong. His performance seemed wrong....the timelines associated with his decision seemed wonrg (I can't imagine he really only made his decision that morning)....the 'event' last night....it just seems wrong, wrong, wrong....like you knew something was up with Locke during season 5 of LOST.....just wrong.
Chris Sheridan (12:58 PM)
Has been quite the drama express. BTW, Art Modell quoted today (can't remember exactly where I saw it) saying LeBron will never surpass him as the most hated person in Cleveland. Modell said he hasn't been back to NE Ohio since he moved the Browns to Baltimore. LBJ will have no such luxury.
With all the hoopla from this offseason dying down answer this question. Does this cause future players to look forward to free agency or prefer to resign with their current squads. Thus avoiding the scrutiny.
Chris Sheridan (1:00 PM)
Neither. This was a once-in-a-generation event because of the magnitude of both the player involved and the fortunes of all the cities/teams that had their hopes pinned to him.
Do you think Lebron was really that shocked at the burning of the jerseys? What did he expect? A going away party?
Chris Sheridan (1:00 PM)
To me, it appeared that video shook him up.
Damon (San Diego! Whoo whoo!)
I don't think the Gilbert letter was mature but I think it makes the NBA more fun!
Chris Sheridan (1:01 PM)
Couldn't agree more.
Chris Sheridan (1:02 PM)
That's a wrap, folks. Sorry I couldn't get to more questions. There were 1,700 of them in the queue. Until next time ....
