Ohm (2:00 PM)
Hey everybody... what you guys got on your mind today?
Ohm (2:00 PM)
Pete... take it you are a Michigan fan... are you guys going to make the tournament? I'm still confident Sparty will.
Did you think Sparty will make the NIT this year or no postseason at all?
Ohm (2:02 PM)
Dave... I think State is still going to the NCAA tournament. Just have to win three more games, in my mind. Also, I think the tourney committee will give State some credit for their tournament history... but still very disappointed with how this season has gone. At least there has been improvement shown in the past two games. They got a pulse again. Just need to clean up turnovers and defense and get Durrell Summers to show up!
Hi Ohm! Not sure if you take baseball questions, but I was wondering what type of year you think David Wright will have? Will he be a 30 HR hitter with 25 SB's? Next week I want your thoughts on the Jets draft. Thanks!
Ohm (2:05 PM)
Rachel, hi! Well, I usually try not to answer too many baseball questions simply because it's kind of out of my wheelhouse but since DWright is one of my fantasy baseball players -- I have had him in a keeper league for three or four years now -- I kind of know what he's done and what he is capable of. I think he can be that 30 HR hitter, but it's really super hard to do that with his home stadium. CitiField simply saps him of his power. I don't think there is much else to say. He does great when he is on the road. The stolen bases is something he can come close to. The HRs... I would be very happy with 30 but he may be more like 20-25 with CitiField. As for Jets draft... let me refer you to Rich Cimini's chats. He is our terrific Jets beat writer. I think his chat is on Friday. :)
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who is the Worst New York Giants & New York Jets Quarterbacks that you have ever saw?
Ohm (2:06 PM)
Chris... in person or just over the years? In person, I haven't seen anybody other than Eli really for the Giants. Sure, I saw the other QBs during preseason. As for the Jets, I have seen Pennington, Testaverde, Lucas, Favre, Clemens, Sanchez. But I didn't get to see all the really bad years for the Jets in person.
Shakoor (Newark the Brick City)
Hey Ohm What do you think of the giants taking Bruce Carter in the draft Dude is a beast.
Ohm (2:08 PM)
Shakoor... I haven't seen Bruce play... during college season, I watch Michigan State pretty much. But I read a bit on Carter... sounds like he has speed and is a special teams impact guy which the Giants certainly can use.
What's the oline gonna be like? I know they will draft someone. Will O'hara and seubert be healthy in sept? Do you think they will resign boothe? I thought he should've started the last 2 games
Ohm (2:10 PM)
Bobby... hard to answer all of this in Feb but here's my guess... I think the Giants will draft an O-line player sometime during the draft with so much uncertainty with the potential lockout. O'Hara and Seubert, in my mind, will come back... not sure when. I think O'Hara will be back before Seubert though, just my guess. I think they will try to bring back Boothe. He did well last year and is a strong backup. I think if Andrews' back is healthy, he could be the starting LT, with Diehl at LG and O'Hara at C.
Will Phillips ever get back to his draft year abilities and and how can the Gmen fix they glaring safety coverage deficiencies......neither one has mastered the cover 2.
Ohm (2:13 PM)
I don't know this difinitively... but I think he might've needed a year to get back to his old form after such serious knee surgery. Hard to expect him to just get back to 100 percent. He may never be the same, really. But the fact that he came back and started every game is a very good sign. Give him one more year to see if he can regain old form. As for fixing their glaring safety deficiencies... they did pretty well up until the last three games. So I wouldn't call it glaring. They might be better if they can get better linebacker play as well, that way, one or two of the safeties don't have to play up as much as they did during the season.
It is truly amazing an offense that gets 6000 yards and 39 TOs at the same time..........They can be one of the top 5 scary offenses sans the mental mistakes as well as the physical ones
Ohm (2:15 PM)
Well, I think you are thinking like the Giants coaching staff and brass is probably thinking. They don't need to make huge changes. Just add a few pieces. Perhaps get a tight end... keep the receivers healthy and hopefully Eli throws fewer picks. Steve Smith's health concerns me a bit though. Eli needs his security blanket to be at his best. Smith helps open things up even more for Nicks and Manningham. Remember, Barden is also coming off surgery as well.
Vinnie (Columbus, OH)
Ohm's Law! In most, but not all cases, teams have a small window in which they possess the talent to win the Super Bowl. The G-men had that talent since the SB victory but have done absolutely nothing since then. Yes, 10 wins last year is a nice number but without even a wildcard qualification, it meant nothing. I think they still have the talent to win it all this year but for how much longer. When do you think the window closes on the Giants and do you agree big changes are necessary if they fail to make the playoffs (and advance) despite the number of wins they have?
Ohm (2:19 PM)
Mark Schlereth just picked the Giants to win the NFC East on SportsCenter today... I think the window is still there because the QB is 30 years old, Nicks, Smith and Manningham are still very young and Bradshaw and Jacobs are also still effective and somewhat young. Defensively, Osi and Tuck are in their prime and probably will be great for another two-three years. I would say the Giants window is open for another couple of years at least. But they got to keep adding on. If they fail to make the postseason this coming year though for a third straight year, could be a new head coach running the ship.
Tim (New Haven, CT)
My man Ohm! If Antonio Cromartie becomes a free agent, do you see the Giants making an effort to sign him? He won?t be cheap, but he would be a viable option to help the Giants keep up with the Eagles WRs.
Ohm (2:22 PM)
Wud up Tim? I think the Giants could use Cro but I don't think he'd be a great fit personality-wise... I mean, seriously, Antrel Rolle creates a stir each time he suggests Coughlin could loosen up. What would Cromartie say going from Rex to Coughlin? I rather spend the money on Asomugha if possible. Cromartie's talents are great. But if the Jets aren't making him a serious priority to re-sign, that kind of raises a red flag a bit to me. Great talent but he might be a bit much to handle for the Giants. And I say that saying I love Cromartie and how outspoken he is but I don't know if that is a good fit with the Giants.
Vince McMahon (Stamford, CT)
We should have a wrestling match between Peter King and Jason Whitlock. Who do you favor to win!?
Ohm (2:24 PM)
Vince, I am just glad you brought the Rock back. I LOVE THE ROCK, the most electrifying man in entertainment! May have to watch Wrestlemania for the first time in years now.
Hey Ohm the draft is comimg up and also the free agency what do you think the Jets and Giants will do in these two areas.what do these teams need is what I want to know. Thanks
Ohm (2:28 PM)
Richard, I am with the Giants full time but I'll try my best to tell you what you need to know... LOL. The Giants need, in no particular order, CB, OL, LB, TE, S, RB and serious speed and a playmaker. The Giants need as many playmakers as possible. Speed will be huge to match up with the Eagles' speed. They need more athletes on special teams. Need to add depth and youth on offensive line. Another running back would give them insurance. The Giants need to take a bunch of players that will help cover them in case there is a lockout and who knows what will happen with free agency. Linebacker is a big need as well. As for the Jets, I think they need to re-sign Santonio and try to keep Braylon, David Harris is a must-keep and they will bring him back in my mind, and then I can see them going after Asomugha. Would love to see the Giants go after Asomugha as well. Think the Jets can use some help at linebacker and they need a pass rusher.
Bill (Long Beach)
Good afternoon Ohm. Lookout! There's a lockout stormfront heading right for us!! The clouds won't clear until mid September! 18 game season you say?! 2011 I forsee a 12 game season, due to the late(lockout)start. What say you?
Ohm (2:29 PM)
Bill, just a guess... but I think the lockout could affect camp but I still find it hard to see the lockout going into the season. Just have a feeling they will settle it before then.
prince charles (buckingham palace)
are there any free agent LB's the giants might make a play for
Ohm (2:29 PM)
Prince Charles... hard to know right now because of the CBA... don't know who will be restricted and unrestricted and what not... you know?
Ohm, was Will Beatty released or something? why are all these "experts" mocking OT's to the Giants in the 1st round? The fact is if you are going to draft an OT, you take Carimi b/c he's versatile and can play G and RT. McKenzie won't be here forever...
Ohm (2:31 PM)
Well, I guess maybe they don't think Will can get the job done. Personally, I think the jury is still out on Will. He needs another year maybe to keep learning and improving. And with Andrews' back an issue and Diehl able to move to G, seems like the experts want the Giants to take a LT. My thing is, I am not so sure that you can get a LT at 19 that is going to come in and start right away over Andrews, Beatty or Diehl. I do think you can grab one for depth and one to start in the next two years or so because you are right, Kareem turns 32 in the spring.
what can the Giants do to upgrade their LB core?
Ohm (2:32 PM)
Tommy... draft one in the first two-three rounds and see who is out there in free agency as well. We'll have to see who will be available...
OHM YOU DA MAN!!!! Any free agents you think the Giants will pursue Nnamdi Asomugha, Barrett Ruud, or a WR?
Ohm (2:34 PM)
No Eddie... YOU DA MAN. I would love to see the Giants get on the Asomugha bandwagon. Not sure if they will shell out the big money a second straight year for a secondary player like they did with Rolle last year. But I think they could really really use him. As for the rest of free agency... Jerry Reese says he is going to wait to see how the new CBA shakes out before focusing on what to do with free agency. But I do think Reese will add more to the defense and identify LB and DB as two areas to improve. Also have to figure out what will happen with Cofield at DT and probably add another safety as well. Grant will be a free agent.
Bill (Long Beach)
I see the Giants going O-line, linebacker and runningback in this years draft. The get a running back in the mid-rounds, who is fast and can catch; pair him with Bradshaw, who they resign - - cut "Potty-mouth" Jacobs.
Ohm (2:36 PM)
I can see that... I'd really like to see them grab a serious speed guy in the first three rounds whether it be a corner or running back like a McCluster-type. They need some serious speed on special teams and defense. As for Bradshaw, I think they will re-sign him and I guess we will have to see if they do draft a running back... if they take one high... they may have to take a hard look at Jacobs. But for now, I can see both Jacobs and Bradshaw back for another year. It worked well at times this past season.
Joe (Las Vegas)
I know that Eli is supposed to be in his prime, but I wonder how stable he isgoing to be. Do you think he will play better or are we going to have more of good Eli, bad Eli? Who will be his back up?
Ohm (2:37 PM)
I think you should hope for more good Eli than bad Eli... I think you will still have both but I think it is possible to have good Eli for 80% or more of the time than the bad one... I think Eli will cut down on the interceptions and come close to matching his other numbers if not matching them. As for his backup, I think it will be Sage again.
Could you see Reese trading up for a player like Patrick Peterson? This would help fix two of our biggest problems from this year (playmaking on defense and in the return game) and considering the depth we already have on the team, would not be a bad play. I wouldn't mind trading quantity for quality every once in a while.
Ohm (2:39 PM)
Scottie... I hear you man and like where your head is at! But PP is going in like the top five in most mock drafts. That's a serious price to pay for the Giants to move up that high. And unless he is a sure bet, I wouldn't pay that much to move into the top five. Remember how much the Jets gave up to get Sanchez? This draft might cost even more because it could be a pivotal draft with so much uncertainty surrounding lockout.
Should the Giants use their first round pick to draft an OT who might not start this year or use the first round pick on starter i.e. a wideout who can return kick/punts?
Ohm (2:41 PM)
Joe... I would love to see them take somebody who can have an impact this season and an OT might not have an impact because they have veterans who will likely start ahead of a rookie. But you have to keep an eye on the future as well, not just this year. And as for a wideout who can return, you basically would be taking a receiver just to return because they are loaded at receiver. I think this draft might be thin for DBs as far as first-round talent so that cuts out a DB who can return as well. I think if Giants keep their pick, they need to go with best player on their board no matter what position he plays. Just get talent, hopefully athleticism and speed. If there is a linebacker who they like, all the more better. But if not, don't force it and take a linebacker just because you need one. If the offensive linemen are the best on the board and helps fill a need, take one there.
Big O from BK (Brooklyn)
Wassup Ohm. Any chance the G-Men go after Nnamdi if and when free agency commences? From looking at the two SB particpants, the one thing that stood out to me was the number of impact players on the defensive side of the ball. When I look at my G-Men, we can use another player or two of that caliber. Thoughts?
Ohm (2:42 PM)
Big O... would love to see them get Nnamdi. He would be great checking DeSean and Miles Austin and what not. But he will come at a very high price. Very expensive. I do think Jerry will continue to add to the defense. They have playmakers but need more in the secondary and at linebacker. And I think Reese will continue to add to that. Would love to see the Giants add more SPEED.
Hey Ohm, I feel with the current platoon of O-lineman that they don't have to address OL early in the draft. So if they aren't taking one early out of the LB, RB, and TE possible draft picks, what position do you think would have a greater impact for the team.
Ohm (2:46 PM)
Luke, the offensive line was terrific this season, probably the offense's MVP really considering how it managed through all the injuries. But the line is not getting any younger and three key guys are coming off surgeries in O'Hara, Seubert and Koets. So, with a lockout looming, the Giants need to protect themselves since who knows what could happen in free agency and who knows what will happen with how players recover from injuries. What if Andrews' back is still a problem too? If this draft has a ton of off. linemen worthy of going in the first round, then the Giants got to consider that. If you were to just go by position, what they need most, I would say linebacker is a bigger need. But the Giants should take best player available combined with need than just going for need only... look at last year, they took JPP when they needed a linebacker. And JPP turned out to be great. If Mark Ingram were to slip to 19 though, that would be hard to turn down in my mind because while he doesn't have blazing speed, I think he is going to be a player. Even with Bradshaw and Jacobs, personally, I'd have to take a look at Ingram if he were there.
John (Long Island)
What position do you think the Giants will most likely address in the first round? Personally I hope they draft a strong offensive Tackle to replace McKenzie when his contract is up. Also, who do you like more, Solder, Costanzo, or Tyron Smith?
Ohm (2:48 PM)
Kind of answered that earlier but as far as who they would take at OT... don't really know. Kyper's latest mock says Solder. McShay's latest says Smith.
Who would you choose if you could only keep one, Jacobs or Bradshaw?
Ohm (2:49 PM)
Joe... Bradshaw. Bigger upside... younger, speedy. Love Jacobs but if I had to take one, it would be Bradshaw. In his first season as the #1 back, Bradshaw had 1200 yards. If he limits the fumbles, which I think he will, Bradshaw should continue to climb if he can stay healthy.
john (white plains)
how much of a pay cut do u think jacobs will have and how much of a raise will bradshaw get and % of gmen getting both back?
Ohm (2:50 PM)
John, hard to answer not knowing what the CBA will be. Who knows if Jacobs has to take a paycut or will take a paycut. As for Bradshaw, he probably will want to earn in the same neighborhood as Jacobs, who will make slightly less than 5 million per.
Assuming the new CBA gets in place before the upcoming season, which of the Giants free agents do you think they will re-sign? What do you think the odds are that the Giants bring Burress back?
Ohm (2:53 PM)
I think the Giants will try to bring back, in no particular order, Bradshaw, Kiwanuka, Smith, Boss, Cofield as far as the big names go. There are plenty of others, like Blackburn and Boothe, that I think they will also try to bring back. But if Boss and Cofield get bigger deals elsewhere, they could bolt. As for Plax, my guess is the odds are slim. Just wonder whether ownership and management will want him back. But who knows? What if Smith's recovery doesn't go as planned and what if the lockout cuts into training camp and Smith isn't close to ready to play in the first month of the season... Plax knows the system already. But like I said before, I wonder if Coughlin would want to go through all that would come with bringing Plax back.
Will there still be a draft if there isn't a new CBA at the time?
Ohm (2:53 PM)
Yes... draft goes on no matter what happens with CBA.
Bill (Long Beach)
Tim from New Haven maybe on to something re: Cromartie. Cro has one thing in common with the late, great Well Mara. They both sired many children -- granted Well did it with one person; his lovely bride. Cro? With half of Cali! If anyone can appreciate a large family it's the Mara's!
Ohm (2:54 PM)
Haha... well, I don't know if I would ever equate Giants ownership with Cromartie... Love Cro but Giants ownership oozes class.
Looking at current mock drafts...Taking an OT that is a year away in first round currently seems like a waste. What are your thoughts on Akeem OLB from UCLA?
Ohm (2:56 PM)
Need to do more research on Akeem but have heard good things about him. But youth, depth and a future stud OT is never a bad thing to take. I hear you, you want somebody to contribute now. But what if the kid panned out to be your starting tackle for the next 10 years starting next season... hard to pass up. As Jerry Reese says, tackles are very very difficult to find.
How high do you think carolina will be seeded in the tornument
Ohm (2:56 PM)
Alex, you have to forgive me but when it comes to college basketball, I have been obsessed and only concerned with one thing -- getting my Spartans in the tournament. LOL.
Do you think Bradshaw will stay with the Giants??
Ohm (2:57 PM)
Vincent, my bet would be yes, Bradshaw stays and re-signs with the Giants.
Ohm (2:57 PM)
Alright guys, thanks for all the questions and please leave a comment in my most recent blog entry on who you think the Giants should draft... good healthy debate happened during the first mock draft a few weeks ago.
