Wallace Matthews (1:54 PM)
Good afternoon, Yankee people. All is right with the Yankosphere again after last night's 6-2 win over the Rays, right? and I'm sure your questions will reflect the happiness and optimism you no doubt are feeling today after that season-changing victory. Can;t wait to hear the. We'll get started in exactly four minutes
Wallace Matthews (2:08 PM)
Sorry about the delay. had to take an Important Yankee Phone Call. No, can;t tell you what it was about. Sorry. let's get started
Rich (Yank fan driving to Utah)
Will the Yankees trade Jorge Posada or will the keep him as full time DH / part time catcher?
Wallace Matthews (2:10 PM)
I doubt you can trade a 39-year-old guy with a 413M pricetag. I think the Yankees will muddle through with him as a platoon DH, vs. righties only, and if that doesn;t work, I'm sure his name will ed up n the waiver wire. This one is very unlikely to end well
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who will be the First Yankees Pitcher to Hit this season when the Yankees travel to Wrigley Field June 17-19?
Wallace Matthews (2:12 PM)
well. lets figure out the rotation: according to my crude calculations, based on a once every five-day rotation and assuming no injuries or rainouts, Ill say it will be Big Bartolo starting that game, assuming he's still in the rotation, and still in th eballgame by the time his first AB comes around
Do you think Girardi should have waited for a Tuesday in Tampa to drop Posada to 9th, rather than a Saturday in NY on national TV versus the Red Sox? His choice would seem to have raised the stakes for everyone.
Wallace Matthews (2:14 PM)
Mark, I think Girardi does what he believes s right for the team, not what will make th emost positive impact in the media. The real question is, if Girardi thought Posada was a No. 9 hitter on saturday, how did he become a No. 7 hitter on Tuesday? The easy answer is that Nick swisher was unavailable and there was no way he was batting Jorge behind Chris Dickerson. But he still could have batted him eighth, behind Brett Gardner. a clear act of appeasement by the manager
why don't the team let him catch 1 game or 2 to see if that may get his head right
Wallace Matthews (2:15 PM)
I assume you mean posada, and the simple answer is this: Girardi hates him as a catcher. Period
BrandonL (Akron OH)
Hey Wall-E it's great to have you back!! Thank God the losing streak is finally OVER...as well as the Posada Soap Opera! With Swisher struggling how long do you think he has with the Yankees? Thanks
Wallace Matthews (2:16 PM)
well, he's got to the end of the season at east, but if he doesn;t pick it up soon, no further than that. No way the yankees will pick up his option the way he's hitting now
Has their been any talk about bringing Manny B up in the summer to be the LRP?
Wallace Matthews (2:17 PM)
none at all. in fact, quite the opposite. But as I'm sure you;ve noticed, things are subject to change here, drastically and in a big hurry, if circumstances get desperate enough
Why did the Yankees call up Dickerson? With all their offensive struggles lately, you would think they would call up Jorge Vazquez who tore it up in spring and has 16 HRs so far in AAA. And if defense was the issue, at least call up Justin Maxwell, who can play the outfield and has hit a bunch of HRs in Scranton.
Wallace Matthews (2:18 PM)
excellent question. I asked Girardi that yesterday and his answer was some vague business about Dickerson providing more "options and flexibility." I also asked him, why not a pitcher for a pitcher, and he said, well, we've still got 12 pitchers on the roster, which is funny from a guy who the night before was complaining about having a "short" bullpen. see what I have to put up with every day?
Matt (Bk, NY)
Hey Wally do you honestly see the bombers making the playoff with there current ball club?
Wallace Matthews (2:20 PM)
I think they certainly are in the thick of a three-way race although I beleive the days of assuming the WC automatically comes out of the AL East would be foolish this year. Certainly, they need some help, in the bullpen immediately, and at some point, they'll need a starting pitcher and another bat either in the OF or at DH. But until proven otherwise, I must assume Yankee mgmt wil do what is necessary to remain competitive, simply because it always has
Any chance the yanks become sellers if that start freefalling by the deadline?
Wallace Matthews (2:22 PM)
No. The yankees simply cannot afford to give up the illusion they are always in the race. if they did, those 5,000 empty seats a night could wuickly become 25,000, at the prices they charge. They will be buyers under any circumstances
Hi Wally,Will either of the 3 B's be up this year and if so, which has the best upside? Also, will Jeter turn it around? Thanks
Wallace Matthews (2:24 PM)
In my gut I don;t think so because the Yankees are so committed to protecting, and sometimes overprotecting, theit yong pitchers. I would have to think Banuelos has the most upside because he's a lefty and is the hardest thrower of the three. Cashman thinks he is a potential top-of-the-rotation guy, the others more like No. 2 or 3s. As for Jeter, I thought he was on the way to turning it around after his big game in texas. since then, he is something like 5-for-34. So who knows? what you see may be what you get
I know you from boxing writing days. You wrote during the greatest era when Ali, Holmes, Leonard, Duran, Hagler all were in big time fights. Did you like doing that more then writing on baseball? How did it differ?
Wallace Matthews (2:26 PM)
Hey, Mitchell. I loved doing boxing, esp, because of the guys I covered, and at the time I would not have traded my job for any other beat in sports. In fact, I turned down chances to cover the Mets and the football Giants because in the 80s, boxing was the place to be for me. But now, with the fight game so diminished, I'd rather stay where I am. Baseball was always my second love behind boxing, and covering the yankees is sort of like covering Tyson again, except now they fight every night
Michael C. (Westport, CT)
Who can blame Cashman for seething? He was forced to sign Soriano, A-Rod, Jeter and Posada for more years and money than he thought logical, and is now watching them all fade amidst controversy. Your thoughts?
Wallace Matthews (2:27 PM)
I don't blame him at all. I also wouldn;t blame him for gloating. In every one of the cases you mention, the GM's stance, considered hardline at the time, turns out to be exactly right. I wrote a column about this on Saturday when the Posada mess broke. It's stil on the website if you want to check it out
Mark T. (first base)
Am I next on the list to go downhill with multiple years and millions left on my deal?
Wallace Matthews (2:28 PM)
Don't worry, I'm sure your replacement parts are readily available for your model of automaton, the MT25. You'll be fine
When, not if, CC opts out after this season, will Hank or Cashman do the negotiating? I'm thinking 9 years $270 mil. Sound right?
Wallace Matthews (2:29 PM)
if he opts out, Cashman will not do the negotiating, just like he said he wouldn;t, and didnt, with A-Rod. Most likely it will be the soft underbelly of the Yankee organization, Scott Boras' favorite fish, Pres. Randy Levine
Jo Jo B (NYC)
Have you heard anything about new Hal & Hank statues to flank George's monument?
Wallace Matthews (2:30 PM)
Yes. George will be poking Hank in the eye while smashing Hal over the head with a frying pan
Steve (Boston, MA)
Wally, if a meteor hit the Yankees pitching staff and all were incapable of pitching except for Joba, would he get a shot at the rotation before or after Kei Igawa?
Wallace Matthews (2:31 PM)
that would have to be some-size meteor to take out Colon, don;t you think? Like the size of Mars
I'd like to recommend a ban on all questions concerning Sheffield returning to the yankees. Please Joe in Argentina, give up!
Wallace Matthews (2:31 PM)
I'm thinking Sheff might be coming back to replace Posada at DH (NOT!)
Steve (Boston, MA)
Wally, when everything comes full circle on Posada?s situation, we?re going to be able to pin the blame on A-Rod right? Nothing happens in that clubhouse without that prima donna being involved.
Wallace Matthews (2:32 PM)
absolutely. Alex was seen telling Jorge, don;t let this guy do to you what Torre did to me. (Only kidding!)
With Soriano on the DL and the Yanks finally winning can we assume the curse of That Guy is over?
Wallace Matthews (2:33 PM)
Oh, no. I;m sure That Guy will be back. Dr. Felix Lopez guarantees it
Mark B (Burlington, VT)
What are your thoughts on AJ? It seems like Russell Martin has been a great influence as his catcher. But is AJ just too much of a head case?!
Wallace Matthews (2:34 PM)
Sorry, but I think AJ is the same guy he was last yea and the year before that and the year before that and . . . extremely talented but a self-sabotaging whack job. and trust me, I like the guy a lot. i just can;t figure him out and neither can anyone else
Does it seem like Girardi is in over his head managing this team? I wonder if he regrets not pursuing the Cubs job
Wallace Matthews (2:35 PM)
Mark, I think the past week has been a rude awakening for a guy who likes everything to go smoothly and seems to have forgoten that around here, 2009 and 2010 were exceptions, not the rule. still, I wouldn;t say over his head. Just ill-equipped for certain aspects of this job in this town
Wallace Matthews (2:36 PM)
Thanks, guys. It was a blast as alwas. we'll do it again next Wednesday, time TBA. See ya
