Katie Strang (2:00 PM)
Hey everyone! Here to answer your questions today from the frozen tundra that is Nassau Coliseum. Bundled up in my Michelin Man coat and ready to go. Fire away!
Isles Goalie issues are bizzare. Any word on the recovery for Montoya or DP? Why is Poulin called up to sit on the becnh when he is so hot? Nabokov to Detroit seems a perfict fit.
Katie Strang (2:02 PM)
Ahhh, how timely. Thanks Johnny. Now I feel better for coming out to the team's 25-minute practice session today. Al Montoya looked pretty sharp and told me he was feeling really good. Coach Jack Capuano said he's "day to day" but essentially ruled him out for tomorrow. So I'm guessing that means Kevin Poulin, who was recently named AHL player of the week after three straight shutouts.
Hockey fans don't like watching the finesse Red Wings play, and now they are going to be in the Winter Classic? Against a Canadian team? Has the WC jumped the shark?
Katie Strang (2:05 PM)
Papa Strang would disagree with you Lane. He enjoys watching them very much. I understand the gripe, however, coming from a NY fan but let's not get greedy. Face it: the Red Wings have been one of the most dominant, well-run, tradition-rich franchises over the past two decades. They deserve a Winter Classic. Interested to see how it goes with a Canadian team involved, as the rumor has the Maple Leafs slated against the Wings. Having covered my first WC recently I can tell you it has NOT jumped the shark. By far and away my favorite sporting event to cover, ever.
Sanyi (Long Island)
How do you feel about the drama in montreal? was it fair out ofanger to make a trade?
Katie Strang (2:09 PM)
Well, to be very frank I was pretty disgusted with the move to fire assistant coach Perry Pearn earlier this season. Absolutely gutless. The team is in a tailspin so you send a message by using an assistant as a scapegoat? Shameful. As for the Cammalleri trade, depends on why you think he was traded. If it was for speaking out, that's pretty ridiculous. Absolutely insane the way it went down last night -- he was pulled from the game and sent to the team hotel told to "await further instructions " -- but maybe nothing should surprise us anymore with the way this MTL season is going.
Ottawa's first shutout this season comes against...the Rangers??
Katie Strang (2:10 PM)
Good Lord, did you see Craig Anderson? He was fantastic. Very reminiscent of Mike Smith for Phoenix the other night. Not so surprising that it was the Rangers. Their compete level is high and their resilience is borderline remarkable, but they are not a juggernaut by any means. Fourth shutout of the season
Joe LoMonaco (Long Island, NY)
Any word if the league (Shanahan) is looking into disciplinary action against Staios for his wallop on Maxime Talbot last night?
Katie Strang (2:11 PM)
They are not. Talked to someone today with knowledge of the situation and no discipline is expected. Also spoke with Staios and he said he was surprised the referees even conferred after the play. Said he is absolutely positive he did not hit him in the head
What more have you heard about the Devils financial mess? There was a new report out today Bettman put out a deadline to their ownership. Do you see them having to relocate?
Katie Strang (2:12 PM)
To be absolutely honest, anything to do with money/finances/math is way above my head, but there have been too many reports to believe the Devils are not ensnared in a pretty dire situation. No on relocation, but I imagine there will be some ownership issues in the near future.
MARK (Roxbury, NJ)
Any truth to these Rick DiPietro retirement rumors?
Katie Strang (2:14 PM)
Have said it before and I will say it again. There is no reason for him to walk away and leave money on the table. Only way I see his tenure with the team severed is if either a) he is declared medically ineligible or b) the next CBA provides a one-time buyout agreement that allows each team to clear a contract.
Rumor has it the Rangers are in the market for a top-six forward that can score and/or an offensive d-man (presumably to run the power play). Any thoughts as to who they may target (other than Weber or Suter)?
Katie Strang (2:16 PM)
They will likely keep a close eye on both those Predators, but I'd keep an eye on defenseman Tim Gleason as well. His name has been bandied about recently and that will only increase as the deadline nears. If the Rangers are in on him, they won't be the only team. Not sure if you saw this, but my ESPN colleague Pierre LeBrun talked to Don Maloney this week, who emphatically ruled out any Shane Doan trade rumors. Sorry to burst that bubble
Derek (New Windsor)
Why no all-Star talk or consideration for Matt Moulson from anyone??
Katie Strang (2:17 PM)
No doubt Matt Moulson has All-Star numbers. He deserves consideration and I'm sure he got it. But you can't justify sending two players from a team in 14th place in the East
Will the Devils re-sign Parise before July 1st or will he leave
Katie Strang (2:18 PM)
Matt I wrestle with this one all the time. And I guess the conclusion I've come to is that it's too early to tell. I think the team's performance down the stretch will have a significant impact. If Parise believes he can win in New Jersey, that helps the Devils cause. I do not see Lou Lamoriello trying to move him at the deadline, either. I'd be shocked.
Kevin (Northern NJ)
How do see Marc Staal's progress? Do you think he'll be at 100% by the end of the season?
Katie Strang (2:20 PM)
Has been steadily progressing recently. Taken pretty big steps last two games, in my opinion. Was robbed of his first goal by Anderson last night. What has been a huge luxury for the Rangers is that they can ease him back in without thrusting him into top D pairing right away. Testament to how well the rest of the unit has played without him
What do you like to eat?
Katie Strang (2:21 PM)
Just had Chipotle for the first time in months and it was better than I even remembered
John Millan (Central New Jersey)
With the rumors that the Islanders are hosting a pre-season game in Brooklyn next fall, whats the chances of them becoming a full time tenant or is it more of Wang trying to "play his hand" with the town of Hempstead like he's done with our Kansas City appearances in the past?
Katie Strang (2:23 PM)
Could be, but the time for cat-and-mouse games is pretty much over. Realistically, the Islanders need a shovel in the ground this summer to have a building complete by the time the lease expires in 2015. I think Barclays Center is most viable option at this point. Biggest concern is the capacity. Would be league's smallest at 14,500.
If Ryan once again becomes available, is he an option for the Rangers? What about Gezlaf if he is put on the market?
Katie Strang (2:25 PM)
Yes, interest would be there for both but to get either the Rangers have to be prepared to give some significant pieces back. Also have to consider the cap implications, which will make any big deal impossible for them to maneuver without shedding some salary as well
Why is Nino on the Isles team? He plays 5 mins a night. He needs more ice time or should be back in Juniors.
Katie Strang (2:27 PM)
Totally agree with you Chris. I think this is absolutely abhorrent mismanagement of his development. Problem is, he has already played 18 games. That means he has already burned a year of eligibility one his entry-level contract.
Kevin (Northern NJ)
Will Artie Anisimov end up on the 3rd or 4th line, or become an official healthy scratch each game? Sometimes disappears on ice.
Katie Strang (2:28 PM)
Tortorella was pretty critical of him last night, Kevin. Said his game has been steadily declining in recent games. Torts is big on accountability so if AA isn't playing well, he won't see ice time. Expect him to be demoted unless he can pick his game back up
Mike (Sunny Hicksville)
When are the Islanders going to go out in the free agent market and get a superstar to play along Tavares? It's great they have youth but they still are missing veteran stars to make the next step.
Katie Strang (2:30 PM)
When they are in a position to add that type of a piece. Tavares needs that for his development, but don't hold your breath waiting for Snow to add a marquee player this season. Not with team in the cellar of the East.
Katie Strang (2:30 PM)
OK all, that's it for today! Thanks for stopping by...see you next week!
