Chat with Adam Rubin
Welcome to ESPNNewYork.com! On Thursday, New York Mets writer Adam Rubin will stop by to take your baseball questions.
Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
Send your questions now and join Rubin Thursday at noon ET!
Adam Rubin (12:00 PM)
Thanks for joining me. I'm live from Nationals Park in D.C., where Omar Quintanilla -- despite a left index finger injury -- will start at shortstop. Here we go ...
what is the word on tejeda? I miss his defense watching SS
Adam Rubin (12:01 PM)
Tejada pulled himself from Monday's rehab game at Triple-A Buffalo with a recurrence of the right quadriceps issue. He is due to be examined today by team doctors, then head to the Mets' complex in Florida. But when you have a flareup with that muscle after returning to rehab games, that's not good. TC is not counting on Tejada returning anytime soon.
What's the deal with Cedeno? Will he be back any time soon? Haven't heard any updates in a while.
Adam Rubin (12:02 PM)
Cedeno should be in a rehab game Sunday or Monday for the first time, TC said. Light running today. Bases tomorrow. Strained calf.
Max (New York)
Adam, how can the team continue to justify keeping Ike on the roster? He's actually COST us 1.5 wins according to baseball reference. So they say sending him down to AAA won't work, but going 1 for every 20 with the occasional 2 hit game to keep the average above .150 will?
Adam Rubin (12:03 PM)
He is not starting vs. LH pitchers anymore. Five of the past six he has sat. And after the two series in AL parks, Collins hinted, it very well could be Duda at first base. That doesn't necessarily mean demotion, but he'll need to pick it up soon or he won't be playing much.
Stuart (Englewood, NJ)
You see Mets making post season?
Adam Rubin (12:05 PM)
I've been amazed by what the Mets have been able to do, but many people here know I picked them for 71 wins. I'm not feeling playoffs. This is the third series of eight straight against teams with winning records. Lost two of three to Phillies. Won three of four from St. Louis. Now down 0-2 to Nats. Talk to me at the end of this stretch, after two series vs. Yankees, plus Rays, Orioles, Reds and we can reassess.
hey adam, what are your thoughts on jeremy hefner? i think he has done well, he has just been on the wrong end of some bad luck. will we continue to see him in the rotation?
Adam Rubin (12:06 PM)
Definitely serviceable as an up-and-down guy who you can use if you need to temporarily plug a rotation hole. He's out of the rotation now -- with Young back and the Mets not needing the extra starter now that Johan is recovered from the no-hitter. The question is does he stay in the bullpen? Or is he demoted when Young is back from the paternity leave Saturday? The decision very likely is tied to whether Jon Rauch (elbow) lands on the DL this weekend.
When you tweeted 6 outs away from frist place on Tuesday, you know it's never that easy right? Always appreciate your work
Adam Rubin (12:07 PM)
And 48 hours later they're in fourth place. Unbelievable. Tight division. Thanks.
How is Johan feeling? No problems after throwing 130+ stress pitches?
Adam Rubin (12:08 PM)
Terry said Johan's bullpen session Tuesday went "outstanding," and Johan gave a thumbs up as well. He's not throwing 134 pitches Friday vs. the Yankees, but TC said "normal outing" as opposed to a tight pitch count. Johan will be pitching with two extra days of rest.
Do you have any word on when St Lucie top prospects will be moved to Double A (Flores, Vaughan, etc). Also do you see the Mets trying to acquire a utility infielder due to all of the players on the DL.
Adam Rubin (12:10 PM)
Terry said today that the shortstop, Wilfredo Tovar, is imminently due to be promoted to Binghamton. Not sure precise timing on Flores. He obviously merits it. But the complication is that Jefry Marte, another prospects, plays 3B with the B-Mets. So they're going to have to come up with some type of rotation between 3B/2B/1B/DH involving Reese Havens, too. As for Cory Vaughn, his average is in the .230s, despite the homers. So,intuitively, can't imagine there's much of a rush for a promotion.
Jeffrey (Whitestone, NY)
What is so special about John Rauch that the Mets are willing to play one pitcher short, which helped cost them the game Tuesday night?
Adam Rubin (12:11 PM)
Once you put him on the DL, you're committing to losing him for 15 days. And while fans may be down on him, he's definitely a more valuable piece to have than the alternative, which right now would be Hefner.
What is the plan for Hefner? The kid isn't bad. Does he go back to the minors or does he go to the bullpen? I am hoping the bullpen
Adam Rubin (12:12 PM)
TC said Elvin Ramirez is staying in the major league bullpen. Presuming that's true, when Young is activated from paternity leave Friday, there's really no other viable option to send down to Triple-A unless Jon Rauch lands on the DL. Hefner in Triple-A rotation rather than major league bullpen wouldn't be worst thing for organization. That means he's ready to step into the rotation again if required.
Dave Lichtstein (NYC)
Why is Wilmer Flores playing 3b? Does this have anything to do with potentially losing Wright?
Adam Rubin (12:15 PM)
Zero to do with losing Wright. It's the same as people ask me why draft a 3B if you have Wright? You have six minor league levels or so. You prepare players in the event you need them. Say Wright had an injury and missed two months, you'd want Flores ready. And if Flores flourishes and is blocked, then you change positions or trade. Duda is playing right field even though he's a natural first baseman.
Adam Rubin (12:15 PM)
Jason Bay scratched with flu. Excuse me for a sec while I update blog.
Adam Rubin (12:16 PM)
And I'm back. Sorry.
Do you think Egbert or Satin clear waivers? Also, if another team claims a waived player, they must add them to their 40 man?
Adam Rubin (12:18 PM)
Egbert verdict should be in hour or so, if I've got my days straight. I imagine both do. I was surprised by Schwinden getting claimed. (And claimed a second time by Indians.)
Why did they bother activating Bay yesterday if they knew he was still sick?
Adam Rubin (12:19 PM)
I guess they didn't think this sick. Even though Bay didn't start Wednesday, they wanted his bat for the bench with the four lefties in the Nats' pen. And, logistically, the Josh Satin DFA had to be timed with Pedro Beato's activation, since Beato needed Satin's 40-man roster spot. With Chris Young going on paternity leave Wednesday, you might as well have activated Bay then.
Is Mike Nickeas the most logical person to go if we need to clear a spot on the 40 man roster?
Adam Rubin (12:20 PM)
Can you remember a year in which the Mets had such a 40-man roster crunch? Is it just injuries that are making it a bigger issue this year, or does it have to do with the talent level at the ML level?
Adam Rubin (12:21 PM)
When you add seven prospects during an offseason to protect them from the 40-man roster, you better choose carefully. Because it affects maneuverability in situations like this.
Evan (Lakeland, Fla. )
If the Mets are in the heat of a WC hunt down the stretch, how do you think Alderson will use Harvey, Familia, and maybe even Wheeler down the stretch?
Adam Rubin (12:22 PM)
They have very publicly and repeatedly stated the use of Harvey, Familia and Wheeler is independent of the major league team's needs. Mejia is a different story, and should be in the major league bullpen within a few weeks. Wheeler is not going to be in majors this season. He'll finish the season in Triple-A undoubtedly. Could Harvey or Familia contribute in the major league rotation down the stretch? I suppose so. But that's on their schedule.
Who has the best career #'s against Wang, Frustrating to lose to the Nats because of errors
Adam Rubin (12:23 PM)
Here's our Mets-Nats series preview: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/47604/series-preview-mets-at-nationals-6 If you click Wang's name, it will give you his career numbers vs. Mets batters.
Adam,What do you think of the Mets draft picks? I have read about their first and supplemental picks but was curious about the others.
Adam Rubin (12:24 PM)
I really don't study the amateur players pre-draft, so I'll defer to the Mets' wisdom.
Has anyone bought up the idea of batting Ike Davis second to get him more fastballs in front of David Wright? Joe Torre always batted slumping players in the two hole, and it usually worked for some reason.
Adam Rubin (12:26 PM)
Had not heard it broached. Not sure you want a guy with that OBP getting more ABs. Your point about fastballs is well-taken. But, you know what, without Reyes in the leadoff spot anymore, how many fastballs are they getting? The fastballs are born of a steal threat atop the lineup. I don't have time to do this now, but it would be interesting to research whether the No. 2 hitter for the Mets is getting fewer fastballs now than a season ago.
Matt (Cromwell, CT)
I just saw the movie "Moneyball" this weekend. My first thought after watching the 'formula' explained was thinking about the Mets. They have ONE semi-superstar (Wright) but the Mets appear to be designed in "Moneyball" fashion. They value taking alot of pitches, getting on base and getting timely hitting. What are your thoughts?
Adam Rubin (12:28 PM)
The reputation of the A's was they always took college players in the draft. Yet, I believe, they finally snapped a string of five straight years taking HS players with their first pick this season. Mets are Moneyball though. OBP, etc. The draftee from Purdue who never strikes out is their type of player. As for the movie, primary thought is how unfairly Art Howe was portrayed relative to his actual personality.
Is Gavin Cecchini the Mets future SS or 2B? I think with the young Tejada doing very well at SS, Cecchini is the Mets future 2b. That would be a nice very good defensive infield with Davis Cecchini Tejada and Wright (hopefully). The Mets sure do need better defense.
Adam Rubin (12:29 PM)
Ask me in four years. It's a wasted exercise now, frankly. A year ago the questions were about Brandon Nimmo. So you can ask in three years about him.
Adam, have you read the NY Times piece today about Valley Fever and Ike Davis and do you think this is the cause of Ike's problems?
Adam Rubin (12:30 PM)
I believe it was the Daily News, no? They have stated emphatically that it's a non-issue. Would it shock me if he was concealing something? Nothing would shock me. But TC is a straight shooter and he said he is unaware of any issue.
Any comment on the last names of today's starting pitchers?
Adam Rubin (12:30 PM)
Did Collins offer any reasoning behind his odd decision-making Tuesday night? Double-switching Duda out in the 6th or 7th, leaving Valdespin in to play short, holding Parnell for the 10th, etc? For whatever he brings leadership-wise, his in-game management has left something to be desired.
Adam Rubin (12:32 PM)
So much happened, I didn't ask about the Duda removal on double-switch. Regarding Valdepsin, he said the situation earlier called to pinch-hit for Quintanilla, and he didn't hesitate to do so. His point on Parnell was that he had a five-man pen. And if he used Byrdak and Parnell in the same inning and then Francisco blows save and there are extra innings, he's got no arm left besides Hefner, whom he needed for Wednesday's start.
Should the Mets look at trading Murphy? He's changed his approach to the point where he hits for virtually no power and the bat only plays at second, but it's painfully apparent that the glove never will.
Adam Rubin (12:33 PM)
Trade a guy who is not good defensively, and who is not hitting for any power? I think the better play is to try to get what you can out of him and hope things improve (which they will).
john (New york)
is the mets financial situation as bad as everyone thinks? I personally think that the mets will try to make a big splash in the off-season wtehr via trade or free agency.
Adam Rubin (12:34 PM)
The lawsuit cloud is behind them, but there are still serious cash-flow issues, even with the new minority investors, given the magnitude of recurring debt payments (such as interest on the stadium bonds). I don't know if they've been able to refinance their major loans that are due in 2014 yet, but I do not expect wild spending for the next couple of offseasons, until Bay and Johan (at least at this pay level) are off the books.
So with J. Bay back, they have 5 guys in the OF that all want playing time. who are the main starting 3? Jay Bay, Hairston, Duda, Captain Kirk, torres
Adam Rubin (12:36 PM)
There's no urgency for a week, because they'll have the DH at Yankee Stadium and at Tampa. After that is when it gets interesting, and is why the Lucas Duda to 1B has to be in play.
Adam Rubin (12:36 PM)
Anyway, thanks for joining me. Appreciate the number of questions -- and good ones.
