Ohm (3:00 PM)
Hey guys! What's up?
What up Big Ohm, How do u feel about Rueben Randle? With all the attention to Nicks and Cruz he will have some good oppurtunities to have some big plays, ur thoughts?
Ohm (3:01 PM)
Hey D... that is certainly the hope. I think he still has to learn the offense and get used to the pro game where he is comfortable enough to react more and think less. But the hope is certainly that he could be a deep threat or big target across the middle eventually. I think Hixon will get first crack at third WR but you will see Rueben sprinkled in there.
Ohm (3:02 PM)
Beat you guys at the best junior recruit in the state... have fun watching him play for State in basketball and football.
John(Cranbury, NJ) [via mobile]
What's the word, Ohm? Not sure if you're all that familiar with fellow chatter Matt Williamson, but yesterday he stated he wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the season Nicks and Randle were the top 2 receivers for the Giants and Cruz was just the "slot guy". Ludicrous or conceivable?
Ohm (3:04 PM)
Hey John, I did not see that from Matty. I guess the jury is still out to see if Victor can do it after a magical season last year. We'll have to see how the Giants use Cruz and whether they keep him in slot in three-wide sets. But after seeing the type of chemistry Eli had with Cruz and his ability to make big plays from nothing, I am still sticking with Hakeem and Cruz as the top two wideouts for the Giants. I think I understand where Matt is coming from and Rueben has potential to develop for the Giants. But Cruz has to show me he's a fluke first before I start thinking along those lines.
Wut up Big Ohm, Nicks will b a Beast this year
Ohm (3:05 PM)
I guess that's your answer as well. He should only continue to get better, especially after knowing what it takes to shine on the biggest stage.
Mike (Detroit, Michigan)
Hey ohm, enjoy your work. The giants did not have a lot of salary cap room this off season as we all know, however i find it a little strange that as the Giants who did not have a lot of salary cap room, the Cowboys, Eagles, and Redskins all did who as we all know have been notorious big spenders in the off season trying to win the super bowl then and all the headlines. Giants did not spend a lot of money last couple years, last time was the off season that brought Canty, Boley, and Bernand. How is this possible, I smell conspiracy ?
Ohm (3:07 PM)
Mike, it is all about how you manage your cap. For example, Redskins spend a lot of money but often times those guys eventually get cut and the amount of the contract advertised isn't always what counts against the cap. The Giants like to develop their guys and keep their own guys. And they pay a lot of their players. Think about the guys who have and still have big deals on the team: Eli, Canty, Rolle, Boley, Webster, etc. Got to remember that a lot of their top guys are making money.
Ohm (3:07 PM)
Goal!!!!!!!!!! Italy 1, Germany 0. In case you are not watching. LOL.
Have you ever written about other sports?
Ohm (3:09 PM)
Hey Alex... yup. A LOT of sports. I covered the NBA for over 10 years. I used to also cover the US Open tennis for the NY Daily News. I've written about baseball, college basketball at the News as well. And in the past, have written about all different sports from NASCAR to rodeo.
Ohm, is pass protection and ball security the biggest issues to stop David Wilson from having a major impact this season? Most RBs make a smooth transition to the NFL.
Ohm (3:10 PM)
Johnny, I think it is pass protection and learning how to react to defenses and different looks, learning the offense. Ball security is also a concern but I would place that after those two. And yes, rookie running backs do have a smooth transition at times with other teams. But on the Giants, the coaching staff sometimes takes a while to warm up to a rookie.
Any idea on on how Terrell Thomas will be this year? Will he be fully recovered or will they bring him along slowly?
Ohm (3:13 PM)
Johnny, hard to tell right now. We haven't seen him do much because he has been taking it light in OTA's and minicamp. It is always hard to say "fully recovered" since it does take guys like half a season sometimes to really get back to their former form. They will bring him along slowly in camp. My own personal guess is you won't see Terrell back to the form pre knee injury until maybe late in the season bsaed on see how other players come back. But Terrell has dealt with this before and knows what it takes and he is as hard a worker as any on the team.
What up Ohm? With Marvin Austin sitting out last year due to injury and his senior year at NC due to suspensions, will he be ready to play meaningful minutes this year?
Ohm (3:14 PM)
Basil, that is the big question with Marvin. Nobody has seen him in a game in over two years. But I think he will spell Canty and Joseph and see some snaps as backup DT. He will share snaps likely with Rocky Bernard. So I don't think he will play a ton early on. But he still could make an impact in limited snaps. But I fully expect if healthy, Canty and Joseph see the bulk of snaps as the starters at DT when the Giants need to big stuffers inside.
Mike (BHam, AL)
What kind of impact do you see from David Wilson this year? Can you mirror Jacobs stats from last year - and remember they were ranked last in rushing.
Ohm (3:16 PM)
Hey Mike, it's hard to tell right now because he technically still has to beat out DJ Ware for the backup RB spot and has to compete against Andre Brown and Da'Rel Scott. I think he is the most explosive of the three and is very quick and shifty. But it may take him a bit to get comfortable and integrated into the offense.
Matthew (Nashville, Tennessee)
Can this offensive line hold up any better this year? If Beatty goes down, do we see one of this years draft picks step in either Mosley or McCants?
Ohm (3:17 PM)
I think it has to be better, at least better than the one that couldn't get the running game going in the first half of the season. Also the line must protect Eli. If Beatty goes down, look for Brewer or Locklear to get a chance at one of the tackle spots. They could move Diehl back to LT in that case and Brewer at right perhaps.
Dick Balzac (New Jersey)
Do the Giants have ANY chance of repeating or is that very unlikely?
Ohm (3:18 PM)
I think the Giants definitely have a chance to repeat. But it will be harder than it was last season. Their schedule is very difficult. And teams like the Niners, Packers should be just as tough and NFC East will be harder with Eagles and Cowboys even hungrier.
Rachel (Hattiesburg )
Ohm! It's almost fantasy football time again. I think I'm going to pick your brain about some tips and strategies. For now I'll start with the Giants. Who are some players to have on your team this year? Thanks!!
Ohm (3:21 PM)
Hi Rachel! It is almost that time. I am so geeked for fantasy season! The Giants you will want will be Nicks and Cruz (you could probably draft them, depending on how many teams in your league and scoring system) anywhere between second and fourth rounds... then Bradshaw might be somewhere between ideally fourth to fifth round. Eli obviously is a top-7 or 8 fantasy QB, probably can grab him in sixth round or later. Rookies... Randle likely to have the most fantasy value but may take a while to get in the swing of things. Wilson could be a handcuff for Bradshaw. At tight end, have to wait it out but Martellus Bennett would have the most fantasy value if he pans out and is used.
Mike P (Herald Square, NYC)
is the Dline going to be fluid all year? Where do you have JPP spending most his time?
Ohm (3:22 PM)
The hope is they are as dominant as they were in the postseason. I expect them to be better vs the run than they were at the start of last season. JPP should only get better. He should start at right DE with Osi coming in for him and then JPP could move to left DE to spell Tuck or move inside with Tuck and Osi on the outside.
Ohmie my homie...I get the whole "we respect him" thing, but Chase Blackburn running with the 1st team? Seriously? When does that bubble burst?
Ohm (3:25 PM)
Sorry, just watched Italy go up 2-0 on Germany. Chase knows the defense as well as anyone. Perry says he basically is an extension of him on the field. But from an athletic standpoint, there are more athletic linebackers and Perry admitted he doesn't know how long Chase will keep the job. Keith Rivers is still learning the system and the Giants will want to see what he can do on the field. I suspect you will see Chase start the game and play some downs vs the run before they sub in other linebackers like Jacquian and maybe Rivers to go with Boley.
who gets more receptions this year - hixon or barden
Ohm (3:26 PM)
Brian... if healthy, gun to my head... Hixon. I just think they trust him a bit more right now but it is still June. We got to see what happens in camp. But I think Hixon.
Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)
Hey Ohm, I enjoy your work. I am glad to have Mario Manningham here in San Francisco. Do you think he will fit in well with the 49ers passing game?
Ohm (3:28 PM)
Hey Craig. Thanks man. I love SF. My favorite city to visit in the US. Good question. I think the Niners need more playmakers. I am sure there will be a period of time that the Niners need for Alex Smith and Manningham to get on the same page. Manningham can make plays. But he also can frustrate by dropping occasional balls and losing awareness of the sidelines or the end zone boundaries. But he can also be a deep threat. I think he should help but I don't see the Niners all of the sudden getting pass happy and becoming a prolific passing team. Still see Smith going to Vernon a ton.
I see the giants defense as ranking in the top 10 this yr, you agree?
Ohm (3:29 PM)
Mike, they keep telling me they can be better than last year and can take how they played in the last six games and transfer it to this season. We'll see but they were a top 10 unit the year before so no reason why they can't be again this season if they stop the run. They appear to be stronger overall in my mind. Depends on the secondary and how they play and health is always a big key.
Big Tom (NYC)
Which team in the NFC East is going to be the toughest competition for the Giants next year?
Ohm (3:30 PM)
Big Tom, I know Giants fans disagree with me but I still see the Eagles as the biggest threat. And the Cowboys will be up there. Now the Redskins did sweep the Giants and can give the Giants problems. But as far as threat to win the East... Eagles and then Cowboys.
who is the backup LT? if it's diehl, then who slides to RT? also doesn't Petrus need to be on the field?
Ohm (3:31 PM)
Hey FanFave... right now I think the backup LT is Brewer or Locklear. Diehl at RT. Now if Beatty goes down, perhaps the Giants might trust Diehl there at LT and then slide Brewer or Locklear at RT. As for Petrus, I don't think he "needs" to be on the field. They got Boothe and Snee at guards.
with all the depth at linebacker now, do you think we will have less plays when we have 3 safetys on the field at once
Ohm (3:33 PM)
Hey Rod, I asked Perry Fewell that and he said he feels comfortable enough to go with three linebackers more this season than in the past two years. With Deon Grant unsigned, I think they will go with more three linebacker sets. OF course, I will change my mind if they re-sign Grant in camp like they did last year. But otherwise, with the flexibility and versatility they have at linebacker, I think he could go three linebackers on first and second down and if not on third down, then put an extra DB in.
Are the Giants looking like a good team this year?
Ohm (3:34 PM)
Yes, they are the defending Super Bowl champs. But they can still win only nine or 10 games and still be a good team. Just a matter of surviving their schedule and hoping that is enough to win the division and get into the playoffs.
The Giants just swept the Dodgers out of town. Pretty cool
Ohm (3:34 PM)
Hey Darren, I cover the other Giants but yeah, SF is playing well. Great to see TL pitching!
Our cap situation is a big concern for me. Since we are already up against the cap with Cruz and Kenny Phillips set to become free agents, are we going to be able keep those guys?
Ohm (3:35 PM)
Giants can't keep everyone. That is why they have a price for everybody and stick to their guns. And that is why Osi is not getting the money he wants. They got to take care of Cruz, Nicks and JPP and Tuck down the road.
Mike (BHam, AL)
Any word on Mark Herzilech? I'm anxious to see if he can come out and be a player this year. I think he could be the long term answer in the middle.
Ohm (3:36 PM)
Mark has been playing as the second-team MLB and he has done some nice things. I don't think he will be starting at the beginning of the season but they like him on special teams and as a prospect in the future.
Fantasy ? - PPR league. Nicks in round 2 too early?
Ohm (3:37 PM)
Rza, depends on what other WRs are available at that time you pick but no, not too early. You'd love to get Nicks in the third round but he may not be there. I think it is fair to pick Nicks later in the second round after the elite receivers go.
excluding the addition of david wilson, how does the loss of Brandon Jacobs a.k.a. Ron Dayne 2 effect bradshaw, given the weight of the running game is now entirely on his shoulders.
Ohm (3:38 PM)
Bradshaw wants to carry the load this season but the Giants have to becareful with his feet and ankles. But I think because the Giants trust him so much, you could see Bradshaw carry the ball a lot more this season.
Does Rivers Crack the starting to lineup or does one of herzlich williams step up and grab a starting job?
Ohm (3:39 PM)
Still see Boley, Blackburn and Kiwanuka as the starting three on running plays for now with Boley, Jacquian Williams and perhaps Rivers in on passing downs with Kiwanuka rushing the QB.
Ohm (3:40 PM)
Alright guys, thanks for all the questions! I will try to answer more of these leftover questions in a mailbag next week. Have a great weekend!
