Ohm (1:00 PM)
Hey guys! What ya got for me?
Jason (Chantilly, VA)
So a lot of people are projecting us to take DJ Fluker or Alec Ogletree in the 1st Round. What are your thoughts on the 2 and who is more NFL ready right now?
Ohm (1:04 PM)
Of those two, I think Fluker makes a lot of sense because they need to get younger on the offensive line and really need a top-notch talent there for next season (2014) and beyond. I understand the need for linebackers as well but the Giants don't value that position as much and what I mean by that is they tend to just plug guys in there and draft some guys later in the draft for that position kind of like tight end. Ogletree, by all accounts, is crazy athletic. But there have been some reports of him being a project to a certain degree as well. Fluker sounds solid and safe. I'd love to see the Giants come away with a OL or DE or CB at 19. Not sure though if there is a pass rusher worth taking at 19 though unless someone drops. And of course, if somebody unexpectedly drops and is best player available, I never mind seeing the Giants take an exceptional talent regardless of position.
Primo (New York, NY)
Could this mean that Victor Cruz will hold out since he's a no-show for Giants voluntary camp? Do you think the Giants will eventually give him what he's asking for?
Ohm (1:05 PM)
Not showing up for voluntary camp isn't that big a deal really. These first couple of weeks all they do is strength and conditioning and by all accounts, Cruz is in terrific shape. But he does have the option of holding out later in training camp and I suppose that could always be a possibility. Have to wait and see.
MissingBoston (Washington DC)
Ohm - Thanks for taking time. Would the Giants have any interest in Olgetree?
Ohm (1:08 PM)
Thanks for stopping by! I'm not totally sure. Giants tend to keep things close to the vest at this point. But I would think he is somewhere on their radar. I believe the odds are that they will not take a linebacker at 19 if an offensive lineman is there or pass rusher or cornerback. Just looking at history, they have not taken a linebacker since 1984 in the first round. Let's just look at it this way... if they took Ogletree, is he coming in and starting right away over Connor or Jacquian or Rivers? I don't think so. And I am not saying that whomever they draft at 19 has to be an instant starter. But would Ogletree start next year? The Giants can keep going out and grabbing a veteran linebacker on the cheap to plug there and feel that they can get by and groom some other young guys that they draft late like Herzlich and Jacquian for the future. I believe they value pass rusher, OL, secondary more when it comes to first round picks.
Why haven't the giants looked into bringing in either Eric Winston or Andre Smith to fill the void at RT? is it purely a money issue or do they feel that Diehl or Brewer can step in and produce?
Ohm (1:09 PM)
Kyle, likely a little bit of both. But I do believe they are content seeing if Brewer can start or Diehl will handle the job. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't draft an OL... they need guys for 2014 and beyond.
Ray (From Southside)
waddup ohm..love ur work....is it me or cruz out pricing himself in the market?? Is this fool really gonna hold out?? Great find for being an undrafted free agent, but he is clearly not a #1 receiver
Ohm (1:10 PM)
Thanks Ray... well put yourself in Cruz's shoes. Look at his numbers. If you put up the same type of numbers or say output as some other top receivers yet they are making a lot more than you, wouldn't you have a gripe? He's just trying to maximize his value and get as much as he can. I don't blame him one bit. But if you look at who the Giants think is their number one -- they will look at Nicks as their number one and Cruz as their number two and they want to pay accordingly.
Tyler (Massapequa )
Lets say both lane Johnson and ziggy ansah fall to 19, who are the giants taking?
Ohm (1:12 PM)
Tyler, I wish I knew exactly how Jerry was thinking. But I don't. So I'm going to take a guess just like you would. And when in doubt, I think leaning toward taking a talented and raw pass rusher makes sense to me with Tuck in the final year of his deal and Osi gone.
Hey Ohm! If Vaccaro manages to drop to number 19 in the draft, can you see the Giants scooping him up? I know Stevie Brown showed flashes of greatness last season, but Vaccaro seems like a better All-Around talent. Your thoughts?
Ohm (1:14 PM)
Hi Chadi! Possible. You can definitely make an argument for them grabbing a safety at some point in this draft because Stevie is on a one-year RFA tender and Rolle will be entering the final year of his deal in 2014. When you think about the Giants' draft, always take a look toward the next season and season after that when it comes to plugging holes and think that anything that the draft picks do this season, if they contribute, will be gravy. The Giants don't throw rookies into the fire very often. Look at Wilson and Randle and other rookies in past years.
Steve Molarz (NJ)
hey Ohm, u do a great job by the way covering the giants. Always enjoy reading your articles so i thank you for that. Quick question, do you believe that Cruz in his heart of hearts, wants to be a NYG long term???? Bc i believe him and Eli work great together...
Ohm (1:15 PM)
Thanks Steve! Appreciate it and nice to know! Yes, I totally believe Victor doesn't want to be anywhere else. He wants to remain here and get the best contract he can get. He knows that on and off the field, this makes the most sense for him. Don't take anything he does for his contract personally or that he doesn't want to be here. He is just doing what is best for his future and has to do that.
What are the plans for the linebackers? Is Te'o even a consideration at 19?
Ohm (1:16 PM)
Could be but my guess is they will look at OL, DE, CB at 19... but never know. I think the plan, this is my guess right now, is to go with Jacquian, Connor and Rivers with Herzlich and Paysinger all looking to contribute and then draft a linebacker later in the draft.
Joe (The Bronx)
Ohm Whats good buddy? Listen it looks like Chip Kelly, Peyton Manning and Obvious the Patriots will all run some type of hurry-up offense or no huddle offense, an Offense we know Eli Manning can run...Why doesnt Gilbride get with the times and add some of these elements to this years offense?
Ohm (1:18 PM)
Wud up Joe... you, like many other fans, keep asking and I keep telling you guys what Gilbride and Coughlin tell us... that they say it doesn't work for them all the time. And they will always want to try to establish the run and get their power football sets out there.
Do the Giants have any interest in Tyler Eifert?
Ohm (1:18 PM)
Possible but I'd be stunned if the Giants took a tight end at 19.
If the Giants could have anyone in this draft, who do you think it would be?
Ohm (1:19 PM)
Without knowing who is at the top of their board, I would say they would be happy coming away with any non QB that goes in the top 10 probably. I don't know if Joeckel or Fisher or Millner or Jordan is at the top of their board. Sorry.
Andy (Herndon, VA)
Ohm - thanks for this. Is there a slight possibility the Giants will look at Urlacher more closely? Also what do you make of the DE's? I never want to discount Tuck, but his production is down and he's suffered numerous injuries. Almost feels like another pass rusher is needed.
Ohm (1:22 PM)
Thanks for stopping by Andy. I guess with Urlacher, never say never. Maybe as the offseason progresses, he will opt to take the vet minimum. But my guess as of now is the Giants will go with what they got and what they come out of the draft with. As for pass rusher, I am totally on board with you that they need another pass rusher. Tuck could be primed for a bounce-back season for sure but he is entering the final year of his deal. Even if Tuck beasts out and signs an extension, Giants still need another young pass rusher to add on a contract that will keep him around for several years at an affordable price.
mcgunnz (tannersville ny)
All NFL fans are obviously focused on next weekends draft and there seems to be more ambiguity regarding player rankings among draftniks than in recent years. With that said is there a sense of who the Giants would absolutely take, if that player were to fall to them at 19? Pray for the 617...Boston Strong for Life!
Ohm (1:23 PM)
Hey Mc... this is kind of like Shoresy's question from earlier... I'm not sure who is at the top of their board... might hear it closer to the draft next week. But I'd think that if anyone like the guys that will go in top 10 would be fine for them if they were to drop to 19, kind of like Prince did a few years ago. And definitely prayers go up for Boston. Stay strong Boston.
How many total picks do the Giants have in this years draft and do you think they will move up in any of the rounds to get someone they covet?
Ohm (1:25 PM)
They have eight picks, two in seventh round. Always possible but Jerry tends to value his picks and moving up means giving up picks... So likely he stays put.
Sean (South Orange)
How do you see Adrien Robinson performing this year? Also do you see the Giants backfield being better than it has the past couple of seasons?
Ohm (1:26 PM)
With Robinson, got to wait and see how he looks in camp and see if he has progressed. But Myers likely going to be the starting TE and perhaps Robinson sees some snaps. Definitely have to wait and see on the Giants backfield as well. Hard to say right now with Andre coming off a broken leg and Wilson still learning.
Primo (New York, NY)
Do you think the NY Giants will pickup another TE anywhere in the draft? How is Travis Beckum's health?
Ohm (1:27 PM)
Primo, I do think there is a possibility they draft a tight after the first two rounds. As for Beckum, not sure... he is a free agent.
Joe (The Bronx)
Thanks Ohm for taking the time i follow you on twitter ALWAYS (@onestopliquor) One more Question...No one is talking about the Giants As a contender for this years NFC Championship Game. Who in ranked order, are your pre season favorite Top 5 teams?
Ohm (1:28 PM)
Thanks for following Joe. Appreciate it. Wow... that is a tough question right now. I've been so focused on everything else. Haven't thought that far ahead. But I do think the Giants can contend again this season. Let's see what their schedule is on Thursday first... could be another brutal second half of the season... LOL
If the giants draft ogletree, with Williams and another linebacker possibly paysinger, that's a speedy/solid core. Maybe it could be enough to stop rg3 and chip Kelly
Ohm (1:29 PM)
Possible but they already have decent speed with Jacquian and Rivers. And remember, Giants tend to play three safeties as well so if you draft a linebacker, you are playing him for two downs more often than not.
Ohm (1:30 PM)
Ok guys. Thanks for all the questions. See you guys sometime next week!
