Rumors are swirling at the University of South Carolina. Is it out with the old and in with the ... slightly less old?
Reports have Steve Spurrier, 59, agreeing in principle to replace a retiring Lou Holtz as the head coach of the Gamecocks in 2005. Nothing is official, but Holtz's recent comments in support of Spurrier certainly make it seem like a done deal.
Luring Spurrier back to the sideline would be a major coup for South Carolina, but would it be enough to improve on the foundation of SEC success laid by Holtz? Can the Gamecocks ever be a perennial power in the rough-and-tumble Southeastern Conference? And will Spurrier's fun-n-gun offense work with this bunch?
