Vote: Did Sheffield's restraint save the day?

For a few seconds on Thursday night, it appeared that the best rivalry in sports would add a less than memorable chapter.

Chasing a Jason Varitek triple down the right-field line at Fenway Park, Gary Sheffield was struck in the face by a Boston fan. After throwing the ball back to the infield, Sheffield turned to confront the fan but appeared to think twice about striking back. Fenway security intervened, and baseball was spared its own version of the Pacers-Pistons brawl.

So what the heck happened in Boston? Was the fan trying to hit Sheffield? Or was he simply going after a souvenir in an especially inept way? Was this a one-time incident, or do the Red Sox or MLB need to act?
