Page 2's Battle for the Soul of Sports has begun! Anger and Kindness have entered the ring and are ready to duke it out!

Anger steps through the ropes with an impressive mix of old and new, including perhaps the biggest current poster boy for rage, the brawl-inciting Ron Artest. And his most angry contemporaries are also in the mix: "goon-it-up" hoops coach John Chaney and chair-throwing, player-choking coach Bobby Knight.

But don't forget the old-school examples like short-tempered former Yankees player and manager Billy Martin, Cardinals intimidator Bob Gibson and Raiders hit man Jack Tatum. Then you have the 'tweeners, those who practiced acrimony and fury in recent years but have since retired: sucker-punching linebacker Bill Romanowski, loudmouth pitcher John Rocker and "Super Brat" tennis player John McEnroe.

Squaring off against that malicious group are some of the gentlest souls in sports history. Arthur Ashe was gracious in the face of bigotry and ignorance, Steve Largent went from the gridiron to the state house and Walter Payton was courageous when facing down illness.

Today's benevolent souls are also taking part, from squeaky-clean quarterback Tom Brady and the stoic Tim Duncan to the charitable hearts of David Robinson, Alex Rodriguez, Phil Mickleson and Oscar De La Hoya.
