Like the sweet smell of pine trees, the good cheer of friends and family and the horrendous parking at the shopping mall, college football bowl games are a staple of the holiday season. And while the four BCS games control the championshp picture, the other bowls often offer up the season's most memorable moments and fantastic finishes.

When: Dec. 31, 2:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2)

The Game: A product of the internet age, the EV1.net Houston Bowl began life as the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl in 2000. Now played at Reliant Stadium, in Houston, Texas, the game has conference ties with the SEC and Big 12, although the SEC will not be represented this season.

The Teams: Iowa State (7-4, 4-4) finished in a tie for second in the Big 12 North and shared the fifth-best record in the conference. TCU (10-1, 8-0) won the Mountain West.
