Barry Bonds is now in sole possession of sports' most hallowed record, having finally blasted his way past the immortal Hank Aaron.

Bonds' pursuit of the record has morphed into a long and torturous process, each towering shot spawning accusations, rebuttals, and reams of controversey. Did Bonds use steroids? Should his records be considered legitimate? Is he better than Hammerin' Hank?

These questions haven't disappeared simply because Bonds has entered uncharted statistical territory -- if anything, they've intensified. The possibility of Bonds holding the record has become an undeniable certainty. Where Bonds will eventually stand in baseball history is now up to the fans, writers, and his fellow players.
