The Portland weather outside was cloudy and dark. The news that came over the airwaves and internet was just as gloomy. The face of the Portland Trail Blazers, the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, Greg Oden, out for the year after microfracture surgery on his right knee.

All the excitement of a new era in Portland that began the minute NBA commissioner David Stern uttered Oden's name in connection with Portland's pick, is gone. All that remains are the familiar questions about what might happen. What the future might hold.
