Wimbledon Heats Up

It's a good thing it's been four years since Roger Federer's next opponent, Robin Soderling, took a set off the No. 2 seed. Besides trying to complete the difficult feat of back-to-back French Open and Wimbledon titles, Federer goes into the second week of play knowing he must win the title to regain his No. 1 ranking. And oh, yeah, he can stake a claim as the greatest player in tennis history with a 15th Grand Slam title.

Perhaps Federer's main competition comes from the next generation of British men's tennis, Andy Murray, who faces more than a few expectations from his countrymen. The No. 3 seed, Murray, cruised through his last match, but he's never reached the semis at Wimbledon. If he were to win his home major, he'd be 5 points short of taking over the No. 1 ranking. He would also, perhaps, help bring some sunshine back to his hometown of Dunblane -- which has been clouded by tragedy ever since 1996.

What a horrific scene the town of Dunblane had to endure. I am glad to see that they have gotten the hope back they need in Andy Murray with the tragedy. I don't follow tennis much, but from what I have read and heard on Andy, he is exactly what this town needs -- a hero. He has as good of a shot as anyone at Wimbledon, and I hope this town gets the light back they talk about. Go get 'em Andy!

What happened in Dunblane was awful, and for Andy Murray to give his hometown something to cheer about and be proud of is great to see. Go win Wimbledon, Andy.

    • Graham WatsonI think him not being a finalist for the Davey was pretty telling. He's put up great numbers, but his schedule is going to hurt him when it comes to NYC.
    • Kertis (Troy, AL)Assuming Troy handles business and clinches an outright Sun Belt title, is there any justifiable reason for them to go bowling anywhere other than New Orleans? St.Pete's, GMAC, and Papa John's Bowls seem like a step down as far as the trips go. What's your take?
    • Graham WatsonHere's what I'm hearing... The GMAC Bowl would like to pit the MAC champ and the Belt champ. However, they can only do that if there are three Belt teams with seven wins and if New Orleans agrees. Louisiana-Monroe kinda blew it last week with the loss to Lafayette. Now, either Monroe or Lafayette have to win this week to get a seventh win or the Belt has to get lucky and have one of their six-win teams taken over a seven-win team, which I don;t see happening.
    • Jim Crozier (Boise, Idaho)Would you mind pointing out the quality win on Oklahoma State's schedule?
