Ever since Dale Jarrett and his crew started the tradition way back in 1996 (OK, that's not all that far back, but bear with us), NASCAR drivers have been competing for the right to kiss the bricks at the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.

According to David Newton, however, the luster may be gone despite the promise of a makeout session with exhaust-flavored stone. NASCAR is at a crossroads, and could be going the way of open-wheel racing (hint: that's not a good way to go). Competitiveness is down, conformity is up, and even a league as strong as NASCAR could be given pause.

The much-hyped Car of Tomorrow, for instance, performed poorly in the race last year, although much of the blame could be laid at the feet of substandard tires. Despite that, the race featured a close-fought finish, with Jimmie Johnson edging out Carl Edwards at its conclusion. Could we see a repeat?

the new car is still in it's early phase...they'll be making some changes in the next few years and before anyone realizes it the COT will be just as appreciated as any other car

want ratings to go thru the roof? want more butt's in the stands? well both of these can be achieved by one thing. let drivers show emotion, let driver A walk up to the driver that wrecked him and punch him in the nose. let driver A use his front bumper to adjust the body work on drivers B car without fear of Nascar docking them points and being placed on double super secret probation

With the exception of the '08 race, I think most of the Brickyard races have been entertaining and I enjoy them.

Nascar has a robust sponsorship in place. That is how it has money. As for who watches it, well the ratings speak for themselves. I don't particlularly enjoy Nascar really, but many many people do. To me it's just as exciting as golf on television. I'm a F-1 fan and grew up watching Ayrton Senna, Schumacher, Mansel, Mika and all those other great drivers. I'd love to see more circuit driving in the states. I think that this new car is jumping the shark a bit when they don't really have to.
