There's been a lot of talk in recent days about tests taken and home runs hit in 2003, mostly because some guys named Manny, David and Alex happened to lead the American League in the latter and wind up on a list of players who failed the former.

But those aren't the only numbers from the 2003 season that induce a double-take in retrospect (and no, we're not talking about Bill Mueller winning a batting title). We're talking about the wins column for National League pitchers that season, on which Mark Prior, Kerry Wood and Dontrelle Willis all owned impressive real estate en route to meeting in the NLCS. Just six years later. Wood has a 5.11 ERA and five blown saves for the Indians -- and he's the success story out of the group.

Prior was released last week by the Padres, and while voters don't think he's made his last start in the majors, it's not exactly a road leading to Cooperstown anymore. As for Willis, let's just say SportsNation has more faith in Detroit's car companies than him.

Ted (Seattle)

Who are you most surprised didn't become a star: Mark Prior, Kerry Wood or Dontrelle Willis?

Buster Olney
Buster Olney

Ted: Prior. He was so good. He'll be the guy you'll tell your kids about in 15 years and say, 'You know who was really good? This guy named Mark Prior...' And they'll have to go and look up his numbers before they believe you. It's really a shame the way it has gone for him. Full transcript.

    • Tristan H. CockcroftMaybe 15 carries or so and enough production to warrant low-No. 2/flex-play status if he is cleared by game time. Another case of you need to check back with our inactives report, because I won't endorse Benson if he's not a participant in Friday's practice.
    • Dan (Ann Arbor)Tristan, thank god you're here! Got some tough decisions. Start Steve Smith (NYG) or Crabtree at WR? And then who out of these 3 RB's: Pierre Thomas, LeSean McCoy, or Justin Forsett?
    • Tristan H. CockcroftTough for me to pick Michael Crabtree over Steve Smith, but if there's any week to do it, it's Week 12. I'm going to make that bold call and pick the rookie, being that the Jaguars have one of the worst pass defenses in the league and will be down their top cover corner Rashead Mathis. I think Crabtree is a strong bet -- think 75-percent probability at least -- to score his second career touchdown. Among running backs, I really want no part of Pierre Thomas right now if I can help it, but you might not be able to help it because of the Julius Jones situation mentioned earlier. Sit Thomas if Forsett is the starter, sit Forsett if Julius Jones gets a glowing recommendation.
    • John (Kansas)SIDNEY RICE -- rock solid WR1 the rest of the way?
