It's That Time Again

SportsNation thought the two-game series between the Red Sox and Rays was clearly the best the first half of the week had to offer, but that was just the appetizer (albeit one that left Red Sox Nation with heartburn after back-to-back losses). The real fun comes with four games at the new Yankee Stadium against the team they're chasing in the standings.

This Red Sox-Yankees thing has been going on since the days of Roger Peckinpaugh and Heinie Wagner. But SportsNation's interest has admittedly peaked since about 2003 (back when voters were already making a case that Mariano Rivera was washed up).

In more recent times, the first four months of this season have already seen SportsNaton changing its tune. In early June, 58 percent of SportsNation picked the Red Sox to win the division. A month later, support held strong at 56 percent. But by Monday of this week, the Yankees had the popular support to go with their lead in the standings.

For some, the Yankees and Red Sox are starting to feel like two old friends, in that they're not nearly as much fun to be around as we remembered. But for most, it's still special when these two get together.

Pretty important series for the Sox. But unfortunately, it seems the pitching matchups are in the Yanks' favor. While it's good to have Lester and Beckett pitching, Smoltz vs. Joba (who's been very good lately) and Buchholz vs. Sabathia? Eek. But then again, it seems like a lot of weird stuff can happen in Sox-Yanks games. Hopefully, the Sox can split the series and finish their road-trip with a 5-4 record. Regardless, I can't wait. Should be a fun series that could really heat up the race.

I am a die hard Sox fan, but I'm not a homer and I'm objective. There is absolutely no way an objective fan can think Boston will win tonight with John "here's a meatball" Smoltz pitching against Joba "lights out since AS Break" Chamberlain.
