More than 45,000 runners will participate in this year's race that begins in Staten Island and winds through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx before finishing in Central Park. To some, a marathon is a tantalizing test of physical and mental endurance. To others, it is a brutal, inexplicable way to spend the better chunk of a day.
