Chat with Mel Kiper

Mel Kiper
  (1:04 PM)

We're ready to go!

Dave (NYC)

Mel, Who's the best player in the draft that we've never heard of?

Mel Kiper
  (1:05 PM)

I think Danieal Manning from Abilene Christian. David Pittman. Chris Gokung. Those are just a few guys that are not D-1A players.

Bob, Atl Ga

Since GM's are so HIGH on Matt Schaub ,Where you rate Matt Schaub in comparison to the top 3 QB's in the draft? - based on his College and NFL experience?

Mel Kiper
  (1:06 PM)

You can't compare Schaub, because he's in the league. That's a big mistake. You make that mistake when you compare players in the league to incoming players. It's unfair to judge college players to NFL guys.

Joseph, Las Vegas, Nevada

Antonio Cromartie's stock continues to soar. Is there any chance he ends up going as high as 9 to the Lions, or 13 to Baltimore?

Mel Kiper
  (1:06 PM)

I don't think he'll go that high. It wouldn't shock me, but I think he'll go in that 19-26 area.

Eric from Troy, Illinois

What is the Brodrick Bunkley biggest draw back? And what scheme is he best suited to play in?

Mel Kiper
  (1:08 PM)

I think in terms of what the Bills are doing with the attacking scheme. Quickness off the ball. From what Buffalo wants the DLs to do, Bunkley's a good fit. The only concern I have with Bunkley is he had a great year and shot up from this past year.

Michael Upper Marlboro MD

Do the Raiders need to draft a QB? Seems like they need to draft DB's.

Mel Kiper
  (1:08 PM)

Yes they will. The only way they consider a QB is if Young slips down that far. Sims or Hawk or Huff are all possibilities.

Sadihy (Venezuela)

Hi Mel, how does Ricky Williams suspension affect the Dolphins draft board?

Mel Kiper
  (1:09 PM)

It really doesn't. I think they'll look for a RB later on. Andre Hall from South Florida. I would say that they have so many other needs, OL, WR and others.

Brian Cincinnati OH

Who do you think that the Bengals need the most out of this draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:10 PM)

I think DB help, be it a S or CB would be great for the Bengals. In the first round, pencil in a Cromartie, Jimmy Williams. They could also use a DL as well.

Jordan (Hampton, NJ)

With Favre coming back do the Packers still think about picking up one of the top three QB's in the draft if they are left on the board?

Mel Kiper
  (1:11 PM)

No, I didn't think they would before this. They have to have confidence that Aaron Rodgers is going to do the job. I think they look at Hawk or Ferguson to help get them some help.

Steve, Thousand Oaks, CA

How does the recent acquisition of Ricky Manning Jr to the Bears affect their draft status @ #26? Will they finally focus their attention to a needed Tight End?

Mel Kiper
  (1:12 PM)

Yeah, I think TE. What they can do now is trade down in the first round. They lost a third round pick for Manning. They could move down and get a Dominique Byrd from USC, Anthony Fasano from Notre Dame.

rusty austin tx

how far do you think vince young will drop to? and to whome do you think he will end up going?

Mel Kiper
  (1:13 PM)

I think he goes to 3 to Tennessee or 7 to Oakland. If he starts to slide, Arizona would try to trade up to get him.

J.T. Cleveland MS

Mel, i am a big fan of your work. What kinds of problems do you think GM'S and owners have with Memphis running back Deangelo Williams?

Mel Kiper
  (1:14 PM)

I don't think they have any problems at all with DeAngelo. He put up great yards. He had a great Senior Bowl week. I don't think he gets enough attention for the type of running back he can become.

Ari (Woodmere, NY)

Any chance the Raiders get Vernon Davis, TE from maryland and how good do u think he can be??

Mel Kiper
  (1:15 PM)

He would be one of the players under consideration for the Raiders. He's a great talent. He's got great athleticism. He's basically a WR in an TE frame. He would look great in a 49er, Cardinal, Raiders uniform.

Will ( Columbus, Ohio)

I have heard a lot about Ohio State's linebackers AJ Hawk and Bobby Carpenter, is the third linebacker from Ohio State Anthony Schlegel going to be even drafted? And what about the defensive end Mike Kudla?

Mel Kiper
  (1:16 PM)

Schlegel is probably a 5-7 round possibility. He's probably a backup in the NFL. Kudla, I think is a guy that will be a situational DL in the NFL.

Bruce(Phila. Pa)

Do you think the Eagles might go for Nick Mangold?

Mel Kiper
  (1:17 PM)

Mangold, they did try to do some things in free agency to secure the OL. I think he goes in the late first, early second.

Kris, Mesa, AZ

Who will the cowboys be able to get with the 18th pick that will help improve there pass D.

Mel Kiper
  (1:17 PM)

Jason Allen is a guy that I target for the Cowboys. If they want to upgrade the OLB spot, they could look at Manny Lawson.

Dave (Kirkuk, Iraq)

What are the chances Lendale White slips to the Steelers at #32? What are the chances of the Steelers trading up with the Bears to jump ahead of other possible suitors for White?

Mel Kiper
  (1:19 PM)

We appreciate all the work you're doing in Iraq. It's a possibility. They might just feel that White could fall to them. The Jags have some other options as well.

Carson, Tallahassee Fl.

The Browns at 12.....is it Wimbley or if Ngata falls to them will they grab him?

Mel Kiper
  (1:19 PM)

I think Wimbley and Ngata are ideal for the Browns' structure. I think Wimbley would be a nice pick at that point.

Drew NY NY

Accorsi and the Gmen will go best player available at 25. Any DT worth a late first round pick (after Ngata and Bunkley)?? Or with they likely go with a CB?? Thanks.

Mel Kiper
  (1:21 PM)

I think the fact that they added some CBs doesn't preclude them from taking one. I would think a Kelly Jennings would still make sense, or I think Sinorice Moss as a return man/WR to add a quickness dimension taht they don't have right now.

Ray, Bozeman MT

Is Tye Hill going to make it to the Seahawks #31 pick?

Mel Kiper
  (1:22 PM)

No chance, in my opinion. He's too good. He had an oustanding year. He had great Senior Bowl practices. I don't think there's any chance he's there. I don't think he gets past 20 to KC.

Ronnie (Memphis,Tn)

What player do you think will have the biggest impact in his first season? Deangelo Williams or Reggie Bush?

Mel Kiper
  (1:23 PM)

Reggie Bush will have the most impact, because he can help you in so many ways. He'll factor in the running game, passing game and on special teams. But I do like Williams, he's going to be a good running back.

Nick , New York

How does one man know so much about the draft? do you ever sleep this time of the year? and would you say that this is probably the most hyped draft in a very long time?

Mel Kiper
  (1:24 PM)

I would definitely say that this is the most talked about draft in a long time. I've been doing this for 27 teams. We have an elite eight palyers in this draft. Last year we didn't have one. I think the talent dictated that this is one to talk about. As far as sleep, you don't get much this time of year in any year.

Howie: Raleigh, NC

If Texas does not take Mario Williams, are their any other teams that would make a trade up to get him or can he plan on playing in NO next year?

Mel Kiper
  (1:25 PM)

I would think New Orleans is in consideration. The Titans are definitely taking a QB, the Jets have other needs. I think Williams goes in the top 4-5 but most likely goes to NO.

Barry (Minden, LA)

If Cutler is this year's Aaron Rodgers and slips to 18, do you think Dallas would grab him, or let him fall?

Mel Kiper
  (1:27 PM)

You can't compare him to Rodgers because he's not projected in the top five like Rodgers was. It's a little different situation. Cutler has a better grade than Rodgers, which speaks about how good this draft is.

Matt, (Detroit MI)

Always been curious what goes in the draft war rooms. How much trade talk is going on between teams that we never hear of?

Mel Kiper
  (1:28 PM)

Lots. A lot of teams consider trading before making their pick. Teams are locked into the guys that they want. So they have to weigh what they would get in return and what they can get. There are lots of deals that are weighed and looked at to see if they're getting equal value for their pick.

Andrew (VA)

Where does Darryl Tapp fit in the NFL as far as scheme and position? Does he makes sense for the Skins at #53?

Mel Kiper
  (1:29 PM)

No, not really. They picked up a pass rushing DE in free agency. What makes sense for the Redskins is a OLB or CB. I have them taking Rocky McIntosh. Tapp is a solid second round pick. He would have been a late first if he had run better at the combine.

Omar-Brentwood CA

in the long run who will have a better carrer. Matt Lienart or Vince young?

Mel Kiper
  (1:30 PM)

I think Leinart. Young will have a very good career as well. You can have drafts where there are several good QBs coming out of the draft.

mike (Oklahoma)

What do you think about the cowboys drafting the A&M QB/WR Mcneal in the 2nd round

Mel Kiper
  (1:31 PM)

Too high. Way too high. He's a developmental QB who needs some work. He's a great athlete, but I don't know if he's going to be a WR. I wouldn't consider him until the 4-5 round, no higher.

Ryan (Denver)

Is a trio of DeAngelo Williams, Leonard Pope and Travis Wilson possible for the Bronocos through the first two rounds?

Mel Kiper
  (1:32 PM)

I'd say at 15 I would think WR, it's too high for Pope. I would go WR over Williams, maybe Holmes or Jackson. I don't have a problem with Williams there. They have to get a WR at some point.

JHOVE - BOSTON

MEL, HOW ABOUT MY PATRIOTS, WHO WOULD THEY TAKE IN THE 1ST?

Mel Kiper
  (1:34 PM)

They have a lot of options. They could go RB, LB, WR, CB. A lot of options. I have them taking Santonio Holmes a WR.

Mel Kiper
  (1:34 PM)

I'm going to have a new first and second round projection on Friday afternoon.

Paul (Navarre, FL)

With all of the injuries Alabama's QB Croyle had, will he slip past the 3rd round?

Mel Kiper
  (1:35 PM)

No, I think he goes in the second round. He'll be a real good pick at that point.

JohnO Denver CO

With Sims and Greenway possibly going before the Vikings 17th pick, who do you see them going after?

Mel Kiper
  (1:36 PM)

I think one of those two will be there. Sims could be and he would be a nice pick. If they're gone, they you have to see if Cutler's there. I don't think all three will be gone at that point.

Anthony (DC)

With Mathias or Hali stock dropping will one of them be there at 53rd pick?

Mel Kiper
  (1:37 PM)

Hali will still go late first, early second. Kiwanuka will be a better shot to be there.

Ian (Glen Rock, NJ)

Is Sinorice Moss the next Steve Smith or will he prove to be too small? Where do you see him going? Possibly 25 to the Giants?

Mel Kiper
  (1:38 PM)

I think he'll be a great pick for the Giants in the first round. He's similar to his brother. He's tough, quick. He's a game changer and TD maker. He'd be a big asset to the Giants. He's in a Ernest Givens mold frmo the Oilers

Mel Kiper
  (1:39 PM)

We appreciate the questions. We have to cut this a little short today, because I'm going to tape some stuff for NFL Live right now. But we'll be back next Wednesday for a big wrap up, and we'll definitely go a full hour, maybe an hour and a half.
