Chat with Page 2's Bill Simmons

  (12:18 PM)

Bill will be by at 12:30 p.m. ET to take all your questions. Get ready for The Sports Guy!

Bill Simmons
  (12:32 PM)

Here we go...

Kevin (Calgary, AB)

How pumped are you to throw sideline bombs to Randy Moss in Madden 08? I have the feeling the Pats are going to be one of those "screw you the computer is winning this game" teams.

Bill Simmons
  (12:33 PM)

I was thinking about this the other day - normally when I get the game, I have to make 3-4 shady trades to fill out the roster. This year? I'm pulling a Gene Hackman and saying, "This is your team!"

Chris Maine

Simmons, you got an iPhone yet? I've heard disappointing reviews.

Bill Simmons
  (12:35 PM)

I didn't get one - the device seemed so complicated and ambitious that it scared me off, I wanted to wait until they worked out the kinks. I wish Orlando had done this with their cap space - instead, they spent $126 million on Rashard Lewis. Please send me 500,000 questions on that signing. I want to devote the whole chat to it.

JKL(Boston, MA)

If you're Orlando aren't you better off saving that cap room used up on Rashard Lewis to see if you can grab someone better next season?

Bill Simmons
  (12:36 PM)

Wait, you think they would have been better off not paying a $50 million player $126 million? Are you sure?

Andrew (Brooklyn, NY)

Isn't it fitting that Barry Bonds called Alex Rodriguez one of his closest friends last night? What the heck do those two talk about? And does A-Rod try to hard during those conversations like he does in all other conversations in his life?

Bill Simmons
  (12:37 PM)

They met in a "Nobody Likes Us" support group.

LJ (Portland, OR)

Are you really saying that the Zach Randolph trade was good for the Knicks? They just tied up their salary cap for the next four years for a guy that's an exact duplicate of Curry. And can you imagine LeBron breaking into the lane to find Curry and Z-Bo between him and the basket? He's gonna go for 60.

Bill Simmons
  (12:39 PM)

I just think that, if you can get a relatively young guy who might average a 26-10 in your conference, and the price is Channing Frye (who sucks) and Steve Francis (who they were going to buy out), you have to do it. If it doesn't work out, they can always send him somewhere else. I think they're going to be really tough to play - for instance, how would a team like the Celts be able to guard both guys at the same time?

Bobby Eiswirth (Regina, SK, Canada)

How much weight do you and NBA teams put into the summer league performances? Are the tonsils the first in a long line of excuses?

Bill Simmons
  (12:40 PM)

Back in 2003, when the Summer LEague was in Boston, both Kedrick Brown and Brandon Hunter made 1st-team All-Star. That's how much weight I put into it.

Jerome (Encino, CA)

You always dream of two players fighting to the death like Emilio Estevez and Esai Morales.... well, if the Knicks get Artest to go along with Randolph, Curry, and the now unquestionably insane Marbury, wouldn't this be the greatest team implosion ever???

Bill Simmons
  (12:41 PM)

Emilio Estevez and Esai Morales???? how dare you! It was Sean Penn and Esai Morales! And by the way, "Bad Boys" is in the cable rotation right now and I defy anyone to watch that movie and tell me it still doesn't hold up.

Mike (Boston)

Bassy Telfair's "dedicated the entire summer to basketball". I can't figure out if this makes me happy because he might start to hint at his potential or full of rage over the fact that Ainge traded for a point guard who needs to be arrested and almost released to think working on his game in the off-season might be a good idea.

Bill Simmons
  (12:42 PM)

I love when players say this. Seriously, you have to love the NBA - it's the only league where someone can say, "Hey, I spent the summer working on the job that you're paying me to do" and everyone else is like, "Wow, that's great news!"

Clinton (Indianapolis)

Bill, did you make another attempt at the WSOP Main Event this year, or did last year's debacle scar you for life?

Bill Simmons
  (12:45 PM)

I actually ended up not playing this year ... variety of reasons why, but it just didn't happen. I'm actually glad I didn't go, I would have lost on some BS beat and then you would have to read me complaining about it right now.

J.R. (Falls Church, VA)

Is Steve Francis really the point guard the clippers need? They don't really need his scoring and he brings too many other flaws that can potentially hurt the team more than help it. Besides, they could resign Hart or pick up Brevin Knight for considerably less moeny and Cassell will be healthy next year.

Bill Simmons
  (12:46 PM)

I don't think Steve Francis works in any sentence that involves the words "Is Steve Francis really the point guard (fill in the team) needs?" Put a fork in him.

AK (Chicago)

Who's more NOW, You or Ronald Jenkees?

Bill Simmons
  (12:47 PM)

I'd say Jenkees. Also, I called Time Warner to ask them for the ESPN package that didn't involve "Who's more now?" and they said it doesn't exist. So I think we're stuck with it.

Jake (Denver)

If you were forced to fight any player in the NBA, your choice, who's your pick? In pro sports?

Bill Simmons
  (12:48 PM)

I think I could take Travis Diener.

Jakob (Portland, OR)

How are you dealing with all of your pent up excitment and anticipation of David Beckham's arrival in LA?

Bill Simmons
  (12:49 PM)

I'm doing a lot of sit-ups and a lot of pacing.

Rob (Portland, OR)

How excited are you for the dawn of the "Scott Baio is 45 and Single" era? Can they intermingle the Battle of the Network Stars clips in here somehow? Will Zapped make it back into HBO rotation? I'm rooting for a Scott Baio renaissance, especially if it means him getting the lead in the next Tarantino movie.

Bill Simmons
  (12:49 PM)

I'm somewhere between "titillated" and "euphoric"

Rocky Lotito (New Jersey)

So did you watch the first episode of "The Bronx Is Burning"? I thought it was OK, but the absolute highlight for me came about halfway in during a scene where a few cops were talking about the Son Of Sam murders, and in walks Dan Lauria, a.k.a. Kevin Arnold's dad from The Wonder Years. Two things struck me about this scene: 1, this is easily the most unexpected cameo I've ever witnessed in my life, and 2, this guy is an absolute dead ringer for Joe Torre, right down to the fact that neither one has ever smiled (for a split second, I thought it was actually Torre making a cameo). Thoughts?

Bill Simmons
  (12:51 PM)

I did watch the first episode, and I loved the Dan Lauria out-of-nowhere cameo. I thought it was shockingly watchable and Turturro was really good. With that said, I think they should have merged the two ideas and had Son of Sam gunning down members of the '77 Yankees.

Travis (Indianapolis)

I propose we strip LArry Bird of the title "Basketball Jesus." Jesus certainly would not have put together this craptacular Pacers roster and said it was good.

Bill Simmons
  (12:51 PM)

How dare you.

Mike, DC

Am I wrong, or was Eric Byrne's dog swimming away from the boat the best part of the all-star game? Or was it Willie's pink caddy?

Bill Simmons
  (12:52 PM)

No, Byrnes's dog was the best part - because every TV viewer could empathize with the dog.

Ryan (Framingham, MA)

Did you hear Chris Berman refer to Pujols as Albert "Winnie the" Pujols at the HR Derby? Can we get him to stop using these ridiculous nicknames?

Bill Simmons
  (12:52 PM)

Come on, there's no way that happened.

Eric (Raleigh, NC)

How did Antonie Walker prevent the robber from getting a shot off?

Bill Simmons
  (12:53 PM)

Now THAT is a good joke.

Ryan (Portland, OR)

First impressions of Jacoby Ellsbury?

Bill Simmons
  (12:55 PM)

Fastest Red Sox player of all-time. Watching him go from 2nd to home on a wild pitch was the single most exciting moment of the season other than JC Romero somehow getting out of a based loaded jam 9th inning in Oakland with one out when he can't throw a strike.

Stu, Brooklyn, NY

How impressed were you with Marcus Banks' 42 points in a summer league game? Another Ainge mishap?

Bill Simmons
  (12:57 PM)

The best part of that game was new Suns GM Steve Kerr frantically making DVD copies of the game to send to the other NBA GM's. "Hey guys? He's available!"

Steve McManama Stratford, CT

Recently you had some nice remarks about Jared Dudley of your distaste for Boston College fading??

Bill Simmons
  (12:59 PM)

I've never had a distaste for BC. My Mom went there. I just like making BC jokes because they upset her. That's really the only reason. I love BC people - without them, everyone would want to move to Boston. They keep the numbers down.

Tony (Blacksburg, VA)

This years Espy's has the potential of being the most entertaining Espy's ever. Jimmy and LeBron seem like a match made in heaven. Maybe Jimmy can even become Lebron's Haley and take Larry Huge's roster spot. I'd rather be paying Kimmel 13 million for sitting on the end of the bench than pay Huge that much to play. At least Jimmy could make people laugh.

Bill Simmons
  (1:02 PM)

I am biased on this question because I wrote jokes for Jimmy and stuff, but I think it's going to be an entertaining show - as far as contrived and ridiculous sports award shows go. It's taping tonight and runs on Sunday. I have seen the guest list and let's just say that there are a ton of Indy Colts on it. So if you're a Pats fan, and you remember that we didn't win a Best Team ESPY in any of the 3 SB years, you might want to avoid this show. No, really.

Jon (Solihull, UK)

After last seasons amazingly insightful slew of EPL columns, which team are you thinking of using as the basis of this years series?

Bill Simmons
  (1:04 PM)

You know, it's going to be tough to top what I pulled off last year, but I'll do my best. I think I am more of sa World Cup "once every four years for 2 weeks" and "cool, Victory's on!" kind of soccer fan. That's all I can give.

John K. (Dorchester, MA)

We should recut the fight scene in "Bad Boys" so you can pummel Danny and Doc with a pillowcase full of soda cans... Cut to the next scene: first step as the Celtic's new GM, assigning Ainge & Rivers to the s--thouse!

Bill Simmons
  (1:04 PM)

I don't want to hurt Doc and Danny... I just want them to become TV analysts.

Chris( Versailles KY)

Billy boy! This has to be one of the most boring weeks in sports, being that the ESPY's, a boring free agent period, and a worthless baseball game are the highlights. Has this week been a complete bore to you as a journalist?? What top stories have kept you interested?

Bill Simmons
  (1:07 PM)

Really, none of them. This has been an awful sports month. Although I have to say, I did enjoy Wimbledon this year - the Nadal-Federer match was incredible. It was like watching a video tennis game where somebody turned the ability on both sides to 100-percent, then had the computer play it out. Federer is amazing. If you want preoof that tennis is dead as a sport, just look at the fact that Federer is better at his job than any other athlete is better at their job, then look at how few people feel obligated to watch him or Wimbledon.

Kevin (Chicago, IL)

Rashard Lewis' deal is awful, but it can't be the worst Max deal ever. Who is the worst player ever to get a max deal? Marbury?

Bill Simmons
  (1:09 PM)

No. it's the worst max deal ever. It's the worst sports contract in history. They gave a max contract to someone who has one skill (scoring), and he's not even that good at that skill. He's like a better Hedu Turkoglu. He plays 40 mins a game, scores 20 points and grabs you 5 boards. Congratulations.

Greg Oden, Portland, Oregon

Hey Bill, Could you run by Baskin Robbins for me later this week? I'll be needing lots of ice cream.

Bill Simmons
  (1:10 PM)

Greg, your tonsils were so bad that you were walking around the pre-ESPY's party at the Roosevelt Hotel at midnight last night. Care to explain? I thought the reason you committed 19 fouls in 2 summer league games was because you were sick?

Dan (NY)

Worst player to get a max deal? Wrong Knick. It has to be Allan Houston. I'm a Knicks fan, and this huge mess they call a franchise all started with him getting top 2 guard money. They even had to make a rule for his contract.

Bill Simmons
  (1:11 PM)

At least Allan Houston was the best guy on a team that made the Finals. What has Rashard Lewis ever done? Sonics fans thought he was soft and unreliable... even in their one playoff run two years ago, he was hurt half the time.

Tim (DC)

Keith Van Horn was a worse max contract, hands down...

Bill Simmons
  (1:11 PM)

I'd rather pay $71 million to KVH than $126 million to Lewis.

John, Memphis, TN

Where are the podcasts? I'm not ashamed to admit that I miss them. Who's your next guest? Better yet, who would you like to have on but would deny you 99/100 times?

Bill Simmons
  (1:13 PM)

The podcasts come back tomorrow (Thursday) and we'll be doing them every week on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. It was a total accident that we skipped 2 weeks - the first week, Chad Ford was supposed to be the guest and we did the interactive mock draft instead. Then, I had last week off. We have a ton of good stuff in store for the podcast, I'm excited.

Jens (Copenhagen)

Bill can u explain what the Magic were thinking when they gave Rashard "I'm a skinnier Antoine Walker" Lewis a deal worth $125 mill?!? Please take me trough their thought proces, because I have no idea what they were thinking!

Bill Simmons
  (1:14 PM)

It's inexplicable. I can't do it. There's no possible way to explain it or justify it.

Ian (Kent, WA)

The contract Felipe Lopez got to come to St. Johns was the worst max-deal ever.

Thomas (Houston, TX)

Bill what is your opinion on Dan Patrick's decision to leave ESPN?

Bill Simmons
  (1:16 PM)

I was bummed out - he's one of my favorites and he was a huge part of ESPN, it's hard to imagine the company without him. I heard his radio show on Monday and his reasons sounded genuine, I think he's just burned out and needs a new challenge. Totally respect that. My prediction is that he'll take some time off, then bounce back with a syndicated radio show - him and OIlbermann. It's the natural move and the right move for him. I also think he'd made a fantastic "Price is Right" host, that's right in his wheelhouse. But I have a great deal of respect for him and wish him the best.

Jon (Phoenix ,AZ)

Can Steve Kerr go ahead and offer the league minimum to Rashard Lewis for the 2013-2014 season? or does he have to wait?

Joel Brown (Del Mar, CA)

Did you happen to catch the All-Star Legends & "Celebrity" Softball Game on Monday? Your boy Jimmy did his best, but the intentional comedy he supplied was no match for the unintentional comedy of James Denton, Dane Cook, and Kenny Mayne playing as if it was Game 7 of the World Series. While Dane and Kenny were obviously trying WAAAAY too hard, Denton took it to a whole 'nother level with his "playoff" beard, Nomar-like batting glove routing, and menacing "gameface" scowl...he even topped it off with a dead serious interview with Erin Andrews in which he broke down the technique that allowed him to blast a HR over a 200 foot fence. Good times.

Bill Simmons
  (1:18 PM)

I watched the whole game and enjoyed it, although it was heavily edited and came on at a ridiculous hour on the East Coast. James Denton was otherworldy, it's like someone said to him beforehand, "Aren't you the dude on that show with all the chicks?" and he just kinda snapped. I was disappointed that Dane Cook didn't wear a Yankees hat though.

Sam (Austin, TX)

Basketball Reference shows Rashard Lewis has a .002 Hall of Fame probabilty, plus he scored 2 points in his one all star appearance. Of course he gets max money.

Jacob (Portland, OR)

Which principal in "The White Shadow" do you prefer: Jim Willis #1 (played by Jason Bernard) or Jim Willis #2 (played by Ed Bernard)? Or did you not notice this, due to the fact that you think all black people look alike?

Bill Simmons
  (1:20 PM)

Glad you brought this up. Jim Willis No. 1 was a really good actor; Jim Willis No. 2 was one of the worst actors in TV history. I never understood why they didn't stick with Jim Willis No. 1. It's never been explained. It's the Rashard Lewis max contract of TV decisions.

Shaun (Hoboken, NJ)

Who started this trend in tennis where you win the championship point, then collapse on the court like you've been shot? Its like a reflex for these guys now, like that's the expected celebration. Can you imagine MJ nailing the winning jumper in the '98 finals, then collapsing on the court and with his head in his hands? Where's the killer instinct? I blame some combination of flopping in soccer and Manu Ginobli.

Bill Simmons
  (1:22 PM)

I'm pretty sure Bjorn Borg started it. Go figure, it was a dude from Sweden. But it's been happening for decades - remember when Agassi's coach was waving for him to fall down right after Agassi won in the early 90's?

morgan, newport beach CA

Would you start Ellsbury over CoCO right now?

Bill Simmons
  (1:24 PM)

Coco has actually been coming on like a freight train... if there was ever a time to trade him, it's right now. I'd love to see them get a really good righty set-up guy for Crisp and something else. We have 2/3rds of a great bullpen in place, we still need that righty power arm, unless Manny Delcarmen can put it together. And he's been throwing in the high-90's, so it's not inconceivable.

Grif (DC)

Federer also has tears running down his face before his knees even hit the ground. It's more like a combination of flopping in soccer, Manu Ginobli, and Oliver McCall.

Doug, Toronto

Shouldn't an NBA player have to have a signature sneaker to receive max money? Or at least be the reason why people go to games? Rashard Lewis is a nobody.

Bill Simmons
  (1:25 PM)

You should either be able to A) sell tickets, B) call yourself one of the best 5-6 people at your position, or C) have two first-class NBA skills. You know who's kicking himself right now? Mike Miller. If Rashard is worth $126 million, he's worth at least $110.

Chris (Orlando, FL)

What are the odds of having The BS Report on ESPN Radio from 1pm-4pm in about 1 month?

Bill Simmons
  (1:27 PM)

Zero. I'm not good enough and I'd never want to do a daily radio show

Bill Simmons
  (1:27 PM)

I really like doing my podcast - think there's some upside potential there, I like that you don't have to take breaks and can just have a conversation with someone for 25-30 minutes.

Bill Simmons
  (1:28 PM)

I don't think there's tremendous upside potential, but there's definitely upside potential. I also like that people canb download them and listen to them on their commute home. I like being part of anyone's subway experience.

Max (Edmonds, WA)

why aren't more people paying attention to the Mariners?

Bill Simmons
  (1:30 PM)

You're right, it's an absolutely amazing sports story. The Sox played them near the end of April and the Mariners looked like the worst team in the league - it looked like they were going to break the records for lowest team OBP and highest team ERA ever. Two months later, the crushed the Sox in Seattle. I don't get it. It's a bizarre team.

Randy (Norfolk, VA)

Is the Sports Gal gonna be giving her NFL picks next season?

Bill Simmons
  (1:32 PM)

She's on the fence. Right now, I'd say no - but we were watching a commercial with the model who was in the tsunami last week and she got all fired up about it... I won't spoil the rant, but now I'm thinking she has another 17 weeks of them in her.

Will (Milwaukee)

Are you running a hail mary from Brady to Moss on the first play of Madden 2008?

Bill Simmons
  (1:33 PM)

There's no doubt. It's a mortal lock.

Albert Pujols (St. Louis, MO)

Will you put me in the All Star game, please????

Scott (Jacksonville, FL)

Which NFL team has the most potential to make a New Orleansesque leap from out of nowhere this upcoming season?

Bill Simmons
  (1:35 PM)

I am just starting to do my research for the season... looks like the 49ers are going to be the bandwagon sleeper team, so it can't be them. It's a great question. If anyone has any ideas, post them. I don't think I've ever been more excited for an NFL season... between the Pats and a long overdue revamping of my West Coast fantasy league, I am beside myself.

Fountain ( Denver, CO)

How do you think Madden will translate to the Wii? I am hoping to lose 10 LBs with it

Bill Simmons
  (1:35 PM)

I played the Wii for the first time last week... let's just say that there might be a column coming soon. Wow.

Slouzbry Stouvre (Key Key)

Fantasy sleepers for the second half of the baseball season?

Bill Simmons
  (1:36 PM)

I can only give you ones for the AL...

Bill Simmons
  (1:36 PM)

Really like Andrew Miller on the Tigers.

Bill Simmons
  (1:36 PM)

Delcarmen and Crisp on the Red Sox.

Bill Simmons
  (1:37 PM)

Beltre on the Mariners.

Bill Simmons
  (1:37 PM)

I think Howie Kendrick will come on for the Angels, he broke a finger in April right as he was breaking out, and it always takes guys 6-7 weeks to fully bounce back from that, I could see him hitting .350 in the second half.

Bill Simmons
  (1:38 PM)

Marcus Thames on the Tigers looks like he might be coming on.

Bill Simmons
  (1:39 PM)

And the big one - Phil Hughes down the stretch for the Yanks. I'm terrified of him.

Britt (Pensacola, FL)

I woudl say the deep sleeper this year in the NFL is the Detroit Lions because of it's the second year of Martz's system, they drafted a stud at WR and because Kitna said that they were coing to the playoffs.

Bill Simmons
  (1:39 PM)

Sorry, we're not accepting any Lions picks.

Jason (Rochester, NY)

How about fantasy football sleepers? And don't give us the "it's still two months away" know you are already going to the mattresses on this one...

Bill Simmons
  (1:39 PM)

Two words: Wes Welker!

Collin, Rockford, IL

Fantasy Sleeper second half: Josh Fields, 3B White Sox. With Crede out for the season, this guy's finally gonna get to show what he can do. Trust me.

Bill Simmons
  (1:41 PM)

I'm with you on that one. I also like Billy Butler on KC.

Derek (Derry, NH)

I'd say the buffalo bills will be a sleeper this year... to anyone who watches their games

David, LA

I need a new book, I read looseballs and loved it. what comes next on your list? (preferably nba oriented)

Bill Simmons
  (1:42 PM)

Hmmmmmm. Hold on, lemme check the bargain rack at Amazon.

Bill Simmons
  (1:43 PM)

Website loading slow, I'll come back to this...

Andrew (KC)

What about Alex Gordon in KC? He had a horrid first two months, but he hit around .340 in June, and has really cut down the errors.

Bill Simmons
  (1:44 PM)

I've been following him... he's not really a sleeper though, everyone loved him heading into the season.

Mark (Whittier, CA)

Does Denver count as a sleeper? Norv Turner's going to implode San Diego, Kansas City is riding Larry Johnson like Barbaro (intentional comparison.) The Raiders are the Raiders. The are only 3 games on their schedule that are scary: Indy, Chicago, SD in SD. The Broncos could go 13-3.

Bill Simmons
  (1:45 PM)

It's a great point. If you're a Broncos fan, you have to be delighted by basically everything that happened in the off-season (Darrent Williams excepted, obviously). Norv will kill SD, KC will stink and Oakland is Oakland, as you said. I couldn't be happier with how the Chargers thing played out...

Andrew (KC)

Bill, how great would it be if the Chiefs buckled and signed Johnson to a huge deal, then ran him 400 more times, and his ACL just explodes in 2008? Would that be enough for Carl Peterson to be run out of town? I mean, who has had more time than him, and done less? It's staggering.

Bill Simmons
  (1:46 PM)

Wait... you're making it seem like this isn't exactly how the whole thing will play out.

Jono (Atlanta, GA)

How about the Falcons as a sleeper? I'm envisioning Vick bouncing back from this controversy and becoming the passer we all knew he would be. Anyone with me? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Bill Simmons
  (1:47 PM)

Let's just say that Vick going to the slammer and some random backup QB taking over is REEKING of Ewing Theory potential.

Johnny (Rochester, NY)

Hey speaking of the Chiefs, what about Hard Knocks coming back this season!

Bill Simmons
  (1:49 PM)

Herm Edwards, HBO... it's too good to be true. Hard to believe it's been six years since the first one on the Ravens... I had been writing full-time for ESPN for a month, I did a running diary of Episode One and the editors hacked it to smithereens, they took out about 10 jokes and I spent the weekend thinking I was going to quit. I'm still bitter about it. That was the summer when they destroyed by Gold Club Trial column as well. You'll get all the details in my "E True Hollywood Story" episode.

Noah (Evanston, Illinois)

Can the Bears be counted as sleeper for the SB? Everyone was so down on them last year, and now that we have Mike Brown and Tommie Harris back and are in talks with Briggs, why couldn't they have another dominant season?

Bill Simmons
  (1:50 PM)

I'm thinking the opposite - they have 6-10 written all over them. Aren't they relying on Super Rex and Ced Benson or did something change?

Rich (Parsippany, NJ)

What is worse... The Rashard Lewis contract or having a 40 year old playing an 18 year old karate champion in movie with a millionaire businessman taking time off from his company to ruin an 18 year old karate champion's life?

Bill Simmons
  (1:50 PM)

The Rashard Lewis contract.

Will (Milwaukee)

Joey Harrington is "some random backup" in Atlanta.

Bill Simmons
  (1:51 PM)

Well, there you go. The 2008 Falcons have officially been eliminated from the Ewing Theory.

Jeremy (Eugene, OR)

Thoughts on UFC getting on HBO according to Dana White?

Bill Simmons
  (1:51 PM)

I am crossing my fingers.

Mark, Worcester

Bill, your NBA draft diary was weak; ordinarily, the diary is your best work; you seemed to lack inspiration; was it the Celts trading for Ray Allen that sapped the will to live from you?

Bill Simmons
  (1:54 PM)

I agree with you - it was the worst one I've written since 2003. There were two probs. First, I used up too much material in the interactive thingie with Chad the day before - it was a mistake to do that. And second, I was legitimately enraged by the Allen trade, it ruined my diary. Even when I handed it in, I knew it. So I've been thinking about going back and re-writing it... it's my favorite column to write and the Celtics basically ruined it by making a panic trade. I deserve a mulligan.

Dave (San Diego)

You just going to make a comment about being happy how things played out for the Chargers and not explain what you mean? What the hell have the Chargers done to you?

Bill Simmons
  (1:55 PM)

I was happy because SD has the most talent in the conference other than the Pats - basically, that advantage has now been negated by Norv Turner. It's like competing with one other guy for the hottest girl in high school, then learning that the other guy got VD in Aruba.

Kevin (Baltimore, MD)

Football Sleeper - The New York Giants. Tiki is retired, everyone is counting them out because it is all on Manning's shoulders. Brandon Jacobs will be a feature back and Eli will finally have his breakthrough year!

Bill Simmons
  (1:56 PM)

I like everything but the Eli part. He's the new Frank Stallone.

Mike: NY, NY

Joe Buck and Tim McCarver last night were high comedy. Take one example where McCarver says it's amazing how much power Soriano can generate from a 160lb frame - it's not so amazing as he's actually 20lbs heavier. This comment led to a dead silence on Buck's part before returning to the show. Why does McCarver have a job?

Bill Simmons
  (1:57 PM)

I... I... I don't know.

Mike Auge (Yellowknife, NT, Canada)

If Norv Turner's VD, what does that make Art Shell?

Bill Simmons
  (1:57 PM)

Lyme's disease.

Mike (Annapolis, MD)

What video game system do you recommend if my criteria are that it needs to be Hi Def, and I'm only going to use if for Madden?

Bill Simmons
  (1:59 PM)

I remain happy with my PS3, especially since the Blu-Ray is going to win the battle for the future of HD Dvd's. I played "Ice Age" on Blu-Ray for my kid last week and she didn't move for 90 straight minutes - she looked like Art Shell.

Mike (Hudson, MI)

Watching any new shows for the summer? I have a show for you to start watching. Flight of the Conchords, it airs on HBO on sunday nights at 10:30. It is really funny.

Bill Simmons
  (2:00 PM)

I liked it, didn't love it. Seems like one of those shows where you need to be stoned to fully enjoy it. I don't have a favorite summer show... been watching "Rescue Me" and I'm about to jump into "Friday Night Lights." I'm using the summer to catch up on shows I should have watched last season.

Petey (LA)

Your thoughts on what Presti has done in Seattle so far? The guy is looking like a genius.

Bill Simmons
  (2:03 PM)

Very intrigued so far. I loved the Allen trade for them, although I would have taken Brewer instead of Green. We could be headed for a different NBA - there's been 3 GM's over the past year who seem to know what they're doing (Steve Kerr, Presti and Daryl Morey)

Portland, OR

How great would of been to be at Jose Canseco's table at the WSOP? Could you imagine how out of control his tick would of been? Can we please find footage of his entire day of play. Pure comedy!

Darrell (Willow Grove, PA)

For christ sake, talk about Transformers!!! HAVE YOU SEEN THE DAMN MOVIE OR NOT!?!?!?

Bill Simmons
  (2:04 PM)

Haven't seen it yet. Is it better or worse than the movie Shia LeBoeuf made for Project Greenlight?

Jeff (Toronto, On)

What about the executive of the year out in Toronto? He seems to know what he is doing as well. He has built a contender for the next number of yars has he not?

Bill Simmons
  (2:05 PM)

Yep, forgot about him. Throw in the Spurs GM and we have a whopping FIVE good NBA Gm's right now. That might be the highest number since 1984.

Bill Simmons
  (2:05 PM)

And if you want to count Dumars, six.

Theo Epstein (Boston, MA)

Hey SG, just checking in...anyone I should go after before 7/31?

Bill Simmons
  (2:08 PM)

Three tips: 1. Find us a righty power arm for the bullpen so my season isn't riding on Manny Delcarmen having to strike out Sheffield or A-Rod or Vlad during a big moment in October. 2. Swallow your pride and trade Wily Mo before his value dips into Enron stock territory. 3. Don't trade Clay Buchholz no matter what anyone offers for him. It will kill my Dad. I'm not kidding. The Ray Allen trade has him on the ropes... Buchholz would finish him off.

Andrew (Maryland)

Ernie Grunfeld has to be a good GM as well. He has made some great moves over the past few years, including Kwame and Chucky Atkins for Caron Butler.

Bill Simmons
  (2:09 PM)

Yep, forgot about him. We're up to 7. Nearly 25 percent!

Bert (Weston, CT)

In five years, will we be saying that McRoberts is the Pippen to Oden's Jordan??

Bill Simmons
  (2:09 PM)

I'm gonna say no.

Martin, LA, CA

John Paxson... John Paxson... Took an NBA doormat and made it playoff contender with the best young team in the league

Bill Simmons
  (2:11 PM)

How much credit can someone get for picking in the top-7 every year for 5-6 straight years? I didn't like the Wallace contract and thought he made a huge mistake not rolling over an expiring deal to 2008 so he had enough contracts to trade for KG or Kobe. I can't put him on.

Tony (Denver)

Are you ready to jump off the Kevin Durant bandwagon yet? The guy can't score on Renaldo Balkman in Vegas. 9 for 36 in 2 games. That's a solid 25%...

Bill Simmons
  (2:12 PM)

Yeah, I've given up on him. Those 2 Summer League games proved that he can't make it.

Jon (MD)

You said you didn't want Delcarmen pitching to A-Rod in October, does that mean you think the Yanks are still alive?

Bill Simmons
  (2:16 PM)

Absolutely. I am terrified of them - when Hughes comes back, they go Wang-Clemens-Hughes-Pettitte-Mussina down the stretch... granted, Hughes is a rookie and Mussina has been bad, but it's not unrealistic that all five guys could get it going for a six-week stretch. Plus, they haven't played the "fire Torre for a quick change of tempo boost" card yet.

Mev - Charlestown, MA

old or new sullys?

Bill Simmons
  (2:17 PM)

New Sully's. You can't beat Jack the Bartender.

Derek (Lynchburg, VA)

Bill, you might want to mention the giving up on Durant is sarcasm. People seem to have lost their ability to detect sarcasm. I blame it on Bush.

Lance (Portland, Or)

Kevin Pritchard hasn't done well for the Blazers the last 2 years? Come on, he has obviously done more than Presti. You just like Presti's moves because it landed your beloved Celtics Ray Allen. Otherwise, who would even watch the C's next year?

Bill Simmons
  (2:18 PM)

He's done well but it's much easier to be an NBA GM when your owner allows you to buy first rounders every year and stash guys in Europe. I'd say the degree of difficulty in being the Blazers GM is about a 2 out of 10. It's like having twice as many chips as everyone else at the poker table.

Dave (Secaucus, NJ)

Don't you think that the role of an ombudsman should be applied to all of society? Imagine eating at a McDonalds and on the back of your menu there is a letter written to you detailing how the bathrooms are only cleaned once every three weeks and that 12% of all McFlurries have had a Lee Press-On Nail fall into them. This needs to happen, right?

Bill Simmons
  (2:19 PM)

I wish the Celtics would hire one.

Mike (Seattle WA)

I understand that Corey Brewer would've made an impact on the Sonics, but I still want to know why they passed on Yi.

Bill Simmons
  (2:20 PM)

The thing about Yi - he had more trade value than anyone else at No. 5. I was surprised the Sonics didn't pick him, then try to trade him to GS for the No, 8 and something else.

Turt (Bellevue WA)

What do you think about the proposed deal 100 mill over 5 years for Ichiro?

Bill Simmons
  (2:22 PM)

A ridiculous amount of money for a 33 year old singles hitter. But still, at least he's a really good player - I don't mind when teams overpay for quality players, at the end of the day (as Ric Bucher would say), you'd never regret having Ichiro on your team. Rashard Lewis for $25 million in 2011? You'd regret this.

Cory (Montana)

Is Torii Hunter all but gone from the twins?

Bill Simmons
  (2:23 PM)

I am keeping my fingers crossed for a Crisp/Wily Mo/something else for Hunter trade. It worked in MLB 2007!

Bill (Chicago, IL)

I hate you, Bill, for giving up on '24'. Jack deserved better from you. The most recent season ended in spectacular fashion. Too bad you didn't see it.

Bill Simmons
  (2:24 PM)

I didn't give up on the show, just Season 6. I'm pretending that Season 6 never happened.

Darren Dreifort

Hey, a-hole, don't you dare have a worst contract ever discussion and leave me or Mike Hampton out of it!!!!!

Steve - Toronto, ON

With Schilling, Lowell and Clement (!) coming off the books for nearly 30 million dollars, isn't their a realistic chance that the Red Sox offer A-Rod a massive contract this off-season? I don't see how it doesn't make sense. Kind of like the Damon situation, but in reverse.

Bill Simmons
  (2:25 PM)

Just realistic enough that I threw up on myself.

Daniel (Denver, CO)

Last night Tim McCarver explained to me at the top of the 2nd inning that a catcher cannot practice his swing while he's on the field catching. Do you think baseball announcers can practice for the onset of dementia while they are announcing games?

Billy (Baton Rouge, LA)

Bill, Is it me, or is there just a weird vibe trying to watch the WWE since the Benoit murder/suicide? With the spotlight shining on all the wrestlers that have passed, the whole business just seems more shady than it already did.

Bill Simmons
  (2:28 PM)

It's the worst "sports story" (if you consider wrestling a sport) of all-time. I don't see the WWE recovering, as I wrote 2 weeks ago. But it was amazing to watch all appeareances from washed-up wrestlers on those Nancy Grace/Fox News type shows... seeing the Ultimate Warrior without makeup arguing on a cable channel re-run at 12:30 am at night is really a level of comedy that has never been approached.

Bill (Chicago, IL)

As I see it, Orlando dodged a close one. With Grant Hill's ankle finally off the books, they were legitimately at risk of fielding an '07-'08 team with *no* franchise-crippling long-term contracts. That's not Orlando Magic basketball. Glad they got back to basics with this Lewis deal.

Damian (Hong Kong)

Hey Bill, what did you think of the Raptors signing Kapono for the MLE? Think he'll fit into their system?

Bill Simmons
  (2:31 PM)

That was awful. The fact that Kapono, Matt Carroll and Luke Walton signed for a combined $81 million tells you everything you need to know about trhe NBA this summer. I like all three of those guys, but they're role players... you can't overpay role players, it's the biggest mistake you can make other than spending $126 million on a one-dimensonal scorer.

Michael (DC)

How have you not said a word yet about the Hot Dog Eatting on the 4th of July. If that wasn't a 9.5 or higher on the unintentional comedy scale, what is?

Bill Simmons
  (2:34 PM)

I would love to watch a show that explains how these guys can swallow that much food while shoving more food in their mouth and chewing it. Seriously, I'd love to see a show with computer graphics that shows the inside of their mouths, their jaws, their stomachs and esophaguses and how the food gets processed to the point that it can be swallowed. It's absolutely amazing. And what would happen if someone choked to death during the contest? Has this happened and we just never read about it? Why wouldn't it happen all the time?

Ira (Jacksonsmell, FL)

Sleeper NFL team - Minnesota. Awful division, great draft and 2nd year with that o-line of maulers and best d-line around. I have them as a lock for the NFC divisonal round. Also, Jets are 7 wins max this year, they had a ridiculously easy schedule last year and were no better than Buffalo.

Bill Simmons
  (2:35 PM)

The Vikes are intriguing... although anyone who watched Tavaris Jackson on that Thursday night game last December can't fathom how he's involved in the QB race for them. Maybe they'll hand off to Peterson 40 times a game. I agree though, they look intriguing.

Will (SD, California)

Your take on the Ravens heading into '07 season....go! (and please spare me the "it doesn't matter b/c the pats are going to win the conference anyway" routine)

Bill Simmons
  (2:36 PM)

I'm scared of them. Loved the Lewis-McGahee upgrade. They are a top-3 AFC team - I thought Lewis was awful last year.

Andrew (New York, NY)

So you're just not going to comment on LaRussa's arrogance and/or stupidity and/or selfishness costing the NL home field?

Bill Simmons
  (2:38 PM)

What else can you say? It was bizarre and indefensible. I feel like he's about 3 more weeks from staggering around San Diego with a beard and a carton of hot milk like Ron Burgundy.

Brad (NJ)

Who do you like in the WNBA All-Star game?

Bill Simmons
  (2:38 PM)

Any other channel.

Clinton (Indianapolis)

Bill, do you think the Colts lost too many people in the offseason to repeat?

Bill Simmons
  (2:39 PM)

I do. They were right on the brink for the last 3 years and now it's happened - they lost too many guys. But who cares? You won the SB. You get a 5-year grace period.

Jeff (Tulsa, OK)

Bill- Can you share your thoughts on the new Die Hard? With a decent plot and action scenes it was ruined by the PG-13 rating meaning Mclaine couldn't say his trademark line. Also, is it possible to watch Die Hard and not laugh after seeing this Ben Stiller Show skit.

Bill Simmons
  (2:40 PM)

I saw it the day of the NBA Draft. I feel the same way about Bruce Willis that I do about Ray Allen - he's a big name, he's bald, he's old, and he's not really a movie star anymore.

Drew (FL)

STEVE KERR has been GM for 2 MONTHS, and he gets more credit than Paxson because he's sold his draft picks off and "convinced" Grant Hill to sign for the league minimum? You're right THAT guy is a genius. How about evaluating the draft picks that went right after Deng, Gordon, Hinrich, Thomas, Sefolosha, Duhon and compare them to what Paxson got. He's been able to identify the best player available consistently. That's worth something even if you dont like the Wallace signing, which was front-loaded (intelligently) or not trading their best young asset for Pau "I cant win a game in the playoffs" Gasol. At least more than a guy who's done the job for 2 months.... c'mon Sports Guy

Bill Simmons
  (2:42 PM)

I think Kerr is going to be a GREAT general manager. In fact, if he fails, then I will have no hope for the position at all. he's in an impossible spot - his owner won't pay the luxury tax and he has to cho $9 million off his payroll. That team has basically given away four first rounders (including the Deng pick) and gotten nothing for them. he has a lotta work ahead. But I think he'll be good. The Grant Hill signing was superb.

Tony (Jersey)

I am dead, everyone get on with your lives.

Bill Simmons
  (2:43 PM)

If you're dead, then who killed you? That's the question nobody has been able to answer. Phil Leotardo is dead, you eliminated all your competition... who was left that wanted you dead? I've yet to hear this answered.

Jake Shuttlesworth (Attica State Pen)

How dare you...

John (Pittsburgh, PA)

If you want WWE high comedy watch Dan Abrams on MSNBC his resident expert on the WWE is Marc "Bad Boy" Mero. Like you couldn't find a more relevant washed up Superstar jonesing for one last chance on T.V.? I think all wrestlers going on shows to give serious perspective should do so in character. Can't you just see Mick Foley on talking about the rampant steriod abuse with his hand in a white athletic sock as Mankind? I feel like the message would be a lot more poignant.

Bill Simmons
  (2:44 PM)

Couldn't agree more. Marc Mero kills me... he looks like Little Richard. Although I do like his idea for a wrestling off-season, I think that would solve at least 4 of the 200 problems with the WWE right now.

Justin (Nowhere, TN)

Sleeper team: Washington. Seriously. Everyone else in that division is overrated, Jason Campbell is a very good quarterback, and you could conceive of Gibbs pulling it together. Alright, maybe I'm just grasping at straws.

Bill Simmons
  (2:45 PM)

Interesting... they're on my list. Remember, the key to a sleeper is that NOBODY can be calling them a sleeper right before the season starts.

Joe (Wake Forest University)

What would be a bigger blow to American morale: not winning the 08 olympic gold in basketball again, or find out that Joey Chestnut was on performance enhancing drugs for competitive eating (whatever they are)

Bill Simmons
  (2:46 PM)

Chesntnut being on drugs would cripple this nation like Watergate did. It would take us years to recover.

Michael (Boston, MA)

Sleeper team: The Browns. Made you look!

Bill Simmons
  (2:47 PM)

Yes, they fir the sleeper bill... can't imagine anyone making a great case for them.

Mike (Washington, D.C.)

I brought up the Sopranos finale yesterday with some coworkers at lunch, and they were all still incredibly angry and bitter about it. The consensus was that if Chase killed Tony off (which they all agreed now seemed certain), that he wronged the fans by not letting them see Tony get whacked. I didn't get that, so I wanted to know your take. Why do people need to see Tony lying in a pool of his own blood to feel vindicated?

Bill Simmons
  (2:48 PM)

People are angry because nobody wanted one of the greatest TV series ever to end with a moment that made you think your cable accidentally went out. The last few seconds were executed poorly. Everything else about that scene was outstanding.

Shane (San Francisco)

Any inside info on the Garnett trade rumors?? Is he going to Golden State??

Bill Simmons
  (2:52 PM)

They make the most sense because they have a gigantic trade exception that could be used to absorb one of Minny's bad contracts (like Mark Blount or Marko Jaric). For instance, they could trade Al Harrington, Saranus's expiring deal, Brandan Wright, Patrick O'Bryant and either Biedrins or Ellis for KG, then make a separate deal in which they absorb the Blount contract for a 2nd round pick. And they'd still have enough left (Davis, Jackson, Ellis or Biedrins, Pietrus, the Italian kid, a FA signing) to contend with KG. The Warriors make the most sense.

JC (Athens, OH)

Any word on the bargain Amazon books?

Bill Simmons
  (2:53 PM)

Couldn't find a good one. I'll look through Amazon tonight and try to find a coupla good ones for the next chat.

Travis Diener

I could take you....

Boose (Louisville, KY)

BSG, what are you most excited about at the ESPY's tonight?

Bill Simmons
  (2:55 PM)

I'm excited for Chris Berman and Jamie-Lynn Sigler presenting together, and I'm really excited to see if Jimmy uses the joke I wrote for that situation.

Charles (Houston)

Sleeper team: Houston. Relatively new coach. Stronger defense (Healthy Mario Williams, Demeco Ryans, Amobi Okeye). New QB. Andre Johnson. Musical chairs as far as running backs heading into the season. Speedy receiver/kick returner from the draft in Jacoby Jones. Swept Jacksonville and split with Indy last year. Weaker division this year in comparison. Maybe? Too much to ask for?

Bill Simmons
  (2:56 PM)

Hmmmmmm... it's not unreasonable.

Ryan (Valhalla, NY)

What would performance enhancing drugs at the Hot Dog Eating contest consist of...weed? I know when I get high I think I can eat 50 hot dogs.

Bill Simmons
  (2:56 PM)

That's an excellent point. The only problem is that you might stop eating halfway through because you became fascinated by one of the street lights.

Colin (DC)

So is the KG to the Suns deal all but squashed?

Bill Simmons
  (2:58 PM)

Yeah, it's cooked. The problem is that it's much more complicated to waive trade kickers than people realize - they count against the luxury tax even if they're waived, although I think you can spread it over 2 years. So for Phoenix, KG would count something like $26 million for tax purposes... it just can't work, they're already too far over.

Charlie (New York, NY)

I know the Niners are picked by everyone to be the sleeper but unless Smith really implodes, this is probably the first time I agree with the consensus, I mean they got a great coach, great draft, much improved defense and Frank Gore, thats gotta be good enough to win the West, right?

Bill Simmons
  (2:59 PM)

See, they look too logical on paper. I feel like this could be the year where one of Frank Gore's kneecaps actually comes off his body and lands 10 yards away.

Eric (Denver)

Will everyone please stop sending in KG questions? It either freezes the ESPN server or SG's brain for like 5 minutes each time.

Bill Simmons
  (3:00 PM)

That's a great point. No more KG questions. I should also be banned from using the trade chec ker, that thing is to me what a porn site is to Charlie Sheen.

chris (worcester, ma)

What is the ettiquete when you and your boss leave your respective stalls at the same time? I ask because this just happened to me. To make it worse, my boss didn't have a clean go.

Bill Simmons
  (3:01 PM)

I think it's a nod, then 10 seconds of awkward silence. That's the only move.

O-Fizzle (Middle Village, NY)

SG, if the Red Sox reach the WS this year, it would mean that Terry Francona would manage the AL squad at next year's ASG, which is being held in Yankee Stadium (for the last time in The House That Ruth Built). What are the chances that Francona leaves Joe Torre off the bench coach/assistant managers role for the game. I don't think he has the guts.

Bill Simmons
  (3:02 PM)

That question may have set the record for someone getting ahead of himself.

Ryan (Ottawa)

Other items the 'Tony is dead' crowd haven't answered: 1) Why would the Members Only guy go to the washroom before shooting Tony? In the Godfather, Michael went because he couldn't carry the gun on him and the restaurant had been identified. Neither of those things are true here. Plus, every hit in the Sopranos universe has the shooter come in guns blazing. 2) As for Tony's 'everything goes black' line to Bobby about getting killed... it sure didn't look like that was the case when we saw Bacala get shot a couple dozen times while buying his train. 3) If they made a movie and Tony was alive, could anyone complain?

Jamie (Toronto, Ontario)

I'm here watching Miami Vice on cable and realizing just how bad the movie version was. What way do you think they should have gone with it? Make it more like an episode of the old series? Brought in more than one good actor (Jamie Foxx)?

Bill Simmons
  (3:05 PM)

It's funny, I keep getting sucked in - it's such a well-filmed movie and yet, it's so horribly acted... plus, Cinemax is basically showing it 24 hours a day. Also, everything about Colin Farrell kills me in this movie... the mustache, the goofy expressions during the sex scene, the lack of chemistry with Jamie Foxx, the speedboat scene... it's almost unparalleled.

JOE (Atlanta)

Have Kobe-KG trade rumors become the 2007 version of "Barbaro Health Update" story that goes nowhere?

Bill Simmons
  (3:06 PM)

Pretty much.

Shalin, NYC

Hey SG. How do feel about ruining Alton's career? Ever since his appearance on the BS Report, he lost his total dominance in the RW/RR challenege and in Reunited: Vegas, he looks dumber than Peter King's annual Super Bowl predictions.

Bill Simmons
  (3:07 PM)

It's really a toss-up between him and Manny Ramirez for "Biggest No-Show in 2007." Alton was AWFUL in the RW/RR challenge and then he went and insulted the Jews. That's a bad combo.

Mike(Long Island, NY)

How are you taking your afternoons without the continuous babel of Mike and the Mad Dog?

Bill Simmons
  (3:08 PM)

I heard Mike took two months off to have 10 pounds of caramel-colored coating from Diet Coke sodas removed from his veins. Is this true?

Josh (Green Bay, WI)

You want a case for Cleveland? Here it is: Brady Quinn is more NFL-ready than most rookies because he worked in Charlie Weis' pro-style offense at ND. Braylon Edwards could be Colston-esque this year...we know he's talented as all get out, he just needs to show it. Joe Jurevicius has done enough in the past to garner some respect by opposing defenses (deserved or not). Kellen Winslow will be HUGE in a full slate of NFL games with a competent QB. Romeo Crennel is a good coach, he's just had a crappy team. Jamal Lewis is an upgrade over Reuben Droughns, giving the Browns a decent running back for once.

Josh (Sheboygan, WI)

BSG you've been a supporter of Milwaukee as a city for years now, what are your thoughts on Yi Jianlian not wanting to come here?

Bill Simmons
  (3:09 PM)

Obviously, I'm outraged. How dare he insult the good people of Wisconsin! He's like a more sinister, meaner Darko Milicic.

Ryan (Chicago)

Which basketball 'Moneyball' statistics do you put the most weight in?

Bill Simmons
  (3:12 PM)

Hollinger's PER rating is interesting... ultinmately, you never want to judge an NBA player on stats alone. It's useful for the larger discussion, but that's it - you can't use stats to judge how someone makes his teammates better, or how someone keeps the locker room happy, or how someone sublimates his own game for the team. For instance, Isiah's stats were down when the Pistons won their 2 titles, but they were down because he was consciously trying to get everyone else involved. Stats can't reflect this.

Darren (Charlotte, NC)

Other than a topless scene long overdue, has Jessica Alba become Heather Graham? Insanely hot actress who made it big but couldn't act their way out of a wet sack?

Bill Simmons
  (3:13 PM)

Absolutely. Although Heather Graham was smart enough to start taking her top off to extend her shelf life. Alba isn't there yet.

Justin (Austin, TX)

What do you think of the ESPN ombudsman's work? Have you read it?

Bill Simmons
  (3:14 PM)

Love it, she's tremendous. Huge upgrade over the last one. Really good writer and very candid.

Pat (Mashpee, MA)

I've sent this like 10 times and I want your take on this: Would you rather the Celtics sign Magloire, trade for Camby, or do neither?

Bill Simmons
  (3:18 PM)

They're not getting Camby. They have no real trade chips other than future picks and Theo Ratliff's contract, and that contract isn't going to have value until February when teams only have to pay a portion of it. They're trying to sell the "we're not done" card and I just don't believe them. If I'm wrong, so be it. But if the Celtics were honestly trying to make a run with Allen-Pierce-Jefferson in 2008, why haven't they been courting any free agents, and what big contracts guys are out there that they can actually get? I love Rondo's potential, but he made about 35 turnovers in the Spurs summer league game - it's going to take him another 2 years to become a consistently good NBA point guard. I just don't get it. It's like two rosters in one roster - three players who can be part of a contender, surrounded by a bunch of young guys who aren't remotely ready to have an impact in the playoffs, and a coach with a .467 winning percentage. it makes me crazy. I can't talk about them.

Renato, Astoria, NY

I'd love to finally see my name on a chat trasncript. That would be my Sportscenter "My Wish" dream. Make it happen, SG, make it happen. W/O Chris Connelly of course.

David (Houston, TX)

Good fights coming this year....BHop/Wink, Taylor/Pavlick, Mayweather/Hatton trying to get made for Nov, Pacman/Barrera, Calzaghe/Kessler, Cotto/Margarito (if Margo wins this weekend)

Matt Geer (Phoenix)

Is there any way you could convince the honchos as ESPN to give us some more Yankees coverage. It terrible that the biggest team in all of sports can't get any airtime on the WWL.

Paul, Portland, Maine

I signed on late and am catching up - saw your comment about how trading Buchholz would kill your Dad. Your Dad is right on that. I have seen Buchholz live and he has "the look." He would help the Sox right now. Why doesn't anyone mention their need for more offense or a bench upgrade?

Bill Simmons
  (3:20 PM)

My Dad is almost stalking Buchholz at this point - I think he even knows how to go online to look at his box scores. He's watched every Pawtucket start they've shown on NESN. He's claiming that he hasn't been this confident about a young Sox starter since Clemens. I have no opinion, I've never seen him pitch.

Joe (Columbia, SC)

Is Chris Berman ready to come back and do highlights of Kevin Hungry Like a Wolf Durant Durant?

Brendan (Buffalo)

Is Bucholz more NOW?

Bill Simmons
  (3:21 PM)

I think he is.

Danny Ainge (Boston)

We're never done. I might just trade Al Jefferson for Marcus Camby straight-up just to prove that we aren't done.

Jamie (Austin, TX)

So you see Deja Vu on Lottery Day, then Die Hard on Draft Day? Nice job, Simmons!

Bill Simmons
  (3:22 PM)

You're right... I'm an idiot. I should have known.

ike (atlanta)

wait wait wait... you criticize Rondo's stats in the summerleague as a sign that he has a long way to go, yet you dismiss awful performances by your boy KD... which is it, billy boy?

Bill Simmons
  (3:23 PM)

No no no... the point is, Rondo is really talented, and I think he's headed for great things, but to expect him to be consistently good on a contending team when he can't make a jumpshot and he's careless with the ball is absolutely insane.

ezzy (Costa Mesa)

I fixed Matt's question for him... Matt Geer (Phoenix): Is there any way you could convince the honchos as ESPN to give us some more Yankees coverage. It terrible that a sub .500 team with the biggest payroll in all of sports can't get any airtime on the WWL.

Chris (Philadelphia)

On a day when there are no major professional sporting events taking place, why wouldn't ESPN show the ESPY's live on one of their 14 channels instead of playing it on Saturday night when most sports fans will be either watching a game, going to a game, or drinking somewhere?

Bill Simmons
  (3:24 PM)

That's a great question. We're the same network that premiered a $15 million miniseries aftrer a live event that ended up coming on at 11:05 pm on the East Coast. So I don't know what to tell you.

Greg Oden( Portland, OR)

Anybody got any ice cream?? My throat kinda hurts here..

T.Sak Aiea, HI

If you had to choose, what 9-5 job would you do?

Bill Simmons
  (3:27 PM)

I'd want to trade stocks - it's just like gambling, only more accepted as a reasonable profession.

Daniel Artest (David Stern's nightmares)

Please tell me you read the Washington Post article about me?? I think getting a second Artest in the Association is David Stern's 9th Circle of Hell

Bill Simmons
  (3:29 PM)

Wrapping this up soon... just giving you fair warning. When we end the chat, it jumps to Insider for a few minutes until they switch it over to non-Insider.

Joe (Tallahassee, FL)

Is there such a thing as ESPN-Classic, On-Demand? Imagine being able to watch last year's Fiesta Bowl or the Red Sox 2004 playoff run in its entirety, at any moment you want...

Love this idea. I feel like they haven't quite figured out the On Demand thing... why can I watch every episode of "Sons of Hollywood" On Demand, but I can't watch any of "Friday Night Lights?" That reminds me, at last night's ESPY's - the celeb highlight was the agent from "Sons of Hollywood" walking around with the same brisk speed that he walks around on the show, when he's always two steps ahead of the person with him, with his chest sticking out, looking straight ahead with an intense look on his face. Also, he's about 5-foot-7. That guy killed me. I wish he was presenting at the ESPY's tonight.

One last thing: I started working on a book last week and ESPN has been gracious enough to let me cut back on the columns in July and August so I can work on it. Still doing the podcasts every week, still writing the mag column every 2 weeks, living the door open for 2-3 more columns for the website, but other than that, I have to start cranking out this book or I'll never write end up writing it.

So I'm not going away completely, but until the first week of the NFL season, I'm not going to be around that much. Please don't take it personally, I'm a terrible multitasker, I really want to throw myself into this book for 7-8 weeks and bang out most of it so I can go back to a full-time schedule for the website/magazine by Week 1 of the NFL season.

The other good thing is that we're finally revamping the SG World page over that break and turning it into something that you'd want to visit every day, instead of a glorified archives page. So just be patient for the next few weeks and when Week 1 of the NFL season rolls around, everything will be back to normal (and even better than before).

Anyway, thanks for all the questions - nearly 39,000 in all! Back tomorrow with the podcast... enjoy the rest of the worst sports day of the year!
