Fantasy Football with Scott Engel

Jack (Phx, AZ)

If Joey Harrington has to start at QB because of the Vick situation, do you see Atlanta running the ball more then passing?

Scott Engel
  (3:02 PM)

Good afternoon everyone! I think they would throw a little more since Harrington is more of a dropback type and is no threat to run. Still, it wouldn't help the Atlanta WRs much in terms of value

Brad: (Los Angeles, CA.)

Scott, thanks for all your help for the upcoming season! Who do I pick in Rd's 2 and 3? I know you don't like preset strategies, but I'm tempted to go 3 RB's in a row. Is that crazy?

Scott Engel
  (3:04 PM)

I would only do that if you start a flex, but again, I would be ready to adjust on the run instead of sticking firmly to a preset strategy. You can use it as a guideline but don't be afriad to stray from it

Scott (Grayling, MI)

Who do you like better as a #1 RB in a PPR league? Maroney, Westbrook, Parker, Henry or McGahee?

Scott Engel
  (3:06 PM)

Westbrook for sure - he is a proven top RB in PPR formats

In a league that starts 2 qb's do you see Kitna as an above average #2 qb?

Scott Engel
  (3:07 PM)

In that format I think he will serve you very well, but some may overrate him and use him as a No. 1

R.L. (College Park, MD)

Do you see Shaun Alexander returning to form this year? The guy only had one off year (which you can attribute to the Madden curse), and he still gets to play St. Louis, San Fran, and Arizona six times. Worthy of the 3rd or 4th overall pick?

Scott Engel
  (3:08 PM)

Definitely. His foot has had ample time to heal more and he should return to being a very good RB - not 2005 numbers, but worth No. 4 overall

Gabe (Birmingham)

How early would you draft Vick if by the season's start he is still on the team?

Scott Engel
  (3:09 PM)

I would personally avoid him and let him be someone else's worry, unless he falls too far to me in the later rounds

Patrick (D.C.)

Do I go hard after Calvin Johnson in my draft or is he not worth it?

Scott Engel
  (3:12 PM)

I don't know how you can "go hard" after him unless its an auction. I would pick him in the sixth round or so if he is there and I need a WR, but I wouldn't go into my draft determined to get him - take him if he is there, but there might be more proven Wrs available when you are thinking about him as well

Chase (Indiana, PA)

Im in an 8-team league we start 1QB(6pts. td), 2RB 3WR 1TE 1D/ST. Do you think i should draft QB 2nd round because of the depth of Rb this yr and b/c of 6 pt passing tds?

Scott Engel
  (3:13 PM)

No - you only start one and have to fill five starting slots at RB and WR - unless you can get Peyton early, wait

Matt (Philadelphia)

Keeper league...I have depth at RB with Westbrook, Henry, and Deuce. I have 3 young RBs behind them in Norwood, Jacobs, and Brandon Jackson. Which one should I trade to help out my receiver situation right now? Which of these three has the best long term value?

Scott Engel
  (3:15 PM)

I think Jacobs and Jackson have a lot of upside - see which one brings you the best value in return.

Jay (MI)

With Vernon Davis being pegged to have a breakout year, when is a safe time to grab him to not get him at too high a cost but before he would generally be taken?

Scott Engel
  (3:16 PM)

If you still have a TE need in the sixth round of a 10 or 12 team league, I would go for him at that point

Chris (MA)

Scott - for the love of god someone answer this question....4 out of my first 5 picks were L.T,McGahee,Palmer, and you think that a WR core of Plaxico,Glenn,Stallworth,Jennings and Bennett be serviceable enough to win or should i trade one of my guns for a top tier WR??

Scott Engel
  (3:18 PM)

I think you need a more dependable second receiver next to Plaxico

chuck, austin

while everyone else grabs manning, brees, brady, palmer, mcnabb and so on...i am gonna wait and get romo later. he is gonna have a huge year. agreed?

Scott Engel
  (3:19 PM)

I wouldn't bank on getting him, because you never know for sure if someone else will get him or if a better passer will drop to you beforehand - I would take Romo if he is there in the seventh or so, but have other alternatives ready and back him up with another solid backup a round or two later

G (Chicago)

Scott, i have the third pick in a 14 team league, snake draft. Are you a proponent of taking a top WR in the 2nd in a scenario like mine?

Scott Engel
  (3:22 PM)

I think the top Rbs will fly off the board and youll have to take one with the seond or third pick. There will not be too many picks between your second and third rounders, so just get one RB and a top WR with those choices

Jason (Indiana)

Do you think that Trent Green will be good QB? My thinking is if I can pick him up in later rounds I can fill my WR and RB's first.

Scott Engel
  (3:23 PM)

I think he is only worth taking as a backup - he's a risk for msising more time if he has another concussion and his WR crew is OK, not great

Brian (Lake Worth, FL)

Is Culpepper worth a gamble in the mid to late rounds to have for my back-up QB? I would assume someone will sign him.

Scott Engel
  (3:24 PM)

Only the late rounds - hes a risky pick and his best scenario is Jacksonville, where the receiving crew is shaky

Bryan (MA)

Maroney or Jones-Drew in a ppr league?

Scott Engel
  (3:25 PM)

I would take MJD - he has already proven he can catch passes out of the backfield and make big plays

guy at work

am i crazy to prefer travis henry to willie parker, mcgahee and gore? i smell a HUGE year for him in denver.

Scott Engel
  (3:26 PM)

I prefer Gore and Parker, who are more versatile and will net more yards from scrimmage

Joe (Madtown)

With Joe Horn out of New Orleans does Devery Henderson have TJ Houshyomama/Reggie Wayne type potential?

Scott Engel
  (3:28 PM)

No - hes not the possession guy that Housh is and he is not as talented as Wayne - hes a big-play type who will have some good outings and is a great third fantasy WR

Alan (Richmond, VA)

What do you make of the RB situation in WAS? They proved they could run with the young QB, but where do you take their RB's and who do you take 1st?

Scott Engel
  (3:30 PM)

I would take Portis first, but considering the durability concerns, he is a fourth rounder to me, and Betts maybe a round later

John, Big D

Scottie, who are your top 10 RBs right now? And while you're at it, how about the top 10 WRs too...

Scott Engel
  (3:32 PM)

RB - LT, Jackson, Gore, LJ, Alexander, Addai, Parker, Westbrook, Henry, McGahee WR - Smith, Harrison, CJ, Holt, Owens, Wayne, Fitz, Colston, Evans, Walker

Kurt (Cleveland, Ohio)

MJD over Maroney? Teams with 2 backs who split carries scare the bejesus out of me!

Scott Engel
  (3:33 PM)

Doesn't matter that MJD shares carries - he makes the most of the less than ideal workload

Jason (Indiana)

How about Reggie Bush this year? What would be a good round to try and target him?

Scott Engel
  (3:34 PM)

I would get him late in the first round if he is there in a 12 team league

David (Washington DC)

How do you feel about taking someone like DJ Hackett this year? Can he be a 3rd WR. Will he be a potential breakout performer. I was really impressed when I watched him play.

Scott Engel
  (3:34 PM)

I've watched Hackett for years and he is going to have some big games in 2007, but inconsistency will be an issue

Alan (Richmond, VA)

I got Hasselbeck in the 7th and Favre in the 11th... I have great depth at RB, should I look for a more reliable QB or is MH gonna bounce back?

Scott Engel
  (3:36 PM)

I think Favre is good insurance - Hasselbeck should rebound this year - a healthy Alexander and better protection as Sims and Spencer improve on the line will mean more time to throw

Are Ced Benson, Thomas Jones and Brandon Jacobs all late second rounders? early third rounders? Take them before elite WR's?

Scott Engel
  (3:38 PM)

I think you can get Jacobs later, as I have seen him slip to rounds four and five in some drafts. I would take Jones in the second round - like him a lot this year - Benson I like better in the third

Roy, Denver

How about Bush, Maroney and what order would you rank those guys?

Scott Engel
  (3:39 PM)

Bush, Brown, Maroney - I am not as high on Maroney as some others are

Nate (Madison)

Do you see Brandon Jackson developing into the main RB in GB?

Scott Engel
  (3:40 PM)

Definitely - he will fit the zone blocking scheme nicley and Morency is better suited to share carries or be a backup

Bryan (Columbus)

Hey Scott - we are switching from a yearly to a keeper league this year. Any thoughts on how we should set up the format?

Scott Engel
  (3:42 PM)

Make sure keepers become effective with this year's draft, not last season's. Two to three max per team is good, with contracts preventing owners having some players for their entire careers

Michael (Pittsburgh)

Scotty, I am keeping Alexander, Bush, Benson and either J. Walker (4th round) or Matt Leinart (10th). I'm leaning towards Walker, as 10/12 teams in my league have already declared a QB as one of their keepers. My thinking is that I can get value (Leinart, Kitna, Hasselbeck, etc.) later while loading up on other positions during the earlier parts of the draft. What's your take?

Scott Engel
  (3:44 PM)

I think Walker is a good value for a fourth rounder and you can retain Leinart or a suitable replacement relatively early in your draft

Jason (Indiana)

Does Ahman Green have any value at all now since hes with the Texans?

Scott Engel
  (3:45 PM)

I think his best days are behind him, the OL is still shaky and the passing game won't take enough focus off him - I think he will be a bust

dan (NYC)

scott...some arguing going on among my keeper league. what is the best way to select draft order? some go by last seasons standings, but we dont keep the same team. others say random is unfair. thanks!

Scott Engel
  (3:46 PM)

I give priority picks to returning teams in reverse order first, then new teams get the last picks in the first round in random order

kris (seattle)

While you're giving us top 10s, how about QBs?

Scott Engel
  (3:48 PM)

Peyton, Palmer, Brady a close third over Brees, Bulger, McNabb, Hasselbeck, Rivers, Romo, Vince Young

aaron (state college, pa)

Keep two...Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, Lee Evans - does Calvin Johnson eat at Roy's numbers enough to warrant keeping Lee?

Scott Engel
  (3:50 PM)

CJ won't hurt Roy - he will draw defensive attention away from him - but I think Evans is more well-rounded and has less of an injury history - I would keep Johnson and Evans

Robby [Canton]

I traded Jericho Cotchery for Calvin Johnson in a keeper. Who has the better end

Scott Engel
  (3:50 PM)

You ripped the other guy off! Cotchery is a solid guy, but CJ is a superstar in the making

Joe (Madtown)

I've started a Public Veto rule in my league. If you veto a trade you have to man up and explain your vote on the message board. Good Rule?

Scott Engel
  (3:51 PM)

I like it - it adds a lot of integrity to your league

jim (portland)

Am I nuts to be considering Gore or Alexander with the 3rd pick? Or is LJ or Jackson the way to go??

Scott Engel
  (3:52 PM)

I think it's Gore - he is coming off as great year and doesn't have any real question marks surrounding him, plus he is versatile

Evan: (Los Angeles)

Forget top 10's, those are easy. Please give us much better value and give us 11-20 of RB's. Now THAT is content we won't find elsewhere.

Scott Engel
  (3:57 PM)

RBs 11-20 - Bush, Rudi, Brown, Deuce, Thomas Jones, Benson, Maroney, MJD, Edge, Jacobs

Larry (Newark,NJ)

Is McAllister's numbers going to regress this year with the emergence of Bush?

Scott Engel
  (3:57 PM)

No - Sean Payton managed to get both of them the ball a lot last year and I see no real reason for that to change

Vito (Cicero, IL)

Why is Palmer 2nd on all the QB rankings? Isn't Brees better?

Scott Engel
  (3:59 PM)

Palmer will throw more TD passes - Brees being third or fourth is no insult and doesn't mean he is not elite, either

tom (portland, or)

After Gates goes...when should a TE be drafted?

Scott Engel
  (4:00 PM)

Gates will usually go in the third, then you will see the other top guys go about two rounds later

Jared (NJ)

Would you take Marshawn Lynch in the 5th round as a 3rd rb?

Scott Engel
  (4:01 PM)

Definitely - perfect spot to get him although some owners might take him earlier

Matt (Oakland)

Can you explaing why you are not high on Maroney? In regular leagues (aka non-PPR), how can you have both Bush and Deuce higher than Maroney?

Scott Engel
  (4:04 PM)

I think Maroney needs establish himself as a better inside runner first and show he can handle an increased workload first - I think he will have some good games, but will not be dependable - Bush will play well for start to finish this year and Deuce is more proven - opportunity doesnt always mean outstanding production - I think Maroney is still a work in progress

Jeremy (Bellevue, Wa)

I think Vito needs to step out FFB for a minute and take a look at Mr Palmer. Isnt he the most likely QB to approach or exceed MR Manning this year? And no not Eli :)

Scott Engel
  (4:06 PM)

If anyone can approach Peyton's totals, it's Palmer - but Peyton is still the standard to be judged by and is clearly No. 1

Dave (Anaheim)

When would you draft Randy Moss in a 10 team league with 3 wr's?

Scott Engel
  (4:07 PM)

With 3 WRs, you put a higher emphasis on the position - fourth is good for Moss

So how does your explanation on Maroney relate to your high rankings on Addai. Granted Indy's offense is a bit better, but aren't they in basically the exact same position?

Scott Engel
  (4:08 PM)

Addai has already established himself, runs better inside, and is more versatile. Not the same player

steve (PA)

gates or housh for my keeper?? 12 team league, other is gore. thanks!!

Scott Engel
  (4:09 PM)

Gates - he puts up very good WR-type numbers and is the clear class of his position

What do you think Alex Smith will do this year and does he worth a late round?

Scott Engel
  (4:11 PM)

We have him projected for numbers similar to last year, but personally, I think he can add a few more TDs with less intereceptions while becoming a more dependable fantasy reserve

Anthony (NYC)

Scott what round should Drew Bennett be drafted in, and does he start ahead of Issac Bruce?

Scott Engel
  (4:12 PM)

Bruce is still the starter for now, but I think Bennett will be a prime red zone target for Bulger and is a great pick in the 10th round or so

Scott (Grayling, MI)

Scott, we started a keeper league last year w/ only 1 keeper. We didn't establish any rules for how long you can keep them. Any suggestions going into this year what guidelines we should now instill in my league in these regards? Thanks!

Scott Engel
  (4:13 PM)

I like three to four-year contracts. You can also consider using a slary cap, which works great - and each year a player is kept, his cost goes up a bit

King, TX

Our 10 team league usually looses 2-3 players each year out of the "new baby", "did not have fun", or "going back to grad school" excuses. This has occured each of the last four years. Now about 7 people want back in with only 1 spot availible this year. How do I as commish deal with this?

Scott Engel
  (4:16 PM)

Well, a new baby seems like a legit reason to me :) I would start a waiting list, or have the excess owners start their own league. I run two leagues that are always in high demand - those on the waiting list can get first chance for the next year or form their own leagues

Tim (ATL)

TJ Housh is still so underrated - wasn't he top-10 last year at season's end? why not this year?

Scott Engel
  (4:17 PM)

Yes, he is underrated - but he is definite top 15 - he doesn't have to be top 10 to be very good - he doesn't have the upside of guys like Evans or Roy, but it's not embarrasing for him to fall just outside the top 10

VP Manhattan

If I take Willie Parker over Addai, will I miss out on what he "might" do as a full time back?

Scott Engel
  (4:18 PM)

No - what he WILL do - Addai is set for a big season in terms of all-around numbers

Derek (Fort Collins CO)

I've been offered Marshawn Lynch for Cadillac Williams who is my 3rd back; is Lynch a steal over Williams' experience?

Scott Engel
  (4:19 PM)

I would do it - Lynch is more versatile and has better TD potential, especially if its a keeper league

Mike (chicago)

Keep ranking em! What about WR's 11-20?

Scott Engel
  (4:23 PM)

WRs 11-20 - Roy, Driver, Housh, Boldin, Plaxico, Moss, Andre Johnson, Hines Ward, Reggie Brown, D-Jax

Joe (Madtown)

Deep Sleeper: Rueben Droughns? Jacobs has never proven he can be a full time back. Rueben has, kind of..

Scott Engel
  (4:24 PM)

Just because Jacobs hasnt done it doesn't mean he cant - he has mor eupside than Droughns and will win the job outright

Anthony (NYC)

Scott what is the earliest one should draft Andre Johnson, considering all te changes happening with the Texans offense?

Scott Engel
  (4:26 PM)

I personally think the changes won't be enough - Ahman's best years are behind him, the line is still not good and there is no No 2 WR to complement AJ - I would not think about him until at least the top 15 other WRs are off the board - he wont be statistically reliable Thanks a lot everyone!
