Fantasy Baseball with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (11:01 AM)

Hello and welcome to what should be an interesting fantasy baseball chat room. Today's the big day, the MLB trade deadline. Let's get going...

Robert (NY)

Eric, tough blow to your Phillies and my fantasy teams with Victorino getting hurt. Any word on how bad? My question is about another fragile player. Does Kerry Wood have any value? Seems like he may be back this week. Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:02 AM)

Yeah, losing Victorion and Michael Bourn isn't real cool. We should find out today how long each is out, and who the Phillies trade for to replace them in right field. Victorino is not fragile, by the way. Even healthy players get hurt. Kerry Wood is fragile. I could see him rejoining the Cubs bullpen soon and being an interesting seventh inning guy. Not much fantasy value, though.

Scott (Richmond)

If the Reds don't move Hatteberg, will we still see Votto this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

I don't expect Scott Hatteberg to get dealt. Votto will probably be up in September, and I'd assume the team plays him then. But who knows? The Reds are an odd team.

Mark (Kearny, NJ)

Eric: Gagne is currently my 3rd closer behind Nathan and Saito. Should I drop Gagne now and pick up Loria (since Dotel is most likely gone)? Or is Gagne staying put?

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

Don't do anything drastic until you actually see some trades today. I think Dotel will move on, and will probably not close in his new home, but it's premature to drop players in fantasy on speculation. Same with Gagne.

Josh (Atlanta)

Any update on Dotel? If he's traded to ATL what does that do to Wickmans fantasy value?

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

This is interesting, because we've heard the Braves are looking for relief help, but is it because Rafael Soriano has struggled, or to replace Wickman? Tough call. If Dotel goes to Atlanta, I would think he's setting Wickman up, but it could be the other way.

Danny (Rockville Centre, NY)

Can you clear up the TB Infield?

Eric Karabell
  (11:07 AM)

It appears the Devil Rays will stick with Carlos Pena and Akinori Iwamura at the corners, with Ben Zobrist at short and Brendan Harris at second base. At some point Evan Longoria will be at third, but probably not until next season,

Alex (Philadelphia)

Victorino is indestructible. He'll be back. But speaking of the Phillies, does Brett Myers and his new theme music get all the save opportunities now that he's back?

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Myers is clearly the closer, and the Phillies made that clear a week ago. No need to own Tom Gordon or Alfonseca in fantasy.

Nate (Austin)

Teixeria is going to hit 60 home runs in Atlanta. Mark my words.

Eric Karabell
  (11:09 AM)

Not in the next two months he won't. And I really doubt he does that next season as well. Teixeira's value doesn't change much. If I had to pick whether it goes up or down, it would be slightly down, but barely.

Steve (NJ)

Help me out, Eric; I lost Utley and Cuddyer to injury and fell from second to fourth in my league. Salty's going to do ___________ the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (11:11 AM)

Assuming Texas plays Saltalamacchia every day, which I think they will, he'll be a decent option for batting average and hit some homers. Will he hit 10 more homers? It's always possible, but let's remember he's only 22, and we have no idea how much he'll play or where, nor where he will bat.

Barry (boston)

When do you think we'll see Giambi and what can we expect from him when he returns?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

I think Giambi could be back in a week or two, become the everyday DH against RHP and be somewhat productive. Giambi is a walker, and he swings at the right pitches. Injury shouldn't change that. I don't expect a ton of power right away, but certainly Giambi is someone to be owned in deep mixed leagues.

Quinn (NY)

Who gets the boot in Boston when the Blogger comes off the DL? Lester or Gabbard?

Eric Karabell
  (11:13 AM)

When Schilling returns I would think Gabbard is in danger of heading to the minors, especially after his last outing. Lester hasn't been great, but he's seen as the better prospect.

Jim (Pittsburgh)

Embree worth holding onto, or is Street a safe bet going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

I don't think Street is a safe bet at all. The A's have not made the change back to Street yet, because he hasn't pitched real well. I do expect Street to close soon, assuming he's healthy, but I have no dropped Embree yet in the leagues I have him in, just in case.

Ralph (Long Beach Island, NJ)

Start Glavine against the Brewers tonight?

Eric Karabell
  (11:15 AM)

Against Ryan Braun, and his OPS near 2.000 against lefties? I can't start Glavine. His road ERA this season is nearly 6.00, as well.

George (Boston)

Wainwright or Billingsley for the rest of this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:16 AM)

Billingsley has looked better since becoming a starter, obviously, but Wainwright is worth owning as well. Billingsley looks like he finally figured things out.

Jared (MD)

Eric how close does Ryan Howard come to hitting 50 HRs this season? Not out of the realm of possibility is it?

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

He'd have to hit 10 in each of the last two months, which is hardly impossible for him. I think he'll lead the league in homers, and again contend for the MVP if he can keep the Phillies in the race.

Jim (Boston)

Eric, please help a friendly debate I've having. I'm in a first year keeper league and just dealt Vlad away in a deal where I got Carlos Lee back (deal was bigger than just that). Looking back on the past 3 years, their numbers aren't much different yet one is a 1st rounder and the other is a 3rd rounder. Am I crazy here or is Lee just as valuable? Thanks!!

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

Well, let's just say they are a lot closer in value than people think. One of the things I wrote about in today's blog (it's already posted) was the fact Luis Castillo doesn't steal nearly as many bases as people think he does. Neither does Vlad. He has one SB all season! Lee has more. Power wise they are similar. I like the move, assuming Vlad's value was much higher and you got other stuff back.

Rod,Reading Pa

A real baseball question. Why would the Sox and Reds give the Phillies a starting 2B and pitcher for essentially nothing? Is Iguchi a makeup for the Garcia trade?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

No, there are no makeups in trades. The ChiSox were going to lose Iguchi at the end of the year anyway, and the team is out of it, so why not bring up Danny Richar and watch him play? That's the key. The Twins will use Alexi Casilla now, and he's probably better than Castillo anyway. To get any prospects back is a good deal. The Astros simply cut Morgan Ensberg. These trades actually make perfect sense.

Kevin (Houston)

Should I be worried of the Giants resting Lincecum during my playoffs?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

Yes, that is actually a significant fantasy development when teams start curtailing the innings of the young pitchers. I haven't heard that the Giants WILL do this, but Lincecum has thrown a lot of innings this year. It would make sense if he is shut down.

Scott (White Plains, NY)

Come on-- give us your thoughts on the KC closer situation if Dotel gets traded. We need insight on things that we can still act on, not on things that happened two days ago. Soria or Greinke?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

Settle down, Scott. All will be well. I don't see how Greinke would be involved in saves, seeing that Soria closed well early in the season. Soria is the guy.

Don (NYC)

Ill answer that one Eric - its because Igucchi is a free agent and if the Phils let him go they get a draft pick. Now answer this - Will Utleys power be saped by this injury Becker seems to think this could be long term. Im paniced

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

It's possible that happens to Utley, but I think people assume every time a player has a hand or wrist problem that his power will be sapped. Utley might not hit for power in September, but to say his 2008 is affected, well, i don't buy it. Hideki Matsui took time to hit for power this year, but he has 10 homers in July. I'd say he's fine.

Tarr (Orlando)

Is Ryan Braun a 1st round pick next season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

I think if he's not, he's certainly close. Really, Ryan Braun is showing no signs of stopping his assault on NL pitching. He's David Wright. Though I must point out, Braun is not a good fielder, despite what I've seen people say. His fielding percentage is .903. Not good. Brewers don't, and probably shouldn't, care.

Matt (Charlotte, NC)

Eric, if you had Ramon Hernandez or Salty for the rest of the year, would that make McCann expendable?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

Well, I would still rather have Hernandez and McCann than Salty the rest of the season. The kid is a nice prospect, but let's not go overboard.

Jon (DC)

Bedard worries me tonight against the Redsox. Do you think he may struggle or is that nonsense. Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

He leads the world in strikeouts. I would never, ever sit the guy.

Matt (DC)

What do you expect from Kinsler when he returns? Would you rather have Kinsler or Cano from today forward?

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

Probably Cano. He's a .300 hitter, and I think he will hit well the final two months. Kinsler might hit for more power and run, but Cano is safer.

Jerry (San Diego)

What do you expect from Kevin Kouzmanoff for the rest of the year? Do you think San Diego will trade for another 3B to platoon with him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

I think the fact the Padres are discussing Morgan Ensberg and Mike Lamb in trades is a bad sign for Kouzmanoff. I'd look elsewhere for 3B help.

Roy (New York)

Hey Eric - has Ian Snell hit a wall, or is this just a little slump that will blow over? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

Snell pitched well Sunday against Philly, and his strikeout rate has remained intact over the last month, even as his ERA has risen a run. I'd keep him around. He did face the Mets, Phils and Braves, all on the road, in his last four starts.

Rob (Grand Rapids, MI)

Would Dye's value go up in the Red Sox lineup? Would he play everyday?

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

One would assume if the Sox pay that much to get Dye, he would play daily. J.D. Drew is in danger of sitting, or someone each day would take a seat, like Drew, Dye, Crisp, Youkilis and Lowell. Dye's value would go up in Boston.

Bo (KC)

Why isn't Clemens striking anyone out this year? Is the splitter not working for him anymore?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

I have been disappointed in Clemens' K rate. Before he fanned six Orioles over the weekend, he had failed to top three strikeouts in his last six starts! Look, he's 44. I expect he'll get his K rate back, and will win a bit more than he has so far, but what did we expect?

Joe (San Diego)

Just out of curiousity, when will FFL be in full swing? I cant believe I'm asking this, being the giant baseball fan that I am...

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

It is now. I think this chat was meant to be baseball only. Wednesday at 11 am ET I'll take baseball and football questions. FFL has been up a month on ESPN, and you can start leagues already. Hey, the season begins in five weeks!

Jerry (NY)

Alright Karabell, you throw out the comment about Lincecum sitting and now ignore my question on what I should do about it? At least if I use some humor Berry answers my question. Do I sell high on Lincecum now assuming he will be shut down during the playoffs? A lot of people in my league want him.

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

I get a lot of questions, I assure you. As does Matthew, I'm sure. I was not ignoring you. I think it's possible Lincecum gets shut down, but I rarely make important fantasy moves based on that. I will not trade Lincecum based on the chance he gets sat, unless the Giants say something. I'd deal Lincecum if the deal makes sense, but to dump him, no way. We can't assume what the Giants will do.

Dave (Scranton)

With the Philly OF empty and Pat Burrell playing well, how long do you think he continues his hot streak? Is he back to the April 05 and 06 player that briefly stops by?

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

I doubt too many people realize that the major league leader in OPS in July is Burrell. He's second only to Jeff Kent in batting average. He has 21 RBIs. Burrell is totally worth adding right now, and he's obviously going to keep playing every day. He's back!

Ian (Milwaukee)

Better father/son duo on the Brewers? Tony and Tony Jr. or Cecil and Prince? Prince is quite a bit better than Tony Jr. but Tony Gwynn was quite a bit better than Cecil Fielder. It's a tough call for me, who would you pick?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

That is a tough call. The younger Gwynn has done nothing, and Prince is already legit. But Tony Gwynn Sr. was a very good fantasy player for years. He stole 319 bases in his career! So, based on that, I have to take the Gwynns, but I think within 2 years the Fielders will be better.

Alex (Philadelphia)

Lackey tonight at Seattle? Haren vs Detroit?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

I would never sit either guy, no matter the opponent.

Jake (Phoenix)

Looks like Petitte is running out of gas, would the Yankees ever think of bringing up Joba to fill a rotation spot?

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

Pettitte is not running outta gas, I think he'll be fine. I do think the Yankees are going to bring up Joba Chamberlain to be the setup man for Mariano Rivera, and based on his monster K rates, Joba will be worth a look in fantasy right away.

David (DC)

Yo EK! I find myself with 3 catchers, and one's got to go: Salty, Buck, or the Molina currently inhabiting Michael Barret's body?

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

John Buck is hitting .218 in July. I have to keep Barrett over him for now, and Salty stays as well.

Mark (East River)

Looks like I will need to replace Beltran when he hits the DL today. Who do you like best from these choices, Burrell, Melky, Patterson, Garrett Anderson, Hermidia?

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

Yeah, I do think Carlos Beltran will hit the DL today as well. Burrell is having a terrific July, he should be owned in mixed leagues by now. Patterson is stealing bases, and is also worth it.

Ken (Quakertown, PA)

Pineiro just got dealt from BOS to STL... any fantasy value in 10 team mixed H2H?

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

Yes, I just heard the big news. Wow. I can't control myself. Joel Piniero is a Cardinal! And they said the Cards were done! No value. I suppose it is possible he either joins the rotation and turns into something for NL-only owners, or gets into the closer mix if Izzy is dealt, but I don't think either will happen. Ryan Franklin has a 1.18 ERA. That's crazy. Izzy won't be dealt, anyway. The Cards are trying, as this trade (kinda) shows.

nick (boston)

why are you guys so reluctant to answer questions about when a prospect will hit the FA list? - when will Chamberlain be a FA?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

In fantasy? I believe the rules are he's ready to be taken after he accrues a stat in the majors, the next morning.

Weeney (Dallas, TX)

Do you think Vlad Guerrero is suffering from the HR Derby curse? What do you think is causing his HR slump? Would it be a good idea to trade him right now? I can probably trade Vlad and Roy Halladay (I have a ton of pitching) for a guy like Alf Soriano or Matt Holliday. Would you make that trade?

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

There's no curse, trust me. Vlad had only 14 homers prior to the break, so it's not like he was Ryan Howard, you know. Vlad is hitting .322 since the break. He hit .325 before it. He's the same. I wouldn't trade him and Halladay for Soriano or Holliday. Get more back.

David (DC)

If LA trades for Scott Proctor by trading Wilson Betemit, will Andy LaRoche get called up he is killing the ball?

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

No, I don't think the two situations are connected. Nomar Garciaparra is playing 3B right now. He's not doing much, but the Dodgers can't simply bench him, no matter what LaRoche does. Betemit, meanwhile, would be very interesting as the Yankees starting first baseman. I'd definitely get him.

joe newton ma.

is cordero in danger of getting sqeezed if the Brewers sign Gane? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

Rumor is the Red Sox, Mets and Brewers are in on Eric Gagne, but in two of those cases, Gagne would have to agree to be the setup man. In Milwaukee, though, he would close and Francisco Cordero would set him up. LOTS going on today!

Mike (NY)

Any word on Jeff Kent's hamstring pull? If I needed to replace him, who's the best of these pickups - Weeks, Barfield, Theriot, K Matzui, M Ellis.

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

I have not seen an update on this, but of the options you name, I like Ryan Theriot. He scores runs, hits for average, steals bases. He's legit.

Steve Ny

Why does Farnsworth have trade value he is so bad that he never had a 1-2-3 inning since last year I think?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

Because every team thinks they can fix the guy and make him a dominant reliever. Good luck!

Harris (Austin, TX)

C'mon, they would pull Cordero out of the closer role for Gagne? What basis do you have to say that, is that information you have or just speculation?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

It's legit. The main reason Gagne hasn't been traded yet is because he's demanding to close for his new team. Cordero has blown his last two saves, allowing five earned runs. This is not a reach at all.

Rod, Reading Pa

Great job answering a lot of questions quickly. You should give lessons to the other chat hosts.

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

We're here to answer questions, we all do the best we can!

Brian (NYC)

Theriot or Sanchez?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Definitely Theriot. Sanchez doesn't have power or speed. He hits for average, but so does Theriot.

Patrick (sacramento Ca.)

who do you like, Josh Barfield or Tadahito Iguchi for the next 4-6 weeks?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

I don't really like either. Barfield has done nothing this season. Iguchi has had a bad year, and he's got about three more weeks of everyday play before Chase Utley returns. Who knows, Iguchi might find himself in right field!

Sam (VA)

Markakis, what will his #'s look like next year? Definite keeper?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Depends on the league. I think at some point he becomes 30-100-20, but I don't know if it's next season.

Jason (Roseville, CA)

Hey Eric. Can you tell me how you feel about this? I was offered Haren and Soriano for Miguel Cabrera. I declined simply because I feel my team is set right now, and I don't need to make moves. Even though I would be gaining more talent, is that justifiable?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

One should always try to improve their team, but I see your point. I don't really think karma plays a role, though. It's not like your other players will get mad that you're making deals. That seems like a pretty nice offer, by the way, but I don't know who else you have at 3B.

Ian (Florida)

I know he is hurt, but would you grab Michael Bourn in mixed leagues now? Victorino might be DL bound so they say...

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

I would, but then again, I would be a bit surprised if either plays again in this Cubs series.

Lucas(Milwaukee)

Hey Eric, ethical question. Do I trade Lincecum when I know there's a chance he'll be sat during the fantasy playoffs to someone who migh not know that?

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

I would have no problem with that at all. But, again, let's not assume the Giants do that to him.

Jordan (Cleveland, OH)

Would you say that Pence is a definite keeper? I have Jason Bay too. I might have to drop one. :(

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

I think I would go with Pence, actually. He runs. He has power. He's exciting.

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

OK, our time is up. Don't worry, there is another fantasy chat later on today, just in time for the MLB trade deadline! And, I will be back Wednesday at 11, I believe. Have a good day. Adios!
