Fantasy Football with Scott Engel

Mike G Sacramento CA

I'm in a 1 player keeper league and need to make a decision between Rudi and Maroney. I'm leaning towards Maroney, what do you think?

Scott Engel
  (3:01 PM)

Good afternoon everyone! I definitely like Maroney over the longer term, even if Rudi outperforms him in 2007

Marauder Mike (Columbus, OH)

Scott, Three of my four keepers are McNabb (hurt), Gore (hurt) and LJ (holdout). Can you offer any hope for this ragtag bunch of misfits?

Scott Engel
  (3:03 PM)

McNabb is looking good in camp and Gore will be ready for the season. LJ's holdout won't last forever - you're not playing any games yet, so don't get too down on your squad yet

Ray (tampa , fl)

Alexander or Addai?

Scott Engel
  (3:05 PM)

That's a close one, but I slightly prefer Alexander because he is more proven and I don't think he is quite finished yet

Joel (East Longmeadow, MA)

Scott, I really need your input. We're about to start a league with 16 teams. I'm afraid it's going to suck for several reasons. But since our rules are not set yet I would like your suggestions for ways to keep a really deep league like this competitive. Individual defensive players? PPR? Please help!!!

Scott Engel
  (3:06 PM)

I undesrand sometimes it's hard to say no and you want to include as many people as possible - you have to limit roster sizes - only one required starting RB, two WR and a flex.

Simon (Wyckoff, NJ)

How much effect will Morency's injury have on Brandon Jackson? Do you think he claims the starting job? Many thanks.

Scott Engel
  (3:08 PM)

He hasn't looked great in camp so far - I think he could end up splitting carries with Noah Herron if Morency continues to battle injuries. In fact, Herron could end up getting playing time because the Pack can't count on anyone else

Goat Cheese McDougle (DC)

How much do the RB rankings change for a PPR league? Would a guy like Reggie Bush become top 6 or 7?

Scott Engel
  (3:08 PM)

Bush definitely is in that level in PPR - check out my PPR rankings in the left rail of the Draft Kit

Mike (DC)

How much does the holdout hurt LJ? Should Gore be drafted third ahead of him in a 12 team 1 keeper league (first year as a keeper league)?

Scott Engel
  (3:10 PM)

Time missed affecsts conditioning and the ability to get into the flow with your teammates, - right now, I rank LJ sixth behind LT, Jackson, Gore, Alexander and Addai

Clint - Boston

I have Kitna in my top 5 QBs. Am I crazy?

Scott Engel
  (3:12 PM)

Yes, you are! LOL - I don't have him in my top 10. Top five is Manning, Plamer, Breees, Brady, Bulger - Kitna is not better than any of those guys - too many turnovers and not enough ability - adding another weapon doesn't make him a better QB

Dan (Denver)

Hey Scott I'm looking to defend my title and I need your help. I'm in a 14 team keeper league and I have Steven Jackson. Should I go with back to back picks of QB/QB or QB/WR assuming that the 2nd group of top 10 RB are gone?

Scott Engel
  (3:14 PM)

I think you should adjust on the run, and loosely stick to getting another RB, one more WR and a QB in rounds two to four

Hector (Key West)

Where does Rivers fit in your QB rankings?

Scott Engel
  (3:14 PM)

He cracks my top 10 - smart kid, Turner will help a lot, and he makes good decisions

Simon (Wyckoff, NJ)

Does Pace's return maybe push Bulger ahead of Brady? Many thanks.

Scott Engel
  (3:16 PM)

I don't think so, as Brady has better weaponry and will thrown downfield more this year - but that doesn't mean Bulger won;'t be good - he can set a new career high in TD passes this year

Dan (Lake Oswego)

Scott, is there much seperation between Evans and Driver?

Scott Engel
  (3:17 PM)

I think they are very close in terms of production, but I slightly prefer Evans, who is a bit more explosive and a slightly better possession guy - well, he will become better on both counts this year

Dan (Huntsville, AL)

Willie Parker said in training camp that he wants to be better than LT. Will he be even close this year?

Scott Engel
  (3:18 PM)

I doubt it, but he's setting goals for himself to be more of a workhorse and you can look for another fine year

Mark (Kearny, NJ)

How can you say Brady has better weaponry than Bulger? Moss is not what he used to be and Stallworth is overrated. I'll easily take Bulger over Brady. I trust Holt, Bennett, Bruce, McMichael, and some guy named S-Jax a lot more.

Scott Engel
  (3:20 PM)

Better downfield weaponry - the St. Louis offense is based more on short drops and quick hits, and the Rams will run the ball more than the Pats - I meant the Pats will likely thrown downfield more

Tim (San Diego)

You "doubt" Parker will achieve his goal of being better than LT?!

Scott Engel
  (3:21 PM)

I doubt he will come anywhere close to LT - but it's good for him to set such goals and should encourage his owners

scott

is there any player(s) who you personally refuse to draft no matter what?

Scott Engel
  (3:23 PM)

My all-avoid team - Grossman, Ahman, Fred Taylor, Chambers, Jerry Porter, Dallas Clark

Lou (San Diego)

Given the coaching change and the fact that it's not last season anymore, hwo close do you feel LT and S-Jax are? An argument has to be made that a regression to the mean for LT and S-Jax being much younger makes them comparable in a keeper league no??

Scott Engel
  (3:25 PM)

I don't agree - LT ha splayed under Turner before and is more proven than Jackson, who could see his workload slightly reduced this year. I don't see any need to boost Jackson to No. 1 anyway - nothing wrongw ith being No. 2 and he still carries your team

Eric (Mountain View, CA)

Where do you put Andre Johnson's value this year with a new quarterback?

Scott Engel
  (3:26 PM)

I don't adjust it much - Schaub has no regular season experience and the talent is still lacking at WR other thna AJ

Cody Philly

Scott, talk me out drafting V Davis before guys like Shockey and the other top 5 TEs. I think Davis has a huge year. Thanks

Scott Engel
  (3:27 PM)

I think he has a huge year, too - but I can't bring myself to take him over a more proven guy like Shockey, who still hasn't delivered his best year yet

Tom (Fairfield CT)

...picking Peyton with my #7 pick in the first round...is this crazy? (all tds worht 6 pts)

Scott Engel
  (3:28 PM)

Not at all - he's the safest pick in fantasy football!

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

Why does Jason Witten always get overlooked when we're talking about the top TE's? Show the man some love, Scott!

Scott Engel
  (3:29 PM)

I will when he starts to find the end zone again :)

Kurt (Wilmington, NC)

With Gore's history of fumbling problems, does his broken hand drop him out of the top 5 elite backs?

Scott Engel
  (3:30 PM)

No, I don't believe it does - he was able to curb that after awhile last year and should only affect him very early, if at all

Joe (NYC)

I have Brandon Jacobs ranked as the 10th best RB right now. Is that insane?

Scott Engel
  (3:32 PM)

I think you are overrating him for sure - I think he can be top 15, though. There are several other backs who are more proven or have even more upside

greg (ohio)

if LJ slipped to sixth, would it be crazy to take willie parker over him?

Scott Engel
  (3:33 PM)

It would not be crazy if LJ is still holding out when you draft

Jeremy (Blacksburg, VA)

Another big time question: I know Steve Smith is a beast, but do you think Chad Johnson could challenge him for best fantasy WR this year? Considering Palmer's progress and their timing on deep routes. Thanks Scott

Scott Engel
  (3:34 PM)

CJ is top three for sure - he's not going to be as dependable as Smith - I don't see what's wrong with CJ being top three - he doesn't have to be better than Smith to be great -

Anthony (NYC)

Between Robert Meachem and Dwayne Bowe(if he ever signs) which of these rookie receievers is gonna be worthy of a late round pick?

Scott Engel
  (3:36 PM)

Bowe has a chance to start this year, but Meachem will likely be brought along slowly and should be behind Devery Henderson on the depth chart

Todd (OC, CA)_

What is Jason Cambell's sleeper value. I think he's bound for a huge year!

Scott Engel
  (3:38 PM)

I think he can be a good fantasy reserve. He doesn't have enough weaponry, but I think he will also take care of the ball well

Chuck (NY, NY)

I've heard big things about Steve Smith, that is Rookie NY Giants reciever Steve Smith. late round possibility?

Scott Engel
  (3:40 PM)

You'll always read positive stories in camp and should avoid the hometown hype - Smith won;t be worth a draft pick in most yearly leagues - looking good to the team and being fantasy worthy can be two different things

Andrew (Calgary)

Where does Matt Leinhart fit in? He's got talent around him, will he be a breakout monster fantasy wise this year?

Scott Engel
  (3:41 PM)

I wouldn't say "monster" year,a s Whisenhunt wants to run the ball a lot. But he can certainly be a good starter in a 12-team league if the Cards improve and don't force him to play from behind too much

David (Kalispel, MT)

Greg Olsen has gotten rave reviews over at the Bears camp, is he too big of a risk with Rex Grossman throwing the ball?

Scott Engel
  (3:43 PM)

Olsen is a risk because he is a rookie and that great play won't always translate into regular season stardom - not yet - and it's really not connected to the QB - if Grossman throws enough, Olsen will get the ball

Mark (Jacksonville, FL)

What kind of season would you expect from Travis Henry with Cutler in Denver? And are they going with the committee approach as they've been in the past?

Scott Engel
  (3:44 PM)

There's not going to be a committee - Henry was acquired so the Broncos no longer have to use a committee - Shanahan wants a return to the Terrell Davis days - he used committees because of injuries or not having guys who could haul a full load

mike - ca

Mcgahee, Gore, Palmer and s. smith. Pick 2. Thanks

Scott Engel
  (3:45 PM)

Gore and McGahee give you a great RB duo

Andrew (Calgary)

There has been some sleeper talk about Wes Walker this year. Is he worth a pick up right now from the remaning free agent pool left undrafted?

Scott Engel
  (3:46 PM)

Certainly - I drafted him in the 11thr ound in one of my leagues - he is going to be New England's best possession guy

jeremy (rock chalk)

Who do you see being the biggest bust this year?

Scott Engel
  (3:47 PM)

Laurence Maroney - expectations are too high

George (Modesto, CA)

I'm in a 12 team league that includes 3 WR's, 2 RB's, and a WR/RB. What is your take on Hester in that WR/RB position? Thanks.

Scott Engel
  (3:48 PM)

I'm not even thinking of drafting Hester - he's going to be a novelty who won't get enough touches to be a quality fantasy player

Matt (Miami, FL)

With a new coach, an improved O-line, a non-rookie QB, and elite WR's, why isn't Edgerrin James ranked higher?

Scott Engel
  (3:50 PM)

Because the line still has to truly show it can do better, and Leinart must prove he can manage the offense consistently

Sean (Philly)

Some pointers for a 16 team league. Roster size is the key, I play in one, and we only have three bench spots. if you have more than that, there is no movement because there is no one to pick up. The only way I would recomend more than that is to force two of those spots to be a kicker and a defense. I personally like starting 2 RB's as well. There are 32 teams, so everyone should be able to have two starters, even if one of them is splitting time. There tends to be more waiver wire action and trades in a league this size which makes it a lot more fun.

Scott Engel
  (3:51 PM)

Thanks, Sean

Pete (Seriously Confused)

C'mon Scott - I REALLY hate to beg, but I've been trying this question all week with no takers. In a dynasty keeper league, which would you keep - a #2 QB (Eli) or a #5 RB (Norwood). There are questions in front of both - but I think Eli is more replaceable at this point. Thanks

Scott Engel
  (3:53 PM)

I think keeping a second quarterback is more important than a fifth running back.

Nick (Colonia, NJ)

Where do you rank Thomas Jones? Does the whole Pete Kendall holdout thing effect his value?

Scott Engel
  (3:53 PM)

Jones is underrated and can be top 12. Kendall is way past his prime and it doesn't affect my estimation of Jones

Dave (Jackson, MI)

Hi Scott. Which two would you keep between Cedric Benson (cost me a 5th rounder), Chester Taylor (12th rounder), or Marion Barber (8th rounder).

Scott Engel
  (3:54 PM)

I would keep Benson and Barber - Taylor is going to get phased out by next year in Minnesota

Andrew (Calgary)

If I have the first overall pick in my league, and the guy with the number 2 overall pick wants to trade, what other pick(s) should I demand from him?

Scott Engel
  (3:56 PM)

I would ask for at least his fourth-rounder. Nothing less would be acceptable

Drew, Washington, DC

In a league where you start 2QBs, how far would you move Peyton up in the rankings?

Scott Engel
  (3:57 PM)

I would take him No. 1 overall - again, no safer pick in fantasy and QBs are in as high demand as RBs in those formats

Vinny (nyc)

Will J.Lewis and/or L.Jordan be reliable #2 RB's this season? Who would you rather have?

Scott Engel
  (3:59 PM)

Lewis cna still be decent, but Jordan is playing behind a shoddy line and may not carry a full load. I wouldn't want either one as my No. 2 guy

Marc Chicago

$100 cap how much would you bid on Portis and Edge

Scott Engel
  (4:00 PM)

I wouldn't bid much more than 20 dollras on either one.

Anthony (NYC)

Scott who do you think will be this years goal line vulture, & which round should he be picked?

Scott Engel
  (4:01 PM)

Brian Leonard, Dwayne Wright, Deshawn Wynn, Marcel Shipp all are possibilities - they are final rounders because they won;t get enough regular touches

Dennis (Boise, ID)

If Dante Culpepper gets the starting job in Oakland, what do you think his fantasy value is?

Scott Engel
  (4:02 PM)

A decent backup - I think he will be inconsistent as he rounds back into form with erratic blocking

Jon (CA)

McAllister or Thomas Jones?

Scott Engel
  (4:03 PM)

I prefer Jones - I think he will catch passes out of the backfield and will be more versatile. Thanks a lot everyone!
