Fantasy Football w/Scott Engel

JamesWilliams St. Charles, MO

You got any hunches on players or teams that might look to sit their players week 16? Or even limit them after the first half, because of playoff locks? This year seems more open then most, so was curious if I was missing somebody.

Scott Engel
  (3:00 PM)

Good afternoon everyone! Indy for sure, with an outside shot of Tampa Bay and Seattle giving some younger players more action as they have both wrapped up first-round home playoff games. The Chargers may keep rolling to avoid a trip to NE for another week, which they can do by locking up the third AFC seed

Zade, Bozeman MT

Do you think Derek Anderson will have another huge day against the Bengals next week, I have a debacle between starting him and Brees.

Scott Engel
  (3:00 PM)

Brees is playing very well and I would stick with him

Anthony (Long Island, NY)

Please help me this week in the league Im in the commish set the the playoffs matchups and relized on sunday 4:30 he set them wrong and switch them. In that sense I lost and would won if he left it. Please give me your 2 cents

Scott Engel
  (3:02 PM)

I don't see much wrong with that as long as he admitted it was an honest mistake he had to fix

Tom (Buffalo)

How excited is everyone who went against Tom Brady in their playoff games this week?

Scott Engel
  (3:03 PM)

I think yesterday's performance was more proof about how you can never really worry about who your opponent starts

Jim (NY)

Hey Scott -- I'm a bit worried about Addai's actual performance as well as his time on the field during week 16. Do I do the unthinkable and start Kolby Smith over him for my championship game?

Scott Engel
  (3:04 PM)

It's not unthinkable at all - I would strongly consider it - Dungy has had a scare or two with Addai this year and may use keith a lot next week

Do you see Stecker having another performance like the last two weeks or dropping off?

Scott Engel
  (3:06 PM)

Stecker is running hard and is a key reason why NO still has playoff hopes - I would stick with him

Ted (San Leandro)

Scott -- Earnest Graham got 82 yards and a TD on Sunday... that's great. But he sat the whole 4th quarter while Pittman & Bennett got plenty of carries & yards. Should I be concerned? Stecker waits on my bench...

Scott Engel
  (3:07 PM)

Gruden has said he won't bench anyone and he sat because it was a blowout - I would not be overly concerned just yet

Eric (CT)

How excited are your about Fred Taylor's game against Oakland next week?

Scott Engel
  (3:08 PM)

Very - I reached my Super Bowl in a league that I had Taylor, and one of my best friends did, too - I am very happy for him reaching his first fantasy championship game

Jake (VA Beach)

Are you recommending sitting Wayne and Addai next week? Replacements would be Gage and Stecker.

Scott Engel
  (3:09 PM)

It all depends on what your alternatives are - I would use Stecker, but not Gage

Matt (NYC)

Nothing was better than beating the Patriots homer in our league who drafted Brady, Moss, Welker, Morris, and the Pats D, then proceeded to go 12-2 while talking smack the whole year. Vindication.

Scott Engel
  (3:10 PM)

That also proves something else - you cannot lean too much on one team

Martin Van Nostrum (Denmark)

How could your esteemed colleague Chris Harris call Westbrook's lay-down "a disaster" and a gamble of a strategy that he disagreed with? I thought it was one of the most unselfish plays I've seen in a long time and made a Westbrook fan outta me. Your thoughts?

Scott Engel
  (3:12 PM)

I can see where Chris is coming from, but it worked out for the Eagles, so I really won't question it from the pure football perspective - I won with Westbrook anyway in on eof my leagues, so it does not bother me, but we will all have our own takes on it

Brian (Georgia)

Is Holmgreen going to go back to letting Hasselbeck throw the ball again in week 16???

Scott Engel
  (3:15 PM)

He didn't rein him in yesterday - the wind and the play of the Carolina D stifled him - nothing changed yesterday except the results - the Seahawks tried to throw yesterday, but the elements worked against them, as did as inspired Carolina D and shaky pass protection

Tom (Boston)

What is the deal with MJD? Is Taylor just outperforming him so they are not giving him the ball as much?

Scott Engel
  (3:17 PM)

He is still getting a decent amount of touches and chances near the goal line, but I think its obvious Del Rio knows who to ride more right now

Alexander Cobblepot (Moosejaw, AK)

If Fargas' injury holds him out, do you think Dominic Rhodes will be able to run against JAX next week?

Scott Engel
  (3:19 PM)

I would not depend on Rhodes or Jordan against Jacksonville next week

Urijah Hooperfink (Ontario)

I havent been able to watch many Cards games; what's been the reason for Edge being so disappointing? Poor performance, or an abandoning of the run by ARI?

Scott Engel
  (3:20 PM)

They clearly are a pass-first team, especially when the defens eputs them in a position where they have to keep pace by throwing often

Joel Roscommon MI

Despite Romo laying an egg yesterday,I still won. Should I play Anderson this week instead of Romo given his sore thumb ?

Scott Engel
  (3:21 PM)

I think you can wait on that decision - let's see how Romo progresses this week

Lorin, Denver

Commissioner help please!! I have a tie in the semifinals of our league and didn't establish a tie breaker beforehand (I know, very dumb). What's the best tie breaker you'd recommend?? Thanks.

Scott Engel
  (3:25 PM)

You are in serious trouble, because you cannot put one in place right now that would give a team a win or a loss based on stats that have been registered already - you need to have both teams advance to play the next team, and the team with the highest score in Week 16 of the three wins it all or advances

Pete (Orlando)

ok Santa I've been a good boy this year. I wish Mr Berrian has less than 70 yards and no TDs tonight - do I get my wish?

Scott Engel
  (3:26 PM)

It's certainly possible with Orton at QB - he may look more to Muhammad and his tight ends

Milton Farberdoodle (Saginaw, MI)

What do you think is the problem with the CIN offense lately? As a Johnson owner it has been drivinng me nuts, and Palmer/Housh/85 ALL seems out of sync...

Scott Engel
  (3:29 PM)

It's pretty baffling, but it looks like Palmer is not getting enough tiem to throw and the defense has been putting the offense in too many come-form-behind situations, plus Housh is banged up

Lacey (Minnesota)

I'm up 21 points and my opponent has the Vikes D going tonight. What are the chances of me pulling off a win??

Scott Engel
  (3:30 PM)

The Minnesota D has played very well recently, but Orton knows his job is to minimize turnovers, so that works in your favor

Justin (Nashville)

Scott, I don't like the advice you gave to Lorin. I don't think it's fair that the other team that made the championship game with a clean win is now forced to play two teams for the championship instead of one. It's a lot more unfair to force a team to do that, as opposed to coming up with some arbitrary tiebreaker at the last minute, like based on the seed or points scored by reserves.

Scott Engel
  (3:34 PM)

It's not an easy situation at all - but if my team made the big game, I am not really worried about who I play, and since no tiebreakers are in place, it's the way to go - to suddenly implement a tibreaker now would result in instant and ugly elimination for an owner and could really upset the league

Terrence ( Charlotte)

Scott, Gaffney did not produce yesterday, but he played in 80% of the offensive snaps. Do you think he is their #3 WR right now? I am tempted to start him over Reggie wayne next week, what do you think?

Scott Engel
  (3:36 PM)

Brady spreads the ball around enough that he produces as much as some No. 2 WRs - he now apperars to be the No. 3 over Stallworth and if weather is not a major issue next week I would start him

Mike (Nashville)

How about this as a tiebreaker? Each owner gets to pick one player from tonight's game and whichever one scores more points wins...that seems pretty fair. At least you know that the outcome won't be biased towards one owner or the other.

Scott Engel
  (3:38 PM)

I did consider that one, but I don't like to base a team's fate on players from one game. Besides, whoever gets Peterson will likely win, and you cannot decide that without some controversy. Thanks for the input, though.

John (Vegas)

Scott, do you normally allow free agent pickups throughout the playoffs? I would've won regardless (played Brady/Moss), but I picked up Warner for my matchup, and now the other owner's crying about how nobody allows that, I'm a cheater, etc. I think he doesn't understand the difference between a TRADE and FREE AGENT deadline, but regardless, do you normally restrict pickups in the playoffs?

Scott Engel
  (3:40 PM)

I never restrict adds and drops for the playoffs - it's an essential part of team management and if you can add a player who helps you win a title, it's your eward for good team management - the other owner sounds inexperienced

Tim (ATL)

going against brady next week and am thinking of adding gaffney. I could drop Rudi leaving me with Dayne or AP (Chi) as a #2 RB. is that safe, do you think?

Scott Engel
  (3:42 PM)

Add Gaffney is it helps your WR corps, not because you face Brady - I would drop another WR if you can

King (TX)

Scott, in regards to John in Vegas... The owner who dropped Warner after he was eliminated should be cut from the league because folks who wholesale cut after their out can mess up the whole season.

Scott Engel
  (3:45 PM)

Well, John did not indicate tht a non-playoff team dropped Warner. I do freeze all non-playoff rosters when their season ends.

Doug (CA)

Roddy White tryed to kill my playoff dreams yesterday but I survived! Do I stick with him or go with Anthony Gonzalez or Calvin Johnson on Sunday?

Scott Engel
  (3:46 PM)

Gonzalez could see his playing time scaled back, so I would go with White to bounce back

TreDay (Little Rock)

Would you recommend that I look for other options with Branch and the TB DEF having nothing left to play for???

Scott Engel
  (3:48 PM)

I think there is not a strong chance Branch will be benched next week and TB will still give its starters a lot of quality time

Scott (Rochester, NY)

I need a TE for tonight, so Olsen or Clark?

Scott Engel
  (3:49 PM)

I would go with Clark, who is a veteran that Orton has worked with before

Jamaal (Washington Twp, NJ)

Tony Romo tried to kill my playoff hopes, but alas, here I am! Cotchery, Berrian, or McDonald this week? Thanks!

Scott Engel
  (3:50 PM)

I would go with McDonald - Cotcherya nd Berrian are not reliable

Raul (Philadelphia, Pa)

Hey Scott which QB do you like going forward, K. Warner, Jeff Garcia or D. Garrard?

Scott Engel
  (3:52 PM)

Garrard for Week 16, but he could be rested in the final week, and then you may have to use Warner

Chad (Denver)

why would a gonzalez see his playing time cut back?

Scott Engel
  (3:53 PM)

To rest him for the postseason, as he will be a top option for Manning even if Harrison can return

Nate (Chi)

What about the Cowboy's players next week? Are the starters going to keep playing to make sure an maintain homefield in the playoffs?

Scott Engel
  (3:54 PM)

They have not wrapped up the top seed yet, so the top guys will keep playing

Steve (N.J.)

Hey Scott, I play my boss in the league championship next week, try to beat him or take the dive

Scott Engel
  (3:55 PM)

Beat him - then take him out to dinner

Jay (SD)

Would you consider benching Manning next week?

Scott Engel
  (3:56 PM)

It all depends on who your other option is - I would take one half of Peyton over a full game from Eli

Bob, AZ

Does Seattle rest their players or try to get back to their winning ways? Asking about Hasselbeck specifically.

Scott Engel
  (3:57 PM)

I can't see it - Holmgren is pretty unhappy with yesterday's performance and will want the team to get back on a good pace for the postseason

Kenny - Binghamton

Scott, I play my wife in a neighborhood league. Beat her or take a dive?

Scott Engel
  (3:58 PM)

Beat her - then you and Steve from NJ pick up the tab at dinner

Phil (Chicago)

You haven't said much about New England? Do you see them resting any of their players since they are not playing for anything except 16-0?

Scott Engel
  (3:59 PM)

Belichick has waved off any such talk and I think the Pats are definitely shooting for 16-0

Tom (Chicago)

Kitna over Romo?

Scott Engel
  (4:00 PM)

Again, let';s wait to see hwo Romo progresses this week, because I certainly don't want to use Kitna

This may be obviuos, but yhy would the Colts sit Addai? Don't they need to try and get the running game going, then sit him in wk 16?

Scott Engel
  (4:01 PM)

I don't think he will sit the entire game - he'll play maybe a quarter of a half to stay warm, but his PT will definitely eb cut back. Thanks a lot everyone!
