AJ Mass
  (2:57 PM)

Greetings everybody. It's Wednesday, or as I like to call it... Day 2 of the American Idol Reign of Terror. I'll be here for the next sixty minutes to take your questions on NFL, MLB and Bracketology, as well as judge your singing talents. Lalalalalalalala! Let's get started.

McNulty (Baltimore)

Hello AJ, whose a better keeper: Bj Upton or Teixeira? I'm keeping Johan and Sizemore already

AJ Mass
  (3:00 PM)

It's tough to say as both are in the Top 5 at their position. I'm likely to go Upton because of his multi-positional status, leaving you more flexibility at your draft.

Max (Ankeny, IA)

Am i crazy to think Steve Smith is a good play this week? With Harris and Woodson locked on Burress and Toomer and his production recently... he could go off.

AJ Mass
  (3:01 PM)

Crazy? No, after all... there's only about 10-15 WR to choose from this week. That makes it a lot easier to narrow it down. But I'm not a fan and although he's performed better as of late, I can easily see him dropping balls left and right in the cold.

Keeper (question)

Help! Please pick two players (the round is where they'll fall in the draft.) Braylon Edwards: 4th round, Maroney: 5th round, Micheal Turner: 9th round, Brandon Marshall: 10th round

AJ Mass
  (3:03 PM)

I think I'd go Turner and Marshall. Edwards is a great receiver, but the other two guys are a far better value where you're protecting them.

Emily Latilla (NYC)

I just don't understand it! So are we to believe that after the blackout, into the diner walks Bill Parcells? How is Tony Soprano qualified to coach the Dolphins?

AJ Mass
  (3:04 PM)

No, Emily, you see his name isn't Soprano... it's Sparano... and... never mind.

ro (PHI)

Simple question, who do you like better as a keeper for the next five years: Hamels or Gallardo?

AJ Mass
  (3:06 PM)

Gallardo. The thing about Hamels is that if his curve gets over, he's unhittable... but if not, it's real easy to sit on the fastball. Notice how many solo shots he gives up around inning 5-6 of ballgames.

Steve (NY)

In a points league, where do Grady Sizemore, Crawford, and Rios fall in terms of top 5 top 15?

AJ Mass
  (3:09 PM)

None are Top 5. I have Crawford a touch higher than Grady (8-11). Rios is far behind the two of them... closer to 50 than 15.

TD (Houston)

What are your thoughts on Hunter Pence this year? Will he continue to produce in a better lineup or suffer a sophmore slump?

AJ Mass
  (3:10 PM)

If the wrist is completely healed, there's no reason to think he can't produce a 25 HR season.

Hoopachoo (New York)

UNC, Memphis, Kansas, UCLA - anyone gonna mess it up? And have you got any surprises to look out for?

AJ Mass
  (3:13 PM)

Nobody's should pass them without a severe stumble. Certainly whatever SEC team survives that conference schedule (Tennessee, Ole Miss) will have a case. But I don't expect a team like Dayton or Drake to come close to sniffing a #1 if that's what you mean.

Henry (Columbus)

Please rank the following as keepers, I can only keep one: Reyes, D. Wright and Johan.

AJ Mass
  (3:16 PM)

Let Johan go. If your league uses saves, he can't help you in as many categories as the hitters can. I'd go with Reyes because of the huge steal numbers, but it's hard to go wrong with either guy.

Steve (NY)

My fault, I meant top 5, top 15 in terms of among OFs, not overall.

AJ Mass
  (3:17 PM)

In that case. Crawford over Grady, both Top 5. Rios, barely edging into the Top 15.

Adrian (Libertyville IL)

Speaking of saves I have B Jenks and he is going to cost me big time. Do you see him being worth the money this year?

AJ Mass
  (3:19 PM)

He'll definitely get you your saves, but there's no way he keeps his walks as far down as he did last season. Expect a slight hit in the WHIP.

Adrian (Libertyville IL)

I can't afford Hunter so I have a choice of picking up Cameron or Melky. Who should I grab?

AJ Mass
  (3:21 PM)

I'd go with Cameron. Melky in another uniform would likely not enter the discussion.

Ryan (PA)

Better keeper in a longterm Dynasty league, Cain or Buchholz?

AJ Mass
  (3:23 PM)

I love Cain. If he played for Boston, he'd have won a lot more than the 7 he did last year and likely be thought of in the Top 10 of pitchers.

Lothar (of the Hill People)

AJ - love your chats!!! 10 team 5x5 roto, can keep 3 for a draft pick...Bedard (13), Markakis (17),BJ Upton (23), R.Martin (21) or Lackey (7)...Thoughts?

AJ Mass
  (3:24 PM)

I'd go with Bedard and Lackey. Both seem like nice bargains. 23 is steep for Upton, but if he qualifies at 2B for you, I'd do it.

Michael (Lexington, KY)

HELP!!! I have more faith in UK Football than UK Basketball!!! Also who do I keep Cano or Crawford in a H2H with 2 pts for a steal?

AJ Mass
  (3:27 PM)

Kentucky will be OK in hoops. Maybe not enough to go NCAA's this year, but they could still turn it around in time. I'd go Crawford.

Chris (Bloomington, IN)

Any concerns that Han-Ram's injury issues from last year become a problem in 2008?

AJ Mass
  (3:29 PM)

Obviously missed time would be a huge damper on anyone's enthusiasm, but the numbers he put up last season included his playing hurt, so I'm not really concerned.

Mike: Dallas TX

Straight up. Which 2 do I keep in a shallow H2H league: Russel Martin, Figgins, Manny, Pence, Webb, Bedard or Haren. I already have Howard, Braun and Grady. My gut tells me to keep bats and rebuild my pitching staff. But I could go the route of keeping two aces and drafting to replace those hitters.

AJ Mass
  (3:30 PM)

If it's really shallow, then positional scarcity really doesn't enter into things. Hard to throw back Webb and Bedard. I think I'd go that route.

Tyler (Iowa)

Predictions on Delmon Young this year? I like the way he will look in the Minny lineup.

AJ Mass
  (3:32 PM)

I think a 20-20 season is probably around what you'll get.

Jeremy (Denver, CO)

Is there any SP you would keep above Sizemore, Utley and/or Prince?

AJ Mass
  (3:36 PM)

There are only a few pitchers I would consider keeping at all (in most leagues). Johan Santana, Jake Peavy, Brandon Webb and Erik Bedard. And of those, I'd only probably keep Johan or Jake before those three.

Ashton (Chicago, IL)

I haven't looked closely into it yet, but does ESPN offer a keeper league? If not, can you recommend any places to do a keeper?

AJ Mass
  (3:37 PM)

I haven't looked closely into it yet either, but ESPN certainly is a solid webiste to run a league from, and any website can be used to run a keeper league if you have a pencil and a piece of paper to write down the names of the keepers.

Jason (Atlanta)

Verlander isn't a pitcher you'd keep? What if salary comes into the equation? Is a $3 salary enough to justify keeping him? $7?

AJ Mass
  (3:40 PM)

Certainly if you have a cap, bargains play a role. Since that question didn't mention salaries, it's a different animal. There isn't a strict line in the sand, but sure, a Verlander or a Lackey or a Haren at a single digit salary is certainly worth a look.

Lee (Charlotte)

What will Ryan Braun's numbers look like in 2008? Would you rather have Braun or Sizemore in a keeper league?

AJ Mass
  (3:43 PM)

Count me among those not yet sold on Braun. For 2008, I'd rather stick with Grady and the average stats he's produced than the promise of an insane Braun season. But in a keeper league? I might be willing to gamble on Ryan. Even if he hits 25 HR's this season, he's likely to do that or better for the next 5-10 years. Grady? Not so much.

ryan(madison,wi)

I have been offered Street($11/2 yrs) for Konerko($1/3 yrs). I have Loney to take Konerkos place at the same price. Chad Cordero is going to go for roughly 15 bucks. Should I pull the trigger and add a below league value closer?

AJ Mass
  (3:47 PM)

That elbow scares me a little bit, but you know your league better than I do. If there's not likely to be a better value to be had you make the trade. I'd rather have an iffy Street than Cordero, and especially if Chad is more $$$$.

bob (Florida)

how many wins will duke have and can they win the acc?

AJ Mass
  (3:49 PM)

Duke will get around 22 wins, but I don't think they can win the ACC regular season title simply because I don't think UNC loses more than 2 conference games. But in the ACC tourney? That Duke could conceivably win.

Grant (New York)

Where does Hafner go this year? Any idea if he bounces back?

AJ Mass
  (3:51 PM)

He's about a 30 HR guy and probably a 5th rounder or thereabouts.

matt (ct)

i understand there 17-0 but bill belichek cheated this year how does he win coach of the year he cheated this year!!!!!!!

AJ Mass
  (3:53 PM)

If somehow you honestly believe that Belichick got any advantage in beating the putrid Jets by taping a game that he himself was watching with his own two eyes, then I feel sorry for you.

AJ Mass
  (3:53 PM)

We only have time for a few more folks, so let's get them in.

Blake (OH)

I got screwed on my QB's I had Rivers and J Campell but I need to drop Rivers in my keeper leauge and need to pick up a new QB. I Campell good enough to start the season until I can pull off a trade?

AJ Mass
  (3:55 PM)

I do not now nor will I ever recommend Campbell.

David(Mass)

if the Pats weren't creating an advantage for themselves by taping the signals, they wouldn't have done it.

AJ Mass
  (3:57 PM)

Oh, dear dear David. Yes, after analyzing the footage, assuming the Jets didn't change their signals, they'd have gained an advantage THE NEXT TIME they played. But the tapes were confiscated. End of story. Let it go, people.

Tyler (Iowa)

Liriano.....over or under 13 wins?

AJ Mass
  (3:58 PM)

I think that's an excellent placement of the line. But I'll go under.

mike (newport beach)

how do you rate ss, reyes, hanley ramirez, jeter, and so on?

AJ Mass
  (4:00 PM)

Rollins, Ramirez, Reyes, Guillen, Tulo, Cabrera are my top 6.

AJ Mass
  (4:01 PM)

That's all we have time for gang. Thanks for the questions. We'll be back soon to do it all over again. Other door, please.
