Happy Wednesday all, or as I like to call it... T-Minus 1 for new episodes of Lost. Woo to the hoo! We've got the Super Bowl looming, and as always, I'm happy to talk Bracketology. Plus, I heard something about a new guy coming to Shea? Anyone know what that's all about? 60 minutes to go, let's cut the sash on this beauty pageant.
AJ, what do you think Santana's numbers will be like on 2008?
With that lineup behind him? 20 - 5, 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP.
Greetings AJ, can you give me your rankings for these second basemen: Kinsler, Howie, Cano.
I go Kinsler, then Cano, then Kendrick.
Can't be 9 teams from the Big East since that isn't allowed by rule. So which team is left out?
This is not the first time someone has suggested this, and I don't know why? There's no rule that says 9 Big East teams can't go. It's unlikely to happen, but it could. I think Villanova is very vulnerable, and probably most "on the bubble" right now.
Can we have a moment of silence for all the Johan owners in AL-only keeper leagues?
It's so hard (everybody join in) to say goodbye (pouring out my bottle) to yesterday!
AJ, how down on Bonderman are you?
Pretty down. That second half was brutal and if your explanation is "well, he did have a sore elbow" that doesn't exactly inspire confidence for the future.
I respectfully disagree. As someone who is in a league where both Johan Santana and ARod were on the same team, saying goodbye is awfully easy.
Oh, Bill. That moment of silence was for Johan owners... not opponents. You're the type to BOO little girls wearing Patriot jerseys in a Punt/Pass/Kick Awards ceremony aren't you?
Your thoughts on Longoria? How would you feel about him starting for you in a 11 team league?
I don't think I'd want him starting for me just yet, but I'd definitely want him on my bench.
Deadline soon approaching here ... allowed to keep three and I am thinking about trading a draft pick to add a QB or WR keeper. Could you please rank your top 3 of these players with the best value? Tom Brady (1st round draft pick + more), Carson Palmer (2nd), Tony Romo (2nd), Fitz (2nd), Braylon Edwards (2nd), Housh (2nd), Jennings (2nd), Plaxico (3rd), Marshall (3rd), Santonio Holmes (3rd), Calvin Johnson (5th) ... Thanks!
Brady is not going to have another 2007, but he's definitely in the 1st Round discussion for 2008. Marshall at No. 3 is OK value-wise as well. But I can't really go with anyone else right now.
Please help!! I somehow ended up with the entire Astros team. I have Pence, C. Lee, Berkman, Tejada, and Bourne. Who should I trade and who should I keep? I'm in a pretty deep keeper league and desparate for steals, but 5 players from one team?
Yes, one team overload can kill you. Well, common sense says to unload Tejada while you can due to all those off-field issues that may come down the pike. I'd see what I could get for Pence. There's bound to be someone to pay too much for him.
AJ, Given how Pujols has a bum elbow and Santana is going to dominate in the NL, would you deal Pujols to get Johan?
I've gone on record saying I am down on Pujols, so I certainly would jump on that deal. I think the elbow thing has been blown a tad out of proportion, though.
AJ, you're still my favorite. Is Jarrens a good sleeper this year?
You mean Jair Jurrjens? If so, I think he's probably a year away.
What do you think of taking a $1 flier on Ervin Santana. Low risk, possible high reward? I hear he's doing well in winter ball.
If you promise to only start him when he pitches at home, then I'll let you spend the $1.
6 team, 5x5 AL only keeper league. I had planned on letting CC Sabathia go (4th round pick), and keeping Ian Kinsler (11th) and Jacoby Ellsbury (25) instead, but with Santana's trade to the NL I'm rethinking my keepers. How much more valuable is CC now that he is arguably the best pitcher in the AL?
CC doesn't have any more value to YOU than he did before. If you felt he was OK to let go before, you should still feel that way, because the free agent pool won't be any deeper. Having said that, I'd keep CC over Ellsbury every day of the week.
Why do we go straight from fantasy football to fantasy baseball??? What happened to basketball? Is it that un-popular?
I'm sure it has its fan base. However, I have found it the least interesting of the fantasy sports, and spend my own personal time watching NCAA, so my NBA knowledge would help you about as much as a pharmacist doing brain surgery.
What's your Super Bowl prediction?
My prediction? Pain.
Sorry, that was Mr. T's prediction. I always screw that one up. I'm a Giants fan, married to a Pats fan, so I recuse myself from any predictions on the subject.
Any love for Baylor as a 2 seed?
They may not get a 2 seed in the Big 12, Joe, let alone the NCAAs. What they've accomplished in such a short time since the tragic events is remarkable... just enjoy.
What's up AJ? I am in a 12-Team 5-Player Keeper League. Would you trade Lance Berkman for Brandon Phillips?
I would. Especially with the age gap.
AJ, could you give me some players who won't end up on your teams and some players who will end up on a lot of your teams? Thanks.
I am not a fan of Pujols, Utley and Weeks to name a few. I know I'm way higher on Byrnes, Pierre and C Young than most.
AJ, who would you keep Hamels or Markakis?
I generally keep hitters over pitchers on principle alone. I am not a big Hamels fan until he fixes what I feel is a tip-off in his delivery.
AJ, I have Gallardo for $1 this season. Should I re-sign him for 2 or 3 years? His contract would go up $5 each year. With a staff of Gallardo, Verlander, Snell and Liriano, should I chase another ace or settle for cheaper, middle of the road guys?
Why chase? Gallardo may well be your ace, and at bargain basement prices too. Go for the long deal.
I'm in a baseball league that allows 2 keepers. who do you like from my squad: tex, peavy, bj upton, ryan braun i've kept peavy and tex the past 2 years and i'm itching for some new blood!
Listen up Captain Howdy, it's your team. If you want permission to keep Upton and Braun, you don't have to ask for it. I'd definitely let Teixeira go for Braun, but I think I'd hold on to Jake.
do you think nfl should do a team lottery every 5 years to switch up the divisions and conferences
This is what happens when the NFL gives the teams two weeks between the Championship games and the Super Bowl.
I wanna rock! Hey AJ I just wanted your opinion, I'm actually leaning towards Braun and Peavy. It's not like I asked you "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE????????"
LOL. Now get back to work on that country music song y'all are workin' on. And give my love to Carnie and Mo.
This is so exciting!
Yes, this chat has turned into a regular Sunshine Day, hasn't it?
Would you take Tom Brady with the first pick for baseball this year? I mean the man can do anything and everything, right?
He's already got a spot reserved on my Best Ball Fantasy Golf Foursome once the Super Bowl is over.
Serious question. Was asked this at work earlier today and didn't know the answer. Why are there more teams in the NL as compared to the AL.... It makes no sense!
If it was a 15-15 split, then you'd have to have an interleague game every day. So there has to be a 16-14 split.
Dee Snyder in the house? AJ Mass a fan of 80's metal? What's the best 80's era metal LP(or cassette) AJ? Pyromania gets my vote.
Can't go wrong with the Leppard. I am a big Stay Hungry fan. However, Quiet Riot were quietly underrated. Let's just all agree it wasn't Dokken.
Gunter glieben glauchen globen
AJ...I think Hermida is going to be a big sleeper this year. Any thoughts/projections?
Well, I don't have him in my Top 100. But 20-25 HR isn't out of the question, so if that qualifies as a sleeper, then there you go.
How soon do you like to draft starting pitchers in a standard league - draft a stud early (Santana/Peavy) or just wait for solid, middle of the road guys w/good upside in later rounds?
Generally speaking, I like to wait on my pitchers. Obviously it depends on the scoring, but wins are too unpredictable, and you're looking at 5-cat hitters versus 4-cat pitchers. I'm always going to lean hitter in those cases.
AJ, in all reality, what do you feel are honest projected stats for Kosuke Fukudome?
15 HR and 10 SB with about a 270 average. But I'm just guessing based on reported skills, and the usual adjustments from Japan to the US. I've never seen him play.
What do you have against Dokken ?
Nothing at all. They're quite Rokken. Dream Warriors was very scary. (Eyes rolling).
AJ, is the C. Young you're high on the pitcher or outfielder? I'm pretty sure you meant the Diamondback, just checking though.
I meant the OF for Arizona, but the SD pitcher isn't horrible.
AJ, Since wins are so unpredictable, in a 6 category H2H league (W, Ks, CG, Sv, WHIP, ERA) should I focus on building a staff of great starters or closers?
I think a category like CG is pretty superfluous. If you pitch 9 strong innings, you get credit for that in ERA and WHIP anyway. If the idea is to make teams use starters, then have IP requirements or make THAT the category.Having said that, I think having a balanced staff is always the best strategy.
Dokken was to true 80's metal what Winger was to true 80's hair metal.
And The Darkness rocked harder in mock-tribute than either. Time for one more before I go.
I've traded away several of my high draft picks, but I have great keepers (Pujols, Hanley, MCab, Holliday, Utley, Santana, Sizemore). Should I move one of these guys for draft picks, or let the studs make up for the lack of depth I'll have?
Everyone has the same number of players on their roster. You're already starting from a better spot than anyone else in your league with these keepers. That's why you're keeping them. Stay the course.
That's all of it for today. We'll be back next week to discuss the merits of Stryper vs. Kix. Thanks to all for your Q's, and a Happy 3rd Birthday shout out for tomorrow to Xander... my own future rock star.
