Fantasy Sports w/Matthew Berry

Willy (Atlanta)

Points league, pick one: Snell or Bonderman?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:11 PM)

Snell. But I have a weird crush on him. Sorry for the delay guys.

Lee

Yao out for the season...who's gonna be at center?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:14 PM)

Probably Mt. Mutombo. Scola is the guy who takes the biggest uptick in value tho. Sorry for dealy. Eric Karabell was just in my office and we were discussing the new ESPN Fantasy Radio Show... 9pm ET this Sunday night

Andrew (Springfield)

WHERE'S TRUM?????????????????

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:15 PM)

We're still debating the validity of it internally,... I like doing them, it's a question of my time and what my bosses want me focusing on.

John (SC)

Will all of the ESPN scoring kinks be worked out before the season starts this year? That first week was a nightmare last season. I know you are the only one who will take this question.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:18 PM)

I'm no programmer, but I can tell you a few things: After the initial problem last year, there were no rpblems with the game. ESPN was the only major game provider to NOT have a problem this past football season and the tech team is undergoing extensive QA testing for the game as we speak. Can I predcit the future? No. Am I playing all of my leagues here at ESPN because I think it's a safe proposition and the best experience? Yes. And that's not the company man speaking.

Nate (PA)

I keep getting an error message when downloading the Fantasy Focus podcast in iTunes. I have been able to download other podcasts from ESPN. Any idea on what could be wrong?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:19 PM)

None what so ever.... I've emailed them about that. For now, just goto Podcenter at espnradio.com or the main fantasy page ...

J (NYC)

I thought you were the boss!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:20 PM)

I currently oversee fantasy content, yes. I do not oversee content in general. EVERYONE has a boss, dude.

Paul (Matthews, NC)

Can I expect a bounceback year from my boy Jason Bay?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:21 PM)

Almost has to be, don't you think? I think he's healthy and while he's not gonna steal like he used to, I do expect a nice season from him.

al (DC)

not Tony Danza

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:22 PM)

What are you talking about! That was the whole point of the show! Angela was the boss!

Todd (Pittsburgh)

Have you drank the Hermida kool-aid? Where do you rank him among OF?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:26 PM)

No, I think he's solid - maybe 25 and 85 but I'm not as high on him as others. Like him don't love him... how's that? I probably won't end up with him on any team because he'll go earlier than I'm willing to grab. This year, I'm targeting all guys that steals at least double digits (except catcher and 1b).... 92 players stole at least 10 bags last year... you don't need to target a crawford or reyes type anymore if you get nothing but multi category guys....

Angela (Connecticut)

Was I? Was I really?!?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:26 PM)

yep. Until Alyssa Milano hit puberty at least

Dominick - Long Island

Better for 08 - Adrian Gonzalez or Ryan Zimmerman? Also, on a scale of 1 (being yetti) to 10 (being perfection) how hot are the sisters Ravitz?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:27 PM)

Gimme A Gonz and I'd say 8.5

Jim, Chicago

Hey Matt, do see yourself being a lifer at ESPN or do you get fed up with them stiffling your creativity and leave at some point?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:31 PM)

Well, it's a two way street... they could very easily get fed up with me and fire me... But it's my hope that I'm here forever. It's ESPN. It's the greatest sports compnay in the history of the world, you know? And I get to talk fantasy. Every job has it's challenges but at the end of the day, I've got a pretty good gig. Yes, working for a company that is owned by Disney is a different experience than working on my own site that I owned and it's taken me some time to adjust. And I'm still working on it. But to answer your question, I sold my site and took the job with the idea that it'd be the last time I did that.

Jeff (Newton, NJ)

Matt, what are your thoughts on Dustin McGowan? He is on waivers in my league, could use him as a number 3 SP. Good call?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:32 PM)

Yes. Love me the D-MAC, all the way back from beginning of last year. D Mac was top 10 in K's after the All-Star break last year... folks don't know that

brad (harrisburg, pa)

plain and simple: the most important asset of a superior H2H team is _________?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:33 PM)

being able to dominate in enough categories to win. The ideas isn't a balanced team, it's one that can win every week 6-4 (assuming catefgory scoring)

Dave (King of Prussia, PA)

If we were in the 80's would you go Angela or Maggie Seaver?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:33 PM)

Maggie Seaver. I like curves on a woman.

Fantasy Basketball fan

Yo...what is the deal with ESPN's complete lack of respect for fantasy basketball...no spin regarding Yao-zer, it took over a day to talk about the post-trade deadline spin...I thought you, Berry, were supposed to world renowned it all fantasy sports...what is the deal?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:37 PM)

A Yao spin is being written as we speak. While I don't claim w e are perfect, I'll put our fantasy coverage up against any site in the business. We're getting there. Last year, we had 2 hoops articles a week. Now we have three articles a day (Daily Notes, Box Score Blog and at least one column). No matter where you are, you can always imporve and we're striving to continually make our fans' experience better. But seriously, our fantasy hoops coverage rocks. As for speed, we take the approach of better deeper and well thought out then necessarily quickest in terms of analysis...

Jason (Atlanta)

Chances Carlos Gonzalez has a fantasy impact this season?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:38 PM)

Fairly decent. No power and not a great average, but he'll play in MIN and I bet he steals 30

Mike, Atlanta

Back to Brad from Harrisburg's question. If I can build a great offense in my H2H, shouldn't I then focus on building closers to win SVs, WHIP and ERA instead of wasting time chasing Ws, Ks and CGs?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:39 PM)

Yes. Although I'd even go further with it and just concentrate on middle guys you can get late to win ERA / WHIP. Draft ALL offense until you can't anymore than all middle guys or closers if any are left. It's a risky strtaegy because you have little room for error in offense, but if you stick to it and do it right, you'll go undefeated

Brick (Brooklyn)

Adam Madison should become a regular columnist. His NBA stuff is really solid.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:40 PM)

Yeah, he's great. He's an old TMR guy and we used him for football and he'll do some baseball stuff as well. He's part of the rotation....We like him a lot

Jason (Atlanta)

How could you guys have an ESPN experts mock draft and you not participate? I understand you had other priorites, but push the draft back a day or something man!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:41 PM)

I was traveling... we're gonna have many mock drafts and I'll be in a lot of them, don't worry. But my team here knows their stuff, guys. It's a very good and deep roster.

Tripp (Macon)

In a H2H points league, strategy still the same? Love the crazy broad stories...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:44 PM)

No, because it doesn't work as well. But there it's more about total points than balanbce... like, I'd draft all speed there, you know? Whatever is worth the most points in that league. Thanks - the dating stories are fun to write. I posted a new one on my personal blog on my ESPN Fan Profile page. Check it out. http://myespn.go.com/MatthewBerry

Joe(NJ)

Hart or Kemp?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:44 PM)

Hart.

Shaun(NYC)

Just read about Berkman's oblique strain. How far down do you bump him?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:45 PM)

Not that much... 1B is not nearly as deep as you might think this year

Peter Columbus OH

To Mike, Atlanta and Brad. Its the opposite. You focus on only Starters who give you quality outings and high Ks. that way u get an extra 3-5 starts over the guys using closers in those spots. And thus rack up K's and Wins, and take your chances in ERA and WHIP. Going all closers doesn't work because they pitch so few innings that 1 blowup kills you and your not competing in wins or Ks. Starters gives u 4 categories to contend, closers gives you 3.. do the math.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:46 PM)

another theory... I feel pitching is more volatile than offense and one bad start can hurt a week, so I'm not as crazy about this way, but to each their own...

Jason (Atlanta)

You answered my question about the incorrect Carlos. You answered apparently thinking of Mr. Gomez in MIN, I'm asking of Mr. Gonzalez in OAK.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:47 PM)

ah. Right. My bad. No, that Carlos is only for deep AL only leagues

Adam (Iowa City)

Mans League? Whats up?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:48 PM)

we'll be announcing it next week in terms of how to get in

John (NY)

We are the readers and we want TRUM. Don't your bosses understand that? If ESPN continues to focus on things no one cares about (ie "The Ultimate Highlight") then the readers will go elsewhere.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:49 PM)

I'll tell them. But for the record, alot of people loved Greatest Highlight - we got tons of votes. And I thank you for your support on TRUM.

Jared (Brooklyn)

Plain and simple: Brad from Harrisburg bothers me

Dan (Baltimore)

Is there a way for me to sort all players' stats at once by a certain split (for instance: batting average by pre- and post-All Star Break)? I can't find it anywhere -- ESPN's stats are only for individual players but not everyone at once.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:50 PM)

Go to the MLB page, click stats, clcik player batting. all right there... can sort by splits, etc by box in upper right of page.

Karl (Utah)

Rich Hill, John Maine, or Jav. Vazquez?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:51 PM)

you have them ranked correctly.

Cosmo (Bristol, CT)

Berry, just tell them that TRUM is so "Now". Tiger Woods? Lebron James? No, the answer always comes back, TRUM! TRUM! TRUM! And a lot of people are going to vote for president this year. Doesn't mean they're not idiots.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:51 PM)

lol

Trey (VA)

How much does Colin Cowherd annoy you? 98% of what he says isn't even fact.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:52 PM)

I'm actually a huge Colin fan. Very excited he's gonna try fantasy this year - I was on his show yesterday. I admire anyone who puts themselves on the line...

Andrew (PA)

If you're the boss on fantasy content, then where's the sections in the Basball Draft Kit for AL and NL only leagues?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:53 PM)

they are on their way. But understand we cater to ESPN's audience first, and the majority of our leagues are mix.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:54 PM)

I understand what you are saying Frank from Medford. Hopefully you understand what I am.

Bill (Balt.)

Another Brad, Mike follow up. My league has 9 pitching spots. Doesn't that make more sense to go with the relievers as the blow ups are mitigated by all of the other pitchers, and the many more innings they can rack up?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:54 PM)

no, because the inning size is so small either way during a week.

David (DC)

TMR help me settle an arguement better this year, better long term, Gordon or Longoria?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:55 PM)

I actually think Longoria is the answer to both. I'm not nearly as high on Gordon as many others.

John (Charlottesville)

G Anderson had 65 post-All Star break RBIs last year (6th best). Anything doing there?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:56 PM)

yeah, he finally stayed healthy. When's he's healthy, he can hit. It's just staying healthy's the problem...

Frank: (Medford, MA)

I do and I don't begrudge you one bit! I'd kill for your job. Shoot, I'd kill to have Croc Dundee III on my resume. Or a Ravitz sister.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:57 PM)

Well, two out of three ain't bad....

Jason (atlanta)

why down on Gordon?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:57 PM)

Not down so much as just not all hopped up on Gordon pills the way others are. There are guys I like more this year

Bob (Bayport, NY):

Hey Matt, read your article on keepers and value. I see Matt Kemp going pretty early in a lot of mock drafts. I can keep him or Pedro Martinez. I am worried about keeping Kemp if he is not full time. What's your take given your value basis?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:58 PM)

go w/ kemp. Even if he doesn't start the season full time, he will be soon. Pedro is a 5 inning pitcher now who had a 1.43 WHIP last year when he cam e back.

John (Charlottesville)

Is Yuniesky Betancourt draftable? Will he turn some of those doubles into HRs this year?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:58 PM)

I think so, yea. YB hit very well after th AS Break... wanna say .311 or something off the top of my head.

Tripp (Macon)

Why no love for Lowell this year? No believers he can do it again this year?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:00 PM)

Just don't think he can hit .351 after the break like his contract year last year. He'll be good, just not as good as he was and you'll have to pay for last year's stats

Bill (Raleigh):

Matt, how legit were Hawpe's #'s last season?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:00 PM)

pretty legit.

Peter Columbus OH

Bill: The answer is no. The avg RP pitches what? 70 ip per year? Over a h2h season thats 3-4 IP per week. Multiply that by 9 slots and thats only 27-36 ip per week. If even just 1 blowup happens (3 ER or more) your talking about a completely busted week for ERA and WHIP.

Ed (CA)

Would you trade Dundee 3 for a Ravitz sister?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

If you saw how much money they paid me for that, you wouldn't ask the question. It was one of those where my writing partner and I were like "They want to pay us HOW much?"... If you're gonna whore out, whore out big, I always say. That money allowed me to take less jobs, incidentally and start working more towards a career in fantasy so... all in all, a good experience.

brad (harrisburg, pa)

plain and simple: Jared (Brooklyn)= hater

Stack (Princeton, NJ)

Speaking of Crod Dundee III, I've got a great script I'm working on. What now???

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:05 PM)

Finish it and make it good. You only get one shot to impress people with your writing... there's too many scripts out there and too much time.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:06 PM)

Cosmo in Bristol - yeah, just talk to Andrew and set it up.

Neil (NYC)

Hey TMR, a question and a comment - how many friends do you have on facebook and I really miss the boards from your old TMR website. I wish there was a way you could have transitioned that to ESPN. Keep up the good work.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:07 PM)

Um, I think i have about 350 or so on Facebook. I only add people that I know personally, though. Otherwise I get all these updates about folks I don't know.... I add everyone on the ESPN Fan Profile page and on MySpace, however. As for TMR, yes, I hear you. It's a special group. Some of them have migrated over to the message board at rotopass.com

Bill (Balt.)

3 ER on 30 IP is still just a .9 ERA. Even if I have 3 blow ups a week, my 2.7 ERA is still going to win ERA most weeks, and the weeks with no blow ups are guaranteed wins in ERA & WHIP.

Nick (Greenwich, CT)

Hey TMR..u see Rolen or Pedro Feliz putting up good numbers this year? What r ur projections? Who would u rather have?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:08 PM)

I actually think Feliz could hit 30 in Philly, so while he's never Avg friendly, he should be decent. I'm done w/ Rolen however

Sean, NYC

Keeper question. Pick two of three: BJ Upton, Crawford or Sizemore. Round drafted doesn't matter. Thanks.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:09 PM)

i throw back Upton. Don't trusat his avg.

Dave (Phoenixville, PA)

I almost had a friend of mine convinced this weekend that he should approach women in a bar and intorduce himself as The Talented Mr. Roto, just to see what would happen.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:10 PM)

That's hilarious

AJ (GA)

Is V Mart your number one catcher?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:10 PM)

Nope, it's Russell Martin. I have VMart at 2

Tony S. (Jersey)

In answering Andrew (PA)'s question, you answered the TRUM issue -- "understand we cater to ESPN's audience first." If TRUM disappears, I promise someone in a suit at ESPN is going to learn the real reason Tom Brady was in a boot before the Super Bowl.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:11 PM)

lol. thanks for the support.

Tarr (Orlando)

Where are the individual rankings?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:12 PM)

On the draft page, left hand column, halfway down

Wily Mo (DC)

Got some lovin' for me this year my man???

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:13 PM)

Indeed I do. Read my "Love / Hate" this year

Bill (Balt.)

TMR - you are a strong moderator of this disagreement. Can you throw your 2 cents in one more time? Your 2 cents are worth much more than our 2 cents.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:13 PM)

I believe you draft relivers, not starters in h2h. much more reliable, much less likely to implode

Dan (NYC)

Complete bounceback for Hafner this year, TMR?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:14 PM)

yes

Greg (Boston)

Dude, I saw you as a friend of a friend on facebook, does that make us friends in law?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:14 PM)

uh... sure.

Ari (Miami)

"Finish it and make it good. You only get one shot to impress people with your writing..."-TMR Once that's done, who do you show it to? Thanks

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:16 PM)

Anyone that will read it. And ideally they are somehow connected to show business. You never know until you ask. One oif my best contacts when i was starting out was a post production sound editor. And that's because his roomate was a big time writer. No one ever asked the editopr for favors because they figured he didn;t know anyone. You never know who folks know. Ask everyone

Ari (Miami)

What round you picking Rios? I keep seeing him as a 3rd rounder, except for ESPN's Expert mock where he went in the 5th (I think)

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:16 PM)

late 3rd, early 4th. I think he's 30/30 this year

John (Cleveland)

Any chance of getting 2007 stats added to the position rankings pages on your draft kit? Maybe I'm lazy, but it sucks having to keep checking lots of different pages when it would be so easy on one page... It also helps with deeper leagues when you are looking for a MI with speed, etc.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:17 PM)

check out the projections and profiles pages... those have what you are looking for

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:18 PM)

ok gang... I got to run ... thanks for stopping by! And make plans to come to Vegas on Friday March 7th, if you want. We'll have all the fantasy crew out there at the ESPN ZONE for a Fantasy Q&A, celeb party, etc....

Dan - San Jose

We're friends too RIGHT??? RIGHT?? Ha ha...yeah... FRIENDS UNTIL DEATH RIGHT? Don't say no...HA HA... People are creepy, Matt.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:19 PM)

Dan in Boston... send me more info and I'll see what I can do....

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:20 PM)

ok, now I'm really going. Peace out.
