Good morning everyone. Let's get this chat started.
Arod....his numbers are way down from last year and all of a sudden, he's "breaking down". Do you see his form coming back when the weather heats up? Or do I try and sell high now?
A-Rod had an unconscious April last year, so of course, I wouldn't have expected a repeat performance. At the end of the year, A-Rod may not have 60 HR, but getting 40-45 from a first round pick... that's not too shabby. It's a long season. You drafted him for a reason.
Hey hey AJ! Need some major help. I gotta be honest, my team....well, it's bad. Should I trade Matt Holiday for Nate McClouth and Xavier Nady? Thanks big guy.
I like Nate a lot, but again, why cut bait on Holliday now? He is far more likely to end the year at .300+ than McLouth or Nady.
AJ, love the work, in a keeper league, but this year just as important, which prospect should I be most pumped about potentially joining my team, Jeff Clement, Wladimir Balentien, or Carlos Gonzalez, please rate and any inside info on when they maybe called up. Thanks
Balentien is probably ready to do right now. Dbacks don't need Gonzalez right now, and Clement isn't getting the call to sit behind Kenji. Longterm I think Clement is the best talent, but not anytime soon.
Milton Bradley gonna have a good year or is he just a guy with a cool name?
Personally, I'm a fan of the Parker brothers... Bradley is off to a decent start, but I can't get behind him longterm.
I picked up both Casey Kochman and Conor Jackson as free agents, and both have been great. But roster realities will force me to waive one of them. Who would you let go?
Welcome to the Conor Jackson fan club. I've been pimping him hard since the spring, and won't stop now.
AJ, Who do you think will have more value for the remainder of the season, Sheffield or Big Hurt; I lost them both last week..
Sheff. Big Hurt has to do some big convincing to get back on a team... at least we know Sheff has a spot waiting.
AJ: Do you like John Danks and/or Jair Jurrgens as waiver wire adds? My roster needs pitching help and I'm in a deep 14 team league.
I like Danks a lot. Deep 14 team, absolutely would jump on him. Jair I'm not as high on, since I'm not sure he'll be able to handle the IP load once the summer months roll around - but he has talent for the future.
Who do you favor: Doumit or Towles?
Have to admit Towles has surprised me with his power, but that average is killer. Doumit is better offensively, but more an injury risk. I'd go with Ryan as long as his body lets me.
clint barmes? could he put up respectable numbers for a #2 2b slot?
Just picked Clint up myself in a 15-team experts league. That whole "when in doubt always draft a Rockies hitter" theory isn't necessarily true anymore, but in this case... you could do a lot worse.
What do you think about Ankiel AJ? Buy or sell?
I'm buying. I think he'll have hot weeks and cold weeks, so in a H2H league, you're going to get really frustrated. But over the course of the season? 30 HR isn't a huge stretch.
Aj, will Greinke and Bannister continue their hot starts for the Royals?
Greinke yes. Bannister no. Brian simply is too much at the mercy of his defense to continue at this pace. If you're not a pitcher who can get guys out with the K, at some point, you're going to have serious problems.
AJ, any thoughts on Ryan Church? Will he keep his AVG around .300 and score 100 runs this year?
Church was my sleeper pick for the Mets this year. Shea is a nice fit for him and he's always done well there. People forgot how good he can be b/c that park in DC was murder on him. I think .300 and 20 HR.
AJ, please rank: Scott Baker, John Danks, Scott Olsen.
Danks, Baker, Olsen. Scott's doing it with mirrors and Baker is too susceptible to the longball.
Thinking of Church, that trade seemed awful early on but with him playing well and Schneider being a fine platoonish catcher I don't mind getting rid of Milledge.
I don't mind either, but Lastings would have been fine in NYC if people hadn't seriously overreacted to his "high-five" incident. Milledge has Strawberry potential - but unfortunately, that can mean he goes in either direction.
Carlos Gonzalez went to the A's in the Haren deal...Are you starting Meche, Francis, or Guthrie today?
Right you are,Nick. This is what happens when we chat before our first cup of coffee. Still like Clement for the long haul, though. Not touching Francis with Phils so hot. Meche against CC? Why not, he'll probably get lots of run support. Is Guthrie going today? I didn't think he was...
Who would you rather have Andruw Jones or Austin Kearns?
I'd rather go with Jones, but that's more of an indictment of Kearns. I think Andruw is not long for the league.
What struggling pitchers are you trying to trade for right now? I'm thinking C.Young and Verlander.
I am not going near Justin with a 20-foot pole. Yes, he'll win some game becuase that lineup is going to start showering him with the run support, but I'm not buying that his ERA and WHIP won't utterly leave my team in a shambles. Young is a far safer pick... especially with all that PETCO time.
Hey AJ, love your stuff. Please help settle a longstanding disagreement. Is the following trade fair in a 10 team H2H league? Aaron Harang and Josh Hamilton for Johan. Is it fair and which side would you rather have? Thanks big man, keep up the good work.
Really, how could I not post a question from someone who calls himself "Pants Cortez" who I believe discovered Peru with "Ascot Pizzaro" It's probably fair. I'd rather stick with Johan, but I'd need to be sure that I wasn't stuck with a marginal OF in Hamilton's spot if I didn't make the deal.
Do you think this trade is fair in an NL only 5x5 roto league? Jair Jurjjens for Shane Victorino?
No, unless you have inside info that Shane isn't coming back until August, he's far more valuable than Just Jair.
AJ, I see your not high on Verlander and CC. I have both in my 13 team dynasty league. I thought I was set with 2 aces for a couple years. Should I look to part with both of them?
CC will mount a comeback. His problem is location, not velocity which to me reads more as mental than physical. But if someone offered me a nice package deal for Verlander, I wouldn't think twice.
AJ, Would you drop Polanco for Kaz Matsui? I could use both average and SB so I could gain a little with both, assuming that Polanco ever pulls his head out of his pants.
Well played, sir. I don't like Matsui to produce in Houston at nearly the same level he did in Colorado.I'm riding Polanco expecting that he'll eventually come around.
After reading this, I just canceled my offer of Cain/McLouth for Verlander.
Buy low on T. Tulo? Thinking of trading injury-prone Harden to get him. Good deal?
Absolutely. Tulo isn't going to be hitting .165 forever. There's no way I'd make that deal if I owned Tulo, but if you can get a nervous owner to part with him, that's a Grand Theft Roto indeed.
AJ, It seems like there are lots of quality FA's right now. Are any of these guys for real in 12 team for '08 at least: Sexson, Schumaker, Quentin, Church, Lind, DeRosa, L.Scott, G.Anderson, Bradley. Pick a pitcher: Wellemeyer, Wolf, Blackburn, Sanchez, Jurrjens.
Obviously it depends on your league as to how deep the FA pool goes... I keep going back and forth on Skip. Everytime I think he's out, he pulls me back in. Church I like a lot. Scott is very intriguing. As for pitchers, I think Wellemeyer is head and shoulders above the rest of that group.
What is your take on Dana Eveland. Is he a bust or legitimate?
I have a column coming out today on rating pitchers and put Eveland in my Amityville Horrors group... Get Out!
how many steals do you think bourn will have?
Deep 12 team mixed league. Drop Gorzy for Jenks?
No, I like Gorzy, but he's the type of pticher who is going to have a few bad starts in a row, then settle down and throw a few gems. They'd actually be a nice tag-team, inserting Danks when you feel Gorzy's due for a slump.
Solve for X Ted Lilly is a top-X pitcher for the rest of the year. Solve for Y: Robi Cano is a top-Y 2nd baseman for the rest of the year.
AJ, this trade was vetoed in my league, what do you think? I get Holliday for McLouth, Thome, Hafner & Greinke. I think my leaguemates stink. After all, where would Arizona and New Mexico be without me?
The problem with multiplayer deals in league where there is a veto is that onwers see you get "so much" for just one guy, that it almost nearly always gives the impression of a lopsided deal, when it may not be, if you factor in who the other person now will have room for in his starting lineup. If losing Greinke opens up a spot for Cueto... WOW! If he's stuck now starting Curt Schilling... then that's a different story. It's tough to get a lot of folks to grasp that concept.
AJ- Please answer my question because we all know if it has anything to do with baseball, Berry won't respond in the afternoon chat- Is Verlander/Dye too much to give up for Peavy?
Now, Mark. That's not true. But I'll try to answer your question with an analogy: Would Kathy Griffin and Megan Fox be too much to give up for Anne Hathaway? I think we all know the answer to that one.
What has Mark in ny discovered? i see why Berry ignores him. Would you trade Bannister for Sabathia?
Actually, I would. Again, I might rest CC this week, and see what happens, but longterm I still think he's the better pitcher.
I think he meant Jenks, not Danks, because......well.......it said Jenks.
Indeed he did... got Danks on the brain I guess... In that case, Gorzy vs. Jenks... I'd go with Jenks.
Trade Izzy and Wood for Paps? Would you ever trade two closers for one?
Nope. I would not. Exhibit A: JJ Putz. Exhibit B: Joe Borowski. I'd rather have slightly less reward and spread that risk out a bit.
Wait, you're not going NEAR JUSTIN? he was the AL CY Young pick from most "Experts" and he appears to have his stuff. He's killing my team, but man, don't you think he's still a better option than Young?
Did I stutter? Call me Cameron Diaz is you must, but I am not going near Justin.
Then again, if Jenks is out there how good of a "deep 12 team league" could it be? A league like that you'd think Danks would be much more likely to be out there
A fair point... but never underestimate the number of irrational waiver wire offerings in most leagues.
In a points league I started Gange over guys like Brad Lidge, George Sherell, CC Sabathia ...Did I make a mistake?
As it turns out, apparently so. Tough to blame Gagne though, as it's not usual to be trotted out there four days in a row.
What kind of fantasy production will Mike Cameron have, and is worthy of a pickup in a standard 12-team 5x5 league?
Pickup? Yes. I think we're looking at 18 HR. Certainly will be better option longterm than say Gabe Kapler.
What do you think of Hanley Ramirez for Cueto, Longoria, and Tejada? Which side would you rather have and is it a even a tough decision?
In a keeper league, I'd go with Evan and Johnny. For this year only, I think I'd still go with Evan and Johnny. Although again we need to know what I have at 3B and P now to make a fully-informed choice.
Time for one more...
Might as well jump on the train. Do you like Rickie Weeks to be what we saw at the end of last season?
Power and speed are there right now. It's just average that's hurting. If it were all three in the tank, I'd be a lot more concerned. I think he'll definitely turn the corner soon.
Thanks everyone. It's been fun. Until next time, this is Gaberdine Hudson signing off!
