Fantasy Baseball w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (11:01 AM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy baseball chat session. Lots going on today, glad to have you with us, let's get right to the questions...

Chris (Miami, Fl)

Trade Help!! I give Bj Upton and Pence and I get B.Roberts, Markakis and Sabathia. Should I do it?

Eric Karabell
  (11:02 AM)

Entirely up to you, I'd say, but in a vacuum it sounds like a deal I would make, buying low on Sabathia. I'm also not a big Pence fan, but you're doing well in this trade.

Jim (Albany NY)

keep or cut Ian kennedy in a 17 team mixed league? thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:03 AM)

I don't know if I'd ever drop any player in that deep a league, especially one who could make 30 starts for a high-scoring team. Then again, if Kennedy gets lit this week, I almost expect Darrell Rasner or Kei Igawa to get the call to the majors. I'd wait a bit longer.

Erik (Sacramento)

A lot of closers blew saves last night. Who are you watching to next inherit the position?

Eric Karabell
  (11:03 AM)

It appears Manny Corpas is in trouble, and Brian Fuentes could take over the closer role as soon as today. I don't think Trevor Hoffman is in a bit of danger, nor Kerry Wood.

Matt (Lewes, DE)

Other analysts have said that they would trade Cueto for Oswalt straight up, what is your opinion on that?

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

Absolutely. I think Cueto is somewhat for real, but Oswalt is clearly for real, and a top 15 pitcher. Fantasy owners make this mistake every year of assuming a rookie can match, for six months, a safe, seasoned veteran, and it rarely comes to fruition.

Rod(Reading Pa)

Does Fuentes become the closer sooner rather then later?

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

It happened last season somewhat quickly, so yes, I'd say Fuentes could be back closing any minute now. I don't know what happened to Corpas, who looked so good in 2007 and in the postseason, but the Phillies and Cubs have teed off on him this week. And that's all it takes for some closers, a few bad days.

Dave (Fredericton, Canada)

If Sheffield is seriously hurt this year, do you think the Tigers will use Miggy as their regular DH? My min. games requirement is 40. Please answer, I'm worried!!

Eric Karabell
  (11:07 AM)

I think one of two things could happen. First, if Sheffield can't play, the Tigers play Brandon Inge at 3B and Cabrera is the DH. The other is the team goes out and gets a high profile DH like Big Hurt or ... Bonds. I'm hoping Sheffield is able to play this week and can go in 130 or so games this season. If that happens, Cabrera will qualify at 1B soon.

Josh (Sarasota, FL)

Hey Mr. Karabell, love your stuff! not sure if this is answer worthy but Chad Gaudin is off to a good start, is he a sell high candidate or will he keep his performance up for the rest of the year? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

I have Gaudin on a few teams, and am surprised as his low walk rate. A year ago he walked 100 hitters. That's quite a bit. It's Daniel Cabrera territory. I don't assume Gaudin is safe yet, but he's looking good. I wouldn't sell high yet, because he has the ability to pitch like this long term.

Matthew (Philadelphia)

Turnbow's save more a result of lack of other options?

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

Yes, I think so. In fact, not only was Eric Gagne unavailable, but I think Guillermo Mota was next in line, but because he threw two innings on Tuesday, he couldn't go. Turnbow could supplant Gagne at some point and get 20 saves, or he might not get another. His future is up in the air.

Bob (Cola, SC)

Ryan Zimmerman: struggles all year, or good buy-low?

Eric Karabell
  (11:11 AM)

I think he's buy low to a degree, but it's tough to explain this kind of start after a good first week. He had a few homers, and now he can't buy a hit. He's talented enough to go 25-100 though, so if someone's selling on the cheap, I'd get him.

Frank (Boston)

Speaking Daniel Cabrera... 8 innings NO WALKS, 5 K's last night in a WIN. 3rd to 4th starter potential in mixed leagues??

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

In terms of potential, absolutely. But we've seen flashes of this before, and you know how it always ends up. Be careful with Cabrera. I don't own him on any teams.

Andrew (Toronto)

Eric, Why is Andruw Jones still starting ahead of Juan Pierre? Cant LA just realize they made a huge mistake and bench the guy?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

No, actually, they can't, nor should they. You don't give up on players in real life after three weeks. I think Jones looks done, but the Dodgers have money invested in him, and to them he's not just statistics. They need him to contribute. Plus, it's not like Pierre is a star. I think Torre keeps finding time for all his four outfielders. Ethier generally plays the most, and we wait for Kemp to break out.

Tony ( Los Angeles )

Hey Eric Good Morning. I can get Bedard. I have an owner thinking hes going to be hurt all year. Will he? or is he going to be come a top 5 Fantasy starter from here on?

Eric Karabell
  (11:16 AM)

I'm not confident he makes more than 30 starts, but I think when he does pitch he will pitch well. It's all about value. What is the cost to get Bedard? If it's reasonable, then you take chances like this, because the payoff can be great. Plus, it's a hip, not an elbow or shoulder, at least not yet.

Nate (VA)

EK...I am just wondering how many HRs you project Utley to finish with now? I know that he will not keep this pace up at all, but does 10 HRs in April boost him to 35 or 40 for the season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

I think so. I actually chose Utley as one of my wildcard picks in a season home run pool, so I'm liking that pick! I expected 30-35 home runs back in March, and I think Utley will get that by September if he doesn't lose that short swing. He's a consistent player. For now I'll give him around 36 or 37 homers. I still think Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder hit more. Remember, a year ago, when Prince bashed 50 HR, he had only two in his first 69 atbats.

jroll (philly)

WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON IN MY ANKLE?

Eric Karabell
  (11:19 AM)

Well, there is a rumor flying around about Jimmy Rollins' ankle being a fracture, and until we can verify it, I won't elaborate. Obviously it would be a major blow to the Phillies and fantasy owners, so if you're buying low on Rollins today, wait another day or so.

Mike (Springfield MA)

Eric: Your take a Jeff Keppinger. A better option at MI position over guys like Derosa, Lugo or Ellis. Thanks for the help>>

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

Well, Keppinger is a legit .300 hitter, but he doesn't really have more than double digit power or speed. Lugo can swipe 30 bases. Ellis could hit 20 home runs. Keppinger should top both easily in batting average. Depends on what your needs are.

Mike (Indy)

Most people think that E. Santana's road woes are over......what are your thoughts on it?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

I think I need to see more than two starts before I agree. Nobody knows why Santana struggles on the road, and one would think he'd overcome this, but it's too early to tell. He should be owned in most leagues though, just on the potential alone.

Chris (NY)

Eric Hinske..was he reborn in TB(like Pena) or will this hotstreak end soon

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

I actually don't think Hinske is a fluke. He's a guy who has been able to hit right-handed pitching, and he's been used correctly. He's not Pena, but could Hinske play 140 games, hit 15 home runs and knock in 75? Sure he could.

Frankie (South Boston, MA)

Hey EK, does Elijah Dukes get put back into the starting lineup when he returns, what can we expect from him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

I don't think Wily Mo Pena is going to keep his starting role very long, and yes, Dukes could figure into the equation and put up better numbers. Then again, Dukes hasn't proven he can stay healthy and be consistent statistically either.

Adam (NY)

Just had our commish trade Mark Hendrickson to a marlin fan and get back Matt Cain, please tell me how awful this deal is so I can relay it back to him.

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

Well, I think you know the answer to this one. But to each their own. Hendrickson has become ownable, but he's not Cain.

Erik (ATL)

EK, from one Eric to another, what's going on with hot prospect Ian Stewart? The guy is MASHING in AAA. I got to see him play regularly when I was living in Tulsa. Nix and Barmes aren't getting it done. When will the Rox bring up Stewart?

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

I have noticed what Ian Stewart is doing, but there's no room for him. He is not a second baseman, and the Rockies aren't going to fit a square peg in a round hole. Clint Barmes is at least a very solid fielder at second. Stewart is going nowhere, like Jay Bruce and Josh Fields, until a legit defensive spot opens up.

Josh, CA

Come on Eric! I have tried all the cute one liners, etc. to get this answered. Now I will jusk ask nicely. :) Do I move A-Rod & Grienke for Pujols & Oswalt?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

If you haven't noticed, in this chat we're about the information. Plus, there are so many questions, I'm not really ignoring people, just trying to locate good questions. This trade seems fair, with the caveats being Pujols' health, and Greinke's legitimacy. For now I think Pujols is fine, on par with A-Rod, and Greinke can keep up his fine pitching. I'd lean a little to the Pujols/Oswalt side.

Taylor (VA)

Eric, I just looked up Zimmerman's splits from the last two years. 2006: 14, 4, 17, 2, .242 and in 2007: 10, 1, 8, 0, .236...were his April stats. I think he is just a slow starter and will pick it up when the weather and awful humidity heats up here in DC.

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

I agree, but I do think it's a bit disconcerting that he hit for power the first week and not since, and was coming off the wrist surgery.

Bill (IL)

With the Padres not hitting much how long before they bring up Chase Headley?

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

Headley isn't doing much in the minors, and I haven't really heard about his progress in left field. It shouldn't be much longer, but Headley won't fix all this offense's problems.

Steve (LA)

How real is Nate Mclouth? Top 75 player? .285/18/27(sbs)/70 Rbis?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

I think he is real, and the numbers you quote are actually quite realistic for him.

Eric (Fort Collins CO)

Do you expect Owings to keep pitching this well but with some dropoff? Would it be a steal to deal Ethier for him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

I always thought Micah Owings was legit, but the funny thing is he's becoming a bit overrated because of the flashy 4-0 record. He's good, but still someone who should finish with an ERA around 4. He's not a Cy Young guy, so if someone in your league thinks he is, you know what to do.

Pete (Columbus)

.280 20/75 doable for Lind once he comes up?

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

It's doable, but I want to make sure he's not merely a 4-A hitter. He's hit in the minors, and made adjustments, so we'll see what he does with the big club. His 2007 was disappointing. He should be called up any day, but was dealing with a minor injury.

Joe (Akron)

When will Joba Chamberlain start?

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

The earliest I could see it happening is July, and even then I still have doubts.

Jeffery, Houston

What do you think about Tejada? Do you think sell high right now? Is he going to be for real this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

He's legit. I called for .280-25-100 back in March, and that's looking good. Tejada gets a bad rap, but he's a really consistent player. One fluke injury and all the off the field junk shouldn't have changed that.

Rico (Miami, FL)

40hr's possible for Hanley this season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

Hanley is a monster player. Wouldn't surprise me if he makes a run at 40/40.

Max Scherzer (Arizona)

What do I have to do to get called up? 38k's to 3 walks in 23ip with a 1.17 era, when should I expect my phone ring?

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Not until the minute Randy Johnson feels a twings in his back. Every time the Big Unit starts, Scherzer should have his bags packed and ready!

Nick (Royal Oak, MI)

Eric, I love Justin Upton in my keeper league (Rd 16). We lose the round we drafted the guy in. He's currently tearing it up, and I didn't even expect him to be this good. Should I try to deal him away considering he's currently the #1 ranked OF, or should I just hold onto that great value for seasons to come?

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

It's always nice to have trade value, but in a keeper league I'd think you'd want to hold on to Upton and see how good he is. Sometimes I just don't care about what round I got a guy in or what I can get in a trade for a player, I just keep the player.

Jay (NJ)

Safe to drop/trade Mauer if picked up Soto? I could better use that roster spot for another pitcher. Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

You don't drop Mauer, because in every league there's someone who believes he'll hit 20 homers and bat .330. In terms of value, yes, I do like Soto better. Even without value, I do.

Chet (LA)

Cameron Maybin, will he be called up this year, and is he a MUST keep in all dynasty leagues? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

Just be careful in strikeout leagues, because he's currently making Jack Cust look like the Placido Polanco of striking out. Maybin is fanning in like every other at-bat recently.

Sam (Chicago)

Fantasy MVP and Cy Young so far?

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

Utley and Webb. I think Hanley eventually passes Utley, but Webb could do this all season.

jason va

EK0 Please rank Sabathia, Smoltz, Verlander. I can move Sabathia or Smoltz plus Kotchman for Verlander. good move?

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

Probably Sabathia, Verlander and then Smoltz, but all in the top 10. I don't like how Smoltz keeps talking about his arm hurting.

Pat (brooklyn)

What do you think of justin masterson? I know its just a spot start for him but would you grab him for the future?

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

I think he will be back in the bigs later this season, probably like a Chamberlain setup guy for the playoffs, unless there's room for him. There might be. I think he's just about ready to pitch in the Boston rotation.

Andrew (NYC)

Matt Holliday has 4 HR's and 5 SB's. Is he now a potential 30/30 threat or are the extra SB's just gravy?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

I think the speed is just gravy. A lot of players could steal 30 if they really wanted to, but I don't think Holliday is one of them. Take the 12 steals and be happy.

Dick (Dallas)

How do you feel about Hafner's slow start? Will he pick it up, or should I cash for something better?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

It's not really an ideal time to try to move Hafner, so I would just stick with him and hope he can duplicate his 2007 season. I don't expect much more than that.

Babz (Aiken, SC)

Jorge Cantu: smoke and mirrors, or legit turnaround to a valuable fantasy commodity?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Nah, he's a legit 20-homer guy, though he might bat .250 or so. I don't see why he'd lose playing time if he hits.

Jeremy (DC)

Lance Berkman already has 3 SB's he had only 7 last season does he have 20SB potential?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Um, no, I'd call him a situational stealer.

Josh (Philly)

Eric, what are your predictions for Mike Cameron? Is 20/20 too high of an expectation?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

Not too high at all. In fact, Cameron has done this before in fewer than 140 games. Don't wait much longer to get Cameron, he starts playing next Tuesday!

Jay Bruce

How bad does CPat have to stink before I get to play?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

It doesn't have a thing to do with Corey Patterson. Jay Bruce is just not a center fielder.

dave (san fran, CA)

What's Josh Hamilton's ceiling this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

Hamilton has 30-homer power, and he's been durable so far, so I'd call it a nice ceiling.

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

OK, thanks for all the great questions. Enjoy the day baseball and look for another chat session later on today. Enjoy your day.
