Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy baseball chat. Lots to get to today, so let's get going... any questions?
I missed out on Votto's big day yesterday(on my bench). Would you slot him in place of Carlos Pena until he starts to pick it up?
It would have been tough to know that Votto was going to do that, hitting three home runs and stealing a base in the same day. No first baseman had ever done this in history, and Votto hadn't homered in weeks. So don't feel bad. Pena is still hitting for power, though not much else. I guess I'd play matchups with them, but Votto is just as likely to go another week with nothing. I think he'll end up around 20-25 homers though.
How fun was it to watch how much fun Carlos Gomez was having hitting for the cycle?
It was a reverse cycle, as he homered in the first inning and then went triple, double and single in the ninth. Very impressive. Gomez is hitting .282, which is nice, but the three walks versus 29 K's still scares me. I think he steals 50, otherwise he'd be a true sell high guy. He's really not.
Nate McLouth.....sell high, or ride the wave??
I'd ride the wave. I think McLouth is legit, and looks like a 25/25 option.
Cliff Lee #211 in the May-Sept. rankings, what gives?
Apparently the staff just doesn't believe, eh? I'm believing now. He never gets in trouble, doesn't walk anyone, he's been unhittable. At some point he'll give up hits, and he's still a sell high guy, but if I could get him cheap, I probably would still.
Ellsbury or Freddy Sanchez in my Utility spot?
Ellsbury is clearly able to steal bases, and could end up with more than 40. Sanchez doesn't have power nor run. I'd normally say it depends on team need, but I'm not sure how Sanchez, even at second base, helps a fantasy team at all.
What's the story with Alfonso Soriano--did I waste my first round pick on this guy?
It's irrelevant where you drafted him, isn't it? I mean, we're way past draft day. Soriano isn't a bust; that can't be judged from a month of games. I don't expect 30/30, but the power should be fine.
We're having technical difficulties, so please bear with us.
Eric, are there any prospects we should be watching that may be called up soon? Bruce maybe?
Certainly Jay Bruce bears watching, because the minute Ken Griffey or Adam Dunn get hurt or dealt, Bruce comes up to play a corner outfield spot. There have been trade rumors recently, and the Reds have played poorly, so don't be shocked if Bruce is up in June.
What do you make of Manny Acosta's save last night? Is he a plug and play?
I make that someone had to close the game, and after Will Ohman was brought in to face a lefty in the ninth, and it became a right-handed hitter, then it was Acosta's turn. John Smoltz should be back this month, and Acosta's closing days will be over. But for now, expect the occasional save. The Braves haven't given Acosta many chances.
Should you be patient with Delmon Young, or drop him for someone like Hermida?
I do think Hermida is going to be a decent fantasy option, and understand that Delmon owners are tired of that goose egg next to his home run total, but I'd be a bit more patient. Young can run, and one of these days he should break out with outstanding stats.
Can you give me one good reason to start Verlander tonight? Thanks.
I can't really give one. Against most teams I'd probably leave Verlander in for every start, but he's sputtering and the Red Sox are hitting, and it's unlikely we'll see a gem from him.
Over/Under on Edinson Volquez for Wins and ERA by the end of the season. Wins - 15, ERA - 3.50
It's a great start, but I'd still take the under on the wins and over on the ERA. I don't know what the threshold of starts I need to see is, but I guess I'm not there yet.
What do you think about Carlos Quentin's future for this year? He's been productive so far, something tells me it won't last.
I think he's a power bat who should be hitting at least 20 home runs, so to that degree he is legit. He's also been a bit streaky. It's odd seeing the White Sox bat him second and Nick Swisher first, though. These guys aren't exactly speedy, but they do get on base. I think Quentin has some staying power.
Eric: From this day forward in a league counting OPS instead of HR's: The slow starting Carlos Lee or the slower starting Ryan Zimmerman? Thanks.
Apologies, we are really having Internet problems.... I would have chosen Lee over Zimmerman in OPS leagues anyway before the season. Lee seems like the only Astros hitter not running right now, but he's going 35-110, at least. Zimmerman had homered once since the first week before Wednesday.
How do you see the rest of Frank Thomas' season unfolding? Would you drop someone ilke Billy Butler (high but empty AVG so far) for him?
In a one-year format, I probably would. Butler can hit, but he's not getting much lift on the ball, and he's not going to be special in batting average or other stats. Thomas probably has 25 homers in him, but I don't know if Butler does.
Whats the definition of a save? Acosta only recorded two outs in the ninth last night.
Yes, you are correct, Acosta should not have been credited with a save last night. He needed to get 3 outs with a 3 run lead, not 2, unless people were on base, which they were not. Doesn't change anything, really.
Are we going to see Matt LaPorta this year, and what value does he have in a Dynasty keeper league where you can keep 14 each year
I just don't see where he is going to play in the bigs, with Braun and Fielder not moving. I suppose if Cameron got hurt then Corey Hart could play center, but that's not his spot. I don't see LaPorta making a big impact this season.
What is up with the new rankings which are supposedly for the rest of the season? They are just reflections of what people have done. Pujols was down in early ranks because people thought he could get hurt in June or July. Is that risk now gone? Just cause he has a good month we forget about that?
What people have done is reflected, but it's not everything. We still have slumping players strewn throughout the top 50, like Ryan Howard and injured A-Rod. Pujols is different. He's proven he can play through this injury, and I'm convinced he can keep up his fine play. For me, the fact the Cardinals are this good is just as important. Now there's no reason to shut Pujols down early.
Furcal - legit or sell-high?
I think he's legit. People forget how he was hitting into double digits for power, even in L.A., and stealing 30 bases with ease before last season. He was terribly underrated this spring. He's not winning a batting title, but the power and speed is real.
Any chance smoltz is a starter again this year or is he strictly a reliver?
There's a chance. If he feels good, and the Braves have a bigger need there, who knows? I think Smoltz comes back in a few weeks and closes instantly, and ends up with more than 25 saves.
Come on man, where are the Marcum questions? Is he legit? what are his end of year numbers?
I think he's always been legit. He didn't need last night to prove it. The Toronto rotation has been terrific, really. If only they could score consistently. Marcum seems like a 14-win guy, maybe 160 strikeouts or so.
Hey gang, sorry but we've had some technical difficulties this morning with the chat and Eric is unable to get back in. He'll be back next week, when we hope the server won't be such a pain!
