Fantasy Sports w/Scott Engel

Scott Engel
  (3:00 PM)

Good afternoon everyone! Welcome to the Friday fantasy sports chat! Be glad to take your questions on the 2008 fantasy football season, NASCAR and baseball.

Ryan (NY)

When does Victor Martinez pick up the big stick and put up his normal numbers?

Scott Engel
  (3:01 PM)

I think it happens soon - he's had some balls dying at the warning track and his luck and numbers are going to improve soon

MJ, Ohio

Looks like Condeleeza Rice is challenging your KISS fandom! Can you give us a heads up on some sleeper WR's next year? Thanks, Scott!

Scott Engel
  (3:02 PM)

She is nowhere close - she mentioned her favorite songs is Rock and Roll All Nite - boring, predictable. I like Sidney Rice, Dj Hackett and James Hardy

Mike (Chicago)

Help me! I hit gold on McLouth, Quentin, Bruce, and Longoria (verdict still out), btu I have Weeks, Hafner, and Swisher killing my utility roles. Do I package one of the slumpers with one of the breakouts and go for a couple moderate guys (Rios and OCabrera, say?)

Scott Engel
  (3:04 PM)

I would want to keep McLouth and Quentin, but I would dangle Bruce and see what comes back because his value is highest right now. But if no one bites, keep him

Eric (Albany)

Who has the bigger season Calvin Johnson or Dwayne Bowe?

Scott Engel
  (3:05 PM)

I like Johnson witht her back problems behind him and Bowe gets more double coverages now that he has established himself

Tina (CA)

Hold onto Frank "the tank" Thomas?

Scott Engel
  (3:06 PM)

Yes, I would - you know the numbers will be there when he returns

Chris (NYC)

Scott, I got offered Felix Hernandez (I refuse to call anyone with a 1.47 WHIP King) for Billingsley. Part of me says that Felix's upside means I should take the deal but I also feel that they're close enough in overall value that doing it would almost be pointless. What do you think?

Scott Engel
  (3:07 PM)

I don't think the deal helps you much - you really don't fill any needs

Phillip (Nortonville, KS)

Should I hold on to Max Scherzer?

Scott Engel
  (3:09 PM)

I would. He can even help you as a middle reliever and there are possibilities for him as a starter or closer down the line

Glen (Las Vegas)

Justin Upton has 3 XBHs in his past two games. Time to get him back in my lineup? Start him over Francoeur?

Scott Engel
  (3:10 PM)

Francouer hasn;t been doing great himself, so activate Upton and try to ride a possible hot streak

John in Altoona

Last week I traded Adam Dunn andEvan Longoria for David Wright. Did I pay too much for Wright? (FYI - I'm Reds stacked with with Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce)

Scott Engel
  (3:11 PM)

I think you made a good deal and will be very happy in the end

John (Portland, ME)

Jay Bruce didn't get a hit last night. Time to drop him?

Scott Engel
  (3:11 PM)

That's funny John - LOL :)

Yasmine (PR)

Is it time to Trust Justin Duscherer for every start. Start him tonight?

Scott Engel
  (3:12 PM)

You never know when the bottom will drop out, but keep him in there and enjoy it while you can

John (Souix Falls)

I just added Milledge because he has started running and hitting for some power in the last week - is this a trend that will continue? Can he still make it to 20-25?

Scott Engel
  (3:13 PM)

I see him coming in under those numbers - he is going to eb very inconsistent in his first full season overall

Rick (Houston)

So whats you take on Francoeur? Is he a buy low?

Scott Engel
  (3:14 PM)

I would buy low on him now if I could. I am pretty sure a good hot streak is ahead

Scott (Montpelier, VT)

AL Only League. Is Carlos 'Go-Go' Gomez too much or not enough to give up to get Huston Street? Go-Go Gomez is only $5 for 2009 and 2010, by the way. Thanks for chatting!

Scott Engel
  (3:15 PM)

I would keep Gomez, who is impressing me already, and look to acquire saves with other players if possible.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

What about Nady? He had a little dropoff but he's gone on a little hot streak recently and the RBIs will be there.

Scott Engel
  (3:16 PM)

I agree - unless youa re playing ina head to head leageu you can ride out the cold spells and still enjoy the overall results

B (Philly, PA)

Time to start worrying about Zimmerman?

Scott Engel
  (3:18 PM)

Personally, I'm not. I know we are past the point of "slow starts", but he's a solid hitter who will come around with a big month soon

Dave (Detroit)

Waht did you expect from Condeleeza Scott? "Ladies Room"?! Should Jim Thome and his .200avg. be clogging up a 10 Team League owner's utility slot? Thanks!

Scott Engel
  (3:19 PM)

Ladies Room - now THAT'S impressive - way to search the Kiss catalog! If eh is really draining your average I am sure you can find someone else to fill the void.

Jeremy (miami)

I dropped O.Perez and picked up Campillo yesterday; Litsch was picked up right behind him. How did I do? Wrong guy?

Scott Engel
  (3:20 PM)

No - Campillo is for real and just has to stay healthy, and he will fare better for you than Perez, which is your bottom line

Danny (Miami)

Over/Under- Miguel Cabrera- .333 BA, 33 HR and 125 RBI?

Scott Engel
  (3:21 PM)

I say under for certain on all three, although I believe he will have a good second half

Chris (Miami, Fl)

I have Utley and someone is offering me Uggla and Hamilton? Do I pull the trigger? Also, Oswalt for Jeter?

Scott Engel
  (3:22 PM)

I would keep Utley - don't mess with success. I would get Jeter, though, especially if you have a need in the middle infield

JImmy (Stafford)

Trade BJ Ryan for Votto? I have the saves lead by a slim margin over second but by a hefty margin over the rest of the league. Do I go for it? Keeper League.

Scott Engel
  (3:23 PM)

In a keeper league, if it does not hurt you to move Ryan, I would certainly do it

Vick (Sienna, NY)

Best Cover: "Dressed to Kill." No? Do you like J. Upton over Hermida? And howabout Konerko over Thome? Thanks!

Scott Engel
  (3:25 PM)

Great cover, though Love Gun is my fave. Shot on the corner of 23rd Street and 8th Avenue. I prefer Hermida for better final totals, as I also prefer Konerko

Remy (Seattle, WA)

Seems as thought Zimmerman is always just one month a way from a big month....anyway, would you pick up Giambi for Hafner? I need some pop/rbi's, had Thomas while waiting to see if Hafner gets out of funk. Is there a better name out there that might be under the radar?

Scott Engel
  (3:26 PM)

I would do that - Giambi can reach 30 HRS as long as you can survive the drain on your batting average

Keith (Baltimore,MD)

I dropped rolen and konerko to pick up pedro feliz and giambi, did i make the right move?

Scott Engel
  (3:27 PM)

Not a fan of Feliz, I would personally would have kept Rolen

Jones (DC)

Better keeper Gordon or Votto?

Scott Engel
  (3:28 PM)

wow, that's a close one, but I think Votto adjusts faster overall tot he bigs so he helps more in the shorter term too

Dartanyan (Hobbes, VT)

I need pitching and was offered Brad Penny in return for Justin Upton in a keeper league ... but I rejected the offer. Will my patience be rewarded?

Scott Engel
  (3:29 PM)

yes - you can;t base it on how Upton is performing so far this year and i believe you can do better

steve(living room)

is pedro a good fantsy pitcher anymore?

Scott Engel
  (3:30 PM)

You can rely on him when he is in there, because he is still smart and crafty, but you can obviously lose hsi services at any time

Bob Sacamano (Queens, NY)

If you ever meet Travis Hafner in person, would you slap him in the face for me, please? He has now ruined 2007 AND 2008 fantasy baseball for me.

Scott Engel
  (3:31 PM)

Probably not - I can separate the game from real life

John Locke, The Casket

If you are in a league with other fantasy gurus, do you ever check their past writing/chat sessions to see who they are high on or who they are targeting as sleepers prior to the draft?

Scott Engel
  (3:32 PM)

I respecta nd read a lot of other experts and also listen to users - I keep an open mind and real;ize there are other perspectives besides my own

John (MD)

need sb and avg. Drop sluggish delmon young for hot winn?

Scott Engel
  (3:33 PM)

If speed is what you need, I am really liking what I am seeing from Winn this year

Joel (Roscommon MI)

Scott, will Jonathan Stewart or Michael Turner be sevicable RB2 ? I have SJax already and can stock other positions and grab these guys later

Scott Engel
  (3:34 PM)

I think Turner will be a good TD option, Turner ill be inconsistent but won;t slip past the fourth round in most drafts

John (Texas)

I need a lot of help at closer. What kind of return should/would I get for CoJack or Jay Bruce?

Scott Engel
  (3:35 PM)

Instead of going after one player, look at the rosters in your league. Identify a team that has a surplus or good stock of closers and make an offer to open talks

Kevin (Nashville)

What do you think about Chris Johnson in the Titans backfield this season?

Scott Engel
  (3:36 PM)

White is still the man, and with his build, Johnson figures to be nothing more than a change of pace guy with limited fantasy appeal

Dan, Boston, MA

Greinke and Cain--keepers? Campillo, Litsch, Rasner available. My team's last in ERA and WHIP.

Scott Engel
  (3:38 PM)

I would keep Greinke, but if you must cut Cain, I would get Litsch - I would rather you bench Cain, though, than cut him

James (UT)

Okay, so I know this question would have been crazy to ask two months ago, heck it still may be a crazy question. I was wondering do you think it is possible for E. Santana to out perform J. Santana this season? Everyone is saying that Johan's velocity is down and that he isn't throwing his slider as much. I think their numbers will be closer than people think.

Scott Engel
  (3:40 PM)

Johan is not quite as dominant as he was two years ago, but I think he still outperforms Ervin. That doesn;t mean Ervin is not going to be good, though, and where they finally rank against each other has no major impact on your team

PJ Athens, OH

Who wins this trade: BJ Ryan + BJ Upton for Halladay + Jeter?

Scott Engel
  (3:41 PM)

I would rather be on the Halladay/Jeter side.

Gary (MA)

What happens first: Headley hits a home run for the Padres or Chris Carpenter wins a game for the Cardinals?

Scott Engel
  (3:42 PM)

I'll take the Headley HR :)

John (White Plains, NY)

Is Randy Winn a sleeper 20-20 guy?

Scott Engel
  (3:42 PM)

I don't think he'll get to 20 HRS, but some power will be a nice bonus, anyway

Previte (Amherst)

Been offered Votto and Kemp for Markakis and Kershaw. Should I sell high on Kershaw's hype?

Scott Engel
  (3:44 PM)

I would do it, before he hits a rough patch, if he have other quality starting pitchers to fall back on

Josh (VA)

Okay, so I need some offensive help. Would trading Lackey to get Rios be a smart move? Rios seems like a good buy low, and while I like Lackey I am not sure who else to target. Thanks.

Scott Engel
  (3:45 PM)

I think you should keep shopping and might be able to do a bit better for Lackey

James (NJ)

Time to give up on Delmon and Hermida? I have 2 too many OFs and neither are playing well enough to start. Both are keepers next year(Delmon in the 10th and Hermida in the 12th), but will either do anything this year to make we want them back next year?

Scott Engel
  (3:46 PM)

Ina yearly leageu I can see giving up, but in a keeper league, I would try to trade them instead of dropping them

James - Phoenix

Please help me out before I bench this game for good. What's the hey to hitting Hr's in MLB 08?

Scott Engel
  (3:47 PM)

Guess low pitches and then swing in the middle of the plaet when you guess correctly. Always jump on a guy's worst pitch when you guess correctly

Ben (MN)

Need help with SS, have Wright and Zimmerman at 3B. Who should I expect for Wright, HanRam or Reyes?

Scott Engel
  (3:49 PM)

Again, it is not about identifying specific players - it's about identifying the right trade partner who you can both fill gaps with. Plus, I would keep Wright.

James - Phoenix

Sorry, follow up. So always power swing when i guess correctly?

Scott Engel
  (3:49 PM)

No - regular swings can produce HRS - focus on moving runners and some HRs will come naturally

Perry (Boston)

Sorry if I keep asking this, but I really need it answered. Ortiz and Atkins for Fielder and B.J. Upton in a 10 team, h2h, keeper league. Who wins?

Scott Engel
  (3:51 PM)

Not overturnable, but I would rather be on the Fielder/Upton side.

Greg (San Antonio, TX)

How good is Josh Hamilton really? IS he EVER going to slump? Ive been offered him for my Kemp/Halladay or Kemp/Volquez. Either of those takers?

Scott Engel
  (3:52 PM)

Of cousre he will slump, but I believe the final numbers will be really good. I would try to keep Halladay.

Chris (Syracuse, NY)

What's the deal with Church...should've the Mets Dl'ed him by now? Are 2 concussions going to mean a bad 2nd half?

Scott Engel
  (3:53 PM)

I don't believe the effects will linger that long, although I have no inside info.

Jack (Chicago)

Mags and Wagner or D Lee and Jurjens? Thanks

Scott Engel
  (3:54 PM)

I would be on either side as long as needs are filled.

Dave (FL)

Now that I think about it, have you faced Barry Zito in MLB 08 yet? I hope that game isn't TOO realistic because I faced tougher pitchers in little league!

Scott Engel
  (3:55 PM)

Nope - everyone seems to take the Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees and occasionally, the Indians or White Sox.

John Seatlle

who wins this trade in NL ony... bourn, howard and Chan ho park for zimmerman, nady and hudson

Scott Engel
  (3:56 PM)

I would rather be on the second side of the deal, even though I am a big Howard backer

Tate (Pittsburgh, PA)

BUZZER BEATER!!!! Which side would you want?? Braun/Joba or Saunders/Conor Jackson???

Scott Engel
  (3:57 PM)

I would feel more comfortable with the second side of the deal

Scott (Montpelier, VT)

What are your thoughts on Phil Hughes? Is he worth keeping for 2009 (in an AL Only league)? 2010? Thanks for chatting!

Scott Engel
  (3:58 PM)

I think he is worthy keeper and should start turning things around for himself no later than 2009

Rico (Danbury, CT)

Drop Snell or Wolf when Pedro comes back?

Scott Engel
  (3:59 PM)

I would not drop anyone for Pedro - you may lose hsi services quickly and regret it

Walter (Athens, GA)

Posada finish 2008 as a top 5 catcher?

Scott Engel
  (4:00 PM)

Probably not - be he will still be solid when healthy

Ben (CT)

do you see konerko getting hot after last night? (2-4, hr)

Scott Engel
  (4:00 PM)

I think I have to see a lot more than that to be convinced

Mike (NYC)

Please pick one for me to pick up: Duchscherer, Campillo, Rasner

Scott Engel
  (4:01 PM)

I'll go with Rasner, he's looking good ona team that can give him lots of run support

brendan, ny

Theodore Roosevelt Lilly just got rocked in 3 innings, cut him or wait it out-he was good for most of may right?

Scott Engel
  (4:02 PM)

Iw ould not panic on him yet. I still think the numbers the rest of the way will be good overall. Thanks a lot everyone!
