Fantasy Baseball w/AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:57 AM)

Howdy, gang. First things first, I am not Jeremy Bentham, nor am I the Mole. But I am here to answer your fantasy baseball Q's for the next hour or so! We've got our Top-340 rankings coming out today... can you feel the electricity in the air, Kimbo Slice? Let's get to it....

josh (denver)

Can the Rockies really be this bad?!?!

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

You lose Holliday and Tulo and your offense is bound to suffer. Rockies weren't exactly playing stellar ball last year either... don't forget it took a month-long winning streak to make the playoffs. If they went .500 in September last year, few would be surprised by this year.

Corey (Ohio)

Do you trade Jay Bruce in a NL-only Keeper League

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Not a chance... certainly he's not going to be a career .500 hitter, but unless you are one player away this year and trading Bruce gets you that guy, why would you?

Steve (Ithaca)

Hi AJ, general question about trading strategy - Do you think it's better to openly put a guy on the block in hopes of drawing multiple offers to choose from, or worse because the perception that you want to get rid of the player reduces his value? Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Openly putting a guy on the block doesn't have to lower his value. Think about it -- One week only... "Will take offers for Chase Utley!" Does that make Utley less valuable? No. Nothing wrong with shopping around, especially since you can always choose not to sell the guy.

Nick (NY)

Hi AJ, Thanks for taking the time to chat. Follow up on Steve's trade question. Do you like trades where you get multiple players for a stud? for example... in a keeper league, hanley ramirez for cole hamels, miguel cabrera, miguel tejada and throw in player... do you like the hanley side?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

Certainly I'd rather get the 3 in a 3-for-1, but if the extra two players are going to be sitting on my bench, then the dropoff from Ramirez to Tejada might be too much. In this particular case I'd probably like the multiple players for the current season. For the future, not so much as I think HanRam is top ten for years to come and Tejada on last legs.

Brewster (Baltimore)

Hi AJ, do you have any faith in Jered Weaver going forward, and after his poor last start, do you at least start him versus Seattle tomorrow?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

Funny you should mention Jered. My Playing with Numbers column going up today is about overworked pitchers and Weaver is right up there at No. 2. As such, I have very little faith going forward.

Paul T. (Cincinnati)

Currently have Rasner and Garza on my roster - drop either of them for John Danks?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

I like all three pitchers, but am less impressed with Garza despite the early success... then again at least his spot in rotation seems secure, unlike Rasner whose fate is partially tied in with Joba's success. I might stand pat, but a move isn't crazy.

Jon (Queens)

Follow up to the Jered Question. When you say you have little faith do you mean that weaver shouldn't be owned or that he shouldn't be at the front of a rotation? My SP now are Lincecum, Hamels, Wainwright, Lowe, Weaver, Kuroda and Pedro. Should I be looking to replace Weaver? Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Weaver should definitely be owned, but I'd certainly start shopping him. Kuroda concerns me far more and if Pedro does make a nice comeback, then Weaver is expendable for you. But Jered's nothing more than a spot starter.

Jim (Pittsburgh)

What are your thoughts on Verlander turning it around? Someone offered him to me for Torii Hunter and I'm deep in the OF (Braun,J Hamilton, Bruce, Chris Young)

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

I've been in the anti-Justin camp all season, and he's also one of my overworked arms. I have Torii in my June Top-50, so there's not a chance I'd jump on that deal.

Steve (LA)

Please Order the follwoing: Mclouth, Kemp, Hart?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

Hart, Kemp, McLouth... but they are all pretty closely bunched.

B (Philly, PA)

Litsch or Laffey, rest of the way? Or are they just the same guy in different towns...

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Yes and no... I'm more of a Litsch fan, and have raved about his amazing 65% strike rate. But Laffey plays for a team that should win more games (should... not have already) and as such, I'm leaning to Aaron.

Brandon (Boston)

I got offered M Cameron for Francoer, is the speed upgrade enough to make the deal?

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

That depends on your team's needs. I like Francouer more the rest of the way, but as you said, he's not exactly fleet of foot.

Brian (Annapolis)

Worth dropping Gorzellany to stash Liz in a keeper league?

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

I like Liz a lot... looking forward to seeing him this week in an O's uni. Gorzy might not be wearing that Bucs uni much longer as a Triple-A stint looms. I make the move, especially since Liz might not be around if you wait.

Will (Houston, TX)

KEEPER QUESTION: Which of these 3 would you keep, Utley, BJ Upton, Fielder, Bruce, V Mart, Atkins?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

You have to decide now? It's June. Let the season play out... no? Utley, Upton and Bruce most likely if you had to twist my arm.

Kev (NYC)

Forget being a rookie. Where will Bruce rank after this season numbers wise?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

I've got to believe there will be a slump at some point. I've got him at 210 on my rankings list, so that's the neighborhood I see him ending up in.

nick (Mil)

Sorry, AJ... Really need your expert opinion: Should I deal Hamilton and Oswalt for Webb and Guerrero? thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

No. No. And then no. I don't have a problem with you dealing Hamilton, after all, you've got Triple Crown stats from him so far, and you can't take that away. But you've got to sell high... and while this deal seems to be of relatively equal value... I'd hold out for more.

Everyone Still on the Island (Nobody Knows)

Your thoughts on Wandy Rodriquez for the rest of the year? Try to grab him off waivers or pick up Sanchez, Arroyo, or Bailey instead?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

Wandy and Sanchez are of equal value to me. Flip a coin. I'm avoiding any Reds pitcher not named Aaron because it looks an awful lot like Dusty is going to pull his magic again.

Joel (Boston)

Hey AJ, what's the easiest way to determine the numbers that a player is on pace for. Thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

Divide everything by number of games played and then multiply by 162.

Pelc, NY

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Radhames Liz -- will face Twins today for Baltimore last I heard. A K/9 machine.

Andrew (OH)

Keep Harang on the bench tonight against the hot-hitting Phils?

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

That would seem to be the logical move. I don't play in a lot of league with daily lineup changes, but if you do, this certainly screams Danger Will Robinson.

Darius (Minneapolis)

Got some sell high and buy low players for us?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

Darius, the thing with sell high and buy low... it's all about perception. If everyone in your league thinks Chipper will hit .400, it's a sell high. If they all think he's about to go 0-for-60, it's not. It's about value you can get in return (or steal in a buy low).

John (Herndon, VA)

Why, Dusty, why? Is Volquez the next ruined arm added to the list?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

Actually, Dusty isn't nearly as bad as Trey Hillman. Maybe it's all that time in Japan, but he's killing that Royals staff. Read my article today when it posts for a little insight into the overworked numbers.

Peter (Baltimore)

How about that I traded Cliff Lee for Ellsbury?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

If you needed steals, you got one yourself. If you were already strong there, it's not all that faboo. In a vacuum I make the move, but we don't play fantasy ball inside a Hoover.

Brian(Detroit, MI)

AJ- No vacuum here, full disclosure. Would you trade Bruce Almighty for Miguel Cabrera?...I would be replacing S.Rolen at corner and putting in Kemp for J.Bruce.

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

I don't even think twice. Cabrera is Top -20 and Kemp is hovering outside Top-50.

Rene ( California )

Hey AJ. How about some David Price talk. Does he get called up this year? Does he start in 2009? discuss please.

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Rays staff is doing well. No need to rush Price. He might get a September look see, but then again, if the Rays are still "in it" they might not. He's certainly going to get a chance for 2009 in the Spring, but without a need to rush him, why would they?

Pat, NY

Who's a better 1b option for the remainder of the year, Loney or Giambi?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

I like Loney better, although he certainly isn't as "Fierce" as Giambi is.

paul ( bergen, norway )

Think Ben Sheets can keep it up this year ? Need pitching in an n.l. only league, give up Bruce to get him? ( I've already punted steals and have a STACKED offense )

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

This is exactly the type of guy to trade Bruce for. I think Sheets does continue to pitch well, and I'm not concerned about overwork. Yes, there's always a fear of injury, but he's actually throwing the right amount of pitches for his innings load.

Xavier (Seattle)

AJ! Great stuff. Bruce for Holliday in a non-keeper? Good sell high/buy low on the injured Holliday if I have a bit of a cushion, or too much risk with Holliday's injury? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

My concern for Holliday isn't the injury so much as where he might end up given a potential trade... but even so, I'd make that deal 99 times out of 99. I like Bruce a lot... picked him up in several leagues I am in... but doing it for one week versus for several seasons? Not even a debate.

Ortiz (Boston)

I am one of the unlucky ortiz owners currently with him possibly going out for the season or at least missing some time. In order to replace him what do you think about giving david wright and brandon lyon for shaun marcum, adrian gonzalez and carlos lee? I have aramis ramirez as my backup 3b and ryan howard also.

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Ortiz owners should be concerned. We're talking probably 6 weeks minimum, at best, with recovery time (remember how long it took Granderson to get back). However, I'd actually restrain from making a move too quickly. Owners are circling around Ortiz owners like sharks around Blanchard Ryan. Any move you make this week will likely cost you way too much.

Bob Ma

I had Keppinger at SS and was happy - when he went to the DL I picked up Barmes and was happy, when he went to DL I picked up Orlando Cabrera and Hairston Jr. It's a 10 team mixed HH, although Hairston has played well I have my Dl klogged up and I am not sure who should be in my plans the rest of the way - Thoughts please

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

Listen Stephania, I've told you to stop writing into these chat rooms under an alias. Looks like Cabrera's headed to the DL gang! Actually I think given the circumstances, you recovered quite well. I'm not sure Keppinger makes it back anytime soon, but Barmes and Tulo should be turning two come July.... fingers crossed.

Not About Bruce (Denver)

Couple of Questions for a 10 team non-keeper OBP league: Rank these 4 - Kemp, Hawpe(back on Friday), Cust, Rowand? Assuming Kemp is at the top, should i use my top waiver on him? Thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

Kemp is at the top, then Rowand, Hawpe and Cust bringing up the rear. Assuming Kemp is an improvement on what you have already, I go for it. Why wait for something that might not arrive?

Joel (Ellensburg)

Do you see Carlos Pena coming out of his slump or was he a one year wonder?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

I put him in the same neighborhood as Helton and Kotchman. Which is not a bad place to live... it's just not Howard or Ad Gonz's neck of the woods.

Tim (Chicago)

O. Cabrera to the DL? Where is that news from? Havent heard that in Chicago?!

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Tim needs to get a sense of humor transplant or one of them there sarcasm detectors.

Bman, (Hawaii to D.C.)

Hello A.J. Yesterday, C. Harris said that Garko doesn't look to be turning things around! I've looking at his stats and he hasn't been striking out much just hitting the ball to people! What are your thoughts on his second half? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

I've got to side with Chris on this one... I actually lowered him in my rankings a bit after May's action.

O. Cabrera (Chicago)

Stephania Bell just whacked my knee with a pipe! I'm going to the DL!!!

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Brad (Birmingham)

Is Delmon Young about to turn into the player he's capable of being?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

I hope so. Finally starting to get a few extra base hits. But he should be hitting SOME HR's, no? If he can turn this around the Twins might actually be worth watching.

tim (Chicago)

Dunn? Where is the news that he's going to the DL?!

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Wow! They schedule surgeries quickly in Chicago!

Big Joe (Hamilton, NJ)

Paul Konerko = totally dead?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

On life support... but not gone yet.

Paul (Chicago)

Sarcasm detector- that'a a REAL useful invention...

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

Time for a few more...

MJ Stamford ,CT

5x5 roto w/SO Harang or Sheets

AJ Mass
  (12:03 PM)

I go with Harang... but I'm always guilty of being a tad high on him.

Darren (Vacaville, CA)

Mets: Perez???

AJ Mass
  (12:04 PM)

You: Run.

Craig (PA)

Grab Chris Young (SD) for the rest of the year?

AJ Mass
  (12:05 PM)

Sure. I think he'll recover just fine from his injury... could there be a lingering effect, even from a mental standpoint? Yes. But it's worth the risk.

Sore Papi (Boston)

Who replaces me at 1B while I'm on the DL? Kotchman, Votto op Jacobs? 10 team keeper w/ OBP.

AJ Mass
  (12:06 PM)

I actually might go Jacobs if I knew it was only six weeks... he might stay hot for that long... but since I fear the worst, I'd recommend Kotch who I like better for a longer stretch,

Sore Zimmerman (Washington)

Who replaces me at 3B? Encarnacion, Feliz, Cantu or Reynolds? 5x5 roto league.

AJ Mass
  (12:07 PM)

I'd go with EE.

AJ Mass
  (12:08 PM)

Thanks a lot gang... that's all the time I have today. TMR up at 3pm, and you can harangue him with complaints about HIS Top 340 then. Have a great rest of the day... a lot of fun matchups to watch!
