Fantasy Baseball w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (11:01 AM)

Hi there and thanks for joining us in the fantasy baseball chat room this fine Thursday morning. Lots of stuff to discuss in fantasy baseball, so let's get going.

Steve (New York)

WHat do you think Tulo's fantasy impact will be for the remainder of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:03 AM)

I actually think the numbers we saw from Troy Tulowitzki before his injury are a bit irrelevant, and he will improve. I don't think he'll instantly be a 25-99 guy like last seasno, but he is a huge buy-low option and should be owned in all leagues. For three-plus months, I could see 10-40.

Jason (Omaha)

Time to consider Russell Branyan? 9 HR in 19 games and I am currently using Mark Reynolds.

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

If you need home runs, Branyan is your guy, but note this isn't the first time he's gone on a homer binge with a new team, then slowly faded away and ended up elsewhere. So I would still take Reynolds for the rest of the season.

Tim (Chicago, IL)

Where would you rank Clement among all catchers for the remainder of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

I don't think I would rely on Clement as a top-10 catcher just yet, but he is a guy to watch. I'd rather have the safer vets like Bengie Molina, even AJ Pierzynski. So I guess he falls in the 12-15 range. Once he starts hitting at this level he might not stop, but he has not shown he can hit up here yet. He will.

Jordan (Toronto)

J.D. Drew has 9 jacks this month and were only a bit past the half way marjer of June. I know he's J.D. Drew, but don't you think he may be able to somewhat keep up this pace and be 30 100?

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

He has always had the ability. I think he loves hitting third in the order with David Ortiz out, but that should stop in a month when Ortiz takes the spot back. Can Drew go 30-100? I think he can. Keeping up his fantastic June will be tough. I'd deal for him, if it's the right price.

Nick (Omaha)

David Murphy or Sheffield the rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

Very interesting. I think I would take Sheffield, assuming I see something good healthwise in the next week or so, which I'm hearing we will. Murphy is knocking in runs, but he remains relatively unproven, and a risk.

Mike (Boston)

Eric, is Chris Young alive? There seems to be no news surrounding this guys you have any? Also, Liriano will get the call next week right?

Eric Karabell
  (11:15 AM)

Yeah, I think we would have known if something like that happened to the Padres pitcher. He did suffer a skull fracture, after all, so I don't know why he'd be rushed back. The All-Star break is a natural time for players to target and return from injury. As for Liriano, I heard July for his recall, but he has pitched so well, it could be as soon as next week I suppose. Either way, don't wait to sign him if he's a free agent. He could be a difference maker the rest of the way.

Adam (Newtown, PA)

Hey Eric, need some help here. I read these chats everyday and no one ever asks about Dan Uggla. He's ranked top 10 right now and I love having him, but should I look to sell-high? What do you expect for the rest of the year? Also, if I do trade him, do you think he could fetch a Carl Crawford or Ichiro?

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

I think we're seeing the continued maturation of a 40-homer second baseman, and yes, with Utley doing what he's doing, Uggla has gotten a bit lost. He's only a homer behind Utley, though. I expect this is not a fluke, and Uggla continues this way. Look at his forearms, he clearly bulked up, and I would not call him a sell-high. As for fetching a Crawford or Ichiro, that depends on those owners, but I'd still prefer those outfielders, in a vaccum.

Bob (DC)

Elijah Dukes is hitting .311 in June. Can he go 8HR 12SB the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

Yes, he was one of my sleeper 20/20 guys if he could seize opportunity, but I also think he might hurt more than help in batting average. Plus, he really needs to stay on the field, and out of trouble.

Ben (Boston)

Which side would you rather? fair trade of power for speed? Utley / M. Young for Han-Ram / Kinsler

Eric Karabell
  (11:19 AM)

I would take Ramirez and Kinsler. I don't think you even take a hit on power with that side, and there's so much speed there.

Dave (King of Prussia, PA)

Hey Eric, what do you think of Shields coming off of his suspension vs. the Cubs? I fear he might have some rust.

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

I looked at that, and discussed it on today's Fantasy Focus show, but ultimately I think it's overreacting to a situation. I would never sit Shields, and I won't today despite the long rest.

Chris (boston)

Whats the story on Big Z?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

Carlos Zambrano is having an MRI on his pitching shoulder today, supposedly, and I don't expect there to be any problem. I doubt he even misses a start. But he does have a ton of mileage on that arm, 5 straight 200-inning seasons, so anything is possible. He has pitched well, and I would still expect 16-18 wins, and a 3.50 ERA.

Matt (Boston)

Is Jeremy Guthrie a must start no matter the match up? I know he's not winning but we all know W's don't tell the real story. He's on my wire and I'm looking to make him a fixture in my rotation, very shallow league though...

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

Seems to me he is undervalued, since most every start is a good one, and he is on pace for 150 strikeouts. No, for some reason on a team over .500 he is not winning much, but that can always change. You look at peripherals for pitchers, not win potential.

Darius (Minneapolis)

Eric, Please settle a bet for me, More HR's the rest of the way, Giambi or Dunn?

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

Well, this doesn't settle the bet, since there are 3-plus months left, unless the bet is "what would Eric say?" I still take Dunn. Safer, healthier, hits 40 every year and there's no reason to think that stops now.

Joe (Sacramento CA)

which side would you prefer in a shallow points league? Jeter/Soto or C.Guillen/martin? thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

Probably the non-Jeter side. Guillen has more power, and as the season goes on I expect Soto might be running out of gas - he might be already - and Martin should not.

Hector (New Mexico)

Drop Headley for Tulo? Someone dropped him long ago.

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

They are different players. Headley did homer last night, and he's got the potential to hit 20 more this season. He shouldn't help your average, but he won't hurt it either. He's not Russ Branyan. I would still take Tulo for the rest of the year, in part because he plays SS.

Matt (PA)

Has Rich Hill fixed his control problems in AAA? Any update on when he will be back up?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

No, it does not appear Hill has fixed his walk problems at all, and if Zambrano is DL-bound, which I have no proof is true, I think Jon Lieber would move into the rotation. He's a bit underrated. As for Hill, it might just be a lost season.

Mitch (OH)

ERock, if Sabathia goes to the NL, do you think he'll continue his dominance? He's been the best pitcher in baseball since May

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

I don't think it matters where he pitches, not one bit. If he's a Yankee, a Met, whatever happens he will be good. People overrate with all these trade discussions what happens to players. In general I find they remain the same, keep their skill set. Plus, if CC gets moved, it doesn't happen now, but when his value is highest to a desperate team on July 31.

Eric (Columbus)

Would you start Josh Banks in Yankee Stadium today? He's off to a great start, but that could be intimidating

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

There's no way I would use Banks today. I think he gets shelled. He allowed two homers in his last outing, and I expect at least 2 more today.

Harry (Cal)

Hey Eric this may be a weird question but have you ever heard of anyone making a living off of strictly playing fantasy sports?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

Believe it or not, I have. And to that I say, good for them!

Jordan (Toronto)

One Guy who could use a change of scenery is A.J. Burnett. I know this is a Gammons/Phillips question but whats the latest on that front?

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

Well, he apparently wants to play for the Cubs, we know that. Then again, so did Brian Roberts, and we saw what happened there. Whether Burnett gets moved or not, he will be overrated by fantasy owners when that trade somewhere happens, because everyone thinks he's underperforming now. He is what he is.

Xavier (Seattle)

Start Greinke today? He's been terrible recently, and even in his last "good" outing he had 7 walks.

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

Terrible? He didn't allow a run in his last outing, though yes, he walked 7 hitters. He permitted only 3 hits. I don't think this recent problem with walks is a trend, though. I keep starting him.

Mike (Boston)

Eric, I tend to disagree with you regarding Sabathia going to the NL... I think his value would slightly go up since he will be facing a pitcher in the lineup and vice versa if an NL pitcher goes to the AL his value will slightly go down...can you tell me otherwise?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

I can't disagree, but seeing as I already view him as a top 5 pitcher, how much better would he get? Above Johan, Peavy or Webb? Yes, ERAs go down a bit in the NL, but check the numbers, this year the ERAs in the two leagues are different. The AL ERA is lower than NL!

David: (Valencia, California)

Eric, Have you ever won a league by stock piling on hitting and having a bunch of replacement level starters and/or closers? The time has come to get creative.

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

I have done that to success quite a few times, but you're taking a risk on unheralded pitching that way. At some point in a lost season that's not a bad angle to take, and see if Nick Blackburn can be your ace. Sure, happens a lot.

Jeff (NY)

Start Morton today? Concerned about him facing Rangers in Texas in his 2nd big league start.

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Depends on other options. I do like Morton and wouldn't automatically sit him just because of the opponent. Yes, the Rangers score runs. Of course, last night against JoJo Reyes they scored only twice.

Andrew (Boston)

More HR's the rest of the year, Beltre or Headley?

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

I would not rank Headley over Beltre, not yet. For pure HRs, I still take Beltre, though I wouldn't be surprised if Headley hits 20. You know, Beltre could, too.

Jon (Cleveland)

Do you think Bedard can return to form, or are the M's so bad that it might not matter?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

That's a fallacy, saying that Bedard is pitching poorly because of his team. There are plenty of pitchers doing well on bad teams. Bedard just needs to improve. He's still a strikeout guy, so I wouldn't sell him cheap, and there is the chance he starts improving a lot soon.

Wes (Jacksonville. FL)

Is Mike Aviles a top 10 SS the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

In the AL Central, sure. For all 30 teams, no. Not yet. And I can't imagine he gets there this season. It's a nice start, and he does have some pop, but not top 10.

Jason (Scarsdale NY)

How high would you rank Lackey from here on out? between 5-10? I think he could push top be a top 5 guy from here. He's been flat out awesome since returning.

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

I agree. I had him top 10 before the injury sidelined him 6 weeks, and I don't see reason to be scared of him now. He's nearly top 10 already for me.

Rob (Boston)

My Middle Infield spot is hurting since I keep waiting for freddy Sanchez to turn it around. I am tired of waiting and my best options are Ray Durham or Jamey Carrol. What should I do?

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

I'd stick with Sanchez, though Carroll is hitting for average and he can steal a base. Still, Sanchez would figure to improve that batting average quite a bit the rest of the way.

Chris (Richmond, VA)

Is Masterson staying in the rotation with Colon on the DL?

Eric Karabell
  (11:46 AM)

Yes, he is, and that could continue a while. It sure looks like Masterson could be like Kyle Kendrick, and stick in the rotation all season. He's not overpowering, not a big K guy, but Clay Buchholz is ready, and Masterson is still there. Wouldn't shock me if Buchholz is pitching in relief in September to help the Sox, because that's where the team need might be.

Jesse (Chicago)

Who do you like better the rest of the way, Greinke or Galaragga for Detroit?

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

I do think Galarraga is for real, but I still stick with Greinke. More upside, more K potential, and a better track record. I own Galarraga in a dynasty league, had him buried for a few seasons, and voila he's good. He's really not supposed to be this good.

Johnson (Salt Lake City)

Is it time to bail on Furcal? The news just keep getting more discouraging and he is taking up valuable space. I hate to drop him and then see him get hot, but as Stephania said, back issues can linger. Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

I wouldn't drop him, no matter the situation. He's obviously an important player to fantasy owners, so let's hope he's back in three or four weeks. But yes, the news isn't getting much better.

Ricky (Houston)

So with everything you said about Liriano, should I drop Marmol for him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

Marmol is tied for No. 45 in baseball in strikeouts, despite not starting any games. He's ahead of Bedard, Snell, Verlander, a lot of good K pitchers. I'd try to find someone else to drop, but Liriano is looking good and should be recalled in the news few weeks.

Matt (CHI)

Why do none of the fantasy chat writers ever say anything about Harang except that he is unlucky and a strong buy-low? How soon is this rebound suppose to happen? Is he a start tonight?

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

What do you want us to do, lie? He's not having a bad season, he's just not winning. His ERA is fine. Luck doesn't always even out, however, so I'm not saying he will win more the rest of the way, but he's a trusted top-15 SP how I would never bench. There is no rebound, he's been fine.

JB - Memphis

Is Joe Blanton still on your team?

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

I don't think I have him anywhere, but if I did, it's not a definite I would cut him after last night. He had a bad outing. He's not an ace, but more like a No. 3 or 4 for fantasy, and he's been bad of late. But he is durable, and you kinda know what you're getting.

Steve (VA)

What's going on with Granderson? Hitting 8/9?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Against a lefty, it makes sense. I doubt this is a long-term thing. Granderson should end up around 20/20, so don't give up yet.

Al (hartford)

Swisher or David Murphy rest of the way? key stat I'm looking for is OPS

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

I would go with Swisher, expecting some rebound, and for Murphy to slow down some.

Joe (Jugaville, Maine)

Are you concerned with Carlos Zambrano's injured shoulder?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Not yet. Not unless the MRI shows something's wrong. Seems to me Zambrano has been an injury risk before, and nothing was ever wrong.

Fernando (Pembroke Pines)

I heard that during the off-season Alex Rios had tinkered with his swing, is that true? Could that be the reason for the lack of HR? He hits alot more ground outs then Fly ball outs.

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Could be. What a disappointment. He's got 20/20 ability. Rios could easily get hot on a moment's notice and have a 7 or 8 HR month, so I'd be patient with him.

Steve (LA)

Eric, is Joba Chamberlain startable today at home against the lowly Padres. projected numbers please

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

Joba is startable every game now. I would not sit him, especially against one of the poorest hitting teams in baseball and against Josh Banks. This looks like a 10-2 type game.

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

OK, on that note my time is up, and I thank you for the questions and interest in this chat. Another chat session comes along later today with the underrated Keith Lipscomb. Be nice to him. Adios!
