Good morning and Happy Canada Day to everyone... I'm sure you're all wearing your traditional red, white and um... leaf. Time for an hour of fantasy goodness. Let's get it started....
A.J. please help, Christopher Harris has got me all worked up about Brett Myers turning it aound in the second half, do you agree? Myers just cleared waivers, would you drop Izzy or Kershaw for him?
I'm not a Myers supporter. I don't like the park he plays in for pitchers and he's never been anything much more than a .500 pitcher as a starter. I don't share Chris' optimism.
Hey AJ, always appreciate the helpful chats. I'm a McLouth/Pence/Bruce/Quentin owner. Not worried about the last one, but should I be worried about the first three, and who should I move in a trade for Kazmir?
Any or all.... I just wrote a column (should be posting later today) on teams that are due for offensive slumps and Pittsburgh was right at the top of the list. I think Nate's production is due for a slide. If not a keeper league, though, I wouldn't have issue with trading any of the three.
Good morning AJ! Kevin Slowey just landed on our waiver wire after he pitches a 3-hit shutout against the Brew Crew. Should I go gobble him up? Happy 4th! POW!
Minnesota riding a nice streak, but I think the run support won't be there and not all gung ho on Kev. Spot starter at best.
Would you drop Bruce for Granderson or try and hold on to Bruce?
Curtis. Not that Bruce isn't good... but he's not going to be "good" until 2009.
How smart am I for dropping Tulo and picking up concussion Church?
Are you suffering from a concussion? Actually, I like Church, but I think the Mets aren't going to have that offensive surge that their fans seem to think is just around the bend. Tulo certainly struggled before the injury, but I think he'll manage to get to 15 HR.
Is Price going to do what Joba did last year and get called up late in the year and be a starter next season. I have the #1 waiver in my 15-team keeper league and want to know if I you think he will get called up this season. Thanks.
He may get a September look-see, but I can't see the Rays calling on Price, unless they completely fall out of the race... which appears less likely by the day.
What can stop the Cubs?
A road trip.
More Valuable Micheal Young or Ian Kinsler?
In a fantasy context, Kinsler. Whether or not Young adds certain other intangibles to the Rangers, I know not.
What can stop the Cubs? What has been stopping them the last 100 years. Big Mike?
Start Unit at home tonight against the brew crew?
My feeling on Randy is that he's healthier than he's been in a good long time. Certainly, any given night could be his last, but I'm willing to gamble on him while he's feeling at his best.
On most nights, who would you go with: Burrell or Nady?
Most nights... Burrell. If the team is on the road and Howard is facing a pitcher he usually kills, then maybe I go with X... otherwise, I don't think twice.
How would you rank the following catchers for this year and also for keeper leagues: Clement, Saltalamacchia, Napoli
I think Clement is 1 and Salty 2, Napoli 3rd for keepers. For this season, I go Salty 1, Napoli 2, Clement 3.
When will the July Rankings be posted?
I'm not sure... I think we may be doing a super deluxe All-Star break edition to get you guys through the "downtime".
Can you rank these three closers: Brian Wilson, CJ Wilson, and Brandon Lyon?
If the D-backs were actually winning, this would be a lot easier. I go Brian first... Lyon second...CJ third. Maybe its just bad timing, but EVERY TIME I switch to a Rangers game and Wilson is in, he gives up a hit.
What do you think the odds are the Brandon Morrow keeps the closer role when Putz comes off the DL??
I think he keeps it at first, but if Putz is healthy, he gets the role back. It just might not be instant.
What do you think of grabbing Thames while Magglio is out?
Perfectly safe to do so... Thames was getting PT before the injury. Clete Thomas is the guy who might get the boost in ABs. However, neither guy is close to Magglio's value.
I can stop the Cubs! Right, Aramis?
Iwamura, Kendrick, or Polanco... are either decent 2B in 10 team mixed? I am thinking about trading Kinsler for 2 stud pitchers.
I actually think Placido is very undervalued. Now, he's nowhere in Ian's class... but if you're improving tenfold in pitching, then you should do it.
Who do you like better from here on forward, Billingsley or Harang?
I can't believe how bad Harang has been doing... but I still like him better than Chad going forward. Peripheral stats aren't all that different.
Any word on Miggy Cabrera? just day to day?
The DL has been floated as a possibility... reports say we'll know after a visit to the Docs today.
Which MR will have the best value in a standard H2H 5 cat league (W, K, SV, WHIP, ERA)? Marmol, Izzy, Broxton, Howell, Bell, someone else?
I like Marmol and Bell. And those fancy Aussie pirates dancing around you.
c jack/v wells for verlander/j.lopez Thoughts?
I like the jackson/wells side better... but as usual it all depends on team needs and who fills in the roster spots after the deal is done.
Putting injuries or other problems aside- which is hard to do- Do you think Bradley continues to produce at around the same level in the 2nd half?
The scary thing about the Rangers is that they're actually under-producing for the amount/type of hits they're getting. Injuries are the only thing that will prevent Milton from continuing the hot pace.
Is Chipper going on the DL?
I'd say that's all but a done deal... he's limited to at best PH duty right now, and Cox isn't comfortable using him in that role either.
Does Andruw Jones have any value when he returns?
No. See that fork sticking out of him?
Hey AJ, I just traded Christian Guzman, and Jonathan Sanchez for Justin Verlander (was able to pick up Aviles) GOOD TRADE?
I wouldn't have made the deal. I don't like Verlander this season, and with the Tigers offense falling apart by the second, I don't see many victories in his future. Plus I think Guzman is very underrated.
FOOTBALL KEEPER, PLEASE HELP AJ!!!, who should I keep - Romo for a 6, Lynch for a 4, Graham for a 10 and Turner for a 14. I can keep 2. 1QB, 2RB, 3WR. Thanks!
I'd keep Graham for sure. Gambler? Go with Turner and grab best RB round 1.
Yeah, but Verlander could have a huge second half....Sanchez could fall apart (and there is way less run support in SF) Also have furcal coming back for me so guzman was disposable
Hey, if any of KNEW what will happen, we'd be millionaires. Verlander COULD go 10-0 or get eaten by an alligator tomorrow. That's why the game is FUN... nobody knows.
i just traded ichiro for volquez, i need k's, whip and wins, the guy i traded with needs steals and runs, who got the better end of the deal?
I think you both got what you needed, so it's win-win. Especially as the season moves along, "value" takes on a different meaning... it doesn't have to be even. A-Rod for Gomez could be legit if all you need to win your league is a few points in steals.
What to do with the Rockies...what are your projections on Holliday going forward...any change in projections if he gets moved???
Certainly Holliday's home makes a difference. Not just the Coors factor, but any new situation, the players around him make you re-evaluate. I think the Rockies are due for a second-half surge. I keep Holliday... actual #s? I don't know, but I do see him as a top-15 hitter.
What's with all the affirmation requests...
You're good enough, you're smart enough... and goshdarnit... people like you.
Play sheffy or the awful francoeur tonight?
But tell us how you really feel, Kyle.
Matt Garza or Ricky Nolasco? I am asking for your opinion and I realize that either one may be eaten by an Alligator.
Especially in Florida, right? I like Garza. Tampa more likely to produce for him, and while I don't expect 1-hitters every night... he's for real.
Looking to trade Johan for some offense, which deal, if either would you take for him: DLee/Harang or Uggla/Marmol?
Uggla certainly gets you more offense, but I'm not sure if the hit in pitching is worth it. Lee/Harang would be a better deal... and if Harang turns it around, you can always turn him into more offense later on.
KEEPER LEAGUE debate question - can you ever veto a trade where a team out of contention deals non-keeper eligible players for keepers?? The last place team in our league traded A-Rod, Peavy and Ryan Howard (none can be kept) for Jay Bruce and Justin Upton (both are keeper-eligible). Vetoable or no?
I think you make those decisions when you decide to be in a keeper league. I think it's way too much to give away and far too soon to be packing this season in.... I'd be concerned and certainly want to hear justification for it beyond the "keeper" stauts. Same trade could be made in a month. What's the rush?
Another veto question, non-keeper league: Jeter for Y.Escobar...vetoable? I hate to veto, but this just seems so unbalanced.
I don't think this is unbalanced at all. Look at the stats without the names and there's little to complain about.
Barmes or Hardy for the 2nd Half of season?
So much not to like about Hardy's 2008. I'd lean toward Clint.
HA! There's no alligators in Minnesota!!
Quentin or Josh Hamilton from here on out? I can trade one for Peavy.
I'd trade Quentin and take a shot with Hamilton. The average is going to come tumbling down a bit more, but I think the power numbers keep.
Word on Byrnes is that he's heading back to the DL today after reaggravating his hamstring injury. Drop him for red-hot Swisher?
As the saying goes, a Nick in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Is it possible the alligators got a hold of Travis Hafner before the season started?
TRADE! 5x5 league with OPS. I was offered ROLLINS for VOLQUEZ and CARLOS QUENTIN.
I don't go near that deal. Rollins value is so dependent on other players, while Volquez can K 10 all by himself. Plus I think CQ holds his own in fantasy value vs. J-Roll.
HEY you guys need to get off my back and tail.
Sweating Guzman and J. Sanchez over Verlander is exactly the problem with fantasy "experts". Could they end up with better second half numbers (sure), but the odds are that the Verlander (proven guy) will be the better option. Hyping rookies and hot streaks over proven studs is bad advice...so is answering a question with "if we all knew the answer we'd be millionaires". I mean, it's your job to provide answers. How about "um, the odds are that this person will have a better second half, so take that chance".
My answer was that I would not make the deal. I don't think Verlander has a good second half.
Time for one more...
Nathan, why you trashing the experts yet sitting here reading every word he types? Be careful, he knows alligators...
Buzzer beater! I got offered D. Wright and K-Rod for J-Ham and Quentin. Would you pull the trigger?
Probably not. I see the Mets going into a death spiral pretty soon but hey "um, the odds are that those people will have a better second half, so take that chance"
Thanks all. Been a lot of fun... watch out for those pesky reptiles and we'll be back next time... TMR up at 3pm. Enjoy!
