Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Tom Luginbill

Greetings and welcome to what may turn out to be our shortest chat of all time. With all the sun, great weather in the middle of July, it is actually good to see that people are outdoors instead of in front of their computers so let's get to those of you who are truly committed!!

Jon (Atlanta, GA)

Just heard Tennessee has added ESPN 150 Watch players DJ Hunter and Antonio Foster. What does this do for the Vols, and why are they having so much success early--they tend to secure later committments.

Tom Luginbill
  (3:04 PM)

Tennessee just entered into our top 10 today dn deservedly so. Currently, we have confirmed Antonio Foster, but not yet DJ Hunter. Regardless, this clas has more playmakers in it than either of the last two in our opinion and ne OC david Clawson has got to be a big part of this with their new incoming, wide open scheme. Same thing is happening at Auburn and Michigan.

mathieu (san francisco)

Is it just me or are the Buffs a little behind the curve in recruiting this year with only a few commitments, or have teams like Ohio State skewed the perception of what is a good amount of commitments to have at this time of the year? Please tell me hawk will be able to equal or surpass last years class. thanks!!!

Tom Luginbill
  (3:06 PM)

Bingo! Numbers are very deceptive at this early juncture and don't buy into it for a second. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Colorado will be fine in the end. They are building and should continue to improve on the gridiron which will certainly help once again on the recruiting trail.

Tyler (Raleigh, NC)

What are your thoughts on Donte Moss? Is he a top 50 player?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:09 PM)

Nationally, probably not. Positionally, we think he may end up being a top 25 prospect. Huge upside as an edge rusher. When it is alls aid and done, we will likely have evaluated at least 150 DE's in this class so top 25 player puts that into perspective on how good that is. Good coup for UNC right now.

Jonathan (Westerville, Ohio)

Which team has the best core of players at the defensive back position this season?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:11 PM)

You could argue Rutgers might. Very good team speed on defense right now.

Brian (Portland, OR)

Hi Tom - your thoughts on a favorite for Tate Forcier? Could he end up in the Big 10 with PSU or UM?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:12 PM)

In our opinion, Forcier is going to bask in the limelight for as long as he can. His recruiting process has been about publicity and when you commit, you lose some of that. He keeps dwindling his list down, but I don't see him making a choice for quite some time.

Joey, P-Way, NJ

Will my Scarlet Knights convince any of the NJ to ND verbals to switch and stay home in the Garden State?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:14 PM)

Honestly, I would not worry about it. Schiano and the rest of the staff will make up those guys from other states like Florida where there is better team speed and athleticism and more to choose from. Don't get caught up in what ND does in comparision to Rutgers. Ask yourself this-- what program would you rather have right now? Pretty easy answer as a fan huh?

Nick (SLC)

Tom, What do you think of Utah's and BYU's Recruiting classes and how do you think Whittingham does in recruiting? Considering Urban was there before him.

Tom Luginbill
  (3:17 PM)

Well, BYU has 12 commits right now which is a high amount for a mid-major, but they are riding high. Remember, Both them and Utah are recruiting a certain type of player too. OC Terry Alletto is a player for the Cougs. The Utes have six guys right now and three are WR's. Urban inherited a lot of players and Whittingham has had to build more. Both programs should have big years.

Jason (Miami, FL)

Tom, Whats the latest on Kevin Newsome, as there are reports he is going to de-commit and switch to either WVU or VT? Also, can Rich Rod keep up his recruiting momentum for a Top 5 class?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:19 PM)

That would not surprise me at all if he de-commits because we think they would move him to another position and he wants to be a QB. Top five is lofty in my opinion, but I can tell you there skill players will be very good.

Kevin (Chicago)

Is Kirk Ferentz taking the rest of the decade off to count his money instead of recruit?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:20 PM)

Had to post this just because it was amusing.

Jon (Charleston, SC)

Anything new on Jarvis Jones? All indications point to him being one of the top LBs in this class, yet there is rarely ever anything new info on him as far as recruiting.

Tom Luginbill
  (3:22 PM)

He is this years Julio Jones as far as keeping quiet which just leads to more and more anticipation. If he wants privacy, then he should have it. He is 17.

Keith (Phoenix)

What is the latest on Devon Kennard? He trimmed his list to 5 schools, but do you know if there is one rising above the rest that he is leaning towards?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:23 PM)

I would be surprised if it isn't USC or Arizona State.

Shaka (Toronto)

Tom... you'd honestly take the Rutgers 'program' over ND??? Are you kidding???? One 3 win season aside, how many times has Rutgers made the BCS? Just compare the last couple of years recruiting classes... what on earth are you talking about.

Tom Luginbill
  (3:26 PM)

You misunderstood. Right now, as it stands, which program is on the upswing and making positive waves. Forget history, where the program stands right now, Rutgers fans are probably a whole lot happier than ND fans are. I don't have a stake in the race, just looking at the two right now it is a fair argument.

Thanks for joining us on this hot summer day. Time to move on until next week. Not a ton of questions, but some good ones and we thank you.
