Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Man, it's great to be back chatting with all of you. I had a phenomenal vacation, hanging with my family and my 2 bro's and their families too in Beaver Creek, CO. But I truly missed talking (albeit in very short sentences) hoops with all of you. "Congratulations on all your success. You smell terrific!".

Dawson (Phoenix)

DT, Robin Lopez, stiff or skilled? High-energy contributor or big-time benchwarmer?

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Not at all stiff. Nice energy guy, at minimum.

Tony LA, CA

Hi torpeedo-eshh You rock lets go greece to upset US. Greece is a better basketball team and will pull the upset. US will maske it close but Greece should pull this one quite easily.

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Easily is a bit much. But seeing Greece win would not be a shocker at all.

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Easily is a bit much. But seeing Greece win would not be a shocker at all.

Os (Jersey)

Thorpe, what are the chances Gordon staying in Chicago? what are they doing there?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Very slight. I think his reps are asking for too much.

Vince (Sac, CA)

Hey Mr. Thorpe, tell me what you think about the Ron Atest trade, but in the Kings perspective.? And what do you think about Jason Thompson from this summer? thanks

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I loved it. In a sense, they'll get two top 5 picks out of it. Green would have been a top 5 guy this year (probably) and they'll likely finish bottom five this year.

Zac (Philly)

A.I., 6 years, 80 million. Way too much. Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

If indeed that's what he's getting as a guarantee, I'd say it was a little too much. But they had to keep him, I think.

Corey (Chicago)

Kobe has been 1 for 15 from 3 so far in the first two Olympic games. Should this really be an area of concern for the US team, or do you think they will come out sharp and shoot better against a physical Greece team?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I think he will be more locked in from here on.

Will (Ellicot City, MD)

Your chats rock out loud! Who starts at the 1 and 5 for the Heat when the season opens?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I honestly do not know. Perhaps one or both positions will be filled by guys not on their roster as of now.

Richard (Las Vegas)

Coach Thorpe, I got a chance to watch the Vegas Camp with the NBA players last week, and everyone was shocked at how great a person Tyrus Thomas was. He seemed so eager to learn and looked great on the court too. Thanks for helping such a talented player learn how to handle himself.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Tyrus is one of the most loving guys I've ever taught. He's truly a blessing. And remember, he's still just 21. We must allow all young people to grow up and find themselves. That he's finding his own stride now is great news for Chicago fans.

MO Williams, Hopefully Cleveland

Would I be a good fit with the King?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Indeed you would.

T.Dunc (SATX)

J. Gist for spurs: big man contributor, pine rider, gone to europe for seasoning?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Signed in Europe the other day.

Joey (LA)

I think I would also like to check our Beaver Creek. How was it?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Great for families-we had 7 kids from 4 to 8 years of age and they had a blast.

Rich (San Jose)

YO Thorpe! Impressions overall & predictions for USA basketball? USA! USA! USA!

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Honestly, I like our whole plan now to field a competitive team. But I'm not sure we "get it" yet. Fielding our best team and getting them together early does not mean we'll waltz to a gold medal. I'm frustrated that we have not figured that out yet.

SPAIN

USA gambles to much on defense trying to get the steal, do you think that smart teams like GReece or Spain can Use back doors + more size inside to face the USA TEAM??

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Of course. But playing defense that way is smart for USA, still.

VanPoops, PDX

You see the little reel of Oden working out yesterday? He looks huge!!! 15 and 12 too much as rook?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I didn't. But a double double average is likely.

Dave (MN)

I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Ace. I'll have the plumbing checked immediately.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

We have a winner!! I think Ace Ventura could get even Mrs. Costanza to laugh.

ace

Is your number still 911? Alrighty then!

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Exactly.

Michael Oakland, CA

Can you get word to Vanessa to fedex Kobes jumper to China ASAP? Thank you, Mr. Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

He'll be fine. Relax.

Frank(Minneapolis)

Besides the whole being white thing, compare Love's potential to Bird.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Different planet. One is a top 3 all-time player, the other has a chance to be a solid player, perhaps an all-star.

Mike (CA)

How come Melo's been playing so poorly? He was the best player at the 2006 Worlds and the 2007 American Championships.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

He looks heavy to me.

Joe Dumars (Detroit)

Will Kwame at the 5 and Sheed back at the 4 get us a title?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Joe, I'd hate to ban a legend, but your getting close to one.

Lamar (New York)

Should Chris Paul start over Jason Kidd?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Yes.

Zach (NYC)

Settle a debate. The best 3 in the world after Lebron is Pierce, T-Mac, or Melo?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Pierce in a runaway.

Igor(Newton, MA)

Do you see the Celtics making any more moves this offseason? Whatever happened to the possibility of D-Miles playing for us?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

I think they are done. I've no clue about Miles.

James (OH)

Bird a top-3 all time player. Who are the other 2 and what order?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Mike Moreau and I started the "Jordan Magic Bird" club in the mid-90's. No one else has been invited, though we considered "considering" LeBron 2 years ago, but ultimately decided to wait.

Paul(Lithuania)

Is it honest for Bynum to be asking for a max?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Sure. But he's not deserving of it at all.

Tom (Toledo, OH)

Is there still any debate as to who the best player on this USA team (and probably the world) is? Kobe goes 1-15 from 3 pt range, jacks up tough shot after tough shot (on an all star team!) and despite being the teams "defensive stopper" it is lebron flying all over the court getting steals and monster blocks, while also scoring, rebounding, and passing better. to me, after watching them both play vs. the celtics in the playoffs and now team usa, its pretty clear who the best player in the world is - LEBRON!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I think most "experts" would say LeBron is the world's best player now. But one expert thinks it's D wade, when healthy.

Paul (Chicago)

Hey Dave, Serioualy, it must be good to be you. First Haslem, then Martin, and now Deng-all sign for money above what was expected of them when they first got into the league. Isn't it time to leave IMG and open up your own place, I'd think you'd have a long line of students.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Yes, I like my life. A devoted wife of 18 years and 2 great kids, what's not to like. I should not be defined as a teacher by just a few success stories. Though I am thrilled for all 3 of those guys. As far as IMG, my staff here is world class, so remember my number one rule as a teacher. "It's not about me".

Bill Russell (Boston, MA)

You forgot to mention me in the "Jordan Russell Magic Bird" Club

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Check out Russell's fg%.

Jason (Brooklyn)

You can have Wade. I'll stick with Duncan until the wheels fall off.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

I can't argue with you. What a special, special player.

Paul (Lithuania)

You think Kleiza deserves a starting position in the NBA? he's doing exceptionally well in the olympics right now, pretty sure you've been following him...

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Without a doubt.

Daryl (Richmond, VA)

Seriously...how much does Kobe making a Finals run factor into his shot being off right now? Surely his legs must be begging for a well-deserved vacation, right??

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

No factor at all.

M. Speights (Philly)

20 nightly frontcourt minutes on my playoff contending team just appeared when my new homie J. Smith did up his ACL. Am I ready to make them mine?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Possibly. That was a big break for him, and he does have the talent to help them right away.

David (CHI)

Yeah, Russell's fg% was 44%. He's not in my top 3...

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Ouchy.

Jason (IA)

You and your friend Mike should think about joining the "Magic" club...Mr. Jordan and Mr. Bird are there simply to park cars and take food orders...

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Magic's been my guy since 1978, when he appeared on the pre-season SI cover. But ignoring Bird and MJ is just dumb.

john mn minneapolis

who are the top 5 pointguards in nba right now?in order

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

CP DW SN TP GA

ben plattsburgh

just wondering if you have ever seen any film of earl "the goat"? Kareem thought he was the greatest who ever laced em' up......

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Saw the movie. Read lots about him. Great stuff.

Jesse (Taipei)

Are you in Beijing? I'm right around the corner... sort of

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

I wish. London in 4 years-count me in!

ted (Baltimore)

Will the Suns compete for the title this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Not at all, as presently constructed.

Neil Auricchio Atlantic City, NJ

How does Thaddeus look in Vegas this summer? He's the key to my 76ers taking a big step because we know what to expect from Brand, Iggy, and Miller.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Not great, in terms of consistency. But he's a terrific talent.

Brian (Boston, MA)

What about Chalmers' chances for the Heat's starting 1 spot this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Hard to imagine starting a rookie 2nd round pick.

Bill Russell (Boston, MA)

Can I borrow one of your fingers, I only have 10 for my 11 rings.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Funny. So does that mean Horry is better than Magic and Bird?

Corey (Chicago)

Thorpe, talk to me about Derrick Rose? Should we be concerned here in Chicago about his knee tendinitis? He is so young, so athletic....

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Not yet. I know lots of players that have outgrown tendinitis.

ben plattsburgh

Am I banned for thinking that Hakeem was a better player than shaq?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Not at all. It's a legit debate.

Travis (Boston, MA)

pargo to spurs? good idea?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Absolutely.

O-Magic (you guessed it)

Who should we be after right now to take us to the next level? KTHXBAI.

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

A backup pg and a great rebounder at the 4.

MLR (indianapolis, IN)

What do you think of Duhon in NYC? I think he can average a double double.

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

I don't.

J Kidd (Dallas)

Really? You'd take arenas over me as a point guard?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Have you seen yourself play lately?

Ben (Springfield, IL)

What under the radar team should we all look out for next season?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

If Miami makes a deal or two they could make some noise-Wade is that good. And Portland should make a big step forward.

Chuck (Baton Rouge, La)

Mr Thorpe, What is your prediction for the Hornets this year? If the team stays healthy.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Similar to last year. Solid playoff team, with title chances.

Jon (Mad-town)

When its all said and done will Duncan join the Bird, Magic and MJ club?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

You know what-I think Mike and i need to address that in our next committee meeting.

Jesse (Taipei)

What's Horry's fate? Any reason Spurs didn't resign Barry?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Besides his being horrible now?

AB (SC)

RE: Kobe/LBJ--If their relative performance against the Celts is fair game, how about their relative performances against the Spurs? Also, I don't put Wade in the conversation with those two.

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

2 years ago Wade was the best player in the NBA.

Chuck (Baton Rouge, La)

Mr Thorpe, Where does Pete Maravich fall on your list of greatest players of all time?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

For NBA players? He didn't make the list.

James (Berlin)

How many busts occur due to a lack of good player development from certain teams? How many busts could have been all star caliber or do you believe that it is usually just meant to be?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

I'm not sure about all-star level, but dozens of players every year would improve greatly if developed properly.

Bob (Boston, MA)

Number 6 pg has to be Rondo, no?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

No.

Chris (Dubuque, IA)

Are the Bulls a playoff team this year now that Deng is signed long-term, Hughes and Gooden have a full season, Rose is added, and Gordon is most likely gone? If not, what more can they do?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

They'll have a chance. But I wouldn't expect 50 wins, that's for sure.

Justin (Dallas, TX)

What do you think it will take for the Mavs to get back to being a Championship contender?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Wholesale changes.

ben plattsburgh

I think Darko counts as a guy whose bust was partially caused by being horribly developed by the organization

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

That, and his own suckitude. Meaning, his work ethic sucked.

Paul (Toronto)

Have you seen Roko Ukic play any games at the Olympics? Will he have any impact on the Raptors next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

He's nice. Should be the backup pg.

Andrew (Chicago)

Hey Thorpedo, I ws having a debate with one of my friends about A.I. being a top 25 player in NBA history, he's gotta be the best little man, whats your take?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Definitely a top little man, but not a top 25 guy.

Dave Tustin Ca.

Dave, I don't think you were the only expert who thought Wade was the best. I believe Hollinger had it that way too. Anyway, with the way Wade looks right now, it is hard to imagine that with Marion, Beasley, Haslem and Jones that that group isn't a lock for the playoffs. And, could even make some noise in the playoffs.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I still think they need to fill those 2 holes.

John

Who is your favoorite player?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

A little 7 year old, who's just now learning the game of basketball. Goes by the name of Max Thorpe.

Sam (Ohio)

"Suckitude".....that was awesome.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I thought the description was apt-thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I thought the description was apt-thanks!

John (Detroit)

Not arguing w/ your PG list but when does Chauncey Billups' name begin to get mentioned? 7? 8? Later????

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Top 8.

Mike, Denver

excellent Ace quote! What is Denver's long term plans? I'm a little confused. Wait until AI is off the books? "Aguado? Good call!"

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Yes, I think they'll just sit tight for a season.

Pedro (LA)

Can anyone come and workout at IMG or is it only for high level ballers?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Anyone.

Rob (Baltimore)

Are you in the school of thought that Pippen was a top 20 all time player, or that he was made to look a ton better by Jordan than what he actually was?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Not a top 20 guy, but a top 50 one.

Will (Houston)

Little Man Contest: Allen Iverson vs. Calvin Murphy

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

AI.

Joseph K (State College, PA)

Who do you think will have the most impact as a rookie this year in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

The Beas.

ritchie, sf ca

Thorpey.. GA???

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Agent 0.

Harold (Los Angeles, Ca)

What are the chances of 2 on 2 basketball being an Olympic sport someday?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Zilch.

Keith (Iowa City, IA)

Little Man Contest: AI vs Tiny Archibald.

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

AI, in overtime.

Mark (LA)

What in the world are the Clippers doing? Can you recall a more ridiculous hodge podge of talent assembled?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Sure, previous versions of the same team.

Paul (Houston)

Greg Oden overhyped by Portland fans?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Probably not.

JIM, Birmingham

Thorpedo!! With the Hawks just squeaking into the playoffs last year, they still have a LONG way to go. However, they have a very young team. With a healthy Bibby, and Horford and Smith getting another year of experience under their belt, do they make it back to the playoffs this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I'd guess not.

Justin, DC

Wow Coach Thorpedo, I never actually looked at Russell's stats, just watched SportsCentury and listened to old stories from my grandfather, but his stats are weak overall besides rebounds.

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

His blocked shots and wins were very special too. But he's not a top 5 center, to my eyes.

Jacob Garza (Levelland, TX)

Jason Kidd is at least top 8 right?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

No, never, never. Well, maybe 3 years ago.

Bobby

Thorpe, Probably not, i'd guess not...great responses... so who goes overseas first. LBJ or kobe?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Neither.

Jesse (Taipei)

Any word on the mascot for OKC?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Some sort of whirling dervish, I think.

The Big O

Hey Thorpe, what does it take to get an invitation into your little club?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Oscar, you get invited to our functions, so be happy with that.

JIM, Birmingham

SHIKAKA! Care to elaborate about the Hawks?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Losing JC hurts, and a few other teams improved more.

Faysal (Cleveland)

Do you think Lebron will get a championship in the next two years? I say they would have won this year if Cleveland beat Boston game 7, which was very close to happening (Maybe if Gibson was healthy for that wide open three!)

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

No chance unless they take care of their pg problems.

Paul (Lakeland, FL)

Coming from the Boston area your comments are blasphemous regarding Russell. I've heard it said that if he really wanted to score 40 a night he probably could have but he strictly focused on his defense. Seriously though you don't consider him a top 5 center? Why?

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

So you're suggesting he missed all those shots on purpose?

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (LA)

I am the best center of all time.

David Thorpe
  (1:02 PM)

Affirmative.

David Thorpe
  (1:03 PM)

Gotta run. Thanks everyone. See you next week.
