Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

No introductions today. Have a fantasy football draft to prepare for. Fire away.

Dave (Denver)

David, Toyota engine question if you please. I have heard that the engines used in the Toyotas are a combination of GM blocks and Ford heads. Is that true?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

I've heard the same thing, but honestly don't have the answer for you. Will check on it.

Johnny (Newark, NJ)

Any idea when they'd call the race on Sat if there is a hurricane? No sense driving down if there ain't gonna be a race. Do you know where to find out about cancelling the race?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

They have tentative plans to run the race on Sunday afternoon early if it gets called. Not sure when they'd make that call. It all depends on the wetaher pattern. If they see a break in the storm around race time they'll certainly go for it, but I understand your concern about driving there for no reason.

Tyler (Snohomish,Wa)

So Dario Franchini is going back to indy car next season, will Sam Hornish Jr. shortly follow?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

I believe Hornish is committed to at least one more season. He's on more solid ground with sponsors and had has some success.

Stephen Johnson (Houston, Tx)

Who are your top 5 picks for Richmond? Any sleepers? Where will Sorenson finish?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhart Jr., Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin. Sleepers? David Ragan. Sorenson? 32nd.

Nick, Alabama

What do you think about Franchitti heading back to IRL. Do you think we will ever see him in a stock car again?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

He hasn't ruled out a return. It's just the situation has changed since he left with the merger and the series going to more road courses. And yes, he made the right decision. He struggled on the track and with bringing sponsorship to the organization. We'll all miss seeing Ashley Judd at the track, though.

becky,tn

whats your fantasy football draft looking like

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Don't draft until tonight. I have the third pick. Any suggestions?

jake (Indy)

whats up david? I just wanted to get your opinion on why Jeff Gordon has not been performing very well lately? Is it his crew chief, daddy time, or has he just lost that awesome skill that he once had?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

It's not the crew chief. Letarte led him to one of his best seasons ever a year ago. Gordon just hasn't gotten comfortable in the new car. Until he learns to drive it loose he'll continue down this path of mediocrity.

Bryan (VA)

Have you ever considered changing your first name to "Fig"

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Was called Fig the first 17 years of my life. Thanks for reminding me.

becka,va

will stremme still drive for rusty now that he has a cup ride

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Checking into that. It all depends on what Penske wants at this point.

Brian, Levittown,Pa

David, how do you see Junior doing in the chase? Do you think Kyle Busch will run away with it?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

As I've said repeatedly over the past month, I still believe this is Jimmie Johnson's Chaes to lose. He's won the last two and until somebody takes the title away there's no reason to think otherwise. If you remember, Gordon had a great first 26 races last season and wound up second. As for Earnhardt, he's proven to be no better than a third- to 15-place driver this season, so they'll need to step it up to have any chance.

Tom (Chattanoga)

David why on earth hasn't eury jr. been fired yet? Or is it Junior's inability to drive a not so good racecar that has been costing this team big time.

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

First, Earnhardt hasn't been that bad. He's been in the top four in points almost all season. As for Eury Jr., I still don't believe he's the problem.

juan (puerto rico)

stremme in the 12? wow i guess we will see him off the pace just like he did in the 40.......

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Hey, that car won the Daytona 500. Of course, we haven't heard much from it since.

Mike Hunt (fla)

instead of fig, I would have wanted to be called Sir Issac...... thats just me though....

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

I'll take the Kyle Busch rout and say as long as I'm being noticed people can call me whatever.

Jeff (East Bay, CA)

Any news on a crew chief or sponsor for Newman? If it turns out not to be Borland (hoping it will be!), who do you think would be the best fir for him?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I am hearing Army, and an announcement could come this weekend. Make sense particularly if Jay Frye, who brought Army to Ginn Racing, leaves Red Bull to work for Stewart-Haas. Haven't heard on the crew chief yet.

Nick (New York)

how much of a break down does Kyle need to have to not win this thing?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

He could do what he's been doing and if Jimmie Johnson gets on the roll he did last season Busch still would finish second. I'm not sure you'll see a breakdown from Busch as much as you'll see others step up their game.

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Oh, I seldom pick a QB until the seventh or eighth round. I typically go RB, RB, RB or RB, RB, WR, RB.

Robert (Denver, CO)

Does Logano make the race this weekend, and how will he finish?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Let's put it this way, Who would you pick, Logano or Kyle Petty or one of the others that must qualify on speed make it?

Bud (charlotte, nc)

Do you think 10 races for the chase is too many? That's one-quarter of the season.

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

It seems like a fair number. You can dig a small hole and still get out of it as Johnson has done in the past.

chris (new jersey)

i wanna know where i can fill an application at to drive the 45? cuz if kyle petty is getting paid to drive off the pace ...maybe i can stay on the lead lap ......

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

If you can stay on the lead lap I'm sure they'd give you a look

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Hey David, Have you heard anything about who will drive the #41 for Ganassi next year?????

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Nothing yet. A guy like Scott Riggs would be a good fit.

Danny (NC)

If Army goes to Stewart Hass where does that leave Almirola.. Any Idea who his sponsor is?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

It puts DEI to three cars likely because they already are looking for sponsorship for Regan Smith.

Jake (Philly)

How big of a splash does Joey make next season at the Cup level?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

I'll say he wins at least one race and is at least knocking at the door for the Chase.

Paulie, new jersey

Were you at the race on Sunday? What was up with all of the empty seats?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

No, I was on the beach working on my tan. As for the empty seats, they've been empty for some time there.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

David, With Dario going to Ganassi in IRL, where will Dan Wheldon end up???

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

He is going to stay in the IRL and run for Panther Racing.

Pete (Mobile, Alabama)

I just want to know why on earth we are watching the sprint cup at fontana twice a year. I can't believe that Darlington lost a race for fontana, and just think we could still be watching races at Rockingham if NASCAR officials didn't do stupid things like give boring Fontana 2 races, watching one race there is hell enough.

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

I agree. In fact, I stopped by Darlington on the way home from the beach to pay my respects. They had about 5,000 for their weekend festivities and plan to expand it into a bigger event next season.

lynn, va

have u ever seen as crazy as when the caution light fell

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

It was pretty funny, to everybody but the competitors that could have run into it and NASCAR and track officials.

Dan (Detroit)

who clinches that 12th spot for the chase?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

I believe Bowyer will hold on, but David Ragan would make a great story.

Danny(NC)

Can DEI survive with one sponsor if Menard leaves and Army leaves seems bleak.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

I'm pretty sure they could come up with another sponsor or two, but it would make things tough.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

As much as Hamlin would love to win at his home track this weekend, how aggressive can he afford to be since he is 11th in point right now????????

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Denny is all about winning, so he'll be plenty aggressive.

Nick, Alabama

Any idea what happens to Micheal McDowell for 2009. I know that MWR announced that David Reuitmann will back in the 00 next year.

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

They'd like to keep him at MWR although he's been courted by a few other organizations.

Phil (LA)

When you take into consideration everything and all the series he's raced in - trucks, nationwide and Cup - where does Kyle Busch's season rank?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

It all depends on if he wins a Cup title. If he does, one of the best ever. If he doesn't, it'll be remembered about like Kevin Harvick's year when he had 14 wins between Cup and then Busch.

Daniel (Hammond, IN)

so, if California doesn't have the fans coming out to the race, shouldn't they get bring a race somewhere will the fans will show up?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

NASCAR is in California for the Los Angeles market, not simply to fill the stands. That being said, the NFL seems to do quite well without that market.

Marc (Malden, MA)

1st round, take who is left between LDT/ADP/Westbrook. 2nd round, take a WR if it's Moss/Owens/Wayne/Edwards. Otherwise, go RB.

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

I like Westbrook a lot. Thanks for the tip.

Brian (NY, NY)

What's going on with Brad Coleman?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Haven't heard much lately.

JD

Any news on a new sponsor for the 42 team and on who might be in the 41 seat next season?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

All quiet on both fronts. There's not a lot left out there to be honest outside of Scott Riggs, Johnny Sauter and Jeremy Mayfield.

Jon (Bay City, Mi)

Do you think Ragan will make the chase? if so who do you think will end up getting the short end of the stick? And I was also wondering if you thought Hamlin will have the same kind of car he had in the spring race and if not who will be your favorite this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

No, but I think he'll keep the heat on Bowyer, who I believe will hold on.

Keren (Maui)

Good point about the NFL in the LA market. Do you think the rest of the teams are catching up to the 18 due to more testing and finally figuring out the COT?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Not sure the rest of the field is catching up, but Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson sure are.

lyndsey,va

is it required that drivers wear booties

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

If you are referring to the shoes that protect them from fire, yes.

Tank

If youhas league whcih drafts individual defense pleyrs...you shuld draft Tank Johnson. He'll be round at number 3 and probably in the 2cund round aswell.

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

No individuals on defense in my league. I take my defenses last with the kickers. My track record has proven that works.

Tracy (Wyoming)

Will Red Bull re-sign Allmendinger? Any ideas on who could take over for Jay Frye in that organization if he goes to SHR?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

They've invested a lot in A.J., so I'd say yes. Perhaps run him a partial schedule at least with expansion to bring in Scott Speed. As for Frye, that loss will sting big.

Tim (DC)

RB Joseph Addai of the Colts would also be someone to consider...

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Had him last year, but really like Westbrook at No. 3.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Any news on Bill Davis racing???? Who will drive and who will sponsor them????

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Nothing on the sponsor, but Blaney has said publicly he'd like to be back.

Jose (NJ)

Carpentier has some tons of progress fromt he beginning of the series.....so do you think that some other team should pick him up or is he done in the sprint series?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

His future, at least with Gillett Evernham, all depends on sponsorship. If they get it he'll remain. If they don't then he's free to sign elsewhere. Not sure he'll be in high demand no matter how much progress he's made, and he has made some.

becky,va

should I bring a rain jacket friday/sat night

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

You should bring a rain jacket, umbrella, rubber boots and a raft.

Darcy (Charlotte)

Huge JJ fan here David. I've been arguing with my buddies about whether or not JJ will win his 3rd straight, now i know you already beleive he will and so do I, but my friends just think he has been too inconsistent this season. So with that said do you think cali was just a case of the 48 guys hitting the setup or is it just like last year where jimmie won cali and richmond and then went on to have a phenomenal chase.

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Yes, I believe that was a huge momentum boost for that team with all the 1.5 mile tracks in the Chase. It very well could propel him as it did last season.

Catfish

Is it just me, or does everybody kinda want to see them fit the NASCARs with windshield wipers and watch them race in the hurricane. If they can play football in it, lets see some racing!!! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaw!!!

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

I'm all for racing in the rain on road courses. Ovals such as Richmond not so much. Would be fun to watch all the spinouts, though.

Sven

Why do the IRL drivers wear what look like ski hats under their helmets (I assume they are fire retardent) but the NASCAR drivers do not? If its a safety issue, I'd think both sets of drivers would want to wear them???

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

You assume correctly. The IRL driver is more prone to exposure to heat and fire than a stock car driver.

becky,va

very funny

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

It happens from time to time.

derrick (birmingham)

welcome back america's team ALABAMA

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Dang Bama. I gave my fiance Bama and 7 points. Winner would bring drinks to the loser by the pool all day on Sunday. My legs are sore.

George, AZ

Newman sponsor? Any word.

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

There is a press conference on Friday where I assume Army will be announced. Haven't had time to check into it since I've been enjoying time here.

David (Kalamazoo, MI)

Any rumors from NASCAR on impending rules to allow for better manipulation of the new car? Heard rumblings about increased travel and splitter adjustability?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

They are looking at several things, but will make no final decisions until an entire season with the car is complete.

Tom (LA)

So, Letarte isn't the problem. You're saying the 24 team stays status quo next year if they continue to stink up NASCAR? Also, why is it Jeff can go race on dirt at Tony's event but can't drive a loose car at his "real" job?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

I wouldn't say they are stinking up NASCAR. Tony Stewart hasn't won a race, either.

FD (KY)

I've been reading things about the situation with Carpentier and Sorenson. I think GEM made a mistake signing Sorenson. His stats are terrible. Carpentier has done more with the #10 than anyone who has taken the wheel.

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

I can't argue with you on that.

Darcy (Charlotte)

ohh btw, wait to late for a qb and grab cutler, he is quietly becoming one of the best in the NFL and is on the verge of top qb status

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

So much pressure. I'm usually weeks into preparation. I've barely looked at the cheat sheets and the draft is at 7:30.

David Newton

Tank

Whos youre college team? I like Nort Carolina State...thouh i doestn think they'll go all the way this seeson.

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Have to give a plug for the mighty Terriers of Wofford College. And by the way, Stewart's press conference on Friday is to name Darian Grubb as his crew chief for next year.

Joshua (Carnesville, GA)

Has anything changed from last year to this year with the COT? Gordon dominated last year with the COT and now he is struggling. I just don't understand.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

It's such a delicate balance on that car, and when a team gets off just a litlte it struggles.

Marshall (Terre Haute, IN)

Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne...celebrity death match, who ya got?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

I'll go with Edwards. His biceps are bigger than Kahne's waste.

IRL SUCKs.COM

WILL ALL THE IRL DRIVER STOP RUINING NASCAR. I CAN'T EVEN UNDER STAND HAV OF NASCAR NOW

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Don't get so down on all the open wheel guys. Juan Pablo Montoya has been a breath of fresh air for the sport.

Catfish

Do you think Carpentier would be more marketable if he were to drop the "i" in his last name and go by "Carpenter"??? If you like the idea, you should pass it along next time you are in the garage.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

I guess you think Jimmie Johnson would drive better if his name were spelled Jimmy. C'mon Catfish.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

I guess you think Jimmie Johnson would drive better if his name were spelled Jimmy. C'mon Catfish.

derrick (birmingham)

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooooooollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll tide roll

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

No, I'm not waiting hand and foot on you as well.

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Well, guys, Looks like you are out of questions and I need to get back to fantasy preparation and catch up on the Republican Convention. Wonder if Sarah Palin will be available in the 12th round? See you next week.
