Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Sorry I'm late Freaks! Greeings. We have much to discuss as we have a big weekend of fights. I am psyched for Diaz-Katsidis and Juarez-Barrios. Make sure to check out the three blogs from this week, the updated fight sked and rankings and keep an eye out for a massive notebook this afternoon. Let's get to it.

Jose M La Habra CA

Dan - great to see Bute v Andrade was picked up by Showtime!

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I agree. Terrific move by Showtime. Bute is an underexposed fighter in the US and fighting in a decent division. And Andrade never stops coming forward and has an iron chin.

Nathan (Raleigh, NC)

It's been far too long since we have seen Barrios in action. I know you appreciate his fight with Freitas as much as I do. No disrespect to Juarez, but I think he bullies him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Freitas-Barrios is one of my favorite fights. Just sensational. But Barrios hasn't fought in 17 months and has had a serious eye injury. He will give it his all, but I like Juarez in a sort of tight fight.

Chris (Austin, TX)

Dan, Have you heard any news on what bouts may be placed on the DLH-Pacquiao card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

It's too early for that right now but one fight Golden Boy hopes to make is Penalosa-Mares. And on the Top Rank side, if JM Lopez wins his first defense on Oct. 4, he could come back on the PPV.

Patrick Pittsburgh, PA

Is Don King's card in China going to be available for us to see here?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

That has not been determined but if there is no TV I would imagine DK will put it up on his Web site.

Tony(Tampa)

Whats up Dan, Katsidis-Diaz. Who do you like to come out on top.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I favor Diaz in a great fight but I never count out a warrior like Katsidis, who has a big punch and a great heart.

Chris- Denville, Nj

Dan, any venue for Lacy-JT yet? Didn't you love Strahan popping out of the huge Super Bowl trophy last nite?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

DiBella told me yesterday that Taylor-Lacy would probably be at the arena on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. I watched the opening of the NBC telecast of the Giants game and seening Strahan on the field with the trophy and fans going crazy and the big Super Bowl banner literally brought a tear to my eye.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

I know Jorge Linares is on your wish list of fighters to get back in the ring. Any word on who and when?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

No date, but there is a good chance he will fight for the vacant 130 belt that his buddy Edwin Valero relinquished this week.

Mike (chicago)

What would Showtime air in November instead of Mijares-Darchinyan? I can't think of anything that would be better than that

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

It's up in the air. Depends on the budget. It is possible there won't be a live fight on Showtime in November or December. Cross your fingers and hope they get Mijares-Darchinyan done.

Justin (DC)

I heard HBO PPV isn't actually going to be producing the Casa/Marquez telecast, only distributing it. So does that mean there will be no replay the week after?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

You are correct. If you want to see it, buy it.

Joe (NYC)

Looking forward to seeing Kirkland tonight. Will he have to break a sweat against Cortes?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I hope so, but I kind of doubt it.

Chris (Greensboro, NC)

I was surprised to read that Frankie Gavin plans on staying an amateur for a while. How long do you think it lasts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

About as long as it takes for Frank Warren to ante up.

yorkis (philly)

If you know any causal fans, get them to watch Diaz-Katsidas and they may very well become Freaks by the end!

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Exactly.

Marc (Philly)

Good to see a USS Cunningham reference in the blog

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I didn't know they allowed you to read a blog in prison?

Jose M La Habra CA

Dan, plus or minus 6 rounds for Diaz Katsidis tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I'll take the over.

Justin

Dan I heard something about Arnaoutis' fight being live on the internet? What do you know about that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

It will be on the Web site gofightlive.tv and it will be available for free.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Was Katsidas ahead when Casa stopped him? Seemed like he was coming on in the middle rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Yes, Katsidis was ahead on all three cards at the time of the TKO.

Nathan (Raleigh, NC)

I say that Diaz's loss was more devastating than Kastsidis' but what do you think? I'm getting tired of hearing the excuses from the Diaz camp about the Don King distractions during the lead up to the Campbell fight. Anyway, Katsidis TKO 9.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I don't agree. Diaz did not get knocked out. And you can say whatever you want about the distractions but I was there in Cancun and it was horrible what was going on. Any fighter would have been distracted by all the BS that was happening. King was publicly destroying Diaz and his manager with signs and all sorts of stuff. It was ridiculous and a total mess. And then his trainer broke his leg. I take nothing away from Nate's victory. He fought great. But Juan was also not himself.

Josh (San Antonio, TX)

What do you make of Paul Williams' bout at middleweight, followed by a welterweight defense? Is he just waiting for Margarito?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I do not think Paul ever fights at welter again. I'll give you a little scoop from today's notebook. The plan to return to welter after the middleweight fight is not in stone. His camp is talking to Verno Phillips about Paul challenging Verno for his 154 belt in November on HBO and HBO will approve the fight. I think Paul will never again fight at welter.

corey from(westwick)

I like both these fights alot I'll take Diaz over Katisidis and Juarez to stop Barios late

Don (Buffalo)

Dan - is Rahman going to be David Hayes opponenet in November? I hear james Toney is being considered?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

James Toney is not going to be the opponent. Rahman might.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

I'm really confused about how Hatton will respond to Mayweather's training. Do you think he can "change" Hatton into a boxer-puncher inside of the brawler he is?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I spoke with Floyd Sr. late yesterday and he knows he can't change Ricky. But what he wants him to do is get him to get back to using his jab a lot more. When Ricky uses it, he has a good jab.

Armando (Nj)

Dan - great performance by "Iron Boy" last weekend - he is truly a special talent in the sport, a future HOF and a definite top 10 P4P - if he moves up in weight, i think he can still find much success - thoughts on that possibility?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I love Iron Boy and I will vote for him for the HOF. He's a great talent. If he goes to 112 he could have some problems. He is so tiny that I'm not sure how he'll handle some of those guys, but he's earned the right to try.

Zowild

Peace Dan La Hoya. Off the top of your head, who do you think are candidates for DLH's next trainer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

First off, I don't think it's set in stone that Big Floyd won't be back. But if he's out, I could see Oscar going maybe with Roger. Maybe Nacho Beristain, who is a great trainer and works with some other Golden Boy guys like JM Marquez and Abner Mares.

Joe: San Francisco, CA

Thank goodness Arum didn't poison the waters with Versus and they are staying in boxing. Any idea what kind of budget they have to work with for their cards in this post-Tye Fields world?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I do not know for sure, but based on the sorts of cards being put together I have to believe they are in a similar budget position as the Top Rank shows, which means perhaps in the $150,000 range.

Nathan (Raleigh, NC)

I read your blog earlier in the week about Joel Julio's bizarre decision making, but I'm still baffled...why?? I a world that makes no sense, this makes even less.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

It's like I wrote -- sometimes you see a decision that makes no sense and you wonder what must be up before you realize nothing is up, it's just a poor decision. This is that case.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

De La Hoya-Pacquiao 24/7 with Roger as De La Hoya's trainer would be AWESOME!

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I agree. And remember -- Oscar-Pacquiao is Dec. 6, which means we may have a chance to see Roger shopping for Thanksgiving again on 24/7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike, London

Any views on the Amir Khan fight on Saturday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Prescott is a big puncher (19-0 with 17 KOs), so I would guess he has a puncher's chance, especially with Khan showing some chin vulberability. But Frank Warren's people are smart and they must have done their homework on Prescott. So maybe he will be a test for a bit but I think the expectation is that Khan outboxes him. It's an interesting fight I think and I was sort of surprised they picked a guy like Prescott to fight him.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

There are so many great fights to be made from 122-130. Do you see JM Lopez moving up eventually. Would love to see him and Linares square off one day.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Lopez will move at eventually I am sure. But Linares just left 126 to go to 130. Maybe they will be in the same divison some day but it's going to be a few years.

Carlos (Funky Town, TX)

Dan, the marjority of the freaks are dissapointed with your BLOG on Margarito. How could you call him a hypocrite when he is a true warrior. He fought Williams when Cotto was the bigger money fight!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

You are missing the point I was making. My point was that if Margarito is going to diss Oscar and call him out and say he's ducking him, it's not unreasonable to take the position that he is doing the same thing to Williams. That was the point.

Sam (Houston)

I've gotten a hall pass from the wife to go to either the Pavlik/Hopkins or Roy/Calzaghe? Which fight would you suggest if only 1 of them is a option?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Calzaghe-Jones for sure.

Chris (Austin, TX)

Any word who Victor Ortiz may fight on the Casa-JMM undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Still TBA.

Roger Mayweather

What!?! Like ya'll don't eat Doritos for thanksgiving!

yorkis (philly)

is Guzman going to stink out Nate Campbell like he did to Soto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

It is entirely possible. If he wants to beat Nate, he'll have to do a lot of moving.

Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)

Danaconda, Happy Friday Sir!!! Love the blogs this week, but I must dissent on your "Margarito ducking Williams" point. The difference is Margarito ALREADY fought Williams, whereas De La Hoya has never fought Margarito. Also, it was Williams' fault the fight with Margarito didn't get made. Just an opinion......

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Yeah, he fought Margarito and LOST!!!!

Frank (PHX)

Dan, Nate Campbell or Guzman tomorrow night? The odds have Nate as the underdog in this fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

You need to check the calendar son.

Roger (Johnstown, PA)

I read that Ricky Hatton fired his long-time trainer, Billy Graham, and is working with Floyd Mayweather Sr. I thought Graham retired. Did he get fired or retire?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

He got fired.

Ray (camden, nj)

Dan, did you get a chance to see felix diaz win in the olympics? also what do you think about him and his chances turning pro?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I was not all that impressed by him. And I thought he got a gift in one of his fights.

Quinn (GA)

Since you don't travel abroad, do you get tapes of foreign fights? Is that how you evaluate Asian fighters for example?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I get tons of DVDs and tapes from Asia. I see basically everything of note from Asia.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I also have my computer rigged to watch live Japanese TV when I want.

Ron (Danbury Ct)

Hey Dan the Man! I'm psyched to see in your blog a matchup between Sakio Bika and Peter Manfredo Jr. Is that a definite and who do you give the upper hand to??

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

That fight is made and there are details in today's notebook with an undercard you will like too. I think Bika takes care of business in a painful way.

Mike NJ

How's ticket sales for Pavlik/Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

What am I? Ticketmaster?

Rick, Marina, Ca

That would be a very good fight betwwen Vic and Mijares, I think Mijares would outclass Vic, what do you think ?

Mike (San Diego, CA)

Dan, How do you see the fight between Berto and Stevie Forbes? I think Berto might actually knock him out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

You have to like Berto. He's bigger, faster and a better puncher. But I'm not sure he will stop Forbes, who has a great chin. I think he goes the distance.

Justin (DC)

Was his name Luke, who thought you should have a half hour TV segment before or after FNF? That is one heck of an idea. We need that as boxing fans, the sport could do well by it, and you have already proven yourself to do well on TV

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Thanks.

Zowild

Dan, your point on the Margarito blog does make sense. But here's my question to you. Do you feel he is ducking Williams? Also, he did lose, but even that was somewhat debatable

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

No I dont think he is ducking Williams and I don't think Oscar is ducking Margarito. Margarito is the guy with the title, not Oscar. Oscar can do what he wants. I find it amusing when a champion is the guy calling out a guy who is not a champion. Margarito did lose to Williams, albeit close. And someday I think they'll fight again at a higher weight. But Margarito makes himself look foolish when he calls out Oscar and accuses him of ducking when you can argue Margarito did the same to Williams. Simple as that. If Margarito would keep his mouth shut I would never have written what I wrote yesterday.

Bruce Seldon

I'm not really fighting tonight am I?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

No. You will go thru the motions and get either smashed up, or you will lay down like the dog that you are.

GR Orange, CA

What are the chances of Miguel Cotto fighting again this year? and who?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Cotto probably is not fighting again this year.

Carlos (Funky Town, TX)

Dan, I love the De La Hoya vs Pacquiao Fight but I think the issue is that Oscar said he wanted the winner of Cotto vs Margarito when he actually just wanted Cotto. People would respect Oscar more if he just said that Margarito is not the right fight at this point in his career. We know Margarito will fight Williams any day and De La Hoya will never fight Margarito.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Let's clear up another myth -- Oscar, to my knowledge, never said he'd fight the winner. He only wanted Cotto. Margarito was never really in the picture at all, even though the Arum/Margarito camp did ask. So forget about that. Oscar was never fighting Margarito if he beat Cotto, which he did.

yorkis (philly)

if Malik Scott fought Kevin Johnson in an 8 rounder, it would have to be a 76-76 draw on all 3 cards (assuming the judges could stay awake to score it), right??

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Well said.

Pribs (Bethlehem, PA)

Do you know if/when they will finalize the Contender cast?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Patience. I sense some breaking news coming.

Jokim (Georgia)

any updates on when Chris John will be fighting in the U.S?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

No. Now stop asking that every week.

Mike NJ

Buy or sell...Oscar fights next year

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Buy all day long.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

He's running for NY state senate.

Boris (NYC)

Hey Dan, it seems like you've never trained in a boxing gym. Don't you think even basic training will make your views and opinions on fighters that much more insightful? As in, why don't you try it out?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Like a football announcer or writer has to have played football or a baseball writer has had to have faced a 90 mph fastball. That's a load of crap.

mike (philly)

whatever happend to israel vasquez and rafael marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

They're chilling, taking well-deserved rests after three sick wars. They'll be back next year.

Winky Wright:

I just wanted to let ya'll know that i'm just waiting for the right time to comeback in a big way.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

If you read today's notebook, you'll get some news on your comeback.

BANISHMENT

Dan - - do you need me to step in - I could use some Jokim and cream - - -

Ryan (Fairport, NY)

DTM! After reading your blog about Devon Alexander, all I could so is shake my head. If he was handled as well as Andre Berto, he may be a world champion by now. With that being said, who are other prospects who could be rising quicker if they were handled properly?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I agree with you notion about Devon. It makes me sick to see the way this kid's career has been left to die.

Paul B (NY, NY)

I was excited to see that Molitor and Caballero are still on a collision course. How close are we to maiking it a done deal?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

The deal is done. All Caballer has to do is win and not get hurt.

Rick, Marina, Ca

Who do you got on the Championship scramble match ? I think Rey Mysterio pulls off the major upset.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

I'm going with Batista.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

NO WAY!?!?!?!?! Winky Wright fighting?!?!!?!?! Somebody call 911, I just had a heart attack!

Notebook

Where am I?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Somewhere working your way through the editing process I would assume.

Tim (Denver)

I;m really excited for the notebook today. Gonna be up shortly?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

You should because it is loaded with newsy items that will be reading for the first time.

Adam (DC)

Pretty sure Howard Cosell never trained in a boxing gym.

Mark (Vancouver)

Sounds like you're a bit pissed off at all the questioning of your Margarito Blog. The truth is, I agree with some of what you say, but you can't blame Margarito for wanting to fight DLH = $$$$$$$$$$$. Chicken hoya did say that he was going to fight the winner of Cotto-Margarito, plus its a payday. HE IS NOT DUCKING WILLIAMS!

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I don't blame Margs for wanting to fight Oscar. Everyone does because he brings the $$$$. But you remain an idiot because Oscar didn't say he would fight Margarito. So go cry somewhere else. I would also consider investing in a reading course so you can understand what you read instead of just saying what you want to believe you read.

Taylor (Salt Lake City, UT)

Dan, just your opinion, but I'm curious if you think there is a current/up coming fighter who could achive Oscar's PPV buying power?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I do not.

Sunny Boy Jaro

Ok Dan help me out. I am getting a title shot because?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

You have a cool name.

Stephen (St. Louis)

I kinda feel sad for DK that he's lost so much money on Alexander by not pushing him faster. As you sad, St. Louis is a city that got behind a boring boxer like Cory Spinks. Imagine what it would do for an exciting boxer like Alexander.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Agreed. It's been pathetic to watch Devon languish because DK just has no motivation to do anything with him. Here you have a kid with talent who is not a troublemaker, a personality and a hometown willing to support him and what does he do with him? Nothing.

BANSHMENT

Alright - - A Mark burger - please hold the mayo - wacky Canadians

David: (Odessa, TX):

Winky's best weight is at 147.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I'll probably write a blog about it, but I'll clue you in -- I spoke at length with Winky yesterday. He told me he has gotten up to 198 pounds, but he plans to fight at 160 in his next fight early next year.

Joe (NYC)

I'm as big of a DLH critic as they come, but I don't know how people like Mark in Vancouver and Carlos in Funky Town can accuse Oscar of ducking anybody.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Because they are haters who do not understand the business side of boxing at all.

Aaron (Dighton, MA)

Dan, we were having this discussion on another board. Who wins at 140 pounds: Roberto Duran or Aaron Pryor?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Great fight. I think I would have to take Duran.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

I think Kelly Pavlik has a decent shot at at least getting close to Oscar's PPV buying power.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

No chance whatsoever.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

No knock on Pavlik, by the way. But Osacr came into the pros with the world knowing him from the Olympics back when he was televised on NBC in prime time and had an emotional story that got people hooked. Pavlik is 30something fights into his career already.

Justin (DC)

Oscar's star power transcended the sport. Pavlik can be a huge star but within the confines of the boxing world.

ejstep

you realize you sound like a complete fool every time you use the word "hater", right? Give me a break. Are you that caught up in the DLH sweepstakes that you can't understand that some of us just don't like "the business side of boxing"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

You are entitled to your opinion but if you don't think business has anything to do with you, you're the fool. But you can live in your fantasy land. Fine by me.

hooligan

If you were a spelling bee judge, and the word was "one", and the contestant asked you to use it in a sentence, what would you say?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

There's only ONE Ricky Hatton.

Banishment

I'll take that hater with the weird name.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Dan-O! At the HBO events at MSG, do you ever have time to stop by the HBO-sponsored pre-parties? I will be at the RJJ-Calzaghe event and it would be great to grab a beer (or margarita in your case).

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I've been to a few, but I am usually pretty busy. I'll take a rain check.

Mrs. DTM, at work

Even I get that boxing is about making money. Dan, can I banish ejstep?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Have at it honey.

Brian (Anaheim, CA)

Any chance of Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire landing on the undercard of ODH/Pacquiao? Not sure if his fight with Mthalane was signed but this could be great exposure for Donaire.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Nonito's fight won't be on that card. It will be on Margarito's Nov. 1 undercard.

pribs (Bethlehem, PA)

Another strong showing by Mike Jones, and he seems to have no trouble making 147lbs. I'd like to see him against a guy like Soto-Karass after a few more fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

That would be a terrific fight. Both exciting young welterweights. Not sure they'd be willing to make that fight at this stage.

Keith (Holton, IN)

does anyone else keep refreshing the boxing home page every 30 sec hoping the notebook is up?

Joel Julio

*Abashedly* Hey Dad.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Go to your room.

Dan NY NY

Demetrius Hopkins had a pretty sweet debut with Top Rank, huh? What's the deal?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Not the best debut. Not only didn't make weight, blew it by about five pounds. Top Rank was not happy. He was sent home this morning. The kid needs to decide if he's going to be a serious fighter or just try to live off of his uncle's name. He's a huge disappointment.

gomez1012

Telefutura tonight, Urbano Antillon. Dude is legit, guessing we probably seem him make a splash at 135 soon.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I've liked Antillon for awhile now. He really struggled to make 130 and is destined for 135, which means another guy to watch for in a loaded division.

Josh(Newport Beach)

DTM! I'm going to be getting a tattoo on one arm, while reading the chat with my iPhone with the other hand, freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Depends what the tat is going to be of.

Dominic (San Francisco)

Dan! How did you rig your computer to watch Japanese TV?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I have no idea. My wife did it. She's smarter than I am.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Let me be the first to say: NOTEBOOK IS UP!

JD, Saratoga NY

ejstep just doesnt UNDERSTAND the Business side of the word, "hater". It happens.

Kevin (Stratford,CT)

Hey Dan, any update on Jaidon "The Don" Codrington ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Glad you asked -- if you read the notebook you will find out.

Teddy (Dallas, Texas)

Dan, just read that Goosen is close to having James Toney fight Audley Harrison in England. What is the point in this fight? A matchup with Haye down the road? Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

That fight is in the works, but not done yet. It is a chance for James to have a sorta notable fight that he could win.

dave (detroit)

winky could be a dangerous fight for abraham and could cost him a shot at pavlik

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Perhaps. I just hope that fight gets made since I still don't believe there will be a Pavlik-Abraham early next year.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Wait a minute. Don King tried to get a Golota vs. Briggs fight in China but is wasting Devon Alexanders career? It may be just me but the first one would've been the bigger waste of time.

Jeff, Las Vegas

Dan, Hard to believe all the heat you take for just telling it like it is. . .Some people act like who DLH fights is more important than global warming.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

LOL, I agree. At the end of the day all it is is a freakin' fight, a night of entertainment.

Charles (Philly)

All hail the hardest working man in freak business. Correct me if I am wrong, DTM, but didn't you post articles on Labor Day AND your own birthday?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

This is true.

Walter (Albuquerque, NM)

WHAT!!!!!!!! How in poo perfect hell did Wright land a fight with Abraham???!?!?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Settle down. It is not done. It is being discussed. The reason why, however, if it does happen is this -- Abraham will be in an optional period to fight who he wants. Abraham wants to fight in the US and needs a name opponent, which Winky is. It is also a fight that is interesting and one HBO is interested in. It's pretty easy. I know Winky has been off, but he is still a good fighter obviously. And even though he lost his last fight, it was at 170 pounds to the light heavyweight champion. No harm there and it was competitive.

Joe, LA

I would rather have seen DLH-Marg than DLH-Pacman, but I can get excited about the latter as long as people don't try to sell it as anything other than a big event that was driven by maximizing revenue and not determining anything relevant to any real title or championship.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

No one has said it was relevent to a championship.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Does anyone care at all about Duddy vs. Ronald Hearns?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I actually am very interested in that fight.

Notebook

Ahhhh....feels great to be out of the editing room!

Lennox Lewis

The notebook is Absolutely up!

Chris (Appleton, WI)

I have one question...with a loaded welterweight division, how is Michael Jennings a mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

It's like asking why was Gary Lockett a mandatory? Some questions must be pondered forever and there still won't be an answer that we can understand as mere humans.

Jeremiah (San Diego)

You should ask all these "haters" to go find a landscaping job that is harder than what they currently do and be satisfied with WAY LESS money than they could be making. . .Like DLH they wouldn't do it! It's pretty common sense

Harold Lederman

Dan I gotta tell you, great job by your wife banishing ejstep

Brian (Dillsburg, PA)

Dan, Is Max Kellerman doing the fight tomorrow night? He was singing the praises of Katsidis during the Casamayor fight. Then Katsidis got knocked out. I'm beyond pumped for tomorrow's fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Yes, Max does all the BAD shows.

Wil (Toronto)

You had written a while back the problems related to Molitor and a promoter who claimed to have his U.S. rights. Has that been sorted out and will we see the Molitor-Caballero fight on Shobox?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Yes, it is my understanding those issues have been resolved. And, yes, Molitor-Caballero would be on ShoBox.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Briggs: "I don't think it would be a smart thing to do a deal with Don without representation". He's a smart man.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

That is exactly what I told him when we were talking and he laughed.

Jeff, MD

I don't understand all the hate against DLH-Pacman....I honestly believe that Pacman has a really good chance to win that fight. Why the hate people?!?!?!

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

They're dopes.

Jason STL

After Kirkland dominates his opponent tonight can you see him challenging the MORA/FORREST winner

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Sure but I am not sure either guy would accept it. Kirkland is going to be the sort of guy that if he's going to fight for a title probably will have be a mandatory and force someone to give him a shot because he's so dangerous, not well known and does not bring a ton of coin to the table.

Harold Lederman (somewhere where the camera can't see me)

The Banishment/Freak fight is scheduled for 12 rounds using the unified rules of Dan's chat room. There is NO talk of F**** M********* J* Only Dan can ban. In the case of an accidental stupid comment, you will be thrashed by all. And you cannot be saved by Dan at any time, INCLUDING Fridays at noon! Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Absolutely brilliant.

Brooks (Cleveland)

Hey Dan - nice notebook. . .I for one would love to see a Wright-Abraham fight. It would be interesting and competitive I think and the winner would be set up perfectly for a super-fight with Pavlik.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Appreciate the blogs and pending fights updates. Any chance of a RAD this Saturday?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

YES! I am planning an RAD chat tomorrow after Diaz-Katsidis, so I hope you can all join the chat after what should be an epic fight.

Wilson (DC)

As a diehard Margarito fan, I have little interest in watching de la Hoya getting stressed out and beaten half to death by Antonio. Clottey or Williams are better fights for Margarito, and Pacquiao is a better fight for Oscar - period

Rick, Marina, Ca

Holy smokes, I didn't know Kirkland is fighting tonight, excellent. I geuss I need to read the schedule more often.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Yeah, you do dude.

Kevin (Denver)

Dan: David Haye was quoted recently as saying he had a "done deal" with an unnamed heavyweight, and that person backed out of the deal. Any idea as to who he is referring to, and if so, care to share?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I have no idea. When he gets a deal done, I will let you know.

Joel Julio

Daddy please don't me mad at me for my managements decisions. I love you.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Go to your room. You are grounded.

Frank (PHX)

Dan, Buy or Sell: Tomorrow's Diaz/Katsidis fight will be Fight Of the Year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Sell. It could be great but not sure it will surpass Vazquez-Marquez. It also has to be better than Cotto-Margarito and Casamayor-Katsidis.

Rick (Perinton, NY)

Dan-O! There is a ______ % of an RAD tomorrow night.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

100% (unless I drop dead or the power goes out or some other act of God).

Rick, Marina, Ca

Is Chavez Jr still planned on the undercard of Margarito ? I can't remember but the Dodger Stadium idea is dead right ? If so is there new location?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Chavez won't be on that card at this point. For whatever reason, he'll probably fight a fall bout in Mexico. Dodger Stadium is dead. Then they talked about going to the Honda Center in Anaheim and the building was on hold. But now I am told that it is likely going to wind up at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, which is great news because Mandalay rules.

Mike (San Diego, CA)

Dan, in your blog today you mentioned Gamboa vs. JuanMa as something you think about on a daily basis. What would your dream step-up fight be for James Kirkland?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I'd love to see Kirkland fight Angulo.

Michael (Roxbury, NJ)

Dan is it possible the best explanation is that the Love child's people just thought he would probly lose to Martinez for some reason?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

That could be. But as I stated in my blog, both fights are tough but it was my opinion that since both wer risks and I feel that Martinez might be a hair easier for more money and way more exposure, it would have been a better decision to fight him instead of going to Germany for less than half the money with no US TV, etc....

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Can you talk to the powers that be and see if we can get a Tavoris Cloud vs. Chris Henry fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Terrific matchup.

Willie Pep - Bradenton, FL.

Dan ze Man - why is Casa/JMM on PPV? Tickets haven't exactly flown off, either.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

It is PPV for one simple reason: There were no TV dates or interest from the networks and Golden Boy has an obligation to its fighters to give them work. So if you want to see it, you gotta pay for it.

Brian (Brooklyn)

Hey Dan, just wondering, when boxers are hospitalized after a fight are they covered by a sanctioning body or are they paying the expenses out of their purse/bank acccount?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Every promoter must have insurance for each card, so expenses are covered by that but only for so long and so much. After that, a fighter is on his own with his own insurance.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

Showtime PPV for Margarito/Clottey, correct?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Maybe, but no deal yet.

Colin (College Park, MD)

Re-reading Winky's quote, he does say "As long as I'm getting paid". So does this mean his usual (insane) money demands, or will he be reasonable?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Only he really knows.

Chief M......EYA Clw Florida

Dear Mr. D, Will there be a chat tomorrow night like you did last month on a Saturday night after the fights were done?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Yes.

mrmarksmith

Greetings Master of All Things Boxing! Now that DeLaHoya/Pacquiao is signed and awaiting its' due date what are your predictions for the mega-fights in 2009?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Maybe Oscar-Hatton. We could also see the return of F**** M********* J*. Maybe a Margarito-Cotto rematch, which I think is a strong possibility. I think there's a very real chance of a Klitschko-Haye fight, which would be a pretty big deal. Maybe a Vazauez-Marquez 4. There are several good fights on the horizon.

Shane Miami Florida

When the official announcement for Calzaghe/Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Sept. 16 in NYC.

Mike (San Diego, CA)

Dan, What do you think was the reasoning behind Paul Williams' choice of opponent. Couldn't he have found someone better than a guy whose career highlight is losing to Andre Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Nobody really wants to fight Williams and there isn't a ton of money for the Versus fight. For a guy who never fought at middleweight in his life, Kolle is a reasonable opponent in my opinion.

Mark (LV,NV)

When is Joey Gilbert and Jesse Brinkley fighting ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

When do they come pick you up for your ride to the mental hospital?

Justin (DC)

Why are you uncertain of a Pavlik/Abraham match up? Would you lean towards a Pavlik Calzaghe match up first, if they both win of course?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

I just believe that the Pavlik camp will not look for that fight in the near future because they believe it is not a big enough money fight yet relative to the danger is poses. And if Pavlik can fight Calzaghe, that would be a much bigger fight and more mainstream fight.

Rags

I see Demetrius Hopkins hired Jose Luis Castillo as his conditioning coach....

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Good quotes from Mayorga and Shane. I don't think Mayorga can KO Shane, but do you think Shane has enough pop at 154 to take out Mayorga?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Yes.

Ron (Danbury CT)

Dano, just read your notebook (great job as always) and I have to give props to VS for putting on some really good boxing matches in the upcoming months...hopefully this will be a continued trend. I have to think that your articles and comments help to televise some of these fights...example Bute and Andrade. It was all you DANO!! Your the peoples Champ!!!! keep up the good work

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

LOL. Thanks. I think the Versus schedule looks pretty darn good right about now. I hope they keep it up.

rob (at work)

Since they have numbers on how the NCAA Tourney effect productivity at the workplace - - they should have some numbers on Rafa's chat on Friday from 12 to 2-3ish - because personally I do next to nothing.......

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

That's how we at ESPN like it.

Mike (San Diego, CA)

Dan, I need help making a decision. I could either head to South Bend to watch my alma mater (Stanford) take on Notre Dame, or drive an hour to Pechanga and check out Gamboa and Angulo in person for the first time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

If you have to ask that question you deserve... BANISHMENT!!!!!!!!!!

New York

Dan, I took a look at your top five welterweights and I thought to myself, "Mayweather went out of his way to dodge all of them". How can he be taken as a seriously great boxer/champion?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

That may be the case, but you can't take away the accomplishments M******** had at 130 and 135 and the fact that he fought some big fights.

Rick (El Paso, TX)

Dan, I'm gonna be in Vegas for a wedding the weekend of 10/11. I'm probably going to start feeling sick at about 7p on Saturday. Any idea when the Tarver/Dawson tickets will go on sale? They aren't up on ticketmaster yet.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

They should be on sale any day now. I saw something about it a recent release. Keep checking. It's not a big room where that fight is being held. I will be out there for that fight.

gomez1012

What happens with Humberto Soto now that Pac is fighting DLH?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I think he'll get an opportunity to fight for the vacant title, which he deserves.

Matt G. (Chicago, IL)

The Ring came out and said this month that M********* could be considered the greatest 130 lbs'er ever.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

It's possible, but there are others who were great at that weight also like Chavez and Arguello and Nelson.

Habs (Phoenix, AZ)

BAT Dan: My feather weight prospect dream fign would be lopez-Gamoba(Lopez moving up)! Totally unrealistic now, but when it happens who wins???

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Let's see them develop a little more first. At the moment, Lopez is too polished for Gamboa.

BANISHMENT

Mike with a side of the Stanford tree please

Aaron (Hartford)

Did Alfonso Gomez disappear ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

No, just no fights for him at the moment. I know his promoter would love to make a fight for Gomez against JC Chavez Jr., but Top Rank isn't interested (even though at one time they talked about it).

Jason (DE)

You are suddenly blessed with the ability to retroactively change 5 bad judging decisions from the past. Which 5 do you choose?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Off the top of my head -- Lewis-Holy 1, Whitaker-Chavez, Steve Forbes-DHop, Casamayor-Santa Cruz.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, why isn't HBO interested in the Mijares/Vic D fight? Wouldn't that make a great BAD main event or co-feature for another big fight this year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Of course it would, but for whatever reason HBO isn't interested in those kinds of fights. What they need to do is go back to the early days of BAD and look at the sort of fights it put on, plenty in smaller weight classes. Mijares-Carchinyan is a great matchup. HBO's loss. Let them keep overpaying for Pavlik-Lockett and Berto-Rodriguez if that is what they want to do.

Chris (AZ)

Any chance the Shobox scheduled for Oct 3 going to feature the Antwun Echols fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

LOL. You're insane. Seek medication. Are you clueless? ShoBox is about prospects or at least up and coming fighters. Echols is a dead man.

Antwun Echols

Dude- even i dont want to see myself fight

Andre Berto

How do I have a World Title? Shouldn't I then be forced to fight the elite of my division?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Eventually, yes. Good job working a terrible system. Beat Forbes and then we want serious fights.

rob (jersey)

I know DTM is a lover not a fighter - HOWEVER if you could fight one person on PPV who would it be, and what would your ring entrance music be...LOL!

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

60-40 and I'll kick your ass. Obviously, the entrance musinc would have to be KISS' War Machine.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Wow, of all the insane comments ever posted, the Echols one has to be top 10. Why...

yorkis (philly)

Courtney Burton-Emmanuel Augustus would be a nice one to flip - i thought Teddy Atlas' head was gonna explode!

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Agreed. Some others also suggested Roy Jones' Olympic loss, which is obviously one that I would like to change.

Mark (LV,NV)

I dont know why you hate on joey Gilbert. He was a top 10 rated middleweight who got the shaft by the NAC. This kid could have been a star after coming off the TV exposure from the contender. I just dont get you sometimes !!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

First of all, he was a steroid user. Second, he is not that good. Third, his ranking was an utter joke and fraud. And fourth, are you his lover?

Kevin (work)

Any update on the Golden Boy Latin America cards being televised in the US ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Nope.

Rick, Marina, Ca

I would really like to see Berto fight Judah if gets past Forbes. Thats a really good tester and it's actually good for Judah to.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I agree. I'd like to see Berto face someone like Judah or Collazo or even a Cintron or Quintana.

yorkis (philly)

the RJJ olympic loss ruined amateur boxing forever, so that's probably the winner!

Rick, Marina, Ca

Classic, Dan. Are you his lover. LOL

Aaron (Hartford)

I love the 2nd and 3rd hour of this chat...its like closing time at the bar... all the freaks get desperate and ask the craziest questions !!

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

LOL!

Kevin (NYC)

Hey Dan RafaNadal (hey, I tried) - whats next for Glen Johnson? Haven't heard anything yet, he deserves another shot!

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I agree, he deserves another notable fight. His people have talked about a fight with Shaun George in the fall, but like everyone else -- they need a TV date to make it happen.

Rags

Whatever happened to the proposed Tua-Arreola bout?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Tua keeps turning it down.

Matt (Brooklyn)

War Machine? Not "God of Thunder?"

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Correct.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

It would have to be this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i81m9FvM3G0

Jeff (New York)

Hey, I was wondering if you knew how well tickets have sold for Katsidis-Diaz? Will the placed be packed or empty??? And are you surprised by this?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

By all accounts, they have sold very, very well and they expect a crowd of about 15,000.

Jeff (New York)

Dan! Im a huge fan and I go to every fight in MSG, but this Calzagh-Jones fight is outside my price range. Any idea when the cheaper 150$ seats will go on sale, if at all???

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Not sure. I am disappointed to see such crazy high prices for that fight, although at least they are not the moronic $15,000 they tried to charge for Jones-Trinidad.

Matt (portland, OR)

OMG I just read the 60-40 and I kick yo ass." CLASSIC RJJ right there. I watched that and poor Hopkins didn't have a clue what to say.

Mark

How does a Kirkland - Margarito fight sound? Who do you take?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Sounds good but right now, Margarito would destroy him.

Kevin

A little talked about, but still somewhat important heavyweight bout is Juan Carlos Gomez vs Vladimir Virchis. What's your take?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Doesn't do much for me but the winner will be in line for a shot at the Peter-Vitali winner. JC Gomez is a big stinker. Virchis is decent. Just another fight.

rob (jersey)

Better Watch out - I'm a War machine - - rockin rio - great link...

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, any chance Glen Johnson gets another title shot in his career or is he not worth the risk to the other champs at 175?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Well one of the sanctioning organizations has him ranked No. 2, so he's right there on the brink of being mandatory.

Habs (Phoenix, AZ)

The Freak 10 Commandments 1. There is one King, his name is Dan. 2. Freaks only eat Quizons Subs. 3. Only Kiss plays in Boxing Freak Heaven. 4. I will read the Notebook before Chating. 5. Nicole Schweiznger Sings all Freak National Anthems. 6. Freaks only ask informed questions? 7. Banishment is the devine right of King Dan only. 8. Freaks ever mention F**** M******* by name. 9. Freaks will never miss a chat, ules faced with death or imprisonment. 10. There is one King, his name is Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

You are too kind but that is hilarious to me.

yorkis (philly)

Will we ever see Klitchko-Valuev? that's what i call "cashing out"! Valuev sux.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

It's a fight that I think probably will happen eventually if they keep winning. I know both sides have mentioned it as being something they are interested in.

Matt (Brooklyn)

Great KISS clip...easily the best live arena rock show you'll ever see.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Agreed.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, read before Duran over Pryor 140. Does Mosley beat either one at 140?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Interesting to think about because Mosley never fought at 140, but I think Mosley was extraordinary as a lightweight and I think at 140 he could have been a problem for both guys. He had the handspeed and chin to hang with both of them.

Lennox (England)

I should ABSOLUTELY be in the Freak Commandments. Definitely.

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Here's another version for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdJemDKdPUA&feature=related

Habs (Phoenix, AZ)

King Freak: WOW!!! Just listened to the Kiss link...Best version ever... I got so excited I accidently punched myself in the face, but Im still chating!

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

LOL.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, I know he skipped over 140 but I think that would have a great weight class for him to dominate.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I agree -- he would have dominated at 140. But there was a mega fight with Oscar out there and he went right to 147.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Check out the notebook, blogs, rankings and sked and enjoy the fights this weekend. Remember, tonight is the final FNF of the year and Kirkland is on, so check it out. And report back here after tomorrow's Diaz-Katsidis show. Peace.
