Hi there folks. Heck of a race at Richmond Sunday. Let's hope some of the Chase races are that good.
im a huge fan of your entrys and i had a question..wher do u think scott riggs will end up for the 09 season..hes gotten the bad end of a few deals with management cchanges over the past few years...jus wanted you insight...thanks!
Hi Justin. Thanks for the kind words. Scott is in a tough situation because there aren't a lot of options left out there. Ganassi might consider him, or possibly the Wood Brothers.
Everyone is talking about the 3 guys they think will win the championship but who do you think is 1 or 2 guys we better keep our eyes on. Remember Kurt Busch came from no where and won the thing in 04
Harvick has raced much better over the last month. And Junior could surprise some people if the team makes the right calls on strategy.
is it just me or is sorenson doing better now that he is leaving for 2009
It's alays easier when the pressure is off and you know bigger and better things are ahead.
Any new developments with Red Bull? Jay Frye's status? Do you think he will stay or go?
I think it will be tough for Jay to turn down's Stewart's offer because Jay has old ties with Hendrick Motorsports, and Stewart's team with work with Hendrick.
With no Dodges making the Chase, is there anything Dodge Motorsports -- or NASCAR -- will change for next year to improve their competitiveness?
NASCAR won't make specific changes to help Dodge, but they may make small changes to the car that could helped everyone be more compettive.
Terry, How many chase points are awarded in each race and are they the same at each chase track? Thanks
The points given are exactly the same as the regular season, which is the same for every race. But there is no 10-pt. bonus for winning, which was used to seed the drivers in the Chase.
is it true true that reed has to qualify into the 500 if yes, why
Yes, if the No. 10 car doesn't move up into the top 35 before the end of the season
Mr. Blount, Do those drivers that make the chase generally become less aggressive to insure the finish each race once the 10 race chase begins?
Absolutely. The Chase is about staying out of trouble. However, Johnson was pretty aggressive at the end of last season when he won four consecutive races.
Kyle Petty was on the radio saying how Hendrick is essentially a 6 car team next year (with StewartHaas) and Roush is a 7 car team (with Yates). Does nascar view it that way?
No or they wouldn't let them do it. It's a gray area, but satellite teams don't have all the advantages and don't do as well as the team they work under.
By you only listing Ganassi and the Wood Brothers as possible landing spots for Scott Riggs, does that mean he's not a candidate for the 2nd Petty car? If not Riggs, is McCumbee a done deal for that ride?
I belive it's Chad's deal, but we'll see.
Will non-chase drivers tend to let Chase drivers by, even if they have a chance at a top 5 finish?
No way. But teammates of Chase drivers might let a guy lead a lap to get five bonus points.
Ed Hinton wrote I story comparing Jr. to his father (great piece by the way). what is your take on the contact between Jr. and Kyle last week? Was it revenge?
It's hard to say, but veteran drivers know how to wreck someone without it looking like they tried to wreck them. And Junior's bump was almost identical to the way Kyle hit him.
Are Riggs and Carpentier the top "free agents" still available?
Don't think I would call either of them top free agent, but I guess they are the best drivers available for hire.
are there any plans to bring NASCAR to the n.y.c area any time soon.
Not unless ISC finds a way to build a track there. They tried and failed.
Is Tony Eury Jr and dale Jr every going to figure out how to finish a race strong
They have 13 top 10s and eight top 5s. I'd say that's pretty strong.
Where is all this $$$ coming from at Stewart-Haas... for years Haas didn't spend 2 pennies now all of a sudden they are overpaying to get Frye?
It isn't about Haas' money. It's the sponsor money. Stewart already has Office Depot and Old Spice, and more is coming.
What is up with Newman? Sponser? Crew Chief?
Be patient. Answers are coming in a couple of weeks. Some things hinge on what Jay Frye decides to do, which could mean he brings some folks with him and frees up other spots at Haas..
I thought I read that NASCAR drivers considered cars with green paint to be bad luck. But, seems like a lot of them are using green in their paint schemes now.
That's an old racing superstition that doesn't apply any longer if the sponsor has green colors.
why do they only allow x amount of tires in the nationwide and truck series?
To try to control costs.
what has been the funniest moment so far this season
Jack Roush calling Toyota exec. Lee White an ankle-biting Chihuahua
This somewhat relates to what Frye does, but will Red Bull keep Dinger and go to 3 cars? Or will Speed get the 84?
They are still debating that topic., but Jay lobbied for them to keep AJ and run Scott on a partial Cup sked next year.
Do you think anyone has a chance at the title besides Johnson, Edwards and Busch?
If I had to pick one driver who could surprise those three it would be Junior. Tony also has the ability to do it, but the lame-duck status hurts him. But this is a whole new ballgame. Any of the 12 could get hot and make a run at it.
Do you see any of the guys outside the chase winning a race the rest of the way?
Kahne could win and so could Kurt Busch. I think Vickers is close to reaching Victory Lane. And dont count out Mark Martin or Martin Truex.
ok I understand that the sponsors bring the money but they are obviously throwing a lot of cash around (Stewarts deal, Newman, the guy from Hendrick, now Frye).. how can they be profitable?
If sponsors are paying you more than $20 million a year, you can make a profit.
So, you know the drivers, do you think Junior is starting to feel a little more Intimidator in his blood, as he gets a little older?
Only if Kyle is in the way.
Any update on the testing for next year and do you think it will further separate the have and have nots?
I do. The rich teams will test all they want. The others won't be able to do that.
Your top 5 after homestead is.....
My crystal ball says Edwards, Johnson, Busch, Earnhardt, Harvick.
Hi Terry, I won't be around for the chat but I wanted to get this statement in. So how about that COT adding "parity" to the sport. The 4 best teams each get 3 drives in the chase. 18 races were won by 3 drivers. No Dodge in the chase. Not good for the sport. Hopefully this will improve over time.
I wrote about this today for the Blount Blitz. Four teams made the Chase, the fewest since the playoff started.
Terry, I know there are so many other more pressing matters, but I just gotta know: how impressive is it to run 650 miles Sunday in both Sprint Cup and Nationwide and be able to stand upright afterward, let alone do a backflip?!
Carl is in remarkable physical condition, but Richmond isn't the hardest track as far as strain on the drivers. And it was 650 laps, not miles
Will the top-35 rule be a non sequitur by the end of the year (i.e. because there will be 43 teams or less)?
Very good point. It might not matter much at most events next year, but we'll still see 50 cars at Daytona for the 500.
What's the deal with Sam hornish? can he make it at his level? I'm a huge fan, but have been disapponted. The lowlight seeing the tire come off during saturday's race. I'm beginning to question the people around him..
That's the point. Jimmie Johnson won't win if the tire comes off. It's hard to judge Sam because his team just isn't very good.
Terry, I'm asking for your best guess. Who does Jamie McMurray drive for in 2010?
Why are teams staying with Dodge? Obviously they are at a big disadvantage. They won 4 times, but not one car in the chase. They are pulling out of the Truck series, I think it's only a matter of time before Penske and/or GEM leave for Toyota or GM.
Here's the point. Manufacturers don't win races. People do. The best engineers, fabricators, engine builders, drivers, crews, etc. Gibbs proved that this year in moving to Toyota.
Seems to me that 10 week stretches tend to see guys rise and fall...its a long time. You think the 24 could get it together and make a run, or are they just too much outta sink?
You never shoud count out Gordon competely, but the truth is they are way off from title contention. It would take a dramatic shift.
Now that we have started the chase. Biggest suprise of the season and who would you have liked to be part of the chase that did not make it.
Definely Ragan and Vickers. Ragan had a remarkable second year and Vickers is well on his way to contending again. I also would have liked to see JPM make the Chase, but he doesn't have the team to do it.
Hey Terry, I've got an issue, I own the actual truck that the brickyard done for Tony and took him around the track in before the race. Should I leave the 20 on the doors or have 14s made and replace them? Too tough for me to call.
Tough call. He won two titles with that number, but it's Joey's number now.
Hey Terry, Will BAM racing return this season or wait until Daytona to make a return???? If then?????
Mark, you may be the only person in America who cares.
I was in the pits on Sunday and t was pretty easy to tell the open wheelers from the NASCAR guys...the open wheelers were dressed to the nines and the NASCAR guys were casual...dressed to hit a BBQ. Very different cultures...do they all get along (I know nobody likes JPM)...Hard to imagine Hornish and Stewart having much in common???
You forget that Stewart raced in open wheel before going to NASCAR. He won an IRL title. Racers are racers regardless of the type of car they drive. It's the fans who are different.
When can we expect to see new Stewart merchendise? When JR changed to hendricks the stuff came out quick.
I'm sure it's coming soon, but they probably want until they have everything in place and announced.
Which "second tier" teams have the best chance to join the elite in 2009? Yates? GEM? Red Bull? Possibly Stewart-Haas or Petty?
I'd say GEM and Team Red Bull, but it will hurt TRB is Frye leaves.
What sort of impact do you expect from Logano (end of this year and next)?
Joey just wants to get his feet wet this year an have a couple of top-10 showings. I think he could contend for the Chase next year, but it's a lot to ask for someone that young.
Who's a guy that could get out of the gate fast (Loudon, Dover) and surprise the Chase field?
Terry, How do you think Logano will do in his Cup debut this week?????
New Hampshire is sort of his home track, but it's very difficult to drive and a tough place to pass. If he finishesd in the top 20, JGR should be happy. if he finshes in the top 10, they should name him emperor.
I know Tony won't get out of the 20 early, but if he drops out of contention, can you see Zippy moving over to the 02 or 96 (whichever car Logano is in) to call his race?
Not likely unless Tony falls way behind.
Of the 12 chasers, who is the number one driver that can manage the pressure, and who is the one you may suspect that will not.
Jimmie is the best Chase performer ever. Kenseth also does well in those conditions.Kyle has the most pressure on him and the most to lose.
How much does the loss of Darian Grubb hurt the 88 team next year? Personally, I think it could cost him a title in 2009.
Hendrick has tons of depth. They have thee of four guys most people haven't heard of that coud step in and crew chief successfully right now.
With corporate sponsorship going away, will Dodge be leaving the truck series soon??????
Dodge is providing any financial support in the series next year.
Who does better next year, Logano or Mears?
Did Junior's move last weekend show that he is stepping up or into more of a leadership role for his team and at HMS? He seemed more confident than he has been in a while.
Junior always runs well at Richmond, so I wouldn't read too much into it yet.
What will happen to the Wood Brothers?
They need to merge with another team.
Thanks again Terry for answering these questions. As a Ford Racing fan I was wondering about sponsorship for Yates Racing next year, anything new? Also, I assume an announcement about Ragan and UPS soon?
Nothing new on Yates. Ragan was very coy about the UPS thing at Richmond, but it's clear he wants it to happen.
Do teams feel pressure from their sponsors for not making the chase?
Some do. If the sponsor expected you to make it (Budweiser, maybe?) they probably aren't too happy.
Gotta get going folks. Have a great week I'm out. Peace.
