Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

Hello AFC Southies...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

A small news update. Vince Young is scheduled to talk to reporters in about 15 minutes. I will not be there, but we may get word of what he's said before we're finished here...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

As I mentioned in my "Reading the coverage" blog entry this morning, I'd like to talk AFC South most. I'll chime in on a few fantasy questions if I must, but be advised: I lost my opener 103-52 and drafted Tom Brady sixth.

Richard(Knoxville)

Your buddies at the Tennessean think Vince is out for a long time, when do you think he starts again if he is healthy in 2 weeks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

About a month or five weeks. Will depend on how the team is doing....

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

How will teams defend the Titans without Vince Young and how do you think it will impact the running game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

Well they won't do any spying and they'll know where the target will be on rushes and blitzes. Things may be a bit tighter for the run game, but Kerry might do more downfield to keep an eighth man out of the box too...

Os (Jersey)

PK, tell me the Texans just ran into an incredible PITT Def?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

We'll find out Sunday...

Juan (Monterrey, Mexico)

What kind of success do you expect Matt Cassel to have this year? I see a young quarterback with inexperience, but years learning the Patriot's system, a pretty looking deep ball (as evidenced by his first pass to Moss, which brought a tear to my eye) much more mobility than people realize, and a wide reciever group a young quarterback could only dream of playing with. I could see 25-30 touchdowns from this young man. What do you see him putting up numbers wise, and more importantly, how many wins?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

If I am a Pats fan and he throws 15-17 TDs and under 10 picks, I'm thrilled. I think you're a little overexcited for him. Brady was 18 and 12 when he took over for Bledsoe....

Pietan, Washington DC

Today you mentioned that the relationship between Fisher and Del Rio was "frosty". Other than plain divisional rivalry is there something particular that drives the bad blood between them? What are the relations like between all four of the head coaches in the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I wrote a post about the frost relationship last Wednesday. You can find it if you scroll back on the AFC South blog. I think it's the one frosty relationship in the division. Everyone gets a long with Dungy and Kubiak is very likeable too...

Os (Jersey)

Any updates on Haynesworth for this week? How much would the Titans suffer without him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

They should beat the Bengals without him if they have to. But I know Tony Brown won't look so great if AH isn't there...

Pietan, Washington DC

Jacksonville?s offensive line has been decimated with injuries. How difficult will it be for the Jags to repair the damage? In other words is this a season ending blow or are guards a bit more interchangeable than say QBs and running backs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Virtually impossible. Time to readjust those hopes, I fear. Guard are more interchangable, but you aren't finding good ones in September...

Steve (Syracuse, NY)

Superbowl for Tennessee without VY and with that D? I mean Collins seems like he can manage a game MUCH more efficiently than VY

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

How about a playoff win for this version of the team before we send it to Tampa?

Gary (Denver)

Paul, Looking at the 2006 draft, who would you take now if it was to be done over again?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

You want me to say Cutler. And I like him a lot and he'd be the choice of the QBs now. But things can change quickly. I still think Leinart will be a player. Not sure about VY. Tough to argue against Mario either...

Jeff Saturday

I've been practicing and am expected to play. Smart move or not? It was pretty obvious that my teammates missed me last week.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

I just hope it's not too soon and putting you at futher risk. Very cool of you to drop by. How about a phone interview after this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

For fantasy purposes, I would play the guys you drafted high to start. I don't think it's good to juggle unless you are weighing a 10th rounder against a 12th...

Thomas (Charlotte NC)

With or without VY, this Titans team is a 10 win team. Do you think the titans can push for the division title if both the Jags and Colts start off 0-2 which isn't that unrealistic.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Yes. If the Titans are 2-0 and Colts and Jags are 0-2, the Titans will have a realistic shot at winning the division. Too bad for them they didn't draw a Sept. game against Indy. When has anyone ever said that before?

Kim (Columbus, OH)

Can Bengals fans take anything positive out of last week's game? I thought corners Leon Hall and especially Jonathan Joseph looked pretty good. Thanks!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I didn't see more than the highlights. But based on what I saw and heard, it seems like you've about covered it, Kim!

Matt Portland, ME

i need to decide between four backs...which two should i start (Maroney, Chris Perry, LenDale White, or Pierre Thomas)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Not Perry. I'd go Maroney for sure. Probably White second...

Anthony (Santa Monica, CA)

Hey Paul, If this years version of the Titans D goes far into the playoffs, is it fair to compare them to the great d's ike the Ravens our Bucs from the early 2000's?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

One game is far too soon for us to make such comparisons...

JB (Smyrna, TN)

PK - Love listening to you on 104.5 the Zone!!! I heard the Titans had some interest in a few WRs (Joe Horn included). Any news on that?!?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

This gets skewed. They looked at a bunch. Looknig at a bunch and "having interest" aren't the same thing. If they were interested, they'd be offering a contract, and there is no indication they've done that...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Thanks for the compliment on the radio stuff by the way, please keep listening...

Matt Detroit MI

I need to start 2 of the 3 LT Gore or Bush

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

How would you even ask about LT?

Eric, Chicago IL

Hi Paul, The guys in my fantasy league are upset because I've made 9 moves already. Am I in the wrong here?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

If there is no limit, you can do what you want...

Jesse (Boise, ID)

So based on your comment about the Jags starting 0-2, do you expect them to lose to the Bills on Sunday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I don't think it's a lock, but yes, I am leaning that way...

Peter (Charlotte)

Wow, I hope you really don't think the Colts can lose to the Vikes. The Bears D is a whole lot better than the Vikes. Colts win big!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

Peterson will be a big challenge, as will the two Williamses in the middle of that D. No cakewalk at all...

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

How are the Bengals favored over Tenn? What am I missing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Titans don't get a lot of points as they win close and play close so often. So that's homefield, I presume...

Matt

On a scale of 1-10, how stupid is Ed Johnson for getting caught with pot after all his troubles at Penn State?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

11

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

What's your take on Derek Anderson...I see him as a one-year wonder, like Kelly Holcomb or Tommy Maddox. Any chance of a Brady Quinn sighting soon?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

I need to see Anderson do it again...

Gary (Jacksonville)

I thought the Jags were "The Steelers of the South" and a hot team coming into the season. Everyone has given up already?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

I had them third in the division and still do. But no, they aren't dead yet. Those O-line issues might end their hopes...

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

How likely is a scenario where Collins doesn't stink, the Titans play well, and Vince doesn't play again this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Possible. But I'd be surprised if Collins could play 15 games. If he's hurt and they need an alternative, they'd have to think about VY. I think even in the worse case scenario for him -- and that would be it -- he'll play again...

Tom (Hackensack)

I need to pair either jacobs or LJ with westbrook this year. both have nice matchups...but im leaning towards jacobs...thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

This early, ALWAYS GO WITH THE HIGHER DRAFT PICK. That's my philosophy, anyway. But I stink....

Travis, SLC

Who are the most underrated and overrated teams in the league after week 1?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Over: Jets Under: Seahawks

Justin (Memphis)

What kind of numbers can Chris Johnson put up this weekand the whole season, and how long before he gets even more of the work and finally pushes White to a lesser role?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I don't think he's ever getting 28 touches a game... Jeff Fisher says he'd go 60-40 (without naming names) and I could see maybe 65-35...

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

Who do you think will have more carries at the end of the year, LenDale or Johnson? Either way, Johnson has more yards, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Yes on more yards. Johnson more touches if he stays healthy. Receptions count too?

Chris (Ames, IA)

Will Roy Williams' coverage skills, or lack thereof, and Dallas' lack of a two receiver be the downfall of the Cowboys this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Perhaps. But all the good teams have at least one issue, don't they?

Aaron (New York)

Do you think Jacksonville will be able protect Garrard against the Bills pass rush?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

I think it will be difficult. I think Stroud in particular could be a terror.

Scott (CT)

How did you become a yankee fan growing up in philly?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

I grew up in Jersey. (And went to school in NYC.) My wife's from Philly.

Joey (Rochester, New York)

What does Vince Young have to do to earn his teammates trust after quitting on them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Show some accountability. Say he's messed stuff up. Take his share of the blame when things go wrong. I think that would be a good start...

Scott (CT)

Any chance of you bringing back your weekly chats with titan fans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Here I am! I'm guessing Titans fans are accouting for more than one quarter of this...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

This is, by the way, a regular weekly time...

Scott (CT)

So you must think John Sterling is a tremendous announcer then

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

ummm. No. It is high, it is far, it is deep. But is it a liner or a huge arc? Is it just clearing the fence or it it clearing the facade?

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

Barring injury, have we seen the last of Chris Henry? Will I be able to remember him for anything other than getting blown up on that kick return?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

If LenDale White and Chris Johnson both play 16 games, it'll really be something.

kelin malcolm Galesburg,IL

The Bear's defense looked as strong as anybodys. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Very strong. One game. I keep hearing Bears and Steelers. What about the Titans D? That was pretty impressive too...

Ereica (Miami)

What are your thoughts on the Steelers and are they legitimate Super Bowl contenders? What do you predict their record to be this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Legit. Should beat up on that division. Eleven wins? NFC East is a tough draw...

Dave (Denver)

Anything on the Vince talk to reporters?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Not yet. Listening to radio and nothing. Checked TVs and no one carrying it from what I saw...

Anthony, Nashville

Should the coaching take some of the accountability for Vince Young's failures? I mean, we never see him on the sidelines looking over defense fax sheets, talking to coordinators & players after each drive.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Yes. We don't know about those conversations though. I don't put too much into that. But they've been enablers to some degree, just as they were with Pacman...

James: ( NC)

What is up with Dallas Clark? Will he play within the next 2 weeks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

I can't pretend to know. They are suggesting he can play this week...

Aaron (New York)

Jacksonville vs. Buffalo. What do you think the score will be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

I am not asked to predict winners in this job. And it's great. Honestly, when you pick a game, you can't help but pull a little for the result so you look smart. And it can hurt your work. So I'm steering away from most predictions...

JTB (Virginia Beach)

Hey Paul, Great job on the ESPN stuff for the division. I take the Simms signing as a master insurance policy on two fronts. He potentially could be a long-term starter if VY busts or goes running for the razors again or he could be insurance for Collins as a backup since Kerry is a FA after this year and could leave or retire. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

JTB! You are the man. Thanks for stopping by. I think you are dead on. As usual...

joe (york)

that rookie return man for the jags look to have some burst...when will his first return for TD be? im saying he does it vs the bills this week...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Good return battle this week: Witherspoon vs. Parrish...

Ken (Nashville)

PK, Is Chris Simms a good fit for the Titans offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

In time he will be yes...

Rick Manchester, NH

Hi Paul, Who will be the better fantasy back in Tennessee this year LenDale or Chris Johnson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

CJ is he stays healthy. LenDale could get more TDs if the Titans are at the goal line a lot...

Keren (Maui)

The big question: Is Vince Young coachable?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Not coachable enough so far, no.

Bongo (Nashvegas)

Hey Paul, Do you like the Titans to win the South or Indy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

If this is really Bongo, unmask and identify yourself. Still hard to go against Indy, but both teams could change my mind in the next couple weeks...

Sammy (Niagara Falls, Canada)

Everybody has ripped the Titans in the offseason for not signing a big FA WR. But who was really available that was worth big money? The only reason McCariens made the most sense was him knowing the offense. Agree?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

I did not rip. I asked for a name. Maybe the name was Desean Jackson or Eddie Royal? But that would mean no CJ...

Mike (Houston)

I don't think you've answered a single Texans question, is this proof of how pathetic they are.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Sorry. Ask another, I will answer. I don't think they are as bad as they looked. I think the schedule is brutal -- 2-3 would be fantastic. Huge game this weekend.

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

Any chance Fisher & Reinfeldt pull the trigger in FA or the draft on a big-time receiver?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Yes. More likely there is a guy they like in FA in 2009 I think, though I don't have the list of potential FAs...

Danny NJ

and there were rumors you were actually Bongo Paul

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I'm insulted...

Danny NJ

Hey Paul, great article on Finnegan. Granted it's only been one game into the season but I was looking forward to seeing Chris Johnson on returns. Chris Carr didn't really do much this week. Any chance Johnson gets his shot sooner then later?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Chris Carr can be good. I would not risk CJ on teams...

JTB (Virginia Beach)

Another Titan question. Special teams were god awful last week vs Jax - both coverage and returns. What are the Titans doing to fix it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

I don't know, but I sure hope it isn't featuring Paul Williams more....

John (Columbus, OH)

I fail to understand how the Jets are overrated while the Seahawks, who lost 34-10, have an injured QB and no legitimate WR's left are underrated? Please tell me your response was a typo?!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I looked for a team that won that is being overblown and a team that lost that is still going to win its division...

alex boise, ID

hey paul, quick fantasy question for you. would you trade santonio holmes for chris johnson straight up??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Probably not. Holmes more proven and that yards per catch in 07 was awesome....

Paul (Wellington, New Zealand)

If you had to pick 3 players from the Jags that you thought played well on Sunday, who would they be and why?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Witherspoon. Brian Williams. Harvey had a heck of an impromptu play...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Here comes a VY update: Didn't realize he needed to tell mom where he was going. Was figuring out hammy on Sunday. Had people coming over so he couldn't get MRI. He's committed to football. Media's fault for what his mom said. According to Teresa Walker on the radio. Sounds like more of the same...

Richard (Knoxville)

I am sure Paul Williams got roasted in meetings this week. He was terrible. Rarely does a special teamer stick out so badly.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Why is he on the roster?

Nick (Cincinnati)

Do you see the Titans making a run at TJ Houshmandzadeh after the season? He's a FA that the Bengals probably wont be able to afford.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Perfect...

Jeff (TN)

Quinton Ganther is now listed as the backup FB. Is this best position, or will some team give him a chance to be their change of pace back when his contract is up.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

They wouldn't use a second FB ever. Hall gets hurt, they load up on TEs....

Chris (Ole' Miss)

Food for thought. Hire Steve McNair as a advisor/2nd Quarterbacks Coach type role for Vince Young?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

He was a good QB. Does that automatically make him a good coach/advisor? What makes you think Mac, who never stayed after the whistle at practice, wants to work a coach's hours?

Caleb, Burlington, Vermont

I NEED RUNNING BACKS ON MY FANTASY TEAM! Would you trade Randy Moss or Braylon Edwards for Marshawn Lynch

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Probably not. But I am OK with WRs carrying my team and I lose all the time...

Richard (Knoxville)

Short list of potential receivers; T.J. Housh, Roy Williams & Lee Evans are all free agents at the end of the season. Lee Evans would add the vertical threat the Titans need.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Any of those guys would be a huge upgrade...

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

Did VY really just not accept any blame for the circus he's causing??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Apparently not...

Steve (Memphis,TN)

Do you see Stephen Tulloch taking over for Ryan Fowler soon?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

No. They like reliable and steady between KB and DT...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

I'm looking for a Texans question, I really am...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Five minute warning...

Paul (Wellington, New Zealand)

What did you think of the deployment of Groves against the Titans last week? Do you see those strategies having more of an impact against the Bills this week or do you see him getting blanked again?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I think it's going to be hard to judge him or his deployment for a month or six weeks...

Nizar (Emerson, NJ)

How good do you think Justin Tuck can be of the New York Giants ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Superb...

Ali: (Richmond)

Do you think matt schaub bounces back this weekend?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I hope so. Because if he's bad in a loss, half of the city will be calling for Sage...

Greg (Indy)

In your opinion WTF was wrong with the Colts. Peyton was throwing passes, it seems that no one could hang on and the defense played horrible.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Missed Saturday and were just out of sync. PM is not superhuman afterall. He needs practice. Yes, I am talking about practice...

Joey (Rochester, New York)

Will Steve Slaton become the main back for the Texans this year instead of a committee and how do you like him Fantasy wise? (There)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I drafted himn and think after the first five weeks he'll be a guy I want to play. But they can't be behind all the time...

Richard (Knoxville)

I think Vince is depressed because Paul Williams and Chris Davis made the team.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

That depressed me!

Jonathan (Louisville, KY)

With a better WR corps and consistent QB, could the Titans make a Super Bowl run?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Yes. But I still think they need to have a year where they advance a bit in the playoffs, Then the next year would be the year. But they'll lose Albert and that will be a setback...

DC (Orlando)

Watching the Jags/Titans game, I was surprised not to see much of Alge Crumpler. Do you think he or Bo Scaife will get more targets this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Scaife is a less is more situation. I would think Crumpler will get more balls overall...

Scott (CT)

Did the Titans try to lure McNair out of retirement? He obviously knows the playbook and I think he could be a huge asset to the team short term and to Young long term in helping him work on his maturity issues. All it would probably take is a 7th rd pick to the Ravens.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

No. He's done. Did you see his last season? Worse than Vince has been. You don't hire a QB to work with another QB, you hire him to play QB...

Alex Gibbs

Did you see the masterful job I did training Duane Brown.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

He gets a little more time than one week...

Matt-Indianapolis

It's obviously very early, but at what point should Colts fans become concerned? It looks like the injuries and rust could lead to a start we haven't seen in a long time, but at least the Colts are on the road to getting healthy, whereas the Pats, Jags, and Chargers have some devastating season ending injuries. I'm thinking even if the Colts go 10-6 this year and go into the playoffs relatively healthy, they may still be an AFC favorite despite not having the usual 12+ wins.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

if they aren't 3-2, I'd be concerned...

Chris (Wilmington)

How can the Texans still have this little talent after 7 drafts where they pick in the top 15? Pathetic.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Back end on defense is especially disappointing...

Richard (Knoxville)

You really think Albert is gone? I don't think he loves the front office, but he does have serious roots in the state.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

If he gets within six weeks of free agency, he'll become the highest paid defensive player in history. Who's going to pay him that, you?

Stephe (ATL)

Vince will be okay when the pride of Houston area High School football and Texas in general this guy had up and downs in college he can throw the ball . Put the ipod on dance and have fun the game will come back. Hook'em

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

You, Ms., are part of the problem...

Mike (Iowa)

Hey Paul, ever notice the Titans put more players on the injury report? Are they dirty or just extremely physical?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

More players of the other teams after they play? Yes they are very physical...

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

OK folks, other weeks I'll stay late some times. But I've got a flight to catch tonight... Thanks for coming. Please click on the blog...

Bradd (Rochester, NY)

You don't think the Titans will pay Albert after the season to keep him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

I don't think they'll be in the area code of what he will command on the open market, no...

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

The only 2 jerseys I've ever purchased are Michael Vick and Vince Young....should I never buy a jersey again?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

Try baseball...

Jim (Fargo, ND)

Why isn't it considered intentional grounding when QB's spike the ball to stop the clock?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

Because by rule you are allowed to spike the ball to stop the clock...

Matt (Milwaukee)

Another quick fantasy ? - start Titans D over Bears D this week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

If AH is playing, I'd go Ten. But don't hate me when it's the wrong call...

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

If he puts up the right numbers, he can't be franchised again....

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

Bye folks, thanks again...
