Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings from Las Vegas, Fight Freaks! We should all be getting ready for a big fight weekend. I'm here for Casamayor-Marquez and there is also Campbell-Guzman tomorrow as well. And make sure to check out today's big notebook and blogs. And one more thing -- check out SportsCenter at 2:30 pm ET / 11:30 am PT for my preview.

Pat (NY)

MARQUEZ MARQUEZ MARQUEZ!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

OK, OK, OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tim (Los Angeles, CA)

How much does the constant change in trainers (3 in 3 fights!!) does it play into who you think will win in the DLH/Pac-Man fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Not much in mu opinion. Oscar is who he is. His trainer needs to do two things: have in in condition and remind him constantly to keep the jab pumping.

WIllie: Homestead, Fl

Hey Dan, let's get the predictions out of the way. who you got this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I like Marquez on a decision, one Casamayor will definitely complain about; Forrest by decision; Bradley by a late stoppage and Guzman via decision.

Jorge(East Los Angeles)

Dan, I'm heading out to Vegas tonight. How's the atmosphere out there? I heard ticket sales aren't going to well, what have you heard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Casino is pretty lively. The crowd won't be huge, but will be passionate. They are saying a crowd of about 8,000 or 9,000.

Charles (Philly)

Attention freak wannabes: DTM posted a FREE blog today, so you can see what you're missing without Insider....

John (philly)

I saw a report that Eddie Chambers is fighting again...Can you Elborate any more details

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

He'll be fighting in Philly Oct. 3 vs. TBA.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

D-Nice?please forgive this longtime, loyal Freak for missing two months of chats. I?ve been tied down with the bar exam which is finally over (of course I?ve read EVERY chat transcript, notebook, blog, etc.). Can you forgive me Dan? It feels so great to be back chatting with my freak family!

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I thought you had died. Welcome back.

Tomas(texas)

Hey Dan, what'll you be watching tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

The Cazadorez girls at the Casamayor-Marquez fight. They are smokin'.

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

Margarito vs. Cotto II in June, if they both win tuneups. Any thoughts on who the opponents might be for each?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

That is by no means a done deal, just something that is one of the scenarios. I have heard that Cotto's comeback opponent could be Sebastian Lujan.

Charles (Philly)

Nice column on Mexican Independence Day fights. Still no US TV coverage for the Arce fight, correct? Were you expecting it to be a bigger card, or did this weekend's fights blow it out of the water?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Arce won't be on US TV. The crowd they're talking about for the fight here is about what I would expect.

Pat (NY)

Did you hear our good friend Mr. Lewis the other night say "you know Bob....Katisdis kinda reminds me of a spartan warrior"

Mark

Dan, enjoyed the WW sighting in your blog this week. Wouldn't you favor him in a fight with King Arthur, despite the layoff? I almost don't want to see it because I'd be worried it would completely kill the already slim chance for Pavlik-Abraham fight to determine supremacy at 160.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I don't know if I would favor Winky, but I think it is a competitive fight. I am actually interested in seeing it as long as there is no Pavlik-Abraham in early 2009.

Brendon Smith (Australia)

Mate, I read your blog. Are you crazy? Chavez clearly beat Whitaker.

Paul B (NY, NY)

If Cotto's opponent is Lujan, there should be a "no hitting in the ears" rule.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I ear ya.

Tomas(Texas)

Kirkland is a beast. He really needs to polish up on his defense or I fear someone with a punch will put him on his butt for good

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I could not agree more.

Sal (Chicago)

Do you think the spotlight of a PPV and the Mexican Independence Day weekend, changes how Mora fights? I can see him being a lot more aggressive

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

No, Mora is who he is -- a really good boxer.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

I was interested in seeing Baby Face Garcia fight Yory-boy but isn't him but Danny Perez is a better replacement than we usually see on such short notice. You think Baby Face is in for a tough night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I think he could be a little tougher than Campas because he's fresher. But he is also smaller and has had only one fight in more than three years. But I spoke with Danny yesterday and he seems in great shape and really focused. He knows he's the "opponent" and is anxious to pull the upset and get back into the picture.

Mike, Cleveland

D$, just read the blog and can't believe Whitaker-Chavez was 15 years ago. I feel old.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Me too.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

Who's announcing the Casamayor-Marquez PPV card tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Barry Toppkins and Ron Borges.

JKGaucho (DC)

With the Margarito fight off, what are the plans for Clottey?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

TBA.

mitchel-houston

DTM, there is a hurricane heading into my house and I'm still here chatting with you. Does this get me a freak status for the week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

No, it makes you stupid. Get out!

Raymond (Baltimore)

Adrian DANtley, me and a friend were having a argument. He's a big DLH fan, while I don't like him, but surely respect him. Now he is the greatest boxer financially. But is he truly an All time great boxer , like Ali, Louis, Leonard and others. Or is it more that he was a very good boxer that always willing to fight every great fighter of his generation.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Probably more the second. I don't know anyone who puts Oscar in the league of a Louis or SRL, but Oscar is one of the best of his era and he has single handidly driven the business of boxing at the highest level. Don't hate because of that.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

I have faith in you Dan. Even if YOU had malaria, you wouldn't miss a chat.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Joseph Agbeko is no DTM.

Josh (Nashville, Tennessee)

Dano, after seeing the latest Samuel Peter training clips and pics of Vitali Klitschko in camp things are not looking good for Peter. He looks way out of shape for a fight that is in 4 weeks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Agreed. A Klitschko win would not surprise me one iota.

JP (Columbus, OH)

The diverse range of opinions I've heard on DLH-PacMan is amazing. I've heard everything from "PacMan is putting his career in danger" to "Oscar doesn't stand a chance". Has your experience been similar, DTM?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Yes, which is why it is a compelling fight.

Joel Julio

Speaking of "getting out", any chance I get to leave my room this week dad?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. You are free to go out, but be home by 10.

JD, Saratoga NY

Ladies and gentelman, I knew DTM, and You Joseph, Agbenko are no DTM.

Rick (L.A.)

Hey Dan, read your blog about Whitaker v. Chevez. Don't you think they awarded Chavez for never backing down and penalized Whitaker for running too much? Or where they simply trying to hand Chavez a belt in his fourth division?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Door 2. Chavez got outclassed.

Frank (PHX)

Dan, HBO won't be airing a re-run next week of the Marquez/Casamayor fight so we all have to order the PPV this weekend if we want to see it right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Correct.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

D$, have you watched a fight card on gofightlive.tv yet? If so, I'm curious on if the video quality is any good.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I have. The quality is a little spotty, but it has been getting better.

Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)

No Margarito fight before the end of the year? Is this true?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Yes, it is true.

Mike (Newark, Delaware)

Hey Dan - Nice Blog on your chat with the Winkster. Question for you. Do you think he would be better served to come back against a tune up opponent? Arthur Abrham is no slouch and if they fought in January, Winky will have been out the ring for 17 months. Not to mention that Winky has to lose close to 40 pounds by January....

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

When you are a Winky Wright and want to get paid and are near the end of your career, you don't take tune-ups. Period. You take the biggest fight you can get.

bruce torrance,ca

who do you favor in the mijares vs darchinyan fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I love the fight but think Mijares is too skilled for him. I think he'll outbox Vic.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Dan I gotta throw out MAJOR thanks/props/freak giddyness to Showtime for picking up Mijares-Vic. I can't wait for that and am discouraged that HBO simply ignored this fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Let me clarify something: HBO was not interested in the fight for this year. It was, however, interested in doing it in January, but the promoters wanted to do it now and went with Showtime, which makes sense.

jeff (las vegas)

dtm are they selling the fight poster at the mgm and what time is the weigh-in?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

There are no posters for sale, bt ut they have been giving out the Tecate and Cazadores sponor posters for the fight for free. I think the weigh in is at 2:30ish PT.

JD, Saratoga NY

Sweet pea v. Sugar Ray Leonard at 147, who you got?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

SRL.

Matt H (Phx, az)

He-Dan and the Masters of the Universe: I noticed you said "Casamayor...will most likely complain about it..." I remember watching him after the Katsidis fight, he seemed to complain alot about every decision he lost and every fight he won said,"...was never hurt or staggered...". I think he is a sore-loser and not really a gracious winner. What say you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I agree.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

I see that on 11/1, Chavez, Jr. is now fighting the ever dangerous TBA. What happened to the Vanda rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

It is listed as TBA because Vanda is not a done deal yet.

Jose Armando Santa Cruz (limbo)

Casamayor complaining about decisions? Please.

mitchel-houston

Dan I was sitting ringside last week. Awesome night! Have you heard how many stitches Barrios took? He left half his blood in the Toyota Center!

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I dont know how many, but the cut severed a vein, so it was pretty bad.

Notebook

Will I be making an appearance today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Of course.

Pat (NY)

I was watching the Raul Marquez/Lorenzo fight the other day. Marquez seems like a real cool dude. I'm glad for him that he's getting his shot at a world title. I just dont see him being able to hang with Abraham. Too young, too fast, too powerfull...Just too good. How do you see that fight playing out?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Raul is a terrific guy, a real pro, one of the coolest guys you could meet in boxing. And a real warrior inside the ring. He will give it everything he has but I just do not think it will be enough to beat Abraham.

Sal (Chicago)

As much as i loved him... wasn't Chavez the exact same way as Casamayor? He never gave his opponents credit and always had a reason if he didnt the KO

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Chavez was the biggest sore loser ever, including Ruiz and Casamayor.

Jack (NY)

What do you think of the massachusetts boxing commissioner saying that DLH - Pacman shouldn't happen and he's going to write a letter to ABC to try to stop it? He won't be taken seriously will he?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I hadn't heard that but if it is true, wonderful. He's probably jealous because his poathetic boxing state isn't hosting the fight.

Jimmy (Arlington, Va)

What do you predict the biggest match up will be next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Whomever Oscar fights.

Joe (NYC)

So HBO didn't want Mijares-Darchinyan for this year. Does that mean that they won't be adding ANY fights for the rest of '08?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

The schedule is filled for the rest of the year.

Tomas(Texas)

No one's talking about Amir Khan. Damn what a KO that was and probably upset of the year. Kinda feel bad for the guy

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

We're not talking about it because we beat that dead horse last week.

Mike(San Diego, CA)

Dan, Lot of rumors that Paul Williams\Verno Phillips is close to being finalized. Any truth, what have you heard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I heard what I reported -- they're talking.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Dan, I gotta mention this because I promised I would?a couple months back I got to meet Steve Farhood at Planet Hollywood. I told him I was a Dan Rafael fight Freak, and told me that he reads your chats "every single week" and that you two are close friends. He also told me to tell you that he is "the nicest guy in the whole world" which really did seem to be true ? he's a great guy and was very willing to talk with me and take a picture.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

All true. Farhood is a great guy even though he doesn't remember the first time we met when I was a civilian and I met him many years ago at the boxing HOF. But he made up for it by having me over to his house for PPV one time when I was in NYC.

Zowild (AZ)

Peace DR. Just wanted peeps to know that Tecate has a promo going on (only in the following states though; Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico). Buy a 12 of Tecate and order the fight, send in for a $20 rebate.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Exactly. That is a great deal. Tecate has been a great supporter of boxing, so if you're going to drink, drink Tecate. That is a way to show companies your appreciation for their support of our sport.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

(But don't drink too much).

Marc (Blue Horizon)

Steve "USS" Cunningham and Eddie Chambers will be part of tonights broadcast team on gofightlive.tv

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Free plug, even if nobody cares. Go back to your jail cell.

Brasky, VA

What do you make of the whole WBC/Mississpippi issue?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

The WBC is a disgrace. A joke. They make me sick.

corey(from westwick)

This weekend has split decision all over it

Frank (PHX)

Dan, I saw DLH on ESPN talking about the fight and he mentioned how he would love to fight Floyd again. Even throwing in a lil jab by saying "I hear he needs the money." I can definately see them fighting again next May. Is that even more evident that DLH is not retiring and will definately be fighting Floyd or another big opponent after Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Oscar is not retiring after Dec. 6 and Mayweather obviously will be back at some point. Do the math.

Justin (DC)

Why is the Campos fight televised, but Victor Ortiz is not?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

A) It's Campas. B) Campas is off the card, but the Garcia-Perez fight is still on TV. C) Ortiz is also on TV. D) Get a clue. The box with the TV lineup has only run with every story on the card all week.

Carlos (Funky Town, TX)

Dan, what future fights do you see the Baby Bull in. He is the closest thing to Pacquiao as far as exicitement. He has never been in a boring fight that I can recall.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I could see him fighting the winner of Casa-JMM, maybe Campbell in a rematch at some point. The lightweight division is loaded. He won't have problems finding opponents.

Angel, Carson City

I am excited about the Luis Perez v. Ricardo Cordoba fight in Panama next week - too bad its not on US TV. Hopefully it will show up on the internet.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Clearly you are a Freak!!

James, UK

Who is your pick for the Manfredo-Bika fight. Im sure most people are picking Bika, but dont you agree that Manfredo's boxing skills will give Bika a hard night. Im picking Manfredo by UD.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Bika.

Tomas(Texas)

What do you think of MAB fighting in China?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I don't.

Frank (PHX)

Paulie Malignaggi was quoted as saying "I don't have a lot of fights left in me" and that his next broken hand could be last. I'm betting he'll break his hand again when he hits Hatton's rock solid head.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

It's a cefinite possibility.

Ryan (Santa Monica, CA)

Dan - I'm so hungover and am not pleased with being at work right now. I need a Quiznos sub in the worst way and then I'm going to watch Corrales v. Castillo on youtube all day. I pick Cassa this weekend by the way, freaks should all bet the opposite way (I know you don't condone betting but I'm a degenerate). Peace.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Ummmm, OK.

Ant (UK)

Whats the deal with Bredis Prescott from now on? I heard Frank Warren will sign him. Does that mean he will ply his trade in Europe for a while? That dude is mean.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I'm sure when Frank made the fight, he had all kinds of options on him.

corey(from westwick)

I already have Casamayor in the hall of fame and my pound for pound list but a win over Marquez confirms it

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I have been on the border about Casamayor as a HOFer, although I lean to yes. A win tomorrow makes him automatic to me.

Dave, NJ

Dan how awesome is that boxing ring that they put in the lobby of the MGM Grand with the lion in the middle of it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

It's pretty cool. They do that for most of the big fights. Really sets the mood when you walk in the door. Mandalay Bay dvoes stuff like that too and usually has big glass cases with videos running and the guys' title belts and robes and stuff. It's pretty cool.

Tom (Beaver Falls PA)

Play along for a second Dan - Manny beats Oscar this December, then beats Ricky Hatton next April ... by fall of 2009, doesn't F**** M********* have to come out of "retirement" to fight Manny for P4P supremacy (say at 140 lbs)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

I could see it, but not at 140.

Lamb (upstate ny)

Danimal, who would you favor in a potential Froch Vs. Kessler fight? I think its Kessler somewhat easily to be honest.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Kessler would shmear him.

Aziz (Uk)

im a big fan of mosley and margarito. do you think they could face each other sometime?? cheers dan!@@ and im backing jones

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I love that fight, but as long as there is a huge rematch with Cotto looming, I don't see it happening. But if Margarito were to beat Cotto again, I could see it happening after that, meaning late next year.

BT (LA, CA)

rumors of haye vs. kevin johnson...what's your take on johnson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

It's not a rumor. It was my story in a blog from the other day. Go read it.

Raymond (Baltimore)

DTM, so on that note, who have been some of the most gracious/respectful losers off the top of your head?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

One guy who was very respectful and gracious in defeat, which shocked me, was when Hamed lost to Barrera. I was at the fight and the press conference and he was stunningly gracious.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

One guy who was very respectful and gracious in defeat, which shocked me, was when Hamed lost to Barrera. I was at the fight and the press conference and he was stunningly gracious.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

And Tyson was the same way after Lennox absolutely and definitely kicked his ass.

DC Boxing Commission

Oscar needs to come here to fight. If he is losing and Pacquiao suffers a cut, we'll award him a clear KO victory...

Glen Hamada (Washington)

Chavez owned Sweet Pea. You're lost, Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Doug Tucker, is that you?

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

DTM...Hope this question isn't stupid but it really has me thinking...is the Viper a HOFer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Not even close.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

How about the WBClowns? Leave it to them to cause a mess of Bradley vs. Cherry.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Why people continue to give those *&%^%%$ any credibility makes me sad.

Chris (LA)

Dan, you mentioned Winky was at 196 last time you spoke to him. If the Abraham fight happens at 160, how tough will it be for Winky to drop 36 pounds in 4 months and will it affect him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

He was not 196 WHEN I spoke to him. He said he had gotten up that high, but had already started to lose some.

David (houston)

you dont think the "cherry bomb" has any chance at beating bradley? that fight strikes me as very interesting if cherry brings his a-game

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I like Cherry. Good dude, entertaining fighter. But it's a different class and he's a smaller guy coming up in weight. He's also slower.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, anything CONFIRMED for Glen Johnson fighting soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Yes. Here's a little notebook tidbit, he'll be back in action Nov. 11 in Hollywood, Fla., on a card along with Edison Miranda's comeback. Opponents TBA. It will be a special edition of Lou DiBella's Broadway Boxing series as he teams up with Warriors Boxing. James McGirt Jr. will also be on the card.

Mario (Houston,TX)

DTM Any word on Edwin Valero's next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Nope.

Don (Buffalo)

Has Shaun George / Glen Johnson been finalized?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

No.

Larry (Houston, TX)

Dan have you heard anything about DLH/Pac ticket prices? I heard the cheapest may be $800.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Another notebook tidbit: Tix will go on sale Sept. 24 and be priced from $150 to $1,500. I love how people "hear" things they have no clue about.

Tim (St Paul, MN)

dan, Vanda and I are sitting here right now reading your chat. He wanted me to tell you he signed his contract on Wednesday!

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Congrats. Now get to the gym and tell him to finish the job this time.

SL (NY)

when deciding whom to vote for HALL OF FAME, do you consider AMATEUR pedigree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I do take that into account, like if a guy won a gold medal or something.

nathen, san diego, ca

where do we sit re changing the current scammy 'alphabelt' soup situation to one 'ring mag', or other governing body, champion in each weight class? what's taking so long to make seemingly little progress toward updating the boxing world while other sports discuss and implement rule changes yearly?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Mainly because the TV networks refuse to lift a finger. The promoters like it how it is because they have a lot of titles for their guys to fight for. The fighters have multiple options and don't say a word. And most of the media are a bunch of hypocrites who won't take a stand.

Joe (New York, NY)

Dan it seems boxing is getting more and more coverage from ESPN. They even mentioned JMM/Casa on First Take today.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

And I will be on SportsCenter at 2:30 ET to talk about the fight as well.

Mario (Houston,TX)

Dan, After stopping Barrios, do you think Rocky Juarez is in line for another title shot? And how do you think he would do with the current champs?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I think Rocky did himself a lot of good. I think he'll be back on HBO or a big PPV card. At 130, there is no obvious title bout for him, so it remains to be seen if he will get a title shot.

Mike (Ohio)

Dan, whats the latest with Valero. I'd like to see him in the 135 pound mix. Any word on who/when his next fight is.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I have no idea, but he is licensed in Texas, where Juan Diaz just drew a crowd of about 14,000. I'd love to see those guys throw down.

Steve, San Jose CA

Last week Sportscenter actually showed highlights from the Diaz and Rocky fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I know.

Anson, Wales

Hi Dan, What did you make of Arthur-Cook? I thought Arthur looked flat on the night. Cook is decent but if Arthur fights him again i think he can get his title back. Do you agree?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I agree that Arthur looked a little off his game. I think he's a better fighter than Cook, but Cook did deserve the win. I think we could see a rematch and I think it would be an even better fight than the first, which was pretty good.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, is there anyone left in the 130lb class?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Jorge Linares is moving up to it!

Ryan, Palatine IL

What up DTM? I am not sure which is better, following the chat live or going back on Monday and see how your predictions panned out. Last week you went 4 for 4 of the fights that were discussed in last weeks chat. And not only on who won, but how the fights actually played out. Even the Seldon / Johnson fight. F'n amazing!! You have any NFL picks? Besides the Giants smashing the Rams?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I have been on a decent run of late.

Joe (New York, NY)

How about Juarez/Sotto II?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Would love it! Good idea.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Dan, I'm sure you've noticed that several other prominent boxing writers who were initially sour on DLH-Pac have not only come around to appreciating the fight, but have also given Merchant - and YOU - due credit for conceiving the idea in the first place. Have you noticed this?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I have noticed the props to Larry, but nothing about me. Anyway, all I did was write what Larry said.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

D-Nice, you comin out to Vegas for Dawson-Tarver or might that be a RAD night?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I will be in Vegas for the fight, so no RAD that night.

Steve (NYC)

Assuming Hatton wins any chance of him fighting the hometown guy at Boardwalk Hall in Mike Aronautis? That would be just an insane atmosphere.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Unlikely.

corey(from westwick)

Any word on the the Peterson boys next bouts

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Nothing set but Lamont may be on the Nov. 1 Top Rank PPV card headlined by Chavez Jr.

Steve, San Jose, CA

I haven't heard about The Ghost recently. Is he taking time off because of his wife's illness?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

He's embroiled in arbitration with promoter Dan Goossen and that has stalled his career big time. .It's a shame.

Rick, Marina, Ca

Will you be at the Mosely-Mayorga fight in LA ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

No, I am not making that trip. I will be home that weekend watching on TV and also hanging out it with my wife on her birthday weekend (for a change, since I think I have been at fights on her birthday for about the past six years or so).

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

NOTEBOOK IS UP!

Kyle (Indianapolis)

Is Meldrick Taylor a HOFer in your book? He had a great amateur career, and his pro career was outstanding until the Chavez fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Not a HOFer.

Tony (Miami)

Is Oscar going to hire Nacho?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

He is very likely but one of a few guys Oscar mentioned to me. I will be writing a story on it later.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

First class to Vegas Dan? It's been miserably hot here for like 3 months now -- I know you hate that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

YES! Upgrades round trip baby!

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, Any word on Vasquez/Arce fighting before the end of the year? Don't know about you Dan, but I think Vasquez would destroy Arce.

Doug Tucker

How can mijares even be a possible FOY candidate if he clearly lost all rounds against Jose Navarro? What is this? Amateur hour?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I don't think that is going to happen. My sources tell me Vazquez-Marquez 4 is being talked about for February.

Mike Pa

Is Wlad Klitschko going to fight again this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Yes, likely Dec. 13 in a mandatory with Povetkin.

Curious NY

Is it true David Haye turned down Sabu as a potential opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

I think so. I don't think Haye wanted to fight in a ring made of barbed wire.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

The Montiel-Z Gorres rematch is real interesting. I assume that card would be available as a Top Rank ppv?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

If it happens, it would likely be on that Dec. 13 PPV card Top Rank is discussing.

Lamb (Upstate NY)

Dan, any word on a possible Sturm v. Sylvester fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

There is supposed to be a purse bid coming up,

Chito (Phoenix)

Where does the winner of forrest/mora go frome here? How about pual williams if hes survives his next bout?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I think if Mora wins and Shane beats Mayorga, we could see Mora-Mosley early next year in LA. They had been talking about a fight for this fall before Mora was forced into the rematch with Forrest.

g(atl)

hey Dan, are either Vazquez jr or Matthysee worth checking out tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I've been hearing about Matthyse (not Walter), so I am interested in seeing him. Vazquez is in his first 12-round fight so it could be interesting.

Nick (NYC)

if Calzaghe goes on to convincingly beat Jones and then retire - is it safe to assume the following: 1. 1st ballot HOF 2. top super middleweight of all time

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

He already is a first ballot HOFer and he already is the best 168 ever.

Rags

Am I alone in thinking that Kendall Holt v. Zab Judah @ 140 would be fun while it lasted?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I think it would be also.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

That said, I think Zab would stop Holt.

Kevin

Where do you think Valuev (and his team) go next? Wait for Wladimir, or take an "optional" before Chagaev in June '09?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Probably an optional. Valuev has always been an active fighter. They'll find some shmear and make the fight.

Tomas(Texas)

Wouldnt mind seeing Zab vs Hatton

Armando (Nj)

Dan - buy/sell - Erik Morales comes back and becomes a player in the division again (only 32 years old)

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Sell. He's totally shot.

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I think we may be headed for a banishment-free chat. The Freaks have been on excellent behavior today.

Kevin

Does Kali Meehan qualify as that "shmear"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Possibly.

Jason (Seattle)

I was bummed to read Nate's comments about having sanctioning bodies' belts vs. the Ring belt. OTOH, he'd have probably said the opposite if he was the Ring Champ and Joel had three trinkets.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I have had that debate with Nate. He believes what he believes even if he is part of the problem for believing it.

James(canadA)

Is schmear the new P.C term for "bum"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I don't think shmear is very PC but I guess it is better than what I was going to say, which was turd.

Jesse (Long island)

Dan: please explain why Sergio Mora is not on your P4P list? Why don't you like him? He's a champion and he won the Contender. Doesnt that count for anything?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Thank goodness. You're banned.

Kyle (Indianapolis)

I must have missed your prediction for Campbell/Guzman, could you give that again? Personally, I think Guzman will win a tight possibly split decision, should be a very decent match.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Guzman via points.

Tony(Tampa)

Whats up Dan, Ran into Edner Cherry along with his wife and child at a local Tampa mall several months back and he was very gracious and reserved. His very young daughter is wheelchair bound and even though I think Bradley will win their matchup I'm pulling for Cherry because he is the very definition of a blue collar fighter and I wish him all the financial success in his career to help support his family.

Edward (SD)

Is Roy Jones the best rapper alive?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Banishment, your lunch is served.

David (Nashville)

Dan, I'm sure you're sick of us asking about this, but is Lou still bringing Taylor-Lacy to Vanderbilt's Memorial Gym in Nashville TN?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes.

Habs (Phoenix, AZ)

King Freak: I just saw photos of Solis. He keeps getting heavier and heavier? He needs to stop fire James Toney's nutrionist. Is he a legit prospect if he gets in shape?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I think he is just an OK prospect. I have said all along he is not tall enough and does not punch well enough to be a serious contender.

Banishment

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

OK, Freaks thanks for a great chat. Gotta cut it off a little early today so I can get down to the arena for the TV stuff. So check it out at 2:30 ET and make sure to read your notebook and blog. And don't forget to enjoy a great weekend of fights. Talk to you next week. Peace.
