Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

Sorry for the delay, gang... we'll stay after class to atone for our tardiness. Let's get going, shall we?

Chris (Cleveland)

AJ, I'm saddled with Larry Johnson and I'm wondering if you see any light at the end of the tunnel for this guy. If I do trade him, what sort of value should I expect to receive for him.

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

I'm not sure it's an LJ problem as much as it's a "we're on our third QB already and the defense lets the opposition run up and down the field on us so we're forced to pass" problem. I think LJ has value, but you're not going to get it in return.

Jake, Raleigh, NC

Just wanted to ask if Steve Smith is worth a shot this week over Bryant Johnson from SF?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

Steve Smith CAR? Absolutely. There's rust, but he'll get plenty of targets. If you drafted him, you must start him.

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

By the way, as you've guessed, football Q's are more than welcome.

Jon (Boston)

What should be done about MJD? Will he continue to struggle? I have been offered Forte for him do I take it?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

I think MJD will be better. Remember, Jacksonville unexpectedly lost four O-linemen in the first two weeks. The run game will eventually recover. I'm not sure Forte can keep this pace up if Orton continues to be unable to throw more than five yards downfield.

Mike (Indy)

How many people lost their week last night because of Jackson's stupid ego filled bungle?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

A good friend of mine called me after it happened b/c he had Westbrook against McNabb/Jackson in a 6-pts all TD league. That 18 point swing certainly helped him. I'm sure many others as well.

What happened to TO in the second half last night? I would've won with a few more yards!!!

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

TO hates your team. Didn't you get the memo?

Andrew, VA

I am in need of a better quarterback. Who do you think is worth trading for right now, Phillip Rivers or Aaron Rodgers? To get Rivers I have to give up Braylon Edwards, and to get Rodgers I lose Lee Evans and Kevin Smith?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

Not only do I want Rodgers over Rivers, but I'd also rather give up Evans and Smith.

Brian (Philly)

When is ESPN going to get the averages right for fantasy football players. Brandon Marshall scored 43 points in Week 2, but didn't play in Week 1. But ESPN says his avg. is 21.5. Those things hurt in trade bargaining.

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

That's on you to explain... it's Marshall's own fault he didn't play in Week 1 anyway. If you can;t swing a deal based on that number, you're not a very good negotiator.

Matt (KY)

I have Warner, Rogers and Cutler. Which of these should i trade and what should i ask in return? (8 team league).

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Who's going to need a QB in an 8-team league, I wonder? That said, I'd trade Warner, since he has the best chance of injury, given his age and track record. Ask for the world. See what the counter is.

Freddie (LA)

Seriously, is LT still the best RB in football right now? AP is healthy and running, Westbrook is playing well, and LT is slow out of the gate.

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

It's always when healthy, which LDT is clearly not. So, no, he's not.

Shelli, Louisville Kentucky

WARREN SAPP??? Do you think he can win dancing? Also, Barber/Bush/Turner... Is Turner my automatic bench warmer?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Not this week -- KC is a sieve. I'd sit Barber actually on a short week of rest.

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

And as for dancing, I'll pick whoever is partnered with Lacey.

Start 2RB for this week: MJD, Fast Willie, Chris Johnson, Gore

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

Gore and Johnson.

John (Davenport, IA)

If I'm looking to trade LT, what sort of value can I expect to get? Can I fairly ask for Aaron Rodgers and Reggie Bush?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

You can certainly ask, but LDT is at a very low point in value. I doubt you'll get that in return.

Marc (Toronto, Canada)

Tony Scheffler. A sell high or a sign of things to come?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

Sign of things to come... Cutler's breakthrough season carries the whole offense with him.

Steve (Ohio)

Is it worth holding on to guys like Hardy and Charles in a dynasty league, or should I drop one of them for someone I might use as a backup/matchups play (like a Matt Jones, Bruce, Carlson, or Bills DST)?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

That's a question for you to answer... since you said "might' use rather than "will need to" use, I'd stick with stashing a rookie.

Lara (AZ)

What are your thoughts on Brandon Webb this week? I'm worried about him killing me in ERA and WHIP.

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

It's risk/reward... if all you're looking for is a win, then I'd not risk it. Sounds like you're close in ERA/WHIP, so why not stand pat and let others fall behind you.

Paul (Atlanta, GA)

Scoring question from this weekend, AJ. Why did SEA not get credit for a defensive touchdown? Was it just because the player who recovered the fumble turned around and fumbled himself only to have a teammate recover for the score? Isn't that still the DEF scoring the TD? Also, would you drop Bulger for JT O'Sullivan (not many options on the waiver wire and Bulger is frustrating me)?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

Second part first... I would cut Bulger for JTO. That Rams team is simply awful and except for SJax, I want no part of it. First part second... didn't see the play in question, but when the defense recovers a fumble they BECOME the offense and the offense BECOMES the defense... so when there is a second fumble, technically his teammate who recovers is on the OFFENSE.

Robert (Eugene, Or)

What is fair value to offer for P. Manning? Is Santonio Holmes and D. Garrard too much? That would leave me with Marshall and Cotchery as starting WRs

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Again - don't worry about fair value when making trade offers... make an offer you feel comfortable with. Only the other owner can tell you if its "Fair". I think Manning is at a buy low point, and you might get taken up on that deal. You'd still be able to pick up a WR off waivers to complete your roster, so it's worth it.

Mike Holmgren (Seattle)

Am I supposed to accept that answer AJ! I can't even catch a break in fantasy!! Oww...I just tore my ACL.

nate ohio

Is Lastings Milledge a keeper in a 14 team deep bench league? We keep 10 players.

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

I've got a soft spot for Milledge... but to evaluate baseball keepers now, before free agency and off-season deals rear their heads is a fool's errand.

BILLS BILLS BILLS!!.....Is this defense for real or a fluke? Division Contenders?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

Will they beat Miami twice? Probably. Will they be able to beat the Jets twice? Good chance. Can they split with the Pats? I wouldn't be shocked. So contenders... absolutely.

Rob (NYC)

Is it too soon to start looking at potential playoff matchups when evaluating trade offers? Romo plays at Pit in the first week of our playoffs and home vs. NYG in the championship round. Warner gets the Rams in the first round if he stays healthy. Does make have any bearing on your decision making this early in the season?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

No chance -- it's hard enough predicting if Terrell Owens will be healthy in Week 3, let alone in Week 14. Between now and then a defense could lose half its starters to ACL's and whatnot. I get the best players... the matchups for the studs don't often matter.

Brett (Chicago)

Better Keeper next year: Russell Martin, Francisco Liriano, or Jon Lester. Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

Liriano if I had to pick right now.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Braylon Edwards - panic or wait this crap out?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

A little of both... I think this offense continues to struggle (are the Brady chants starting already?) but at the same time, the odds of you getting equal value for Edwards are slim. Shop around, but only sell on your terms.

Jimmy (Long Island)

AJ! I Sat Matt Cain this week, even with his 2 starts. I'm bunched with 4 other teams in WHIP. Smart move?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

It is if he gets tattooed. But actually, with 2 starts, that's twice as many innings you're at risk. Even with an ace, at this point, we're playing a game of trying to minimize risk in the ratio categories...

Boomer (Baltimore)

Did I miss the memo? Fast Willie projected for 4 points, gotta love the ESPN projections, did they not watch the Cowboys put up 40+ points?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Last time I checked, the Steelers' passing game didn't look anything like the Cowboys. And incidentally, the Eagles are the league's best rush defense. But hey, Boomer... make a prediction yourself, why don't you.

ADP, I need a new QB Minny

Any truth to the Ferotte rumors? How long can they stay with Tavris???

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

As far as I know, the rumors of a QB change are just that - rumors. But at some point, Tarvaris has to step up. The patience is wearing thin.

Boomer (Baltimore)

17 Carries 85 yards and touch

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Duly noted... we'll check back next week and see. Now, Boomer, do you want to also predict the other 350 players, or is it just the one prediction you have n issue with?

Wes (Philadelphia)

Tony Scheffler pick up worth a #1 waiver wire spot?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

I don't think any TE is worth a #1 waiver wire pick. I'd save it for a QB/RB injury.

Dan (GA)

Now that Galloway is out for this week and maybe more, should I drop him and pick up Justing Gage?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

Justin Gage is definitely a viable candidate with the news that he actually has a QB throwing him the ball.

Nick (NY)

Should I drop Hightower or B. Jackson for Sproles? I have LT & Edge also on my team.

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

I actually envision Hightower's role getting greater as the season goes on, but Jackson is expendable.

Bruce (New York)

Am I panicking by offering Chad Johnson + MJD for a top WR like Wayne or TO?

AJ Mass
  (12:03 PM)

A little bit, Bruce... little bit.

Calm (down)

Dont take it so personal AJ. You get paid to rank 350 players, dont act like your above someone that has an issue. geez.

AJ Mass
  (12:07 PM)

I'm not taking it personally at all. Tongue was firmly planted in cheek, there. However, I do always find it amusing when someone selects one projection out the whole bunch and finds it to be completely preposterous, and how on earth could anyone in the world have that opinion. Sometimes we're right, and sometimes we're wrong. The outrage is what gets me.

Boomer (Baltimore)

I don't mean any harm for the most part you guys do an amazing job just sometimes a few come across a little funny to me. I am smart enough to make my own decisions though.

AJ Mass
  (12:09 PM)

Not a problem Boomer -- debate is fine. There's always a few that folks scream bloody murder on (like Michael Turner as #3 RB in Week 1) yet rarely a followup "Hey, you guys were right and we were wrong..." after the fact.

Dave (Tampa)

Once upon a time, before the proliferation of the fantasy websites, and even before every house was wired, there was fantasy football. We actually had to decide who had the best matchups ourselves. Life was good.

AJ Mass
  (12:10 PM)

And you still do... because I'm not going to agree with Karabell or TMR or Chris Harris or you on everything either. Still always your call on pulling the trigger.

Joe (NY)

Do you see James Jones becoming regularly involved in GB offense? I'm between him and Toomer for waiver pick up. Who you taking in a PPR?

AJ Mass
  (12:11 PM)

I'm taking Toomer. Eli loves to go to him in the crunch, whereas Jones is probably option 4 for Rodgers.

AJ Mass
  (12:11 PM)

OK, gang... gotta run. Thanks for the Q's - TMR should be up at 3pm.
